hua hin, THAILAND The slow transition of Hua Hin from quaint fishing village to bustling city seems to have almost completed, with both the good and the bad aspects of that coming to the fore in recent months. We have covered the good many times, as it brings prosperity and jobs, but one bad aspect we feel is timely to report on now. An increasing number of foreign tourists and residents are falling victim to the criminal elements that are also attracted to the town, and one activity that seems to be on the increase is the targeting of drunk foreigners whose drinks are ‘spiked’, which often leads on to them being robbed of money and valuables, either in their own room or elsewhere. One tourist was found dead in his room this year after such a crime, having been given an overdose of the sleeping drug Xanax. Very often, victims have little or no memory of what happened, which makes police action difficult. As high season kicks in, AWOL wants to be sure that people are on their guard against the gangs who are perpetrating these crimes; never leave drinks unattended and avoid being taken to places alone that you are unfamiliar with. If in doubt, go to your accommodation or home, alone.
correction - borfai bike attack We would like to apologise to the Ayling family for some inaccuracies in the report we ran last week about the attack on Mr Paul Ayling. We stated that the police “apparently have a large number of suspects derived from numerous complaints made against Mr Ayling to them” but this is not correct, and we have been told that only one official complaint has been made. Mr Ayling is still in critical condition in hospital, and planned attempts to bring him out of a coma have been postponed for now. Police are reportedly interviewing suspects but no arrests had been made at press time.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. In like Flynn To be quickly and/or emphatically successful, usually in a sexual or romantic context. This phrase is commonly said to be a reference to Errol Flynn, the Australian film actor. Flynn was famous for his romantic swashbuckler roles in Hollywood films and for his flamboyant private life. His reputation as a hard-drinking, hell-raising ladies’ man was apparently well justified, although it has doubtless been enhanced by his delight in playing up to his image. For instance, he entitled his autobiography - My Wicked, Wicked Ways and also did nothing to dispel the incredible but nonetheless widespread rumours as to the the size of his manhood and the number of women who had shared his bed. Flynn was acquitted in February 1943 for the statutory rape of a teenage girl. The word in had been used with regard to success, good fortune or sexual conquest for some years prior to the 1940s; for example: John Mills’ Life Race-Horse, 1854: “The handicapper ... considerately classed me among the middle ones, and awarded 6 st. 12 lb. as my burthen. ‘He’s vell in,’ said my owner, ‘very vell in.’”; Alfred Mason’s Clementina, 1901: “His luck for the moment was altogether in.”; E. Wilson’s Twenties, 1923: “Well, did Mr. Wilson get it in tonight?” All of the above might lead us to believe that origin of the phrase ‘in like Flynn’ is clear. As so often though, things aren’t quite as tidy as they might first seem. The earliest recorded use of the phrase is in a December 1946 edition of American Speech: “In like Flynn, everything is O.K. In other words, the pilot is having no more trouble than Errol Flynn has in his cinematic feats.”
That doesn’t have the sexual connotations that the phrase acquired later. There’s also an earlier, albeit oblique, reference from 1942 - in The San Francisco Examiner (Sports section): “Answer these questions correctly and your name is Flynn, meaning you’re in, provided you have two left feet and the written consent of your parents.” Errol Flynn’s particular notoriety as someone especially likely to be ‘in’ in a sexual sense came about after his trial in 1943, although he was already known as a screen romantic lead. If the phrase does derive from his name then it appears to have been coined in regard to his all-round flamboyance and fame - which were both considerable by 1942 - rather than specifically his sexual success. Another possible figure who could plausibly have been the source of the phrase is the political organizer Edward J. Flynn. He was a campaign manager for the Democratic party during the 1930s and 40s and was well-known to be highly effective at arranging political successes. Such machiavellian organizers were known as bosses. Flynn, with some irony, called his autobiography ‘You’re the Boss’, in a reference to the American voting public. Edward J. Flynn had not been associated with the phrase ‘in like Flynn’ prior to efforts by etymologists to explain it though and no records from the 1940s make any such link. It seems very much more likely that Errol Flynn is the Flynn in question and, although the phrase may have been used before he was at the peak of his celebrity, it became well-known by association with him. In 1967 James Coburn starred in the film, ‘In Like Flint’. This was a sequel to the 1966 ‘Our Man Flint’ and presumably the screenwriters, on the lookout for another ‘Flint’ phrase, opted for a play on ‘In like Flynn’. There’s now some confusion between the two phrases and some use ‘In like Flint’ as if it were synonymous with ‘In like Flynn’.

Mr Barton, 50, dragged his piano up a mountain in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, to help raise money for blind elephants. He said: ‘It was a 50th birthday present to myself. My wife and I have been working with blind elephants for many years, and I thought it might be something they would enjoy to listen to. I sat down and thought, what do you play to an elephant? ‘You only get a short time, so I

It really puts the game in stark perspective, and no doubt a few of the players will not be able to play at their best because of this. However it is a crucial game for both sides, and the best tribute the teams can make is to give their all as Speed himself always did. The game could also do with being played in the same sporting spirit he displayed, but it does seem that kind of player is fast disappearing. As to the game itself we think the emotions and home advantage will see Newcastle win this, and really that is the only script that should be allowed on this day in particular.

obese olympics fans cause 2012 stadiums rethink
london, england Several thousand of the seats already fitted in the various stadiums at East London’s Olympic Village will have to be taken out and replaced due to concerns raised by Health and Safety inspectors who say the current seats would not be strong enough to withstand the weight of many of the American and European spectators. The replacement seats will also have to be much wider. This presents a major problem because the 80,000 seating capacity of the main Olympic Stadium formed part of the agreement with the International Olympic Committee when awarding the 2012 Olympic Games to the UK, and the government has made it absolutely clear that there is no more money available to increase the size of the stadium. Nevertheless additional space must somehow be found for
the wider seats now required. “The circumference of the running track will probably have to be significantly shortened” says Prime Minister David Cameron. “Sadly the much tighter track makes it unlikely we will see any world record times being set next year because obviously in order for the runners not to drift out of their respective lanes will mean they’ll have to slow down when turning the bends. And unfortunately the hundred metre sprint will have to start on one of those bends.” The throwing events of hammer and discus will probably still take place in the stadium, but the javelin competition will not. “Luckily we have the wide expanse of Hackney Marshes just across the road from the Olympic Village” points out Mr Cameron, “so

arrangements will be made for the javelin boys and girls to throw their sticks over there.” A further problem identified by the Health and Safety inspectors are the turnstiles people will have to go through. They say obese spectators could get jammed in them. “We’ll be smearing the turnstiles with grease to reduce the possibility of roly poly men and women getting stuck,” says Mr Cameron, “but admittedly some of our American visitors next summer could still find it a problem to slide through them. However, there will of course be plenty of strong policemen on duty to get any jammed spectators through the turnstiles with a hard helpful push.”
