We are thrilled to welcome you to Alberta Theatre Projects for our holiday presentation of Charlotte’s Web! As we celebrate the joy and wonder of this timeless story, we invite you to immerse yourself in E.B. White’s beloved tale of friendship, resilience, and kindness.
This season is extra special to us as we continue to honor 50 years of inspiring stories and community connections here at ATP. Charlotte’s Web is a story about finding hope and beauty in unlikely places – a perfect reminder for the holiday season. Whether you’re a longtime friend of ATP or joining us for the first time, we hope this story of friendship and courage will bring warmth to your hearts.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us. Your support means the world to us and keeps the magic of live theatre thriving in Calgary.
Warm wishes for a joyful holiday season,
ATP is my favourite place to be during the Holiday Season - a theatre that has always felt like “home” to my heart. I am delighted to be back in my home town with dear, dear friends, colleagues and family.
Working on this production has been an absolute delight - bringing back warm memories of sitting on a hopscotch carpet, at the back of Miss Brown’s Grade 2 classroom in Highwood Elementary School, where she would read Charlotte’s Web out loud to us for the last 10 minutes of class every day. I recall that my 8-year-old self thought the descriptions of Wilbur’s slop sounded DELICIOUS!
Re-reading Charlotte’s Web some 40+ years later in preparation for rehearsals, I still think the slop sounds delicious, but this time around I was struck at how sweet, simple, and frank the story is. I have young nephews now, kiddos I would do anything to protect from the big, bad, tumultuous world, and yet here are Charlotte, Wilbur, and the barnyard animals to remind us that we’re not always going to agree on everything, or get along with each other. We still have to live together. We’re also reminded that all it takes is one friend with the confidence to pursue a heart-felt belief to change how a community thinks, and maybe even save a life. Isn’t that a message worth revisiting again, and again?
Wilbur says it best, “Whatever will happen, will happen. I may not live as long as I like, but I’ve lived very well. A good life is much more important than just having a long life. So, starting now, I’m going to stop worrying about myself. There are more important things than just thinking about yourself all the time.”
A few of my oldest, dearest pals are in this production, along with some new ones I hope to keep for life. Each one of them has a heart that shines through the twinkle in their eyes. We have laughed and laughed during rehearsals, we have also shed a few tears for a Spider who gave all her love and asked for nothing in return. I hope you enjoy these wonderful humans as much as I do.
REbecca Northan Director, Charlotte’s Web

Memorable ATP family show experiences include directing the swashbuckling adventure, Treasure Island, playing a loveable Badger in Toad of Toad Hall, and a menacing Tiger in The Jungle Book.
