& carry on british expats feel brexit effect hua hin, THAILAND We weren’t going to make any more serious reference to the tumultuous Brexit vote that took place in the UK last week, but a combination of reader communication and a lack of local news has left us with little choice this week. You will also find a little EU Referendum humour on our Jokes page this week, on page 10. However we are going to try and give a slightly different spin on events to how the world media has been covering it, and try to make a comparison to the position Thailand has found itself in previously. Some of the noises coming out of the defeated Remain camp, from both politicians and the public, almost echo some of what was said in Thailand by those supporting the so-called ‘Yellow Shirts’, who maintained that many of the opposing side were not intellectually equipped to be able to cast their vote properly, when faced by yet another ‘Red Shirt’ win. The Remain camp haven’t gone quite that far, but some have inferred that people voting Leave are either racists or doddery old people, and were conned by the campaign, going as far as to call for a second referendum. Obviously in Thailand the animosity between the two sides spilled over into ugly scenes of airport takeovers, main intersection closures and violence, as well as accusations of vote buying and polling irregularities, and eventually heralded the army takeover and current political situation. It doesn’t seem likely that we will see such scenes in the UK, but either way, democracy becomes the loser when such votes are challenged, even with harsh and insulting words. Hopefully as time goes on, it can heal the rifts, and each side can acknowledge that it is neither a doomsday nor a paradise scenario, and that both were right and wrong. For anyone who is being directly and negatively affected by the current financial markets instability, we hope and trust that it is both short term and reversible over time.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 It slices, it dices—it makes perfect shoestring fries each and every time! It’s Susan, the woman you married 15 years ago and now treat more like a kitchen appliance than your very wife! Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 They say that home is where the heart is, but little do they know about the metal box, the bloody towels, and the crosscut saw beneath the floorboards. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 An attractive member of the opposite sex will misconstrue your coy flirtations this week, leaving you unfulfilled and embarrassed, but with a very full sugar bowl. aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 The stars don’t understand how you can sleep at night after everything that you’ve done, though they’re mostly just referring to all the napping.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Remember: Some people were put on this earth to achieve great things. Other people, like you, are just here to help with exposition and backstory. Gemini May 22 – June 21 Much to your horror, the other shoe will finally drop this week, along with the other sock, half-a-dozen metal screws, and the other prosthetic leg. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 You’d do just about anything to be able to see your father again, which is too bad, as he’s healthy, happy, and living at an assisted living center in Coral Springs. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 The earth and moon continue their age-old cosmic dance this week, bumping into nearby star systems, and bringing untold death and destruction to millions of lives.

Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 You’ll laugh all the way to the bank this week, before seeing your account statement, monthly service charges, looming overdraft fees, and crying all the way back home. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 The stars indicate that you’re way ahead of your time. Specifically, the year 2436, when covering oneself in bird dung and screaming angrily at the Sun will be commonplace. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 The ebb and flow of the ocean tide will greatly influence your future this week, pushing you further and further away from all those rescue ships.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. The same loose associations were no doubt at work This week it is..... Guinea-pig A person or animal who is used as the subject of an when the animal was called the Spanish Coney in a 1710 edition of The British Apollo: Containing Two Thousand experiment. It isn’t at all clear why these cute family pets came to Answers to Curious Questions in Arts and Sciences: “A be given their name. They are cavies, not pigs, and they Guinea Pig... in Johnston’s Natural History goes by the don’t originate from Guinea. Both ‘guinea’ and ‘pig’ seem Name of a Spanish Coney.” Coney was the old name for to stem from simple, but mistaken, associations. The rabbit so, instead of a pig from Guinea we have a rabbit name ‘guinea pig’ dates from the 17th century and the from Spain. first record of it (as ‘ginny-pig’) is in William Harvey’s The first use of the term ‘guinea pig’ to describe a medical textbook Anatomical exercitations, concerning person didn’t have the current ‘subject of an experiment’ meaning, but was a name for inexperienced midshipmen the generation of living creatures, 1653. The ‘guinea’ part of the name is perplexing. It was on the sailing ships mentioned above, as recorded in certainly a reference to a place rather than to the idea The Adventures of a Kidnapped Orphan, 1747: “He sent that the animals cost a guinea to buy. The guinea coin his nephew, at the age of fourteen, on a voyage as a was first struck in 1663 - after Harvey’s publication. Guinea-pig.” Guinea is in fact in East Africa but the little rodents, It wasn’t until the 20th century that the expression was properly called Cavia Cobaya, are from the Andean given its current meaning. This was first alluded to by region of South America. It could be that the name George Bernard Shaw, in Quintessence of Ibsenism Now derives from the ‘Guineamen’, which were sailing ships Completed, 1913: “The... folly which sees in the child that followed a route from the UK to Africa and then nothing more than the vivisector sees in a guinea pig: on to the Americas, plying the slave trade. It could also something to experiment on with a view to rearranging be that the distinction between West Africa and South the world.” Shaw, who was a noted vegetarian and America wasn’t as clear as it is now. ‘Guinea’ may have what would now be called an animal liberationist, was just been a synonym for ‘somewhere a long way across referring to the practice of using guinea pigs in scientific experiments. This had been going for some time by 1913. the sea’. ‘Pig’ is a little easier to understand. Cavies do at least The celebrated French chemist Antoine Lavoisier used look somewhat like tiny pigs and that was in the mind a guinea pig in an experiment on respiration in 1780. of the academics who first gave them a Latin name - Why guinea pigs were chosen as subjects of Cavia porcellus, porcellus meaning ‘little pig’. This is in experimentation isn’t entirely clear. They may not have line with the habit at the time of naming any small and cost the huge price of a guinea but, being imported from vaguely porcine creatures as ‘pigs’. George Gascoigne’s ‘Guinea’, they were more expensive than mice and rats, translation of Noble Arte Venerie, 1575 does that for which have now largely, if doubtless reluctantly, taken baby badgers: “There are Foxes and theyr Cubbes, and their place. Badgerdes and theyr Pigges.”

In a last ditch attempt to persuade the UK voters to vote Remain, it has been revealed that the European Union commissioners announced that agreement had been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. A five-year phased plan, below, was put forward for what was to be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short). “In the first year, “s” will be used instead of the soft “c.” Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas choking up On July 1st 1967 the European Community was formally created by the merger of the Common Market, the European Coal and Steel Community, and the European Atomic Energy Commission. In 2016 Britain has to import most of its’ coal. Not - as you might imagine - from the EU, but from Russia, Colombia, and the US. With the closure last year of the UKs’ last deep mine, and fierce resistance to applications for open cast mines on environmental grounds, our production continues to decline. And over the last 10 years, during which Russia has been a major supplier to the UK, our usage and imports have also declined, but not by enough to put right the effects in those countries which supply us. Not only is imported coal having to travel thousands of miles, it is also claimed by campaigners to have caused major devastation in one particular area of Siberia, where whole villages are said to have disappeared. Not just because the land they occupied has been destroyed by mining, but because many villagers have had to move due to the pollution which has accompanied the mining. This in turn has dramatically changed the lives of some small ethnic groups forced to move into the cities. In the main mining region of Siberia - Kuzbass - the coal industry is said to have contaminated over 90 percent of water supplies, while the UN has identified a high level of broncho pulmonary illnesses, with 80 per cent of related deaths caused by mining. In Kuzbass even the snow is black. It seems that the health risks caused by mining have simply been passed from our own backyards to those of other people who are much poorer and don’t have a NHS. On July 1st 1999 legislative powers were officially transferred from the old Scottish Office in London to the new devolved Scottish Executive in Edinburgh, based

at Holyrood, just a stones throw from the Palace. This followed the 1997 referendum in which Scotland voted for devolution. Three days after the UK’s EU Referendum Nicola Sturgeon, Scotlands’ First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, announced that Holyrood had the power to block the Brexit vote. She did add that it wouldn’t, which should of course be enough to reassure everyone. I have never been a huge fan of Cliff Richard, but he had an excellent backing group and has always seemed quite harmless. So I hope that he sues the socks off the BBC, whose coverage of a raid on his home a couple of years ago surely only happened because of his fame and Knighthood. Cliff has suffered enough as a result of the fallout from Operation Yewtree, and compared to Clement Freud he looks like a saint.
