Welcome to The Seafarer and the opening of Alberta Theatre Projects’ 50th Anniversary Season. It’s an absolute pleasure to have you join us as we begin this landmark year with a story that resonates so profoundly with our team. As we celebrate five decades of bold, thought-provoking, and innovative theatre, The Seafarer serves as the perfect launch—a gripping, darkly comic tale that speaks to human connection, redemption, and the complexities of the human spirit.
This season is not only a celebration of where we’ve been, but a look toward where we’re going. For decades, ATP has fostered bold narratives and amplified a wide array of voices, and we are committed to continuing this legacy with the extraordinary lineup we’ve prepared for you.
The Seafarer is especially significant, as it marks the return of Canadian icon Paul Gross to the Calgary stage, with a stellar cast and creative team who have brought every ounce of passion and expertise to this production. We hope you enjoy the journey this story takes you on, just as we look forward to the journeys we will all take together throughout this 50th Anniversary Season.
Thank you for being a part of Alberta Theatre Projects’ story, past, present, and future.
With gratitude and excitement,
The title of this play comes from an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poem from 755 A.D. of the same name. In the script of The Seafarer, Conor McPherson begins with this epigraph from Richard Harmer’s translation of that poem:
He knows not Who lives most easily on land, how I Have spent my winter on the ice-cold sea Wretched and anxious, in the paths of exile Lacking dear friends, hung round by icicles While hail flew past in showers …
—Anonymous
The Seafarer, c. 755 A.D.
McPherson sets this play on Christmas Eve: a time when candles and lights are put out to fend off the darkness of the night. For the faithful it can be a deeply spiritual occasion. For many it is a time for gathering with loved ones, but for some lonely souls it is a time of estrangement. In his writing, McPherson constantly returns to themes of isolation, redemption, and the mystery of the unknowable. In an interview, McPherson once said this of all Irish plays: “If there’s a message, it’s a simple one: I know you’re afraid of dying alone in a ditch. I am too. Let’s be together.”
Thank you for choosing to be together today with us at the theatre. Personally, the act of coming together to share in storytelling always fills my cup. It is a great honour to direct the first production of ATP’s 50th Anniversary Season. The cast and creative team have been a dream. I am grateful to Haysam Kadri for inviting me to helm this show, and I look forward to watching ATP flourish under his inspired leadership. I hope you enjoy.
