EVERY PIECE A WORK OF ART PORZELLAN AUS WIEN PORCELAIN FROM VIENNA Josef Maria Hoffmann (1870-1956) war Gründungsmitglied, herausragender Designer und Architekt der berühmten „Wiener Werkstätte“. Er und seine Arbeiten für die Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur möchten wir in diesem Magazin besonders hervorheben.

Die exquisiten Porzellan-Objekte von Hoffmann und seinen Zeit­g enossen Michael Powolny und Franz von Zülow sind zeitlos moderne Beispiele für Wiener Porzellankunst.

Erstmals stellt Augarten eine limitierte Künstler-Edition vor: Sebastian Menschhorn, vielseitiger und viel beschäftigter Designer aus Wien (sebastianmenschhorn.com), hat mit nummerierten und von ihm selbst bemalten Mokka-Tassen Unikate geschaffen, die sich an Hoffmann und seine Entwür­fe anlehnen. In der Manufaktur wurden die sommerlich-frischen Dekore YOUNG&HEART und FRÜHLING weiterentwickelt; gemeinsam mit Porzellan rund um Valentinstag, Ostern und Muttertag spiegeln sie die Frühlings­s timmung wieder.

Besonderes Augenmerk wird in der ersten Nummer des Jahres 2015 den Veranstaltungen, Führungen und Seminaren im Schlossgebäude der Manufaktur hier im Augarten gewidmet, die unter „Erlebnis Augarten“ zusammengeführt sind.

Ein völlig anderes und neuartiges Projekt steht allerdings im Mittelpunkt unserer jüngsten Innovationen: Rund 18 Monate hat die Entwicklung gedauert. Mit mo°sound, einem kreativen Special-Interest-Anbieter aus Wien, wurde ein technisches Meisterwerk geschaffen. Der große Bru­der des kleineren „mo°speaker“ – eine nahtlose Porzellankugel mit einem Durchmesser von 23 cm und einem Volumen von fünf Litern – in aufwendiger Sprengform-Methode hergestellt und einem Breitband-Lautsprecher ausgestattet.

Akustisch wie ästhetisch ist damit ein weltweit einmaliges Objekt der Begierde nach dem optimalen Sound entstanden. Perfektio­n iert, um zu klingen!

Damit wird Wiener Porzellan von Augarten nicht nur optisch – sondern auch akustisch ein Erlebnis auf allerhöchstem Niveau.

Joseph Franz Maria Hoffmann – who was born on December 15, 1870 in Brnitce, Bohemia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and died on May 7, 1956 in Vienna – was one of the founding members of the famous Wiener Werkstätte and was among its exceptional designers and architects. He and a number of his works for the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory will be in the foreground of this issue of Augarten’s quarterly, along with the exquisite porcelain artefacts of his contemporaries Michael Powolony and Franz von Zülow: timelessly modern examples of porcelain artistry at its finest.

Augarten is pleased to present for the first time in its history a limited edition of artefacts designed by Sebastian Menschhorn (sebastianmensch­horn.com), a many-faceted designer from Vienna,

who is in great demand and has created a series of numbered mocha cups inspired

by Hoffmann and his designs that he has painted himself, and the Augarten Manufactory has also developed a new summery and fresh series called YOUNG@ HEART and SPRING that ref lects the seasons and sentiments of spring, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day. The first edition of the Augarten magazine in 2015 is also going to feature the events, tours, and seminars that are scheduled to take place in the palace-residence of the Manufactory.

However, a completely different and new project has been in the foreground of our interesting and innovative efforts.

Manufactory has developed a technical masterpiece: the big brother of the smaller “mo°speaker”: a seamless sphere of porcelain 23 cm in diameter and with a volume of five liters that has been constructed using the complicated Sprengform method and houses a high fidelity speaker. This globally unique achievement is an acoustic and an aesthetic object of desire that looks and sounds just perfect. As a result, Viennese porcelain from Augarten, which always has been a superlative visual experience, has been enhanced by a new acoustic dimension.

Gut, alt ist die Porzellanmanufaktur im Augarten und mit ihr das Wissen um die präzise Herstellung edelster Stücke aus Weißem Gold. Im Herzen jedoch sind wir jung geblieben und das zeigt unsere Form 31 YOUNG. Mit YOUNG@ HEART haben wir bereits Jugendlichkeit bewiesen – pastellige Farben als Randdekor auf einer schlichten zeitlosen Form! Mit dem SUNNY BREAKFAST stellen wir Ihnen im nächsten Heft ein besonders fröhliches Dekor auf der Form YOUNG vor.

Passend zum Frühlingsbeginn und der erwach­ enden Natur haben wir ein Motiv aus vergangenen Tagen der Alt Wiener Manufaktur wieder zum Leben erweckt und neu interpretiert: Ein frisches 2

Gräserdekor, das bereits um 1798 erstmals von den Malern Jakob Peter oder Karl Böhm entworfen und auf ein Service für die Familie Romanoff aufgebracht wurde. Zarte Blümchen zwischen leichten Grashalmen erwecken den Eindruck, dass das Por­ zellan in einer Frühlingswiese steht.

Was so leicht wirkt, erfordert von den Malerinnen und Malern wahres Können! Denn die einzelnen Grashalme werden in mehreren Malschritten schattiert, ebenso die Blüten. Die ersten Stücke mit dem Dekor FRÜHLING kamen bereits 2006 wieder in das Programm der Manufaktur und da es sich gerade zu Ostern größter Beliebtheit erfreut, erwei­ tern wir das Repertoire.

FRÜHLING auf dem Ostertisch: Tee-, Kaffee- und Kakaobecher sowie Eierbecher und Salzstreuer machen Lust auf ein Osterfrühstück (fast) im Grünen.

Whoever wants to stay young has to age first, as the old saying goes. The Augarten Porcelain Manufactory is good and old, and its knowledge about the precise production of the finest pieces of white gold has aged with it. But we have stayed young at heart as our Form 31 YOUNG testifies. We have documented our youthfulness with YOUNG@HEART: pastel colored rim décors on timelessly simple forms!

What could be more appropriate for the beginning of springtime with its awakening nature than reviving a motif from the olden days of the Viennese Manufactory: a décor of fresh grasses designed

already in 1798 by the painters Jakob Peter or Karl Böhm that was applied to a service for the Romanoff family. The delicate, little f lowers between the light stems of grass create the impression that porcelain is standing in a spring meadow.

This appears to be so easy but it demands genuine skill. The porcelain painters shade each blade of grass and every blossom in multiple steps. The first pieces with the SPRINGTIME décor were brought back into the program of the Manufactory in 2006 and have been especially popular at Easter time.

Therefore, we are expanding the repertoire.

NEUES DEKOR NEW DECOR BY VON SEBASTIAN SEBASTIAN MENSCHHORN MENSCHHORN Sebastian Menschhorn lebt und arbeitet als Grafik- und Produktdesigner in Wien. In profunder Kenntnis von Kulturund Kunstgeschichte übersetzt er Dekors, Formen und Funktionen in gegenwärtige Konsumartikel und Grafiken: Das Ergebnis sind aktuelle und dennoch zeitlose Entwürfe, die Geschichte als Wurzel haben und neue Geschichten erzählen.

Gegenseitige Anziehung hält unser Universum zu­ sammen. Sie führt zu Akkumulationen wie die Punkte auf den Tassen. Das Dekor GR AVITATION auf Espressotassen limitiert auf 120 Stück vom Designer selbst gemalt. Jeder Punkt ist mit der Feder gemalt. Jede Tasse ist eine Neukomposition. Auf Bestellung kann jedes andere Objekt von Augarten auch damit bemalt werden.

Sebastian Menschhorn lives and works as a graphic artist and product designer in Vienna. With his profound know­ ledge of art history and culture he translates décor, forms, and functions from the past into contemporary consumer goods and graphics. The results of this creative process are contemporary yet timeless designs that have historical roots while telling a new story.

Mutual attraction holds the universe together. It leads to accumulation like the dots on the cups. Décor GR AVITATION on mocha cups in a limited edition of 120 painted by the designer himself. Every dot is hand-painted by pen, and every cup is a unique composition. Every artefact from Augarten can be painted with this décor on order.

AUGARTEN INSIDE GLASIEREN GLAZING Teetassen, Pferde, Bodenvasen – jedes einzelne Stück wird, im Gegensatz zum Biskuitporzellan, nach dem ersten Brand glasiert. Feldspat, Quarz, Dolomit und Wasser sind die Bestandteile der Glasur, die an Buttermilch erinnert und ständig gerührt werden muss. Wie aufwendig kann das händische Eintauchen einer Bodenvase in diese milchige Flüssigkeit sein?

Drei Mitarbeiter tauchen die Vase in die Glasur. Eine mit Glasur gefüllte Bodenvase kann schnell 40 Kilo schwer werden. Diese muss rasch und gleichmäßig entleert werden, sonst wird die Glasur an einer Stelle zu dick. Nun wird die Vase außen gewaschen, d.h. von jedem einzelnen Glasurspritzer befreit, damit keine Unebenheiten entstehen und ein zweites Mal wieder von mehreren Mitarbeitern komplett in die Glasur getaucht, um die Außenseite zu glasieren – selbstverständlich aber nur soweit, dass keine Glasur mehr ins Innere der Vase f ließt. Im nächsten Schritt wird die Glasur vervollständigt. Mit Pinsel und Glasur wird die innere und äußere Schicht zusammengeführt. In der Glasur­ stube wird die Vase nun ein letztes Mal in die Hand genommen und die Sohlenstelle, also der Fuß der Vase, wieder von Glasur befreit, sonst würde das gute Stück im Brenn­ ofen bei 1380° C festbacken und vollkommen nutzlos sein.

Tea cups, horses, f loor vases,... each and every piece – in contrast to biscuit porcelain – is glazed after it is branded or fired. The glaze that consists of feldspar, quartz, dolomite, and water has the consistency of buttermilk and must be stirred constantly. How complicated can manually dunking a f loor vase into this milky f luid be?

Three coworkers are necessary to completely submerge the vase into the glaze mixture. A f loor vase full of glaze can weigh up to 40 kilograms, and it has to be emptied quickly and uniformly because otherwise the glaze will be uneven in thickness. Next, the exterior of the vase has to be washed in order to free it from individual glaze spots or scabs and to ensure that there are no irregularities on the finish. Then multiple coworkers submerge the vase completely in the glaze again but just deep enough so that glaze does not run into the interior of the vase. Completing the glaze then entails joining the interior and exterior glazed surfaces by hand using a brush and the glaze mixture. The finishing touch is put on the vase in the glazing workshop by removing the glaze from the bottom or the “sole” of the vase: otherwise it would be worthless after being fired in oven at 1,380 degrees Centigrade.

Gabi Pirkfellner, die Meisterin der Glasur, kam durch Zufall – als sie vor 28 Jahren in der Warteschlange für die Führer­ scheinprüfung einen Mitarbeiter von der Wiener Porzellan­ manufaktur kennen lernte – zu Augarten. Angefangen hat die gelernte Modefachfrau in der Figurenabteilung. Seit je­n er Zeit schlägt ihr Herz für Augarten und Wiener Porzellan.

The association of Gabi Pirkfellner, a master glazer, to Augar­ ten is completely accidental. Twenty-eight years ago she met a coworker of the Viennese Manufactory while waiting in line to take her driver’s test. Originally trained in clothing design, she started her career in the figurine department, and since then she has been in love with Augarten and Viennese porcelain.

Gabi Pirkfellner is not just a professional glazer; she also has mastered all of the tasks associated with the “white phase” of the production of porcelain starting with lifting plates out of their forms – or “ripping” them as the technical term goes – and ending with garnishing cups with handles.

She also loves to share her enthusiasm for “white gold” on tours with customers from all over the world.

Gabi Pirkfellner ist nicht nur Glasurprofi, sondern be herrscht alle Aufgaben des Weißbetriebes wie Teller von der Form abheben – oder abreißen, wie der Fachterminus lautet – Henkel an Becher garnieren und gibt ihre Begeisterung für das Weiße Gold bei Führungen an internationale Kundinnen und Kunden weiter.

Lautsprecherboxen sind seit jeher quaderförmig. Wie kommt man auf die Idee eines kugelförmigen Lautsprechers aus Porzellan?

RJ: Die Kugelform ist klangtechnisch ideal, weil die Schallwellen an der Innenwand ohne störende Interferenzen ref lektiert werden. Aber aus welchen Materialien lässt sich eine sehr harte, schwingungsarme Hohlkugel mit absolut gleichmäßiger Wandstärke herstellen? Da gibt es nicht viele, vielleicht nur das eine: Porzellan.

Loudspeakers traditionally have been box-shaped. Where did the idea for a spherical high fidelity speaker come from?

RJ: The sphere is an acoustically ideal form because the sound waves are ref lected on the inner walls without disturbing interferences. And what material can be used to make an empty, very hard, low-vibration spherical form with walls that are uniformly thick? There are not many and perhaps only one: porcelain.

Wie waren die ersten Reaktionen auf Ihre „runde“ Idee?

RJ: Für manche war das, als wollte einer ein Fahrrad mit eckigen Reifen bauen. Andere hatten dieselbe Idee auch gehabt, waren aber an der Umsetzung gescheitert. Die Kugel, diese so schlichte Form, ist schwieriger herzu­stellen als alle anderen. Es war die umgekehrte Quadratur des Kreises, die „Verkugelung“ des Quaders.

W hat were the initial reactions to your “round” idea?

RJ: Some people seemed to think that it would be like building a bicycle with square wheels. Other people had had the same idea but shipwrecked on its realization. The sphere – this absolutely simple form – is more difficult to produce than all others. It was an inverted squaring of the circle: making a cube into a sphere.

You did it. Are you satisf ied?

RJ: The bicycle sounds better than all of the others that I have heard.

RJ: I do not want to contribute to the inflation of big historical concepts. Let’s call it innovative.

Offensichtlich jedoch haben Sie sich mit Ihrer Innovation nicht begnügt.

RJ: Ja, ich leide an Perfektionismus, wollte einen noch besseren, größeren Lautsprecher. A ls AugartenPorzellan meinte, wir versuchen es, wurde es richtig spannend. Wir stießen an Grenzen des Machbaren. Aber die Leute bei Augarten sind ebenfalls Perfektionisten. Sie wollten einen völlig nahtlosen Guss, der sich nur mit der aufwendigen Sprengform-Technik erzielen lässt. Sie haben es geschafft, und das ist bewundernswert.

Apparently you are not completely satisf ied with your innovation.

RJ: Yes, I suffer from perfectionism and wanted a bigger and better loudspeaker. When Augarten Porcelain said let’s try it, it got really exciting. We reached the limits of the doable, but the people at Augarten are perfectionists, too.

They wanted a completely seamless cast that only can be executed using the complicated Sprengform method. They did it and that is impressive.

Wie groß wird Ihr nächster Lautsprecher?

RJ: Es geht nicht um Größe. Irgendwo ist das ideale Körpermaß für den idealen Klang. Dieses Maß zu finden und formzuvollenden würde heißen, eine ästhetische und musikalische Wahrheit zu fin­den. Es geht um Schönheit, und es geht um Musik.

How big are your nex t loudspeakers going to be?

RJ: It is not about size. Somewhere there is an ideal bodymass for an ideal sound. To find this ideal measure and to perfect it would entail finding an aesthetic and a musical truth. It is all about beauty, and it is all about music.

Augarten’s Easter world helps abbreviate the wait for Easter and provides cheerfully coloured décor for the celebration of Easter that is as inspiring as it is stylish.

Butterf lies, rabbits, and ducks convene on the Easter table. Forget-me-nots, crocus, tulips, and violets decorate plates, egg boxes, tea pots, and Easter bouquet pendants.

Wien um 1900: Die Ringstraße, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler, Robert Musil und zahlreiche Kaffeehäuser, in denen man bei Einspänner und Sachertorte über das Weltgeschehen philosophierte.

Teil dieser blühenden Zeit war Josef Hoffmann, der sich dem Gesamtkunstwerk verschrieben hat und das besonders hochwertige Wiener Porzellan zur Umset­z ­u ng seiner Entwürfe gewählt hatte.

Josef Hoffmann, geboren 1870 in Pirnitz (Österreich-Ungarn), begründete seine Karriere auf der Staatsgewerbeschule in Brünn, wo er mit Adolf Loos erste Schritte in der Lehre um das Gestalten erkundete. Nach der Arbeit am Militärbauamt in Würzburg zog es ihn nach Wien an die Akademie der bildenden Künste. Hier lernte er von den Besten der Wiener Architektenriege des Fin de Siècle: Otto Wagner und Karl Hasenauer.

Gemeinsam mit seinem ehemaligen Studienkollegen Joseph Maria Olbrich gründete er 1897 die Wiener Secession, verließ diese aber schon 1905.

Fast zeitgleich begann er seine wichtigsten Gebäude: Das Sanatorium Purkersdorf in Wien und das Palais Stoclet in Brüssel.

Der „Quadratl-Hoffmann“, wie er auch liebe­voll von den Wienern genannt wurde, ließ sich unter anderem von Mackintosh, einem schottischen Archi­ tekten, zu kubistischen Formen inspirieren.

1903 gründete Hoffmann gemeinsam mit Koloman Moser die Wiener Werkstätte. Dieser Zusammenschluss war auch 1923 bei der Wiedereröffnung der Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur im Augarten eine treibende Kraft. Augarten Porzellan war und ist wegen seiner hohen Qualität ein äußerst begehrtes Material bei den Künstlern, da es in den Möglichkeiten der Umsetzung einzigartig ist.

Hoffmann war auch lehrend tätig, an der Kunst­gewerbeschule Wien. Dort bildete er zahlreiche Designerinnen und Designer aus unter anderen Ena Rottenberg, die ein bis heute begehrtes Teeservice – ORIENT – für Augarten entwarf.

Josef Franz Maria Hoffmann verstarb im Mai 1956 in Wien.

Vienna around 1900. This was a truly special era: the monumental architecture of the Ringstrasse, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, and a multitude of coffee-houses, where people philosophized about world events over coffee and Sacher Torte. Joseph Hoffmann, who was dedicated to the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk and chose the especially high quality of Viennese porcelain as the medium to embody his design, was part of this period of cultural blossom.

Joseph Hoffmann was born on December 1870 in Brnitce, Bohemia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and laid the foundations for his career at a technical school in Brno, where he was first exposed to design (along with Adolf Loos). After working as a military engineer in Würzburg, Germany, he was drawn to Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with the grand masters of the day: Otto Wagner and Karl Hasenauer.

He founded the Viennese Secession in 1897 – along with his former classmate Joseph Maria Olbrich – but left this movement in 1905. Almost simultaneously he started work on two of his most important projects: the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, near Vienna, and Palais Stoclet in Brussels.

The visual vocabulary of “Square-Hoffmann,” as the Viennese affectionately called him, was inspired by the cubic forms of the Scottish architect Charles Mackintosh.

In 1903, Hoffmann founded the Wiener Werkstätte along with Koloman Moser, and this duo also was one of the driving forces behind the re-opening of the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory in 1923.

Augarten porcelain was a much sought after material by artists because its high quality provided them with opportunities to uniquely realize their ideas.

Hoffmann also was active as a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he trained many designers like Ena Rottenberg, who designed the still popular tea service ORIENT for Augarten.

The fine painting with DÉCO VIENNE shows Hoffmann’s talent to combine rigorous geometry with lyrical symbolism. In the spirit of the Gesamtkunstwerk, this luxurious décor also was used for glassware produced by the legendary Viennese company Lobmeyr.

Entworfen 1929 ist es auf den ersten Blick noch das Dekor, das dem „Quadratl-Hoffmann“ am ehesten zugeschrieben wird. Man darf diese Koryphäe unter den Kunsthandwerkern nicht unterschätzen, schließlich beherrschte er auch Mystisches wie das Teeservice ATL ANTIS und Spiele­ risches wie die MELONE.

At a first glance the décor designed in 1929 most probably could be attributed to “Square-Hoffmann.” One may not underestimate this luminary of the applied arts. After all, he demonstrated his capacity for the mystical with the tea service ATL ANTIS and the playful like the MELON.

Dieses verspielte Mokkaservice, entworfen 1929, wurde zunächst nur in gelb oder hellblau angeboten, wobei die Bemalung der Rillen immer über die Mitte gebrochen erfolgte. In ei­ner Luxus-Edition wurde das gesamte Service außen in Petrol und innen in Platin bemalt. Diese Variante findet man auch als begehrtes Sammlerobjekt im Porzel­ lanmuseum im Augarten.

Noch immer eine große Herausforderung an die Malerei sind die Wandungen, die besonderes Talent und viel Übung im Ansetzen des Pinsels bedürfen.

This playful mocha service, designed in 1929, was initially only available in yellow or light blue, and the ribbed sides of the cups allowed for a wide variety of different pattern possibilities. A luxury edition of this entire service was produced that was painted on the outside in teal blue and inside in platinum, and this version can be found as a much-desired collectible in the Augarten Porcelain Museum.

Painting the wall of the pieces in this service is a considerable challenge that demands a special talent combined with a lot of practice in handling the paint brush.

Fragil, wunderschön und vielfältig – tropische Orchideen galten in vergangenen Jahrhunderten als etwas ganz Besonderes. Sie wurden in den Regenwäldern gesammelt und mit dem Schiff nach Europa gebracht, wo sie teuer verkauft wurden. Ihre Pf lege alleine erforderte größte Sorgfalt. Die Orchidee vom Grafiker Franz von Zülow ist so farbenprächtig wie ihre echten Schwestern und wesentlich pf legeleichter. In den Dekorbüchern der Manufaktur ist die von Keramikmeister Michael Powolny entworfene Vase mit dem fantasievollen Dekor aus Zülows Feder verzeichnet. Somit ist diese Vase eine hervorragende Arbeit zweier großer Künstler, die sowohl die Malerei als auch den Formenreichtum der Porzel­ lan­m anufaktur nachhaltig beeinf lusst haben.

Michael Powolny hat mit seinem Service OPUS eine Form entworfen, die aufgrund ihrer modernen Linie noch immer im aktuellen Programm der Manufaktur zu finden ist. Neben dem Service hat der ausgebildete Hafner und Absolvent der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule auch einige Skulpturen entworfen unter anderen die zarte DAPHNE. Der Grafiker Franz von Zülow ließ sich den Papierschnittdruck patentieren – eine Form der Schablonentechnik, die es ermöglicht Stege stehen zu lassen. Dadurch ergeben sich zarte Umrisslini­e n, die den Rahmen für große Farbf lächen bilden. In dieser Weise designte von Zülow das jugendliche Dekor JEUNESSE – Verspieltheit und technisches Können fügen sich in diesem Dekor harmonisch zusammen.

Beide Künstler – Powolny und von Zülow – waren Mitglieder der „Wiener Werkstätte“ und der Secession und damit kreative Kollegen des Wiener Jugendstilmeisters Josef Hoffmann.

Fragile, beautiful, and diverse: tropical orchids have been considered something special for centuries.

They originally were gathered in tropical rain forests and brought to Europe by ship, where they were sold at high prices, and maintaining them demanded great care. The orchid by the graphic artist Franz von Zülow is just as colorful as its real life sisters and substantially easier to care for. In the archives of the Manufactory, one of the décor books has the vase designed by the ceramic master Michael Powlony with the imaginative décor from Zülow’s pen. This vase is an exceptional collaborative work of two great artists, who exercised an enduring inf luence on the painting as well as the repertoire of forms a the Porcelain Manufactory.

The design of Michael Powolny’s service OPUS is in light of its modern lines still in the current program of the Manufactory. In addition to this service, the trained potter and graduate of the Vienna School of Applied Arts also designed a number of figures, including the delicate DAPHNE. As a graphic artist, Franz von Zülow developed and patented a special method of paper-cut stencil printing that could be applied to porcelain which is characterized by the delicate borderlines that frame large areas of color. Zülow used this method to design the youthful décor JEUNESSE which harmonically combines playfulness with technical expertise.

Both artists – Powolny and Zülow – were members of the “Wiener Werkstätte” and the Viennese Seccession and as such colleagues of Josef Hoffmann, the master of Viennese Jugendstil.

Besonders bestechend sind die natürlichen Blumendekore der Porzellanmanufaktur. Historisch betrachtet zählen sie zu den ältesten Mustern der Porzellanmalerei in Europa.

Passend dazu ist die WIENER ROSE zum beliebtesten Dekor geworden und ist inzwischen eine Art Markenzeichen der Manufaktur, obwohl sie gemessen an den reichhaltigen Blumenbouquets der Gründungszeit noch recht jung ist.

Im Seminar malen Sie mit Hilfe von unserer Meistermalerin Alt-Wiener- oder moderne Blumenmotive in klassischer Wiener Maltechnik. So entstehen Ihre ganz eigenen Designs oder aber Sie orientieren sich an einem unserer Dekore. In jedem Fall halten Sie ein Unikat in der Hand auf das Sie besonders stolz sein können.

Zwitschernde Vögel sind die ersten Boten des Frühlings und den ganzen Sommer hindurch erfreuen wir uns an ihrem Gesang. Diesen können wir leider nicht auf Porzellan festhalten, aber das anmutige Aussehen der zart gefie­ derten Freunde. Wie Blumen gehören auch Vögel zu den beliebten naturalistischen Dekoren. Ihre liebliche Gestalt und das bunte Gefieder sind eine wunderschöne Zier­de für das feine weiße Porzellan.

Die beeindruckende Indischmalerei ist inspiriert von künst­lerischen Elementen der fernöstlichen Mythologie. Kenn­ zeichnend für diese frühe europäische Malkunst sind die zart ausgeführte Federzeichnung, die Lasur sowie die raffinierte Schattierung. Sie lernen in diesem Seminar die erforderlichen Maltechniken, um die aufwendigen Motive in traditioneller Indischmalerei umsetzen zu können.

Passend zum Frühlingsstart wird in diesem Seminar ge­ zeigt, wie Sie zauberhafte Oster- und Frühlingsdekore auf Ihre weißen Stücke malen können. Ihrer Fantasie sind dabei keine Grenzen gesetzt oder Sie orientieren sich an einem Dekor aus unserem Repertoire.

Mit unserer Meistermalerin Maria Wimmer kann die Kunst des Porzellanmalens erlernt werden. Ihre Schwerpunkte sind zarte Blumendekore, fröhliche Vögelchen, indisch angehauchte Dekore sowie Osterthemen als saisona­les Highlight.

Maria Wimmer ist seit 1975 in der Manufaktur als Malerin tätig und vermittelt in den Seminaren kleinen Gruppen die Grundlagen der jahrhun­derte­ alten Handwerkskunst.

As the only porcelain manufactory in the world that provides visitors insights into the real-time, on site production of porcelain we are in the process of expanding the Augarten experience. Picturing Birds

The natural f loral décor patterns of the Viennese Manufactory are especially striking. In historical terms, they are among the oldest examples of porcelain painting in Europe.

The VIENNESE ROSE as one of the most popular decorative motifs is a perfect example thereof and has become an unofficial trademark of the Manufactory, although it is in terms of Augarten’s rich collection of f loral patterns from the 19th century a relatively young invention.

At our seminar, you can learn with our master painter how to paint historical or modern f loral motifs using the classic Viennese technique or be exposed to Indian painting methods. You can either create your own designs or use Augarten décor as a point of oriention. One way or the other, at the end of the exercise you will hold a unique artifact in your own hands.

Chirping birds are the first harbinger of spring, and their songs are a source of pleasure for us all summer. Unfortunately their song cannot be captured on porcelain but the looks of our small feathered friends can be. Like f lowers, birds belong to the most favorite naturalistic décors. Their delicate appearance and varicolored feathering are wonderful decorate motifs on the fine white of porcelain.

Maria Wimmer will teach you the fine tips and tricks of painting birds on cups, plates, and other pieces.

Springtime and Easter Motifs Just in time for the start of spring, this seminar shows you how to paint magical Easter and springtime décor on white porcelain. Paint as you like! Let your fantasy roam freely or take décor from the Augarten repertoire as a point of orientation.

Indian Painting The striking feather of Indian painting is inspired by the artistic elements of far eastern mythology. The main caracteristics of this early european painting technique are fine nib drawing, translucent painting and delicate shading. In this seminar you have the opportunity to learn the basic techniques for creating elaborated motifs of traditional Indian painting.

FIGURENSEMINAR PAINTING FIGURINES WITH PETER MADER MIT PETER MADER Jeder der in der Manufaktur schon einmal eine Führung besucht hat, weiß um die herausfordernde Arbeit der Figurenherstellung Bescheid. In vielen Einzelteilen gegossen – bei manchen Stücken bis zu 80 – wird jeder Teil mit dem anderen verbunden und so zu einem Ganzen zusammengefügt. Peter Mader ist Meister in diesem Fach und gibt sein Wissen in diesem ganz besonderen Seminar weiter.

Zusammen mit Peter Mader gießen Sie die Einzelteile Ihrer Figur und lernen diese mit den notwendigen Werkzeugen zusammenzusetzen.

Everybody who has had a tour through the Manufactory is well informed about the challenges associated with the production of figurines. They start with pouring porcelain into molds to create the individual parts – in some cases up to 80 – and then the parts are assembled together to make a whole. Peter Mader is a master in this discipline and shares his knowledge in this special seminar.

In this seminar, you work together with Peter Mader, who will show you how to pour the individual parts of your figurine and teach you how to put them together with the necessary utensils.

GOLDMALEREI PAINTING GOLD WITH ISIDOR STERN MIT ISIDOR STERN Das goldene Händchen der Malerei hat Isidor Stern.

Er leitet das Seminar in dem Sie Ihren Stücken die höchste Veredelung verleihen können. Isidor Stern vergoldet seit 1980 das Porzellan mit echtem Gold, das in Königswasser gelöst und mit Kohlenasche gemischt als dunkle Farbe auf das jeweilige Stück aufgebracht wird.

Im Brand verglüht das Königswasser zusammen mit der Asche und nur das 24-karätige Gold bleibt am Porzellan haften.

Isidor Stern has a golden hand for painting, and he leads the seminar that can teach you how to add a golden touch to your pieces. Isidor Stern has been gilding porcelain with real gold since 1980. The gold is dissolved in an acidic solution called aqua regia and then mixed with ash to create a dark color that is applied to pieces of porcelain.

Firing the painted pieces at high temperatures burn up the aqua regia together with the ash and bind the 24 carat gold on to the porcelain.

DER GARTEN FÜR THE GARDEN FOR LITTLE ARTISTS KLEINE KÜNSTLER Eine inzwischen beliebte Tradition ist das im Schloss und in unseren Filialen stattfindende Kindermalen. Kleine Künstler gestalten ganz besondere Geschenke zu Ostern, zum Muttertag oder zu Weihnachten. Jedes Kind kann aus einem Sortiment von kleinen Vasen, Tellern, Tassen etc. ein Stück wählen und unter liebevoller und professioneller Betreuung bemalen - der Fantasie sind dabei keine Grenzen gesetzt.

Während der Veranstaltung können Eltern bzw.

Großeltern das Porzellanmuseum besichtigen oder sich im Café Restaurant Augarten kulinarisch verwöhnen lassen. Nach einer Woche ist das gebrannte Kunstwerk abholbereit, kann auf Wunsch aber auch versandt werden.

Painting for children has become a popular tradition at the Manufactory as well as in Augarten’s branch stores, and it provides little artists with an opportunity to design special presents for Easter, Mother’s Day, or Christmas. Each child can paint a piece of porcelain, and there are no limits to children’s fantasy!

At these events, the little artists receive affectionate and professional guidance as they are familiarized with the technique of painting porcelain, and each child can chose his or her own artefact to decorate. The assortment includes, for example, small vases, boxes, and plates.

W hile the kids are working, their parents or grandparents can visit the Porcelain Museum or spoil themselves with good food and drink at the Café Restaurant Augarten. One week later, the fired and finished work of art can either be picked up or mailed (upon request).

FÜHRUNG DURCH TOUR ACROSS THREE CENTURIES DREI JAHRHUNDERTE Um die hohe Kunst des Porzellanmodellierens oder Porzellanmalens zu erlernen, braucht man ein Leben lang. Für das einfachste Dekor immerhin nur drei Jahre. So könnte man die Handwerkskunst, welche mit der Mixtur aus Feldspat, Quarz und Kaolin in höchs­ ter Vollendung arbeitet, beschreiben.

Jeder Arbeitsschritt erfordert Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten. Sei es im Formenbau, in der Gießerei, im Modellieren, in der Malerei für das Rändern oder Goldpolieren jeder von Ihnen ist ein Meister seines Faches.

Bei einer Führung durch die Manufaktur in­ klu­s ive Museumsbesuch wird den Besuchern die Geschichte des Hauses dargestellt, die Ausgangsprodukte für das Porzellan erklärt, das Zusammenspiel der Spezialisten in der Herstellung unserer einzigartigen Produkte nähergebracht sowie die fertigen Stücke gezeigt.

Mastering the high art of modeling porcelain or painting porcelain is a life-long enterprise. The simplest décor requires a minimum of three years.

This is one way of looking at the applied art of working with a mixture of feldspar, quartz, and kaolin.

Each and every step in the process of production requires specialists. Master craftsmen (and craftswomen) are responsible for building forms, pouring porcelain, modelling, and painting rims or polishing gold.

On tours through the Manufactory and its Museum, visitors get an overview of the history of Augarten Porcelain, are exposed to the materials out of which porcelain is made, learn about the interplay of specialists in the production of genuinely unique products, and see the finished artefacts.

Our guides are trained to escort you through the Manufactory and to explain the production and history of Viennese porcelain.

Die erste Sonderausstellung des Porzellanmuseums im Augarten im Jahr 2015 beleuchtet einen beson­ders feinen Aspekt der Diplomatie während des Wiener Congresses der Jahre 1814–1815. A lle ge­k rön­t en Häupter, hochrangige Politiker, aber auch die kultivierten Schaulustigen dieses denkwürdigen Zusammentreffens in der kaiserlichen Residenzstadt ließen es sich nicht nehmen, der Porzellanmanufaktur einen Besuch abzustatten. Listen diplomatischer Geschenke, Tagebücher und Reiseberichte schildern die Bewunderung, die der Kaiserlichen Manufaktur und ihren Produkten entgegengebracht wurde.

Die Ausstellung „Feines Porzellan, hohe Politik“ möchte anhand ausgewählter Exponate (darun ­t er Leihgaben des MAK- Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst, Wien, der Silberkammer, Wien, sowie aus Privatsammlungen) den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen von den Koalitionskriegen und dem siegrei­c hen Erz­ herzog Carl bis hin zu den privaten und öffentlichen Festlichkeiten des Wiener Congresses nachspüren.

Eine der Widrigkeiten dieser Zeit war der Umstand, dass Napoleon eine der liebsten Vergnügungen der Wiener und Wienerinnen, den Genuss von Kaffee, unerreichbar machte. Durch die Kontinentalsperre von 1811 war die Einfuhr von Kaffee nicht mehr möglich, zahlreiche Zeitdokumente beschreiben die Sehnsucht nach dem anregenden Getränk. Mit der Auf hebung des Einfuhrverbots im Jahr 1813 erheiterte sich die Stimmung, Kaffee war wieder erhältlich und die Manufaktur jubelte über die Bestellungen von unvorstellbaren 35.000 Paar Kaffeeschalen.

FEINES PORZELL AN, HOHE POLITIK Zum Caffée beim Wiener Congress 1814–1815 Porzellanmuseum im Augarten 9. März bis 30. Mai 2015 Eröffnung 9. März 2015, 18 Uhr Der symbolische Wert, der den exquisiten K affeetassen der Zeit um den Wiener Congress zukommt, steht im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung. Das Rahmenprogramm beinhaltet eine musikalische Matinée und thematische Kuratorenführungen.

The first special exhibition in 2015 at the Augarten Porcelain Museum highlights a particularly fine aspect of diplomacy during the Vienna Congress in the years 1814-1815. Royals, senior politicians, as well as cultured onlookers did not want to miss this memorable meeting in the imperial capital and used the opportunity to pay a visit to the porcelain manu­ factory. Lists of diplomatic gifts, diaries and travel reports describe the admiration for the imperial manufactory and its products.

By means of selected exhibits (including loans from the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, the Imperial Silver Collection, and from private collections), the exhibition “Coffee at the Congress” aims to shed light on the political and social developments during the Napoleonic Wars and the victorious era of Archduke Carl.

One point of contention during that time was the fact that Napoleon made one of Vienna's favorite pastimes, the consumption of coffee, impossible.

Due to the Continental Blockade of 1811 the import of coffee was halted and many contemporary documents describe the deep longing for the stimulating drink. The lifting of the ban in 1813 brightened the mood and the manufactory was delighted by the order of an unprecedented 35,000 coffee cups.

The symbolic value of the exquisite coffee cups from the times of the Vienna Congress is the focus of the exhibition. The cultural program includes a musical matinee and thematic curator tours.

Mal verliehen wurde, hat das Porzellanmuseum im Schloss Augarten eine würdevolle Auszeichnung erhalten. „Mit diesem Preis weisen wir auf die Qualität der vielfältigen österreichischen Museumslandschaft hin […]. Die prämier­ ten Museen präsentieren, vermitteln und bewahren das kulturelle Erbe Österreichs und dokumentieren die Vielfalt unseres Landes in herausragender Weise“, so Kulturminister Josef Ostermayer.

The award-winning museums convey and preserve the cultural heritage of Austria while documenting the diversity of our country in an outstanding way,” said cultural minister Josef Ostermayer.
