the only way is up! mayor announces improvements for hua hin as annual tourists hit 2.5 million

hua hin, THAILAND In the last two issues of AWOL, and in many previous front pages, we have highlighted the need for the city’s infrastructure to be brought into line with the rapid expansion that is being experienced here. This expansion is visible to the naked eye, but it is also being confirmed in hard numbers, and a report by Roongroj Seeluangsawat, the chairman of the Hua Hin-Cha am Tourism Association, said the number of tourists visiting Hua Hin annually has reached 2.5 million, of whom 40 per cent are foreign tourists. He also forecast that there would be a 20-per cent increase of room availability in the town to cope with the swelling tourist numbers. There are currently some 13,000 hotel rooms available in the town. The Mayor, Nopporn Wuttikul, has announced that the town plan will develop involving a move of the municipality office, public schools and provincial waterworks office to suburbs; this will allow the redevelopment of these central parts to become car parks and to improve the town’s layout and traffic system. A budget of some 100 million baht is expected for these modifications. There is also a plan to invest in water purification equipment with a budget of 30 million baht so that the demand for water can be met, while another 11 million baht will fund the connection of raw water pipelines from nearby Phetchaburi province for 24-hour water transport. Mayor Nopporn also said that closed-circuit television cameras are to be installed around the town to assure tourists and others that Hua Hin is a safe place. While we will all wait to see if these improvements transpire, it is good to know that the authorities are aware of the problems the area faces; let’s hope the money becomes available and is spent wisely.
