police swoop

suspected paedophile arrested in hua hin

•A •Dutchman was arrested on Monday at his house in Borfai by officers from Thailand’s Department of hua hin

Special Investigations after they were tipped off by authorities in the Netherlands, from where he had fled charges related to the sexual abuse of children. The man, named as Mr.Reinold Klunder, was arrested on Monday, where the officers also found a ten year old boy, and removed bed linen, 6 computers, 2 mobile phones, 2 tablets, memory cards and CDs as evidence. Some news outlets also reported that Klunder admitted to luring boys under the age of 15 by telling them they could swim in his pool, and that he gave the boys food and admitted to later having sex with them and recording videos which he would distribute to his paedophile friends. It has also been reported that he worked in real estate and as a musician. A neighbour who spoke to reporters told them that they had heard he was a music teacher who was giving free lessons to the boys, but this appears to have been an attempt to explain the apparently frequent visits by young boys to his house. It has also been reported that as the DSI officers were leaving the house after the arrest that another young boy arrived at the house. Thailand and South East Asia has an unwanted reputation for attracting paedophiles and sex tourists, but this is the first report of this kind for the Hua Hin area, and we very much hope that the police are able to rid Thailand of any more paedophiles, and they have certainly stepped up their efforts, as it has been reported this week that 13 others were arrested in September and October, while around 58 have been brought to justice in the last two or three years, with another 125 ongoing investigations.

We are the only weekly newspaper in this area and we are looking for two motivated and engaging people to work in the key areas of sales and distribution. Requirements: • Thai Nationals • Good understanding of spoken and written English • Well presented • Previous experience in a sales environment useful but not a necessity • Ability to work to deadlines • Own transport (not essential but preferred) The positions will involve selling advertising space in the newspaper and online as the major task, as well as maintaining relations with existing customers and dealing with renewals of ads, and coordinating and monitoring the efficient distribution of the paper every week. Conditions: The positions are full time jobs and the successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week; however these hours will need to be spread flexibly, as this is not a normal 9 to 5, Monday to Friday office job as many existing and potential customers are only available to discuss their requirements or settle invoices in the evenings or at weekends. There will be sales targets which if achieved will generate this extra income. We anticipate this could result in an income averaging at least 20,000 baht a month, with exceptional candidates capable of earning much more. There will be a probation period of 115 days for anyone hired, with an assessment of performance at the end of it. Application: Please send an email to info@awolonline.net with the subject line “Employment Application” and include your reasons for wanting to work for AWOL, your previous work history, your personal details including phone number and address, and any other information you believe is relevant to your application. genie Dylan was practicing his golf swing in his front yard when he swung a little too hard and sent the ball through his neighbors window. Dylan ran over and rang the doorbell three times. After no one answered for a few minutes, he opened the door to see broken glass everywhere, a lamp lying on the ground, and a huge fat Arabian man wearing a turban sitting on the couch. Dylan asked, “Who are you?” The fat man replied, “I am a genie you have freed from that lamp.” Dylan questioned, “Oh man, do I get three wishes?” The genie replied, “Since you freed me by accident you only get two and I get one.” Dylan thought about it and realized what he wanted, “I want to be the best golfer ever.” The surprised genie said, “You sure? Most people wish for money, but okay. Now your wife gets one wish.” Dylan brought over his wife who wished right away, “I want a million dollars every week of my life.” The genie said, “Granted. And now for my wish, I have been cramped up in that lamp for many years so its been a while since I’ve been with a woman. I want one day of wild, crazy sex with your wife, Dylan.” Dylan said, “No way!” The genie replied, “Not even for a million dollars a week?” Dylan turned to his wife, who said, “I guess for all that, I should. Well, not until Dylan leaves.” Dylan said, “Okay, have fun, I guess,” and left. Dylan’s wife then proceeded to have wild sex for the rest of the day with the genie. When they were finished, the genie asked how old her husband was. She said, “Forty-five.” The Genie laughed and said, “Isn’t he a little old to be believing in genies?”

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does.”

women’s lib Brits of a certain age will remember that rural TV soap Emmerdale Farm, where nothing much happened until a plane crashed on it. These days of course it is updated and simply called Emmerdale, with a new image which includes some politically correct homosexuality and the obligatory murder or two. But in light of recent events the producers might want to review the opening scene, in which the camera pans across a couple sitting at a table in the pub, or at least on the parts of them visible under the table. Which is where a once quite innocent shot could become highly controversial. Why? Because the womans’ foot, in a suggestively high heeled shoe, uses a pointed toe to caress the lower leg of her male companion. In fact by the time you read this the scene could already have been censored in case women think it’s OK to abuse men in such a gratuitous fashion. Because let’s face it nothing, and no-one, seems to rise above the current high standards of moral codes expected in the UK, especially in that house of cards once known as Westminster, where the corridors of power are aptly named. The puzzling thing though is how so many supposedly strong women, who choose to go into tough careers like politics or acting, seem unable to deliver a quick slap when needed. Meanwhile some women in Pakistan are showing they really have what it takes to get on in a mans’ world. The story began with the collaboration between China and Pakistan to mine coal in the Thar desert, in the very south of Pakistan, where sand dunes cover an estimated 175 billion tonnes of the black stuff. Although poor quality the coal, along with hydro and liquefied natural gas, can, when mined, be used as a basis to fuel Pakistans’ energy plans. Plans that will require an increase from the 125 trucks currently being used to move surface earth from the mine, to an estimated 300 to 400 vehicles once the coal is exposed. Which is where the women come in, training as dump truck drivers. In an area where the traditional role of women is still very much in the home, or working in the fields, this is groundbreaking in more ways than one. Of the 30 women already in training only one was already able to drive a car, a sight still rare enough that people would laugh at her husband when he was in the passenger seat. Now with the advent of mining on such a huge scale, and 30 of their number already employed, many more women could take up the challenge which would lift their families out of poverty.

At the other end of the social scale are people who can afford the luxury of cruises, a market that Thailand might soon tap into. In fact more than 6 years ago people were predicting that a cruise ship terminal would be built in Cha Am, an idea which seems to have sunk without trace. Now though someone has done the maths, and come up with research suggesting high end cruise ship tourists spend 6174 baht a day, compared with ordinary tourists who spend a meagre 4000 a day on average. The fact that regular tourists usually stay for 10 days or more and could rack up an average spend of 40,000 baht, compared with those high end cruisers ferried ashore for just a few hours doesn’t seem to detract from the plan. By coincidence Hull has latched onto the cruise terminal idea as well, but here the plan has yet to overcome its’ first hurdle. Riverside residents are finding it hard to understand how the vision of a cruise ship filling their living room windows would be much more attractive than an open expanse of water. My money has to be on Thailand getting there first.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... A legend in one’s own lifetime Literal meaning is a living person of considerable fame. The original use of this phrase was ‘a legend in her lifetime’, written of Florence Nightingale by Giles Lytton Strachey, in his well-known book Eminent Victorians, 1918: The name of Florence Nightingale lives in the memory of the world by virtue of the lurid and heroic adventure of the Crimea. Had she died - as she nearly did - upon her return to England, her reputation would hardly have been different; her legend would have come down to us almost as we know it today - that gentle vision of female virtue which first took shape before the adoring eyes of the sick soldiers at Scutari. ... She was a legend in her lifetime, and she knew it. The ‘own’ is now almost always added to make ‘a legend in his/ her own lifetime’, although I can’t help thinking that Strachey’s version was better. The associated term ‘living legend’ derives of course from ‘a legend in one’s own lifetime’. This term sprang up in the USA in 1939 and immediately grabbed the imagination of writers there. In that year alone all of these people were described in print as living legends:

(1945)) Diego Rivera (artist) Fielding H. Yost (football coach) The ‘lost’ Apaches of northern Mexico D. B. MacRae (journalist) Strachey’s phrase has spawned imitations. ‘A legend in his own lunchtime’ is often used humorously about chefs or notorious drinkers (“Lunchtime O’Booze” was used by Private Eye magazine as a generic term for a habitually drunken journalist). Less affectionately, there’s also ‘a legend in his own imagination’, referring to those whose good opinions of themselves aren’t shared by others.

cock of the walk Spurs fans on verge of becoming insufferable

••

uK Tottenham Hotspurs fans basking in the glow of last week’s Champions League victory against Real Madrid are said to be on the verge of attaining levels of smugness not seen since the release of Ossies’ Dream in 1981. A 3-1 win against the team recognised by many as the best in the world has elevated supporters to levels of football snobbery not seen in parts of North London since the day Paul Gasgoigne knackered his knee. Football fan Simon Williams told us, “I work with two of them, and let me tell you the last week has been hellish. They’ve been polite, smiley and willing to chat to anyone. It’s absolutely sickening. “It’s as if a football match has somehow made their lives better. Personally, I think they need a slap and reminding that their entire existence is still as utterly pointless as it was yesterday. “One of them mentioned something

Left: Smug, moi? Mauricio Pottechino looking rather pleased with himself

about beating the best team in the world meaning that they are now the best team in the world, so I was left with no choice but to throw my coffee over him. He still kept smiling – the idiot.” The win sees Tottenham through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League in the spring, ensuring the smugness will last at least three months. Williams continued, “It’s bad enough that they’re forever taking the moral highground in which they seem to think we should value a goal at the end of 45 passes more highly than a goal a Tony Pulis side

would score – fortunately football doesn’t work that way. “I could just about put up with it whilst they weren’t winning anything, but it’s getting awfully close to the point where they might win some silverware now.” Arsenal fan Mikey James told us, “Daniel Levy will probably have plans to release a commemorative DVD for about £25. “Let them enjoy this moment, it will make the end of the season all the sweeter when they inevitably end up having won nothing.”

AWOL would like to express our condolences to the family and friends, and staff at Siam Microlight Aviation Services, following the sudden passing of Philip Andrew Lee
