King James - Digital Program

Page 1

Welcome to Alberta Theatre Projects and our production of King James!

Whether you’re a die-hard basketball fan or simply love a great story, we’re thrilled to have you with us for this powerful play about sports, friendship, and the experiences that bring meaning to our lives.

This season has been nothing short of remarkable. As we continue to celebrate ATP’s 50th Anniversary, we’ve witnessed an incredible resurgence in audience engagement and support. From the magic of Charlotte’s Web to the gripping drama of The Seafarer, your enthusiasm has reminded us why theatre remains a vital part of Calgary’s cultural fabric. Your presence in our theatre fuels our passion and reaffirms the importance of live storytelling.

At its core, King James is about connection—between two friends, between fans and their team, and between a city and its shared history. In many ways, it mirrors what we strive for at ATP: bringing people together in this amazing city for unforgettable experiences.

We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends at Theatre Aquarius for their invaluable collaboration in bringing this production to life.

Thank you for being part of this extraordinary season. Let the game begin!

With Gratitude,

As a lifelong sports fan, the deep, often hard-to-explain bond we form with our favorite teams and players is something I’ve always found relatable. When I first encountered King James, I was immediately struck by how this play captures the essence of that connection— how it goes beyond the game itself, becoming a part of our lives and relationships.

King James isn’t just a play about basketball. It’s a powerful exploration of friendship, loyalty, and the human need for connection. We see two men, bonded by their shared passion for the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James, navigate the highs and lows of life, using sports as both a bridge and a mirror to their own experiences. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast or not, the themes of camaraderie, change, and personal growth resonate on a deeply human level.

My vision for this production is rooted in the hope that you, our audience, will see yourselves in these two fascinating characters. Whether through the lens of sports, friendship, or the challenges of life, I believe there is something in this story that speaks to us all. It’s about the ways in which we find common ground, even when the game—or life— doesn’t go as planned.

Thank you to Mary Francis Moore and the entire team at Theatre Aquarius for their collaboration, commitment, and energy. We hope James keeps you engaged until the final buzzer and stays with you well beyond the performance.

King James was co-commissioned by Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director, David Schmitz, Executive Director, and Center Theatre Group, Michael Ritchie, Artistic Director, Douglas C Baker, Producing Director, and received its world premiere in 2022 in co-productions at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago and Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles.

King James is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service imprint. (www.dramatists.com)
