Liars at a Funeral - Digital Program

Page 1

We’re delighted to welcome you to Alberta Theatre Projects and our production of Liars at a Funeral. Since day one, ATP has proudly supported Canadian playwrights, plays, and artists. We’re incredibly proud that this show is a 100% Canadian, cross-provincial collaboration with our friends at Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops, BC.

Acclaimed Canadian writer Sophia Fabiilli has crafted a script that is funny, clever, and insightful in equal measure. You’ll recognize yourself and others in the characters, and be reminded that family relationships can be complex—especially when emotions run high during pivotal moments like funerals. Much like the families we see on stage, the process of theatre-making is filled with diverse personalities, differing opinions, and a rollercoaster of emotions—all of which eventually bloom into beautiful storytelling. You, our audience, complete this chosen theatre family.

Whether you’re new to ATP or a long-standing member of our community, thank you for joining us for the final production of our milestone 50th Anniversary Season. Don’t miss your chance to be part of what’s to come in 2025-26... it’s going to be LEGENDARY.

With gratitude,

I’m thrilled to direct this production of Liars at a Funeral in collaboration Alberta Theatre Projects. I love how Sophia deftly intertwines whip with deep heart.

Working with set and lighting designer Anton deGroot, costume designer Abbie Brokenshire and sound designer KP Smith is such a treat! Anton and I imagined the funeral home as a repurposed small-town diner, and this initial impulse moved all design elements toward a mid-century inspired aesthetic. Although the play is set in 2025, the surroundings are layered with various eras of fashion, music and interior design. This bright and playful approach is a nice juxtaposition to the feeling of most funerals and highlights Mavis’ playful approach to death.

The cast is brilliant! Each of them brings such a sense of comic timing, as well as a deep understanding of human nature to their roles. Our stage management team is so collaborative, thoughtful, and prepared. The Alberta Theatre Projects staff are super generous and filled with creative spirit. It’s such a dream team!

It is my hope that Liars at a Funeral can be a source of joy for you and also give you the opportunity to meditate on the liminal nature of our existence in these human bodies. “We’re here for a good time not a long time” are lyrics that play in my mind when rehearsing this play. I feel lucky to share this beauty work with you and hope that you enjoy every moment of it.
