Q
uickwire’s customers have been asking for a prewired junction box that can be used with flexible cable since the company first launched its Quickwire Splitter and Switch and Load. Well, we have good news – Quickwire’s design team has been working hard to come up with the perfect solution; the new Quickwire plug-in T-Connector. The new plug-in T-Connector offers the same dramatic time-savings and ease of use as all Quickwire junction boxes, and amongst other things is perfect for use in conjunction with downlighters. So, what is the T-Connector? It’s a Quickwire junction box that consists of a plug and socket. The plug accepts flexible cable (usually to wire up a downlight), and the socket consists of two Quickwire solid core twin and earth, loop in loop out connections. One of the T-Connector’s most useful applications is rapidly connecting downlights. One T-Connector is used per lighting point. The T-Connector Socket is used for the first fix, to create the lighting
spine. The T-Connector plug is then wired to a downlight and simply plugged in at third fix. The complete T-Connector and plug will fit through a hole in the ceiling with a diameter as small as 30mm, making it suitable for even the tiniest of downlights.

IT’S BACK TO WORK — FOR NOW

elcome to the June issue of ECN. During the most recent lockdown review back on May 11, PM Boris Johnson declared that, “Those in construction or manufacturing should be actively encouraged to go to work.” Although construction workers were already permitted to continue working even during the initial (and strictest) lockdown period at the end of March and into April, figures from data provider Glenigan indicate that 65% of sites had actually closed regardless – so the news that they were free to re-open would have been welcomed by many across the electrical contracting sector. Figures from Build UK show that work has already restarted on 73% of its contractor member sites in the aftermath of the PM’s announcement. However, issues remain, and with social distancing in place and people still being advised to avoid public transport – particularly in London – workers are having to adapt their working practices accordingly, which is no mean feat. Ensuring that you have the correct face masks and PPE to be
able to go about your business safely is yet another consideration, and we have some really good advice and insight regarding this on page 18. Of course, this an ever-evolving situation and Government guidelines are liable to change at short notice, so do keep tabs on our website and social media channels for the latest industryrelated updates. The silver lining from the situation, if you can call it that, is the fact that the sector has been so resolute, with many companies launching webinars and a wide variety of online training sessions to help contractors ‘upskill’ during these potentially quieter times. A good number of them are covered on this month’s training page, and being able to partake in these from the comfort of your own home – without having to give up an entire day to attend in person – could prove hugely beneficial (especially with many also being free of charge). Next month we will continue our coverage of the pandemic, along with special features looking at Circuit Protection & Switchgear, Fire, Safety & Security, and LED Lighting. INDUSTRY NEWS NEW POSTERS TO PROTECT EMPLOYEES ON SITE In another initiative to support the construction sector in Scotland during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum has started distributing protective signage for key workers carrying out emergency and essential projects. The posters, designed to be displayed on sites or on vans, carry the legend – Key Worker: Carrying out Essential Work. They are designed to deflect reported harassment and abuse which has been directed at employees by members of the public. The signage will alert the public to the fact that workers they see in the streets or on sites are not flouting the rules but instead are performing vital roles, in line with guidelines, to ensure that the fabric of the country remains in good condition during the lockdown. John McKinney, Secretary of Forum members the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, the Stone Federation and the Scottish Contractors Group, says, “As a consequence of mixed messaging from government, there has been some confusion among certain members of the public about what is essential working. “However, that is no excuse for harassing people who are going about their legitimate business, and we hope these signs, which carry an information helpline number, will help clarify the situation.” CICV Forum, cicvforum.co.uk
LOCKDOWN A CHANCE TO UPSKILL, SAYS BUREAU VERITAS
GARY WORRALL NAMED NEW ECA PRESIDENT
As the electrical industry continues to adjust the new ‘normal’ of life during lockdown, Bureau Veritas is keen to remind any homebound electricians on how they can use the extra time at home to their advantage by upskilling. Inherently, by the nature of electrical work which typically involves working in people’s homes or commercial, industrial and building sites, many of which may be temporarily closed, many electrical firms have had to either limit work or place it on hold altogether for the duration of the lockdown. In response, Bureau Veritas is keen to remind those electricians, duty holders and property managers who are homebound – either in working at home or having been furloughed for the present time – of the opportunity to use the extra time to invest in their own professional development. Michael Kenyon, Technical Lead at Bureau Veritas says, “While we eagerly await further details from the Government, our priority remains on helping support the electrical industry in whatever way we can. With this in mind, we are actively encouraging electricians and other industry professionals to make the most of the vast learning resources available to them. “From free training courses, webinars, podcasts and live Q&As, there is currently a plethora of great online content emerging due to the lockdown. Many industry experts are creating digital content, easily available on social media and other platforms, which has been designed to help those at home to enhance their knowledge base at this time. “At Bureau Veritas, we recently launched a new electrical guide designed to support duty holders in understanding how to reduce risks within an organisation – a great tool for electricians to have in their armoury when making compliance recommendations.”
Senior business manager and engineer, Gary Worrall (pictured), has become the new President of ECA. Over 30 years ago, Worrall became an engineer for Lorne Stewart Engineering, a prominent M&E business and longstanding ECA Member. He progressed through the business to become CEO of Lorne Stewart PLC’s engineering division, having held several senior management roles along the way. Worrall takes over the ECA Presidency from Jim Pridham, who played a key role during the past 12 months, most notably through his promotion of industry training and apprenticeships. Worrall comments, “As someone who is passionate about electrical and engineering services, I’m delighted to be taking over this prestigious ECA role as an industry advocate and leader. ELECTRICAL SAFETY GUIDANCE FOR LANDLORDS With the new Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector coming into force in England on July 1, NAPIT has published specific guidance for landlords online. The regulations coming into force are for new, specified tenancies, and private landlords will be required to ensure their properties are subject to electrical inspection and testing, carried out by a qualified, competent person at intervals not exceeding five years (and resulting in a satisfactory report). This will apply to all existing specified tenancies from April 1, 2021. Despite these challenging and uncertain times, the regulations will still be introduced as planned, with the Government issuing guidance making it clear that landlords are still responsible for providing safe homes during the pandemic. However, if they can show that they have taken all reasonable steps to comply with their duties under the regulations, they are not in breach of the duty if they cannot comply. Mike Andrews, CEO of NAPIT, comments, “As the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers, we see it as our duty to provide accurate, consistent and easy to understand guidance for landlords on these new regulations. Electrical safety is at the forefront of everything we do, and we have worked hard on this guidance to make it easy for landlords to understand their requirements. “We have also launched a dedicated online search facility on our website helping landlords search for competent and qualified tradespeople that they can trust to carry out their electrical inspections. “As well as this, we have created a new Landlord Electrical Installation Safety Record for our members to use, which provides a summary of the often-lengthy Electrical Installation Condition Report. INDUSTRY NEWS CORONAVIRUS SITE SAFETY GUIDES ISSUED Leading engineering services sector bodies, ECA and BESA, have jointly developed two new guides to help contractors manage coronavirus-related issues on site. The new guides are freely available to the wider industry during the current emergency. They provide sector-relevant guidance for engineering and building services contractors working across construction and FM in two specific areas: • ‘Specific Environments’ (where there may be higher risk of COVID-19 transmission); and • Close proximity working’ (less than 2m). The new guides: • Align with the hierarchy of preventative measures shown in the Construction Leadership Council Site Operating Procedures, based on guidance from Public Health England • Do not recommend the deployment of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for general site activities, most notably where social distancing is possible • Recommend that any decision to deploy RPE in site-specific situations should be based on risk assessment. The guides have been drawn up with the support of a COVID-19 expert panel made up of BESA and ECA safety practitioners. The panel is also helping ECA and BESA to provide informed, practical comments on site health and safety issues to the government and industry bodies who are generating overarching guidance in this area. Rebecca Crosland, BESA Health & Safety Advisor, says, “It is imperative that there is further guidance out there to help keep the industry safe. The health, wellbeing and safety of everyone on site must be a priority during the COVID-19 health crisis.
“Businesses must exercise their duty of care under legislation to ensure all workers are protected and ensure that any critical information related to their health and safety is communicated clearly and then implemented.” Paul Reeve, ECA’s CSR Director and a member of the CLC’s working group on site safety measures, adds, “The CLC SOP is an overarching industry document, but it refers to the need for sector guidance. These two guides are the start of joint ECA and BESA activity to produce more detailed, sector-relevant information that’s desperately needed by many engineering services contractors. “They aim to help with the practical management of coronavirus-related issues on site, which may include the challenges associated with doing essential work in closer proximity than two metres.” The guides are available on the ECA website. INFOGRAPHIC PROVIDES CLARITY ON ‘ESSENTIAL WORK’ A new infographic aims to provide greater clarity over essential work and help the public understand exactly what construction projects key workers can carry out. The infographic was developed by the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum after key workers reported being harassed and verbally abused during vital construction projects. Forum members reported an increasing number of tradespeople being intimidated and verbally abused by the public while carrying out legitimate projects in line with CICV Forum guidelines. Therefore, the graphic has been developed to show a checklist of projects to help the public understand the range of work classified as ‘essential’ by key workers. “Essential construction work is not confined to building a major hospital for COVID-19, but we know that people might not be aware of this”, comments John McKinney, secretary of Forum members, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, the Stone Federation and the Scottish Contractors Group. “Greater understanding is needed among the public to understand that the key workers carrying out such work aren’t flouting the rules – they are performing essential tasks and should be allowed to do so without fear of abuse.” The infographic can be viewed in full at the CICV Forum’s website. A NEW DESIGN SERVICE FOR CCTV AND FIRE SYSTEMS Already providing contractors with free security and fire training programmes, ESP is further enhancing its commitment to helping the sector with a newly launched, dedicated design service which will allow contractors access to a free of charge design facility that will cover CCTV systems and fire systems. Available to any size of business, from local electricians to national contracting companies, the aim is to provide expertise in choosing the right products and solutions to create a scheme that meets all the requirements and objectives of the project in question, and that is compliant with all the relevant regulations and standards. From an initial enquiry to discuss the requirements, the next stage will be one of information and measurements gathering. For larger and more complex design schemes, a visit to site will be carried out for a detailed survey. With all the relevant information gathered, including drawings and specifications, a suitable design proposal for a CCTV system or fire system will be created and supplied to the client along with a quotation. Two-way interaction between customer and the ESP design team throughout the process will be of paramount importance to ensure the design scheme meets all the necessary requirements. INDUSTRY NEWS PRIVA WELCOMES BUILDING RE-OCCUPTION GUIDANCE The publication of clear guidance from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) on the measures that must be taken prior to the re-occupation of buildings, will give building owners a clear roadmap for the months ahead, says Priva UK. As concerns and fear grow regarding the risks associated with the airborne transmission of the COVID-19 virus, CIBSE’s advice is “to increase ventilation as much as possible, increasing the flow of outside air and preventing any pockets of stagnant air. Recirculation of air within buildings should be avoided to reduce the risk of transmission”. CIBSE also warns that this increased demand for recirculation of air will, very likely, result in an increase in energy bills. Gavin Holvey, Sales Manager Priva UK & Ireland, believes that the building services industry will play a central role in helping businesses adapt to the ‘new normal’. He comments, “Right now, all of us, whether we are employers, building owners, building engineers or FMs, are desperately seeking clarity on how to make our buildings safe and fit for purpose. Strong leadership and guidance are needed, and these new publications from CIBSE are a vital starting point.” Priva shares CIBSE’s view that the pathway to making buildings safe for those returning to work requires specialist expertise. Holvey explains, “The role played by FMs and building engineers is often overlooked. But we must now understand that these people are critical to our economy. Without them and their specialist skills, we simply can’t get our built environment into a shape where people can feel safe in buildings.”
LIA CREATES ENDORSED LIGHTING PRODUCT SCHEME Due to increased scrutiny of emergency lighting and fire safety products, for the first time ever, the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) has created a new scheme to offer an opportunity for emergency lighting manufacturers to have their products individually endorsed by ICEL and the LIA. The ICEL Product Endorsement scheme recognises products which have been developed and manufactured in accordance with the relevant safety directive and standards. Therefore, it provides specifiers and end users with the confidence that the emergency lighting products they install have been scrutinised and have controlled manufacturing processes, with an independent verifiable assessment that the products have genuinely been subjected to these checks. Administered by the LIA compliance team, all approved products will be listed on the ICEL Product Endorsement Scheme register. These products will also be entitled to use a special mark to indicate the endorsement, and a strict process of annual audits will ensure products maintain their status. SELECT TO REFUND 30% OF 2020 MEMBERSHIP FEES Select is giving its members a significant discount on membership fees to help ease some of the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The trade association for electrical contractors in Scotland has informed its 1,246 members that they will be receiving a 30% discount on their 2020 subscription fees. Members who have already paid their subscription in full will receive a refund, while those who pay by direct debit will only have seven of their 10 instalments collected. Select President, Kevin Griffin, explains, “This financial support package is unprecedented, but we are living in unprecedented times and we believe this decision will offer some much-needed financial assistance to members. “Select’s Central Board is made up of working electrical professionals, all of whom are facing the same challenges as their fellow members. We therefore understand first-hand the issues our sector is experiencing and want to do everything we can to help each other. “Also, as a not-for-profit organisation, we are purely here to assist our members and put their needs first – so that’s exactly what we are doing.” The move is one of a number of emergency measures that Select has introduced to help members weather the pandemic. Others include online training, advice webinars and a dedicated COVID-19 hub, updated daily with the latest employment, financial and contractual information. The association is also playing a leading role in the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum, a collective of Scotland’s largest trade and professional bodies who are currently gathering intelligence, sharing advice and speaking directly with government on a variety of vital COVID-19 issues. GUIDANCE FOR ELECTRICAL WHOLESALE BRANCHES The Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) has published a guidance document – named COVID-19 & Social Distancing: Practical Guidance for Electrical Wholesale Branches – which covers every aspect of a typical branch structure giving ideas and advice on how to adapt processes whilst continuing to trade safely during the pandemic. Developed by the EDA and a group of expert wholesalers, the guidance is available to download through the Association’s specially created online Hub. Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, explains, “The safety of our members’ employees, customers and suppliers is vital, and this guidance provides practical suggestions and ideas that can be adapted for branch operations of all sizes and layouts. Our guidance does not replace companies’ existing health and safety procedures; rather, it is complementary. “At this stage in the pandemic, no one knows how long social distancing will be with us, but as a sector we need to plan ahead – and our guidance can help members develop safe yet responsive working practices.” The EDA’s guidance is based on Site Operating Procedures (SOP) produced by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC).

The social and financial effect that we are facing has left us in a surreal world and our whole way of life is changing. Through all of this, my heart goes out to all the families that have suffered excruciating losses and to those on furlough that may wonder whether there will be work for them in the future, as the UK battles to get business going again.

Titles had become irrelevant as we have all chipped in to make our operations functional.

CONTRACT NEWS ZUMTOBEL PROVIDES THE LIGHT FOR BDP Zumtobel Lighting has undertaken a turnkey project for the supply and installation of its Linetik luminaires at renowned architect BDP’s offices in London, together with project management and assistance with the commissioning. Zumtobel worked to the lighting designer’s brief, which required the retention of existing track, the addition of new track and installation of special variant Linetik pendant luminaires with neutral white uplight and slightly warmer downlight – so as to coordinate with the existing illumination strategy. Located in a converted brewery in the heart of Clerkenwell, BDP’s London office is its largest, with an interdisciplinary community of 350 architects, engineers, designers, and urbanists. The building also serves as a hub with flexible meeting, restaurant, event and exhibition spaces. Zumtobel developed a pendant variant of Linetik with a track-mounted control gear enclosure so it could be mounted to existing and new lengths of three-phase universal track. Linetik has an extremely minimal form with advanced LED optics and integrated sensors, making it an innovative workplace luminaire with impressive visual comfort. Linetik has a discreet form that uses unique lighting technology to deliver direct/indirect illumination for maximum effect. The uplight and downlight components were customised for this job at 4000K and 3500K respectively. This high-performance design with a luminous flux of around 6,000 lumens ensures that light is distributed evenly across shared workplaces. With EN12464 compliant
luminance distribution, this lighting solution features strong anti-glare characteristics. With 60% of the light output being indirect, a comfortable and stimulating room brightness distribution is achieved. DC String technology by Tridonic has also been used on the installation and allows power and data to be transferred through the cable, along with separate control of the direct and indirect components. FIRE SAFETY PROTECTION FOR NOTTINGHAM STUDENTS Nittan Europe, a UK manufacturer of conventional and addressable fire detection products and systems, has had its Evolution analogue addressable fire detection system installed into a new student accommodation development in Beeston, Nottingham. The system was installed by Nottinghamshire based integrated safety and security solutions provider, TIS. Dagfa House is a unique development of townhouses, clusters and studios adjacent to The University of Nottingham campus, providing accommodation to 229 students along with a range of leisure and study amenities. At the heart of the development is a Grade II listed building that dates back to the 18th century and was converted into a school in 1948. This latest development has been undertaken by the Cassidy Group. One of the key fire safety challenges posed by the Dagfa House development was the mix of accommodation blocks, with some being relatively small. A cost-effective fire detection system was required that could potentially evacuate each site in the event of a fire and that would also be future proof, with spares readily available. A Nittan Evolution analogue addressable fire alarm system, comprising two individually networked systems – each utilising eight Evolution1 panels and Nittan devices – was chosen as the solution. Evolution is Nittan’s advanced, premium fire system. It uses ASIC technology in the sensors and sophisticated detection algorithms, combining extremely reliable fire detection together with a very high degree of protection against unwanted false alarms. Its advanced, highly flexible protocol allows for substantial amounts of information to be transmitted at high speed and is not affected by the number of devices on the loop. LIGHTING AND SAFETY SOLUTIONS FOR CASTLE ROCK PROJECT Originally constructed as two separate residential properties, numbers 1 and 2 Craigmillar Castle Road in Edinburgh were later converted into a GP surgery and operated as such for many years. With the premises now back in the ownership of Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association, work has been carried out to turn the former surgery into new commercial premises, and products from ESP and Ovia have being installed to provide lighting, emergency lighting and fire safety solutions. The starting point was to replace the two existing fuse boxes with a new one to serve the entire building. A full lighting upgrade was also required to ensure the premises met with the various legislative requirements and a new fire protection system was installed. ESP’s MagDuo two-wire fire alarm system was selected as it offered a highly flexible and adaptable system that saved valuable time and money on the installation process. Unlike standard conventional four-wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, MagDuo utilises intelligent two-wire technology, which allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material costs. The products used were the MagDuo 4-Zone Fire Panel along with heat and smoke detectors and manual call points. Lighting products from ESP’s Duceri emergency lighting range have also been installed, including LED 2W maintained exit sign legends and LED 3W maintained emergency signs. When it came to choosing general lighting solutions to cover smaller rooms, corridors and storage areas, the Ovia Inceptor EVO LED bulkheads were chosen – with the emergency variant being utilised on escape routes and corridors.

TRAINING MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING SESSIONS MOVE ONLINE The Electrical Industries Charity has launched new mental health virtual training courses. The charity has recently provided Mental Health Awareness training courses to organisations throughout the UK, and although it cannot currently offer these courses in person, the charity launched a new virtual service for members of the electrical and energy sector. The virtual training sessions offer attendees a space to reconnect and engage with key areas affecting our mental health, and they are also designed to help people tackle the new daily challenges resulting from COVID-19. The courses can be taken from anywhere with an internet connection and alongside the longstanding introductory course to raise awareness for mental health, The Electrical Industries Charity has launched four tailored courses. The available sessions are as follows: The courses are provided through secure portals, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, for a maximum of six participants per session. In these sessions, attendees will get the opportunity to talk openly and frankly with a qualified trainer, as well as access to resources provided by the charity.

LUTRON LAUNCHES ‘LEARN FROM HOME’ INITIATIVE
APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION CANCELLED
Lutron Electronics, the lighting control specialist, has launched a series of free, interactive online training resources. Over 300 courses and videos on lighting control fundamentals, shades and fixtures are now available through Lutron’s Lighting Control Institute. The training series aims to help upskill electrical contractors and wholesalers, as well as AV installers, by focusing on specific applications across residential and commercial sites. With lockdowns in place across the world, electricians and AV installers face an extended period of reduced activity. Lutron is investing in these professions, providing a range of tailored opportunities to learn about developments in lighting control technology and the wider industry. The Lutron ‘Learn from home’ portfolio of online training includes foundation courses, such as ‘Fundamentals of Lighting’ and ‘Introduction to Lighting Control’, delivered by industry experts from the company. The fully digital programme also includes multiple live events and on-demand contents spanning all aspects of Lutron’s residential, commercial, hospitality and shading applications. NICEIC and Elecsa have confirmed that the grand final of the 2020 Apprentice of The Year competition has been cancelled. The move comes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been taken in conjunction with event partners, including Scolmore Group, to ensure the health and safety of all concerned. Darren Staniforth, Senior Technical Presenter, NICEIC & ELECSA, explains, “It is with deep regret that we have decided to halt this year’s Apprentice of the Year Competition. Although it is without doubt the right thing to do given the current COVID-19 pandemic, we recognise the amount of work each apprentice has put into the process thus far and how disappointing this decision will be. “The competition has been running for five years and is an important activity in our calendar; it underlines our commitment to unearthing homegrown talent and instilling technical excellence at the heart of our industry. “2020 was shaping up to be our best year yet, with a high number of applicants demonstrating an exceptional level of competence. Its new campaign – ‘You’re our heroes of today, help us train the heroes of tomorrow’ – recognises the pivotal role electricians and plumbing and heating engineers play in keeping people safe and warm whilst the nation stays at home. Liam Sammon (pictured), Director of Develop Training at JTL, says, “The work of trade professionals is not only essential but is making a positive difference at this difficult time. From offering NHS workers free emergency repairs to raising money while self-quarantining – they are in fact heroes, whether they consider themselves one or not. “A shining example of this is the 400 joiners, plumbers, engineers, electricians and military personnel who have built the NHS Nightingale Hospital in Birmingham. A CREATIVE LIGHTING MISSION ECN investigates why products from Zano Controls were ideal for a bespoke lighting system at a private house in Cheltenham.
N
ew build projects can sometimes be a daunting prospect for contractors, especially when the property has a large design and a layout that requires complex electrical systems. When Dan Roberts of Roberts & Sons was tasked with designing a bespoke lighting system for a private house in Cheltenham, he could have easily had his work cut out for him. With 17 rooms in the property, comprised of five large bedrooms, five bathrooms and an open plan living style that spanned the communal areas of the property, designing a lighting system to fulfil customer expectations was by no means a simple task. However, with a customer open to suggestion and only a very skeletal idea of what they wanted, it presented the perfect opportunity for Dan to put his skills and product knowledge to the test. The homeowner had a dreamlike idea of what he wanted from the finished results, but he didn’t know exactly what he wanted from the onset of the project. As a result, the homeowner was happy to leave the lighting design to Dan. By combining previous experience with a little bit of additional Googling, he was able to design and create a lighting solution for the new build property that ticked all the boxes in terms of quality, practicality and longevity.

When it came to planning the project, Dan was in his element. With free reign over the lighting design, the only request his customer (the homeowner) had within the initial stages was that they wanted the final aesthetic of the lighting system to have retractive switching – rotary lighting control at this point was a no-go. Having used Zano products before, Dan knew from the outset that in order to provide retractive switching for his customer, he would need the ZBARLED remote dimming pack. As it turned out, Dan was able to upsell the ZBARLED to his customer, as he knew that the product was ideal for multi-point dimming control. With 28 circuits spanning the entire house, to provide retractive switching Dan knew he needed 28 ZBARLEDs. He decided that 26 of these could be the 0-300W/VA version due to the size of the room,
but in two instances (specifically the open plan hallway and kitchen), the ZBARLED1000 would be required. Choosing the Aurora range of Trimless downlights at 8.5W each – a downlight that Dan knew worked well with the Zano range of products – he had eight downlights per circuit, and a total of 23 in the kitchen for the ceiling lighting. In addition, spanning the entire ground floor of the property, across the open plan rooms and the two open landings, were a variety of decorative wall LEDs and fittings that were for everyday use and required dimming capability. Low level lighting was crucial for this property, as mood lighting was imperative to the finished result.
Where to install the remote dimming packs? Within the property was a plant room that housed the audio visual and internet racks, and one of the property’s many fuse boards. This room in question had enough space to fit the majority of the Zano ZBARLED remote dimming packs, and would make an ideal place to install them as it would provide the homeowner clear and labelled insight into what ZBARLED remote dimming pack controlled each circuit within the property. Any future additions to the lighting within the property would also be easy to undertake, as Dan ensured each ZBARLED was clearly labelled within the plant room to specify which room/circuit of lighting was being controlled. The upstairs floors had a separate fuse board housed in a different location to the downstairs, so for ease of wiring and functionality, the additional ZBARLEDs were installed there.
Noise interference Following the installation of the 28 ZBARLEDs, Dan encountered issues with the powering up of the ZBAR, which would falter and cut out. He contacted Zano’s technical team to talk through the issue, explaining that there were at least three circuits within each room. With the assistance of the Zano technical team’s help, Dan uncovered that the issue stemmed from the longer runs of the cable which produced a voltage noise on the circuit and caused interference. A simple fix presented itself in terms of a noise suppressor that Zano provided at no extra cost. The smart and creative lighting design that fed back to the plant room and fuse board cupboard meant that Dan did not have to delay the project’s completion by removing the switch plates in

In addition, the customer wanted to be able to set the lights to a low level and not have to keep adjusting the lighting level every time the lights were turned on – and Dan’s solution worked perfectly for this. He was able to set the minimum and maximum light levels of the LED circuits when he installed the ZBARLED remote dimming packs and this was key to customer satisfaction. What’s more, the fact that the downstairs, open plan wall lighting design used a total of six different LED types across different wattages and brands – and that they could all be controlled by one switch to create the desired mood lighting – was the perfect outcome. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FACE MASK Procuring suitable, compliant and fit for purpose face masks has become hugely relevant and critical as the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved worldwide. Jason Covell, Senior Product Manager of Deta, looks at the considerations.

n recent times, never has demand been greater for urgent supply of face masks to those that most need them; this includes key workers who continue to maintain essential services in the construction and manufacturing industries and/or those needing to protect themselves in situations where guidelines on social distancing are difficult to achieve. One of the most common forms of protection against this respiratory virus is a face mask or covering. It is important, however, that any face mask or covering protects the wearer appropriately and avoids a false sense of unbreakable protection against the COVID-19 virus. Recognising the different types of face masks available as well as the varying specification, performance and recommended application for these is of particular importance.
Protective masks (to EN 149:2001+A1:2009) A protective mask, otherwise known as a respirator or filtering face piece (FFP), is designed to protect the wearer from exposure to airborne contaminants (e.g. from inhaling infectious agents associated with inhaling small and large particle droplets) and is classified as PPE. Protective masks are designed for either single use, in which case they are marked ‘NR’ (non-reusable); or for multiple use, in which case they are marked ‘R’ (reusable). FFP2/FFP3 masks are PPE category III according to the Regulation (EU) 2016/425. This means that the conformity assessment includes a type examination by a notified body, resulting in an ‘EU type-examination certificate’, as well as production follow-up by a notified body. This enables the mask to be CE marked with the number of the notified body responsible for the production follow-up printed next to the CE marking. With the outbreak of COVID-19, the EU has implemented Regulation (EU) 2020/403 which states that as long as masks have met the essential health and safety requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and have been assessed in line with the regulatory easements in (EU) 2020/403, they can be placed on the market without completing a formal conformity assessment procedure by a Notified Body. Accordingly, in order to demonstrate compliance, a manufacturer must have submitted a formal application to a Notified Body and have been accepted into their

Community masks A community mask, otherwise known as an everyday / DIY mask, is neither a PPE mask nor a medical mask for which there are no European standards or testing requirements. These masks can under no circumstances replace respiratory protective equipment in the workplace, nor can they replace medical masks in healthcare settings or be used by healthcare professionals. Community masks include various forms of self-made or commercial masks or face covers made of cloth, other textiles or other materials such as paper.

Guidance from the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) confirms this in respect of masks for use outside of the healthcare sector, i.e. by the general public. It should be noted that this is an evolving situation and that Government guidance may be subject to revision.
Medical masks (to EN 14683:2019+AC:2019) A medical face mask, also known as surgical mask, is a medical device covering the mouth, nose and chin ensuring a barrier that limits the transition of an infective agent. They are used to prevent large respiratory droplets and splashes from reaching the mouth and the nose of the wearer and help reduce and/or control at the source the spread of large respiratory droplets from the person wearing the face mask. Medical masks comply with requirements as defined in European Standard EN 14683:2019 and should be CE marked. There are two main types:

Appropriate use of face masks is important Protective masks and medical masks should completely cover the face from the bridge of the nose down to the chin. Hands should be cleaned with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitiser before putting on and after taking off the mask. When taking off the mask, remove it from behind and avoid touching the front side. If the mask is disposable, dispose of the mask safely and wash your hands or apply alcohol-based hand sanitiser immediately after removing the mask. Whilst the current all-time high demand for masks during these unprecedented times continues to place significant pressure on supply chains, the importance of procuring suitable, compliant and fit for purpose masks must not be compromised. Dimming LEDs – problem solved Since the rapid rise of LED lighting, one of the biggest challenges the industry has faced is reliable dimming capability. Flickering lights and minimal light level control are frustrations many of us have encountered when dimming LEDs. This presented a challenge when designing our LED dimmer module, mainly due to the fact that there is no standardisation of LED drivers controlling light output; every manufacturer’s light fitting or lamp can react in a completely different way when dimmed. To prevent the common problems when dimming LED lighting, here at Niglon we have developed a dimmer with not just two, but three dimming modes to ensure maximum compatibility. Our easy to follow installation guide demonstrates a quick three step process, allowing the selection of one of the three modes, to decide which will work most effectively with the LED lighting. Although the dimmer offers both trailing edge and leading edge functionality, it is generally found that the use of a trailing edge technology works more effectively with LED lights. To increase ‘out of the box’ compatibility and reduce installation time, the Niglon dimmer is factory programmed in the first of two available trailing edge dimming modes. In addition to the three modes, the Niglon dimmer also allows the setting of the minimum brightness level to prevent flickering at the bottom end of the dimming range. To enable the LED dimmer to be incorporated into both white moulded and decorative wiring accessories ranges, we now offer a range of unfurnished one-tofour- gang face plates.

Due to the ever increasing popularity of USB-C type connection within laptops, tablets and PC’s, the Median range now offers you the flexibility to provide the end user with a USB charging connection suitable for all their needs. I
nfection control is one of the biggest challenges facing the healthcare sector. Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are infections that occur in a healthcare setting that a patient didn’t have before they came in. These infections can develop either as a direct result of healthcare intervention (such as medical or surgical treatment) or from being in contact with a healthcare setting. They arise across a wide range of clinical conditions and can affect people of all ages. They can exacerbate existing or underlying conditions, delay recovery and adversely affect quality of life. A number of factors can increase the risk of acquiring an infection, but high standards of infection prevention and control practice, including providing clean environments, can minimise the risk.
Patient safety It is estimated that 300,000 patients a year in England acquire a healthcare associated infection as a result of care within the NHS, with respiratory infections the most common types of healthcare-associated infection. Each infection means additional use of NHS resources, greater patient discomfort and a decrease in patient safety. The question for our industry is what are the issues and requirements surrounding the supply and installation of electrical equipment? Anyone operating within and supplying to this sector is required to work with products that meet the demands for hygiene and safety, and that includes electrical products. Switch plates, such as light switches, dimmers and sockets have one of the highest touch rates in any environment,
so are likely to hold a significant number of microbes on their surfaces. Whilst regular and rigorous cleaning of these settings is essential, the use of products with antimicrobial properties will also have a part to play to help inhibit the spread of infection.

Health Technical Memorandum requirements When it comes to specification requirements within the healthcare sector, most are taken from Health Technical Memorandum (HTM’s). These give comprehensive advice and guidance on the design, installation and operation of specialised building and engineering technology used in the delivery of healthcare. The focus of Health Technical Memorandum guidance remains on healthcare-specific elements of standards, policies and up-to-date established best practice. They are applicable to new and existing sites, and are for use at various stages during the whole building lifecycle. Healthcare-specific technical engineering guidance is a vital tool in the safe and efficient operation of healthcare facilities. Health Technical Memorandum guidance is the main source of specific healthcare-related guidance for estates and facilities professionals. For contractors and installers working within a healthcare setting, they will seek the reassurance from manufacturers that the products they are specifying and installing meet the required standards and that they are able to supply the test certificates to prove it.
Wiring accessories with antimicrobial additives Scolmore’s antimicrobial wiring accessories – Mode, Mode Part M and Polar – are all manufactured using urea formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. The standard used to qualify Scolmore’s products is ISO 22196. The standard ISO 22916 test method is designed to test the ability of plastics and other similar materials to kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms, over a 24-hour period of contact. ISO 22196 is one of the most commonly requested antimicrobial surface test methods for evaluating the antimicrobial activity of antibacterial treated plastic products.

4. Plan for safe working and social distancing
uring these everchanging and uncertain times, it can be good to review what you are currently doing to see if there are any changes you can make to improve the way you work moving forwards. No one was expected to have a plan for COVID-19, but we have put together some tips to help you and your business act now, to support you in life after lockdown.
1. Learn something new If business is a bit slower than usual or you are on furlough and find yourself with a bit more time on your hands, then it could be the perfect opportunity to undertake some free online training. The rise in working from home has led us all to flock to online platforms, and therefore, increasing your knowledge in these digital areas could be key to becoming aware of digital opportunities for your business. The Google Digital Garage is a great starting point for those of you wishing to get started on building your digital marketing knowledge. There are currently 126 free courses on there, covering a wide variety of skill sets and knowledge levels. Another way to learn something new or to gain a new perspective could be to join a few webinars on topics that are relevant to you; there are so many being advertised on social platforms and if you join and don’t think it’s quite appropriate, you can always leave – unlike face-to-face meetings where that would be considered rude!
2. Be more social Human connection is more important now than it ever was, with workforces working remotely and the majority of businesses working from home. We have all turned to social media as a means of keeping informed, entertained and most importantly, connected. If your customers are turning to social platforms for the aforementioned, then now is the ideal time to talk to them. If you are working, let them know, and explain how you will operate under the new social distancing guidelines to help to put their minds at ease. The first thing you could look at is which platforms you are active on. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram would be

great places to start, to engage with your current followers and encourage others to also follow you to keep up to date. The next thing may be to explore how often you are able to communicate with them and what you are going to say. There are a number of free social media scheduling tools, such as Hootsuite and Tweet Deck, where you can schedule social posts ahead of time, across a number of platforms. Finally, the best thing about social media is that organic posting is free. You can just start a conversation with your customers and connections and let it grow from there.
3. Review business processes If your business is anything like ours, then the pandemic and lockdown will have taught you a few things about both yourself and your company. Now is the time to review those learnings and see if there are any positive changes you can make. Perhaps there are internal processes that are long-winded and involve paper exchange, which could be digitised to save time and also save the planet. Perhaps communication procedures and channels have changed and maybe moving towards using more modern channels such as WhatsApp and Zoom could be a positive thing, breaking down barriers and helping everyone to have their say. Whatever the changes you have noticed, it would be wise to review these and take forward the changes that have brought about the most value and embed them into your business.

The world we live and work in has changed and it is unlikely that we will go back to ‘normal’ for some time. It is probably more likely that we will all adjust to a new type of normal where things like social distancing and working from home become the done thing. If you are an electrical contractor who visits customers on-site or in their own homes, you will need to think about how you protect both yourself and your customers. Some of the things to consider may be the wearing of masks, gloves and glasses, along with maintaining social distancing whilst carrying out work. How you plan to carry on working safely is something that would be worth communicating with your customers, perhaps via a customer email or on social channels. The key message for us all is to instil confidence in our customers that we are still safe to do business with.
5. Think about the future It is possible that during lockdown, the number of places that you were able to source your electrical products has decreased. Electrical wholesalers, overall, maintained a good level of business and were able to service their customers, but you may have found that some were more accommodating than others. Now would be a good time to think about the wholesalers you work with and the levels of customer service that they provide to you. Maybe you found that deliveries rather than collections became more important, and perhaps you need a wholesale partner which is more flexible and responsive. As we move towards the lifting of lockdown, it is possible that the relationship between contractors and wholesalers may have evolved. The contractors are demanding more of their wholesaler, and the wholesalers are having to think outside the box and about how they can support their customers 24/7 in the future, exploring options such as better online facilities and updated opening hours. The wholesalers and the customers both have a responsibility to trade safely, and the wholesaler will have to provide reassurance to its customers that they are the safest wholesaler to do business with. Geographically, there has been an increase of 36% in charging locations, further reducing the all-important impact of range anxiety on EV purchasing decisions. Rapid charging points have seen a significant boost with an increase of 9% in the first few months of 2020, reflecting the demand for increased range levels within newer EV models. Sales may now be idling due to the pandemic, but charging infrastructure demand continues as the UK reopens and drivers return to the roads. Despite the lockdown, a level of need remained across the charging network as transport requirements continued for key workers.

EV charging points at home or work are very convenient, and enable drivers to fully re-charge their car before setting out on a journey
HOME IS WHERE THE CHARGE IS As road users begin to adjust along the ‘Road to Zero’, electricians should be ready to support end-users on this journey as the requirement for safe and convenient EV charging also increases. Dave Enefer of Electrium explains.
W
ith a growing proportion of vehicles on the UK’s roads now powered by electricity, with record numbers of new electric car registrations last year, there is a growing need for the country’s infrastructure to support this shift. In fact, EV car charging is becoming a common part of electrical installations – a trend which shows no signs of slowing as the Government encourages more drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles. As part of the Government’s plans to reduce emissions, the demand for this type of electrical installation will only increase. This plan includes the sale of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars by 2035 (recently brought forward from 2040); the release of its paper Decarbonising Transport: Setting The Challenge, which is calling for respondents to the debate; and the publication of a full transport decarbonisation plan, which is expected to be released in November. In the face of such demand – from endusers, homeowners and businesses alike – the challenge for installers is in installing electric car charging points safely and inline with regulations. So, it is encouraging to see the industry respond with the first amendment to the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, which has been published with the inclusion of a new update on EV charging installations. Unlike previous iterations, this update comes into place immediately, and will form part of a consolidated version of BS 7671. As part of the updated Wiring Regulations, Section 722 now includes the use of technology which was not included in

the previous publication, BS 7671:2018, which according to the IET enables a more practical solution for the installation of charging points. The updated Section 722 is intended to make installing charging points quicker and easier and will reduce the cost of installations for both installers and consumers.
Greater levels of protection
Safe and reliable installations One of the main attractions to EV charging points at home or work is the convenience this offers road users, enabling them to fully re-charge their car before setting out on a journey. To achieve this convenience, different charging facilities can offer faster charging speeds, built-in safety features, and even back-up charging functions. Many EV chargers also feature intelligent smart charging, enabling them to charge an EV at times of off-peak tariffs and even monitor the charge remotely, allowing users to check progress, adjust settings, or switch the charger on or off without being present. But while the charging unit itself may have been designed with user safety and convenience in mind, it is important to consider how this additional electrical unit interacts with a property’s existing electrical infrastructure. To ensure correct, safe and reliable installation, EV charging points must be installed by a professional who can ensure that the unit can be accommodated without overwhelming the main household supply. A professional installer can also check that there are adequate safety cut-outs in the circuit. Without such safety features, any significant electrical component which draws additional current has the potential to cause damage, disruption to electrical service, or even electrical fires.

To install an EV car charger, it is important to have the correct circuit protection in place. Using a Type A RCD device can help towards meeting this new amendment (depending on the charger type) and for those who have Crabtree Starbreaker consumer units, a Crabtree miniature RCBO with switched neutral could be used. However, there are a variety of chargers, and selecting the right type of RCD is essential. Therefore, it is important for the installer to refer to section 722 of the Wiring Regulations and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions when designing the installation. The Crabtree miniature RCBO devices, for anyone unfamiliar, measure one single module wide, and are just 90mm in height. he UK transport sector contributes more to carbon emissions than any other. It’s therefore no surprise that the government is encouraging more people to switch to electric vehicles (EVs). In February, the UK

government brought forward its ban on new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2040 to 2035, paving the way for greater adoption of hybrids and EVs that run on cleaner energy. However, it is not that simple – the EV transition strategy lacks a few crucial pieces. Deloitte has estimated that the global EV market will reach a tipping point by 2022, when the cost of ownership of
an electric vehicle will be on par with the internal combustion engine (ICE). Unfortunately, it could also result in a supply gap of almost 14 million EVs in 2030, undermining government efforts. The aim is clear – moving toward the electrification of the private and public road transport sectors. However, there’s still a long way to go and many things to consider.

Complexities of a national charging infrastructure In January 2020, a new Ipsos Global study revealed that consumers ranked the location and availability of charging stations as one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. To address this, the Conservative government made a £500m election commitment to expand the ‘fast-charging network’. This could lead to a substantial improvement from the 15,500 chargers / 26,500 plugs which are present, according to Zapmap. However, compare that to the 8,400 fuel stations and 68,000 pumps currently in the UK, and we have a better understanding of the current situation. If we accept that the number of charging stations has to increase, and that the government is reacting, we must consider their location. Choosing the best sites are complex due to competing factors such as local grid constraints and EV ownership density. Unlike traditional refilling at petrol stations, it’s not a onesize-fits-all system. The type of charge point best suited to each location will depend on the profile of each area and the driving habits of EV users within it. The wide range of charging speeds, and potentially long recharge times, means EV charging infrastructure needs to fit alongside existing driving behaviours and activities. If, for example, the majority of EV drivers prefer to charge up their vehicles while they do Saturday’s shopping in a particular district, then that is vital data for charge point locations.

Charge points as data goldmines Operational data on charging – such as time of day, charge duration, the amount of power delivered and what type of connector was used – is now collected in conjunction with commercial data related to payment methods and transaction amounts. In addition, modern EVs are far more digitally enabled than traditional vehicles, constantly recording high volumes of additional spatial data during the day. Taking into account all the different variables makes it a delicate balancing act to decide what the demands are for drivers – whether visiting any given neighbourhood supermarket or central business district car park now or in the future. That’s where the power of geospatial data will help. This can highlight unique usage patterns in specific areas and shed light on which is the best route to take when it comes to EV infrastructure investment. Once you have a clear picture of charging use and behaviour in a particular location, you can remove a lot of the guesswork from charging infrastructure decisions.

The ‘overpowered’ elephant in the room We are in the energy age, and every nation is looking to fill the void left by fossil fuels and make efficient, future-proof decisions. As EVs become more widespread, electrical demand will grow and, on current estimations, outstrip the capacity of local power grids. This in turn will force EV charging networks to compete with each other in infrastructure projects for electricity. There is also concern over electrifying public transport. UK buses and trains are due a complete overhaul, purely from an efficiency standpoint. Factor in electrification, and the public transport network needs huge and ongoing investment if it is to meet modern and future demands. The UK government has set bold and welcome plans for EVs. It is the first step

in making the UK transport industry fit for purpose. However, simply banning or phasing out old, inefficient vehicles and expecting private companies to develop new technology to fill the void will not suffice. We need to make decisions that will benefit us, not just for the here and now, but for the unforeseeable future. Building charging points is to be lauded, but what happens if the technology is made redundant, or if public habits change? Instead, the government must look to invest in data, creating a holistic transport hub to understand activity and trends in the industry. Only then can we make informed, real-time decisions and ensure the national move to electrification is moving forward in the most efficient and flexible way possible.

Schneider Electric has committed to launch a Green Fleet policy which aims to replace 100% of its car fleet with electric vehicles by 2030
ncouraging more people to adopt electric vehicles (for both personal, public and business transport) is at the heart of the government’s efforts to tackle climate change. That is because transport accounts for 23% of the UK’s CO2 emissions, according to calculations by the Committee on Climate Change. Public support for electric vehicles is high, with a recent survey finding that 87% of Brits said they “would” or “definitely would” buy an electric vehicle. But at the same time, Brits cited their top three reasons for not buying one were: lack of charging points, expense, and anxiety about getting out of range. It’s clear then, that in a strategy to meet the 2035 ban on internal combustion engine vehicle sales by moving to electric transport, end users need to be reassured that using electric vehicles will be as convenient and cost effective as their polluting diesel or petrol predecessors. The integration of more low carbon energy and an improved electrical infrastructure to deliver it when and where it’s needed must all go hand in hand.
How big is the challenge?

The UK government has stated that we will need 10 million cars on the road in ten years’ time to achieve our carbon neutral goal; today, there are only some 265,000 EVs in the UK. Although the percentage of newly registered cars represented by EVs is growing, with our current approach we are not on track to achieve this target. However, electric transport adoption spans more than just personal consumer use – businesses are beginning to do their part too. For example, The Climate Group has signed up 67 companies to its EV100 Initiative, in which companies including Schneider Electric have committed to launch a Green Fleet policy which aims to replace 100% of its car fleet with electric vehicles by 2030. This has introduced the need for multiple EV chargers to be installed at private commercial facilities, as well as in public spaces such as motorway services and public car parks. Commuter transport is also seeing an overhaul, with numerous projects in cities like Glasgow to move to all-electric buses. With this boom in the e-mobility sector being powered by electricity, we need to turn our attention to the potential strain EV adoption could put on the UK’s power infrastructure. Utilities stakeholders need to decide how to invest in upgrading the electrical network (especially distribution) without creating upward pressure on the cost of electricity for consumers and businesses – which may weaken the appetite for EV charging.
The challenge of legacy infrastructure As the adoption of EVs gains pace, the UK will require a significant increase in grid capacity in order to solve challenges such as demand at peak times. However, it is expected that the impact on overall energy demand should be less dramatic. In order to target investment in EVs where it will be most effective and when it will be needed, utilities must create a model to assess the needs of new infrastructure.

A key element to this is better understanding how, when, and where consumers will want to charge up – as well as other environmental factors that might impact this behaviour. By understanding what the demand profile might look like at off-peak, mid-peak and peak, it will be possible to identify where efficiencies can be made. For example, if customers embrace a smart charging model, up to 70% efficiency could be gained and reduce the amount of investment required in higher voltage. Another key element will be geography – with some charging locations and their supporting infrastructure requiring more network capacity headroom than elsewhere. At the more local level, this will mean assessing and expanding the capabilities of substations to feed data back to stakeholders in the energy supply chain, so that load can be managed effectively.
How utilities can support EV adoption There are a number of improvements to our electrical infrastructure which utilities can begin work on. Namely, to begin investing and deploying technologies that will give their operations the agility and resilience now. This will pave the way for a smooth and steady transition, reducing any bumps in the road that could be caused by a sudden demand for additional infrastructure projects. With this approach, energy distribution stakeholders will be able to shape the future of EV charging, by participating in the development of a smart connected grid which can support new mechanisms such as off-peak retail tariffs. This should ease the pressure to scale infrastructure and capacity to provide consumers with an affordable, reliable and convenient supply of energy as new electric vehicles are connected to the grid. “ WE ALL NEED TO BE IN THIS TOGETHER” Paul Foulkes, President of the KNX UK Association, describes how COVID-19 is presenting new energy challenges in homes and workplaces, and looks at the potential solutions.
S
marter technology for buildings has been taking massive leaps forward, but all too often, the solutions still seem to be a bit piecemeal. Heating, ventilation, lighting, security, audio-visual and entertainment – wouldn’t it be great to be able to control them all together, so they can work intelligently and more efficiently together? How much more control would that give homeowners over their energy budgets? How much easier would optimising energy consumption for post-pandemic working patterns be? At the same time, we talk about reducing energy demand via active and passive means, including smart grids and local energy production. It is generally accepted, I think, that buildings will eventually need to be a part of the wider local energy supply and demand infrastructure. That will make best use of all sources of energy and is able, for instance, to cater for the high demand that fast-charging EVs will place on it.
Taking back control We must stop talking about this ‘brave new world’ and we must start living it, but for now, most buildings are still treated in ringfenced isolation. That means that controls are still generally the main weapon in the architects and M&E contractors’ toolboxes. Yet too often, controls still mean disparate
systems that cannot talk to each other, and multiple pieces of software or apps that you need to understand in order to interact with your installations. This is, in part, due to the way we design our buildings and the supporting infrastructure. Often, the only link between architects, interior designers, M&E consultants, building contractors etc. are such things as ‘design briefs’ or a set of plans, or even simply verbal instructions passed down a chain of command. They rarely meet, yet logic dictates that they all should have a role to play at all stages of a project. This includes planning and design, through the installation/build process and on to occupation and management of the building.
COVID-19 implications Post-pandemic, we face a number of challenges as we integrate new thinking on social distancing into our transport planning and working practices. Perhaps one positive outcome is that we are refocussed on the needs of the people using the space, and how their occupancy and use of it will change over time. After all, how many houses were kitted out with the expectation of working from home and all-day occupancy? How many offices were conceived with the idea of minimising density and having to manage so much empty space energy-efficiently? Getting the necessary infrastructure in place requires effort and a level of

innovative thinking, but the first steps fall to us – the people involved in designing control for the building stock. Only if we demand that builders, architects, designers and engineers build in really smart control now, will we ever be able to take that big leap forward. By designing in flexible, smart control now, we are future-proofing buildings in preparation for when the regulations catch up with those willing to innovate and strive for better buildings.
What can we do now? Meeting the challenges of energy use within the home, for instance, simply must go beyond installing wireless gadgets. Despite appearances, I have to doubt that the recognised big technology players in this market have a business strategy that is focused on saving energy. Their products are designed to be replaced quickly; they want you to upgrade your hardware every 24 months because they will be following the same business strategy that they employ for mobile phones. This is not sustainable. When planning and building apartments, it is perfectly normal to include a BMS (Building Management System) which allows for non-invasive monitoring without compromising residents’ privacy. Yet, when we plan, design and build housing estates, a BMS or facility management and integrated infrastructure is generally completely omitted. That must surely change as developers, be they commercial, housing authorities, local authorities etc, become aware of the advantages of installing a suitable future-proof, robust, effective and proven infrastructure – and not just filling houses with smart gadgets that may have to be replaced in 24 months. The need for a robust, tested and accepted infrastructure system is essential. There are a number of options, but the one that truly meets all the requirements is KNX. KNX offers a non-proprietary installation with multiple manufacturer options, the ability to work with other systems – from local RF such as EnOcean to large-scale BMS such as Trend – and is scalable from individual housing to large-scale commercial and industrial. It’s futureproof and flexible and, if I was specifying control for any building now, I’d choose KNX. The rest of the world will catch up soon, and the customer will thank you when the find they are ready to ‘plug in’ to all the advantages of a local smart grid. KNX UK, knxuk.org

Where do you need light, where do you need detection, and where do you need both?
When it comes to installing security lights, slave floodlights could make perfect sense – and they may provide substantial costs savings too. Peter Staniforth, Technical Manager at Timeguard, takes a closer look.

nce upon a time, installing an automatic security PIR light was straightforward. There wasn’t much to choose between them on functionality, and all you had to do was choose the brand you trusted, take it out of the box, and wire it up. It could be quite a cumbersome task though – juggling drills and screwdrivers while up a ladder and getting the set-up right wasn’t for the faint hearted. As time went on, there were refinements to avoid nuisance switching and eliminate blind spots, with options to pan, tilt and partially mask detectors, and 180-degree detections zones becoming commonplace. Controls improved too, with more precise control to avoid daytime switching and determine how long lights remain on. Lightweight polycarbonate came as a big blessing for installers, as did units with all the wiring on a wall plate, with the floodlight clipped on at the last minute. At Timeguard, we upped the ante even further with bigger terminals, replaceable knockouts, and flange shapes that hold wires more securely, while still focusing on the most installer-friendly thing of all: the reliability that means every job is a good one. All these refinements have been much appreciated by the trade, it seems, but how many of you actually make use of the extra terminal for easy loop outs better models provide?

An opportunity for substantial savings Master-slave set-ups make perfect sense when lighting and protecting larger or irregularly shaped areas, especially when the looping out is made easy. A slave floodlight is typically 30-40% cheaper at the trade counter than an equivalent-quality master with a PIR or photocell switch, so you can soon start to see the benefits even with a single-slave set up. Wiring is quicker too, and once you’ve done the maths on what you spend at the wholesalers, you will almost certainly be able to trade up and deliver a higher level of specification and quality for the same cost as having multiple lower-spec, standalone low-cost luminaires. Another option is to use a standalone PIR detector to switch with one or more floodlights, none of which then need even to be in direct line of sight of the detection field. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you wiring the master to automate other, existing outdoor lights.
Getting the spec right A key precaution is to get the spec and ratings right, making sure the master will safely and reliably switch all the slaves you plan for. It goes without saying that LED rating should be specified for the strong inrush, not the subsequent low running current. So, for instance, a detector with has a maximum LED load of 150W might be rated for five sets of LED

lamps above 10W, right up to the 150W limit, but only 10 separate LED 10W lamps (a total of just 100W). This is because due to their physical size, lower wattage LED lamps (GU10 type lamps) can have very simple circuitry with surge protection and power factor correction omitted, which puts a massive strain on whatever is switching/controlling them. Timeguard’s tech team is available on the free helpline or email to advise. Indoors, we’ve applied the master-slave concept to PIR detectors as well. For a larger area with corners, nooks and crannies, a single PIR detector will not be able to give the comprehensive detection field needed. So, we linked PIRs in series with one master (with sensitivity controls). The slaves come fitted with cables and standard RJ11 plugs and sockets, and are snapped together in series, so huge amounts of time can be saved on both installation and setup. The ingenious Timeguard linkable concept allows for up to five plug-in slaves, all fitting a standard ceiling aperture so wires between them are simply tucked above the ceiling.
The bottom line? Take time to think through what you need to achieve. Where do you need light, where do you need detection, and where do you need both? Then compare costs between standalone and master-slave options and see what works for each job. SETTING NEW STANDARDS Kohler Uninterruptible Power explains how the available standards can help ensure that UPS systems operate at peak performance, while remaining safe and compliant.
S
uppliers, installers and operators of UPS systems naturally want their installation to be safe, reliable and compliant, while operating at peak performance – and there are many standards available to help them achieve all these objectives. For the UK, the most important are the EN 62040 standards (EN 62040-1, -2 and -3) and the Energy Network Association’s Engineering Recommendation ER G5/41. The EN 62040 standards address safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and performance respectively, while ER G5/4-1 covers harmonics in power distribution networks and limiting their effects on equipment. There are also other standards to cover, environmental protection, installation requirements, earthing considerations and low voltage switchgear and control gear. UPSs are items of electrical equipment that depend heavily on batteries for their functionality. Accordingly, safety standards are provided for both Lithium-ion and Lead-Acid batteries. UPSs are also governed by RoHS legislation, which was originally introduced as Directive 2002/95/EC, and restricted the use of hazardous materials within electrical and electronic products in the EU market. In 2011, this was revised to Directive 2011/65/EU, also known as RoHS-Recast or RoHS 2. This has additions including a CE-marking directive, two further restricted substance categories and further compliance recordkeeping requirements. This, in turn, has been updated by Directive 2015/863; also known as RoHS 3. It added four further categories of restricted substances. WEEE is also applicable to UPS products, as described in Annex lll: Large equipment (any external dimension more than 50cm), Open Scope 2018.

It applies to UPSs intended for installation in any operator-accessible area and specifies requirements to ensure safety for operators and non-specialists who may come into contact with the equipment and, where specially stated, for service personnel. The standard is intended to ensure the safety of installed equipment, either standalone or as a system of interconnected units, subject to installing, operating and maintaining the equipment as prescribed by the manufacturer.

Part 3: The standard applies to electronic indirect AC converter systems with an electrical energy storage device in the DC link. The primary function of the UPS covered by this standard is to ensure continuity of an alternating current power source. The UPS systems may also improve the incoming supply power quality by keeping it within specified characteristics. The performance requirements of this standard are for UPSs within the scope of EN 62040-1.
Part 2: This EMC standard applies to single UPSs installed in any operator accessible area or in separated electrical locations, connected to either industrial or public low voltage supply networks. This EMC standard takes precedence over all aspects of the generic standards and no additional testing is necessary. The requirements have been selected to ensure adequate levels of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for UPSs in public and industrial locations. These levels cannot, however, cover extreme cases which may occur in any location, but with extremely low probability of occurrence. It considers the differing test conditions necessary for UPSs of all physical sizes and power ratings. A UPS unit or system must meet this standard’s relevant requirements as a standalone product. EMC phenomena produced by any customer’s load connected to the UPS equipment’s output will not be considered.

Energy Networks Association ER G5/4-1 The Energy Networks Association states that satisfactory operation of the electricity supply system and user’s equipment is only obtained where electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) between them exists. By limiting the harmonic emissions of customers’ non-linear loads and generating plant, the Engineering Recommendation G5/4-1 helps to fulfil the technical objective of the UK EMC Regulations. These regulations seek to limit the voltage distortion present in distribution networks to below levels at which equipment function and performance are likely to be impaired. Equipment immunity levels are based on a total voltage harmonic distortion (THDv) of 5% in 400V systems. Engineering Recommendation G5/4-1 sets the planning levels for harmonic voltage distortion to be used while connecting non-linear equipment to the supply system. While harmonic distortion limits are not governed by statute, it is incumbent upon the electrical design consultants and manufacturers to ensure emissions of equipment connected to the supply system do not exceed the planning levels set by G5/4-1, and that such harmonic distortions are agreeable to the Network Operating Company (NOC). TESTING TIMES IN THE RENTED SECTOR With new Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector coming into force, electrical contractors will be busy conducting safety checks. Super Rod explains more, and describes why its Ferret WiFi innovation will be the ideal tool.

he new Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020 (England) come into force on July 1 for landlords offering new tenancies, and for existing tenancies on April 1, 2021.
What the Regulations say The Electrical Safety Regulations will require landlords to: • Have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a person who is qualified and competent, at least every five years • Provide a copy of the report (typically, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is used within the industry) to their tenants, and to the local authority if requested • If the EICR requires investigative or remedial works, landlords will have to carry this out In the English Housing Survey carried out in 2018-19, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government indicated that there were 4.6 million private rented households, accounting for 19% of all households. With a potential penalty of up to £30,000 for non-compliance with the Electrical Safety Regulations, it is likely to be a busy period for electricians who will be contacted to carry out these tests.
What is the impact of the current pandemic? Despite the current COVID-19 crisis and the challenges that it brings with it, recent Guidance issued by the Government does make clear that landlords are still required to ensure the electrical safety of their properties, and they must demonstrate they have taken all reasonable steps to comply with the law (communication with tenants/electricians showing they tried to arrange the inspection).

What needs to be tested? The Regulations state that every electrical installation in the residential premises is to be inspected and tested at regular intervals (no more than five years) – in line with BS 7671:2018 – to ensure it is safe. It’s about checking the underlying electrical system – the wiring, the fuse board, earth bonding and all the other bits you can’t see that could be a risk.

s we struggle slowly back from lockdown, for those of us who thought the government instruction to stay at home was serious, we have to regather threads of the projects on which we were working after nine weeks of little activity; activity that is reflected on the ‘paid in’ side of

our account. While the expenses were reduced, the reduction did not match the shrinkage in income. Now is the time to do something about rebuilding the income that has been sacrificed to Coronavirus and make up some of two full months’ earnings. Hopefully, the recent lack of building activity will mean more jobs around to quote on, as developers who have watched their project costs escalate
while nothing has happened are desperate to capitalise. Winning the work is one thing, but having the time to complete it is another. It does not matter whether it is new builds, system extensions or EICRs; finding the extra hours to do the extra work is going to be a challenge. You were already working flat out. Something has to give. You are not going to let it be the quality of your work, so what is it that can give?

Automate your testing Why not take a serious look at automating your testing? While the proportion of time saved varies according to the job you are doing, manufacturers seem to agree that automating your testing can reduce the time taken by up to 40%. The savings are generally in connecting to the circuit just once, and allowing the tester to make the connection, which it can do more rapidly than an operator. The results are displayed for you to check and confirm that they are acceptable before saving them to memory. The results can be downloaded for certification and archiving via USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. An example of this type of system is very relevant in this post-virus world, in which the media are talking about new vehicle buyers abandoning the internal combustion engine in their droves and opting for electric or plug-in hybrid cars. A vast amount of private and public charging capacity will have to be installed. Contractors will, of course, have to do the installations, and, being responsible professionals, will want to check their installations and leave their customers with the reassurance of a certificate to confirm that it was done satisfactorily. Metrel, unlike other manufacturers, have a range of test sets, a selection of multi-function testers and an adapter that will test the vehicle charging points both functionally and electrically.
AutoSequence and testing The AutoSequence function allows Metrel to string together a number of tests, such as voltage, RCD and loop impedance, in a protocol, which – once initiated – can be executed automatically. The clever part of these AutoSequences is that help screens to illustrate the connections required can be integrated, as can a script to guide users through the tests in the most effective manner.

For example, with EVSE testing, it guides you to do the functional tests first, as failure of the functional tests indicates a manufacturing fault and consequently it is not worth continuing. There is a tick and cross form to register that each of the functional states is reacting appropriately, idle, EV detected but not charging, EV charging and an error state with charging interrupted. Following that, the test routine will perform a voltage test, a non-trip loop test through both the 30mA AC RCD and the 6mA DC breaker and finally, a full auto RCD including a ramp test at 0O and 180O for the AC and DC breakers. All the results can also be stored.. For greater efficiency during testing and after for completing the certificate, a schematic can be built in the memory manager. It is a simple diagram of connected folders representing the assets, distribution boards, circuits, charge points etc. These can have individual test functions or full AutoSequences ascribed to them. Testing can be initiated from this point, thus making testing and saving results even easier. For example, the engineer opens the memory manager as shown in Figure 2, makes the connections, taps the circle and the test starts. Once the results are obtained and approved, they can be saved against the asset, and observations and comments can be made using the virtual keyboard (see Figure 3). The whole results can then be downloaded via a USB or smartphone to an 18th Edition certificate. But if you want to work one test at a time, you can do that too! Metrel, metrel.co.uk
