Uncompressed 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 and 1Gb LAN We are pleased to announce the launch of the first HDBaseT™3 matrix product to the market Using HDBaseT™3 technology, these powerful HDBaseT™ matrix support uncompromised 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 resolutions over distances up to 100m over a CAT6A. The new HMX88-18G and HMX44-18G come into their own with advanced audio features specifically designed for maximising the integration of AV sources in the modern home. JANUARY

EDITOR’S COMMENT January is traditionally the month where we all promise ourselves impossible things. We vow to be more organised, more disciplined, more efficient and somehow entirely transformed by the time we reach the second week of the year. The AV world is no different. Installers, distributors and manufacturers alike head into January with a familiar list of well-meaning intentions: keep the project pipeline tidy, stay ahead on paperwork, avoid those 2am WhatsApp messages about firmware updates and maybe even reclaim a weekend or two. And yet, most of us know how this story usually ends. The first big job of the year runs long, the first delivery of the year arrives short and the big plan runs into a reality check. “Sorry, the prototype has changed again.” Add the small matter of ISE looming just around the corner and those brave resolutions begin to wobble. The moment flights get booked and calendars fill with meetings in the Fira, the best laid plans tend to give way to the familiar rhythm of the season.

PAUSE AND REFLECT, POWERFUL ON ITS OWN

But perhaps that is not really the point of resolutions at all. The value often lies less in whether they are achieved and more in the act of pausing to re-assess in the first place.

January gives everyone in the industry a rare moment to step back and take stock. What worked last year, what didn’t and what deserves another go. That process, even if the goals drift or change shape by February, usually leads to other benefits that are not immediately obvious. Reassessing priorities can highlight opportunities that were previously overlooked. Looking again at workloads, team structures or product strategies often sparks ideas that would never appear in the middle of a hectic project week. Even deciding on a resolution that later gets abandoned can reveal something useful about how the business is evolving. In that sense, January acts as a reset button that is helpful even if it fails to deliver on its exact promise. This issue embraces that spirit. Yes, ISE is close enough that many of its themes are beginning to surface here, but the focus of this edition is more about looking forward with a realistic optimism. The industry is changing quickly, projects are becoming more ambitious and the appetite for better experiences remains strong. If a new year is about anything, it is about giving ourselves permission to think bigger while accepting that not every plan will land exactly as intended. So here’s to the resolutions that stick, the ones that drift and the ones that quietly disappear. All of them play a part in shaping the year ahead, and all of them remind us why this industry continues to be as unpredictable as it is exciting.

PMC DONATES SPEAKERS FOR TOGETHER FOR CINEMA ROOM AT BRADFORD ROYAL INFIRMARY

The new Bradford Royal Infirmary Children and Young People’s Cinema was opened on November 27, 2025

PMC has donated models from its Ci series to the latest project by the custom installation industry’s Community Interest Company, Together for Cinema. The project involved transforming a space within Bradford Royal Infirmary’s Children and Young People’s Unit into a cinema room for use by patients at the hospital. “We are delighted to be able to assist with this hugely important installation at the Bradford Royal Infirmary by donating our Ci90

speakers for use in the new children and young people’s cinema,” said Alister Smith, UK Sales Manager. “It will bring joy and a relief from the rigours of hospital stays for many children over the coming years. It is further testament to the amazing work that Ian Morrish and the team at Together for Cinema undertake, to help some of the most deserving kids while they endure extended hospital stays.” The installation was undertaken by wellknown installers, Clever Association, from

Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. The choice of PMC Ci speakers was made as a result of discussions with PMC’s business development manager, Craig Sowerby, about the most suitable models to use. The installation is based around a 100in TV, with an RTI controlled home cinema system, lighting and blinds. Helping make the space child-friendly, welcoming and comfortable were two other companies, Tigerplay, soft-play design specialists, and Creative Joinery and Design, who transformed an old physio room into a safe and themed environment that will be enjoyed for years to come as a cinema, gaming and karaoke room. Speaking on behalf of Together for Cinema, Ian Morrish, founder and MD, said, “The generosity of our industry never ceases to amaze me, and all involved with this installation are so grateful to PMC for donating the excellent PMC Ci90 speaker system. Having just attended the opening, I was delighted with the sound quality, as were the families and staff in the Children’s Ward. A huge heartfelt thank you to PMC for their generosity and for helping create a special room that will help so many children and their families at a very challenging time.” PMC pmc-speakers.com

2N EARNS OFFICIAL RECOGNITION FOR CYBERSECURITY TRANSPARENCY 2N has been officially recognised by the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Program as a CVE Numbering Authority (CNA) – becoming the first manufacturer in its field to achieve this status. MIDWICH REVAMPS INNOVATION HOUSE DEMO SPACE Midwich has unveiled a major refresh of Innovation House, its 50,000sqft Bracknellbased experience centre, positioning it as the UK’s largest multi-technology facility for AV professionals. The upgraded space brings new demonstration zones, enhanced visitor experiences and expanded opportunities for both residential and light commercial installers. Since 2021, Innovation House has welcomed more than 3,000 visitors annually. The latest update introduces new technologies and redesigned areas, including a fully equipped content creation studio that enables partners to produce, record and broadcast professional content on site. From an Essential Install perspective, the refresh delivers two major practical advantages for integrators. First, the residential AV area still features an excellent home cinema demonstration space, giving installers the chance to assess system performance in a properly calibrated environment featuring Krix, Kaleidescape, madVR, Epson and others. For installers designing and upgrading dedicated cinemas or media rooms, this provides a useful part of the Pulse Cinemas/ Invision demo inventory. Second, Innovation House has become a powerful entry point for commercial diversification. The new Microsoft Teams Signature suite, UC&C room solutions by Ashton Bentley, the command-and-control demonstration, projection mapping zones and

retail-focused displays give residential installers clear and accessible pathways into hospitality and hybrid spaces. The refreshed centre also includes a Drone Zone with projection mapping, an AI-enabled Microsoft Teams Signature area powered by Copilot and a dedicated Command and Control area featuring Drone Command technology. Additional highlights include the interactive Retail Zone, an Absen Pixel Pitch learning area and a redesigned stage space for training, presentations and events. With hands-on demonstrations, vendor and integrator support and real-world testing environments, the upgraded Innovation House is set to become an even more significant resource for the AV channel.

ESSENTIAL ORIGIN ACOUSTICS

Jose Coelho, International Business Director at Origin Acoustics, explains how expectations around integrated audio have shifted and how the demands on integrators have consequently evolved. Design has overtaken technology as the primary driver in modern architecture. Across high-end residences and commercial spaces, clients no longer ask if sound is possible — they want to know how it will look, how it will feel and, crucially, how it will harmonise with the environment around it. This shift has transformed expectations for integrators and manufacturers alike. Aesthetic coherence, minimal intrusion and seamless performance have become non-negotiable.

THE DESIGN-FIRST MINDSET

At Origin Acoustics, we believe technology should enhance design, not interrupt it. The company’s guiding philosophy, Design-Centric Technology, reflects this across its product portfolio, which integrates naturally into any space to enhance the atmosphere. Emphasising flexibility, custom finishes and installation simplicity, we bridge the worlds of engineering and design — giving integrators the confidence to engage early in the design process, when true collaboration happens. It is a combination of performance and design where neither dominates, yet both excel.

ESSENTIAL ORIGIN ACOUSTICS

FORM, FUNCTION AND A NEW KIND OF PERFORMANCE

Origin’s approach satisfies both the architect’s demands and the designer’s style without compromising the listening experience. The

new BLENDS Invisible Speaker collection was created to demonstrate that prioritising aesthetics does not impact performance. The result is speakers that disappear completely within walls or ceilings, yet deliver rich, roomfilling sound. Backed by the power of Origin PRO Amplifiers, reliability is unrivalled. Even in commercial settings, the listening experience feels intentional, not industrial. The challenge of fitting bass elegantly into spaces has also been addressed. Our Invisible Ported Subwoofer demonstrates how bass can coexist gracefully with architecture — shallow, elegant enclosures that deliver depth without visual weight.

INNOVATION AT THE MARGINS

Where Origin truly differentiates itself is in the often-overlooked details that define elite integration. Custom grille wrapping, removable sleeves and an in-house finishing team make aesthetic tailoring part of the creative process, not a request to be managed later. These details represent a shift from ‘How do we fit audio into the design?’ to ‘How do design and audio evolve together?’ It is a forwardthinking approach that honours both disciplines — sound as part of the structure, form as part of the listening experience.

the design language itself. Those who rise to this challenge — who speak both the language of aesthetic intent and acoustic engineering — will lead the next generation of intelligent, beautiful spaces. Origin Acoustics anticipated this evolution years ago. Today, we continue to shape it — developing products that empower integrators to deliver invisibility and impact at once. Design-centric integration is not a niche; it is the new standard.

REDEFINING DESIGNCENTRIC TECHNOLOGY

In a world where every line and surface contributes to story and mood, Origin Acoustics reminds us that technology need not shout to be heard. When sound and space move in harmony, design speaks louder than ever. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Designed for an overseas client, the project demanded

exceptional

and planning. Through detailed drawings, renders and performance analysis, New Wave AV ensured the client could visualise and understand every aspect of the space remotely. The result is a room optimised for ultra-wide video and 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos audio, a truly uncompromising cinematic setup. Seating was a critical decision made more complex by distance. Showroom visits were arranged during the client’s UK trips to ensure

comfort and style were never compromised. The final layout includes two rows of seating on a raised platform, ensuring that viewing angles and sight lines meet CEDIA (home cinema and smart home trade body) recommendations. Despite the room’s compact size and single sliding door entry the team overcame logistical challenges through precise coordination with builders and suppliers. Seating was deconstructed and rebuilt inside the room and deliveries were timed to avoid overfilling the space. All elements of the room were designed by New Wave, including the audio visual components, the lighting, the building elements

such as the coffered ceiling, baffle wall buildout, seating platform and final room finishes. The customer reports, “The cinema looks and sounds awesome, above and beyond our expectations. Working with New Wave on this project was an absolute delight. They provided great, reliable and constructive advice and their execution was excellent. We are using the room way more than anticipated and are loving every minute.” New Wave AV newwaveav.co.uk

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: SONY VPL-XW5100ES

SONY VPL-XW5100ES, AKA THE BRAVIA PROJECTOR 7 Sony’s new entry-level Bravia projector brings the brand’s XR processing and a laser engine delivering 2,200 lumens to a rather accessible price point. I went all wobbly bottom-lipped when the Sony Bravia 9 comprehensively outgunned my own VPL-XW7000ES, thanks mainly to the shift from X1 to XR processing. Could the new Bravia 7 with XR processing do the same to the well-regarded VPL-XW5000ES? Well, yes, it does, creating a stunning dark-room cinema image at less than half the retail ticket price of its step-up brother. At the heart of the XW5100ES lies the same trio of 0.61-in SXRD panels that define Sony’s latest approach to true 4K cinema. Unlike single-chip designs that simulate 4K through pixel-shifting, Sony’s native-resolution SXRD architecture delivers a full 8.3-millionpixel image for each frame. The projector’s Z-Phosphor laser light engine, with its rated life of 20,000 hours, should ensure performance for the long haul without the diminishing brightness of bulb-based designs. Probably more practical for end users is that lasers get up to full brightness a lot quicker than bulbs and, if this super-quiet projector’s fan is anything to go by, run a lot cooler. I would say the incredibly low noise is a key feature of the Bravia 7, as even at full laser brightness the fan noise is as quiet as, or maybe quieter than, the 7000ES at 80%. Sony lists

18 JANUARY 2026

the BRAVIA Projector 7 with a claimed acoustic noise of just 24 dB, which puts it among the quietest native-4K laser projectors in its class. Of course, 80% of 3,200 lumens is still a few hundred lumens higher than the Bravia’s 2,200 and, side by side, that is clearly noticeable. Sony suggests the brightness is good for screens in the 100 to 130-in range in ‘light-controlled rooms’, and I would say the latter is a practical maximum. For mixed media rooms with living room décor and some light bleed from outside, you would want to be at 100 in or less or deploy a screen with some gain. Dynamic contrast is claimed to be effectively limitless thanks to laser dimming, while native contrast around 16,000:1 gives the image trademark Sony depth and black-level stability. The XR Processor brings with it a set of imageprocessing technologies more familiar from Sony’s television division: XR Dynamic Tone Mapping, XR Deep Black, XR Triluminous Pro and XR Clear Image. It’s been a while since I have seen an older 5000ES, but knowing how much all this tech improved the step up from the 7000ES to the Bravia 9, this is a big uptick, particularly with HDR content. The other major upgrade is the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 connectivity with support for 4K

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

120 Hz input and a measured latency as low as 12 milliseconds in Game Mode. That makes the XW5100ES one of the first genuinely dual-purpose Sony projectors that could be used as both a serious home cinema machine and satisfy the PlayStation 5 or Xbox gamer. Having never really got past Donkey Kong and Rick Dangerous, I may not be best suited to comment here, but for integrators building hybrid cinema-gaming rooms, it adds a whole new sales angle. Physically, the projector remains Sony’s signature angular form, which I have always thought gives a nod to a Star Wars Empireclass destroyer. I might just be a geek. The surface texture of the case has got a little more ‘rough’ than previous generations, which isn’t an issue in use but does show finger marks and dust when installing. At just over 13 kg, it’s easy to partner with a ceiling mount, and its 1.38–2.21:1 throw ratio and fairly generous lens shift (±71 per cent vertical, ±25 per cent horizontal) are good. That lens shift offers around 10% less adjustment scope than the step-up models, but I can’t foresee too many installation situations where that might be an issue.

/essential-install-mag

essentialinstall.com

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: SONY VPL-XW5100ES What is a little disappointing is the engineering behind the manual lens shift adjustment itself. I get the cost saving of not having motors, but the manual lens position adjustment has the clunkiest pair of wheels I have ever used on a premium projector. There is a massive amount of slack when you reverse direction and harsh ‘sticky’ jumps that make accurate image positioning a bit of a PITA. OK, you may only ever have to use this adjustment once during set-up and never again, but it could feel a whole lot better. That said, the lens and its control electronics are not short of features. Aspect Ratio Scaling affords switching between 16:9 and 2.35:1 content without mechanical lens shifts. For clients with a CinemaScope screen, this is a handy step-up feature not seen in the older 5000ES, albeit likely at the expense of some resolution compared to a true anamorphic lens. Support for such remains present in the installation menu, with scaling options for 1.24× or 1.32× lenses, meaning integrators can add a dedicated anamorphic piggy-back lens if required. Lens focus and zoom are also manually controlled, so installations demanding full lens memories for multiple aspect ratios will still need one of the step-up Bravia models.

CONNECTIVITY AND CONTROL

Control options here include LAN, RS-232C and IR, with Crestron, Control4, Savant and AMX all supported via existing or forthcoming drivers. Network control allows remote monitoring and diagnostics, useful for service contracts or proactive maintenance within larger CI projects. The 12-volt trigger socket remains output only. This is a personal ‘irk’, as it doesn’t allow the AVR to simply power on the projector without some sort of control system integration. The feature is designed to trigger screen drop or raise, or limited masking and its 12-volt 100 mA output will be fine for just that, but why no trigger input exists on Sony’s projectors remains a frustration for me at least. You can forgive its foibles as soon as it’s powered up, however, as Sony continues to shine in its colour science and motion-handling tech. The XR Processor’s dynamic tone mapping gives HDR material a convincing balance between shadow detail and highlight control, and colour saturation benefits from Sony’s Triluminous Pro engine, giving skin tones a superbly realistic vibe. It’s close to set-and-forget even without calibration and the picture balance in almost all standard picture modes is perfect for day-to-day content viewing. I settled on Cinema 2 with the brightness and laser power nudged up, but with precious few other tweaks. Colour rendering, motion and contrast are all very good and, save for the significant drop in brightness, the overall image quality is not far shy of the Bravia 9. It may not match some rivals for sheer lumen output, but the Bravia 7 delivers an image that feels composed and cinematic rather than aggressively bright, which plays directly to the expectations of the mid-tier home cinema market. That makes it arguably the smart-money choice in the line-up. It delivers all the benefits of Bravia-series native4K three-chip architecture, XR processing and integration support, while saving money by chopping off the nice-to-haves like a motorised lens and an ultra-high-output laser. For larger screens or rooms with some ambient light, such as partially shaded windows or rooms with light-coloured walls that re-reflect some of the screen lux, you will need to step up to the Bravia 9, as the 2,200 lumens here really isn’t that bright. Yet for the bulk of real-world cinema installs, with screens up to 130-in diagonal and a Henry Ford-approved décor palette, the Bravia 7 is an outstanding performer.

How does the unit’s bang for buck stack up?

ESSENTIAL TOGETHER FOR CINEMA

TOGETHER AGAIN!

Keith Dutch Peerless AV and Ian Morrish, TFC

Together For Cinema (TFC) looks forward to New Year, what has already been achieved and the fresh challenges ahead. As we start the new year, it feels like a natural moment to reflect on what Together For Cinema has achieved over the past 12 months, while also looking ahead to what is shaping up to be another busy and exciting year. The close of 2025 marked a significant chapter for us, not just in terms of numbers delivered, but in the depth of industry support and the growing confidence that together we are creating a lasting impact. Thanks to the continued backing of manufacturers, distributors, integrators and individuals across the AV community, we delivered seven new cinema rooms during 2025. That takes our total to 58 installations completed since we began, with an equivalent paid for value now standing at just over £1.5 million. This represents an extraordinary collective contribution from the industry and, more importantly, has created moments of respite, joy and togetherness for children and families who need them most.

20 JANUARY 2026

During the final quarter of the year we were fortunate to attend three cinema room openings, in Teesside, Sheffield and Bradford. This was not a planned regional focus, simply how the programme fell, but each opening

served as a powerful reminder of why these projects matter. Seeing children and families use the spaces for the first time never loses its impact, and it continues to be the strongest motivation for everyone involved.

ESSENTIAL TOGETHER FOR CINEMA

Bluebell Wood

From an installation perspective, the year required flexibility. We began with eight projects scheduled, added another one during the year, but then saw two move into 2026! These seven rooms were delivered across a broad range of charitable settings, from children’s hospices and hospitals to specialist care environments. Every installation relied on the professionalism, care and generosity of the installers involved, and it cannot be overstated how central their role is in making each project a success. Quite simply, these rooms only happen because great installers step forward and commit to making a difference. Alongside the installations, 2025 also saw the development of something entirely new for the industry. GivingBack.tech was created to provide a dedicated platform to repurpose AV equipment to good causes. The aim is simple but powerful. To connect donors such as manufacturers, distributors, integrators and corporates with registered charities and community interest companies that can benefit from second hand, discontinued or B stock equipment. The site is now live in its initial test

stage and available for all to view so do take a look at www.givingback.tech. This platform has the potential to become a valuable industry resource, reducing waste while extending the life and value of equipment into meaningful community use. However, its success depends entirely on engagement. The more donors that register and post available products, the more effective the platform will become. Initial outreach to charities and CICs will begin later in 2026, so now is the time for companies to earmark suitable stock and help build the foundations of something that can grow over time. Recognition during the year was also a welcome boost. Being named one of 40 Selco Master Builder Community Award winners for 2025 was an honour in itself, and progressing to become a Community Hero finalist brought additional national exposure. While awards are never the goal, this type of recognition helps raise awareness of what the AV industry can achieve when it works together for the wider community.

Fundraising also played an important role in closing out the year. Highlights included the generous proceeds from the Peerless AV Charitable Golf Day, which will directly support future installations, and continued support through community award funding. We also submitted grant applications towards the end of the year and remain optimistic about securing additional backing to support our 2026 programme. Looking ahead, the installation schedule for this year is already well developed, with projects planned across the UK and several designs already finalised. We expect to complete seven to eight new cinema rooms during the year, while continuing discussions with additional venues to maintain a strong pipeline beyond that. At the same time, our charitable partner programme will be more important than ever. While we fully understand the pressures many businesses are facing, securing a little support from many partners remains the most sustainable way for us to continue delivering. As we move into 2026, Together For Cinema is still a relatively young organisation, not yet three years into being a registered Community Interest Company. That makes the scale of what has been achieved even more humbling. None of it would be possible without the widespread and consistent support of the AV industry, and for that we remain genuinely grateful. The coming year will bring new challenges, new installations and new opportunities to give back. With continued collaboration and commitment, we can ensure that Together For Cinema keeps delivering spaces that make a real and lasting difference. Together For Cinema togetherforcinema.co.uk

TOP KNOTT

HOW LONG DOES SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY LAST? Today’s smart home systems age faster than most customers realise. Smart integrators who set expectations early and build service into every project stay ahead of the curve. More insight from our resident number cruncher and CI expert Jason Knott. NETWORKING & WI-FI: 5 TO 7 YEARS Standards like Wi-Fi 6, 6E and now 7 move quickly. So does the bandwidth coming into UK homes. Old routers simply can’t keep up.

CONTROL PROCESSORS: 7 TO 10 YEARS The brain evolves. Firmware changes, security hardens, integration methods shift. At some point the old dog stops learning new tricks.

AV HARDWARE: 5 TO 10 YEARS HDMI versions, HDR formats, streaming codecs. All change, all the time. Clients expecting their decade-old hardware to handle today’s sources will feel the squeeze. I recently had the unpleasant experience of having our home hot water heater stop working. The unit had a seven-year warranty and officially conked out at six years, 11 months, and 26 days. Whew… we made it just under the wire for a warranty replacement, which I am happy to say the manufacturer honoured. The hot water heater failure came on the heels of already replacing a very expensive refrigerator that stopped working after six years, along with a fancy drawer microwave that only lasted four years. The days of ‘30-year appliances’ are long gone. It begs the question for our industry: If major appliances now live fast and die young, how long can clients reasonably expect their smart home systems to last? They happily swap phones every few years, but a whole-home lighting or control system? In their minds, that should last nearer to a generation than a gadget cycle. Kaine Pritchett, Managing Director of Virtus Integration in Telford, tackles that mindset headon. After receiving a service call on a project he completed in 2008, the homeowner put him on the spot, asking, “What happens when a system gets old?” A simple question, but one that cuts to the heart of modern integration. Nothing

22 JANUARY 2026

lasts forever, especially in a sector driven by software updates, security patches and wireless standards that evolve faster than a Premier League manager’s tenure. Rather than dodge the conversation, Pritchett leans into it. He developed a clear, honest lifespan guide for the systems he installs. It is refreshingly blunt and UK integrators may find it a useful benchmark when setting expectations.

CORE INFRASTRUCTURE (CABLING, FIBRE): 20 TO 30 YEARS If the backbone is designed and installed properly, it endures. Like good foundations on an older home, this is where long-term value sits.

LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEMS: 10 TO 15 YEARS Modules can be serviced, swapped and updated, but eventually the march of technology

SECURITY & ACCESS CONTROL: 7 TO 12 YEARS Cameras, intercoms and door stations improve rapidly. Increased resolution and better analytics can make older gear feel quaint. Losing a lighting keypad is not as brutal as what I had to experience taking cold showers for three days, but system downtime still stings. Your customers rely on their tech for comfort, convenience and peace of mind. When it hiccups, the household feels it. That is why UK integrators should talk about lifespan early…. not as fearmongering, but as practical stewardship. Discussing realistic lifespan timelines builds trust and opens the door for something many integrators underutilise: service agreements. If clients know their systems will age, they are far more willing to invest in ongoing care. The technology may not last forever, but the relationship with your client can.

leaves older platforms behind. Even the best systems don’t outrun progress.

AUTOMATED IN ACTION WITH CONTROL4 Award-winning Automated Spaces creates health group independent living smart spaces powered by Control4. Spaces that promoted learning was the aim of the project

26 JANUARY 2026

As part of a transformative initiative funded by the UK Government’s Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF), a consortium of three Kent colleges led by East Kent College has sought to address skills gaps in health and social care by working with Control4 integrator Automated Spaces to bring cutting-edge assisted living technologies into the curriculum. Automated Spaces designed and delivered immersive demonstration suites across six college sites, enabling students to explore the “art of the possible” in independent living environments, with the project recently winning the Excellence in Innovation and Technology Beyond the Home categories at the prestigious 2025 CEDIA EMEA Awards. East Kent College, North Kent College and MidKent College shared a two-fold vision: to create hands-on learning spaces for students and to support the development of two new curriculum streams – ‘Assistive Technology for Health and Care Environments’ and ‘Digital Skills for Health and Care Professionals’. Automated Spaces proposed a unique concept, ‘Independent Living Smart Spaces’, which combines smart home solutions with a connected care platform that also has the ability to trigger actions within the environment in response to monitored events. Six

demonstration suites have now been delivered as part of the project, with three installed at East Kent College, two at North Kent College and one at MidKent College. Central to the success of the project was an “outcome first” approach. “Rather than focusing on technology for its own sake, we designed the demonstration suites to work around real-world scenarios,” explains Alan Matthews of Automated Spaces. “These included a person living at home with dementia, a residential care setting and sheltered housing. We mapped each scenario to specific challenges and solutions, making the technology relatable and accessible for both educators and students.” With a tight delivery window of less than three months, Automated Spaces conducted thorough site surveys at each college. Recognising the need for consistency and efficiency, the company opted for custom-built exhibition space display systems, assembled off-site and tailored to each room’s unique characteristics, making them ideal for rapid installation. The Independent Living Smart Spaces solution is built on the Control4 platform from ADI | Snap One, facilitating seamless integration of security, entertainment, lighting, comfort and healthcare technologies. Underpinning these systems, Araknis routers and wireless access points, Pakedge switches and WattBox power distribution units provided reliable networking and power management, essential for uninterrupted operation of all connected devices. User interaction was made intuitive and empowering through Control4 Halo remote controls and in-wall touchscreens, allowing effortless control over the suite’s features. Furthermore, Automated Spaces developed custom Control4 drivers, in collaboration with Janus Technology, to enable seamless integration with independent living technologies such as fall sensors, hydration monitoring devices and connected care platforms. These deliver real-time health insights and alerts that support proactive care and wellbeing. of assistive technologies. Teachers receive comprehensive training focused on scenariobased demonstrations rather than technical detail, supported by the intuitive Control4 interface and outcome-driven design. “The colleges are delighted with what we have achieved,” concludes Alan Matthews. “The project not only enhanced their curriculum but has also set a benchmark for how smart home automation, powered by Control4, can support independent living and digital skills development in health and social care education. We are excited about what the future holds in this sector, both for us and for our industry.” More information on the group of colleges is available at ekcgroup.ac.uk. ESSENTIAL CEDIA

LIGHTING THE WAY WITH CEDIA: WHY LIGHTING AND WELLNESS MATTER AT ISE 2026 Andy Bull, Director of Design at Lighting Audio Video Projects, shines a light on the road ahead. A few years ago, if you had told me that lighting would become the centrepiece of my career, I might have raised an eyebrow. Like many in our world of smart homes, I came up through the integration side of the business first: audio, video and automation. Lighting was something to make work with everything else. But the deeper I got into lighting controls and design, the more I realised just how powerful light can be. How it shapes mood, supports health and can fundamentally change how a space feels and functions. That insight shifted my path and eventually led me to establish my own practice focused on thoughtful, humancentric lighting design. Light is one of the most influential factors in how we experience a home, and yet it is often misunderstood or hidden behind complexity. That’s why I’m honoured to be leading the Lighting & Wellness track at the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Conference during ISE 2026 in Barcelona. This year’s programme is built around real challenges and real outcomes and I’m excited to share practical, grounded insight gained through years of hands-on experience.

LIGHTING: FROM INVISIBLE TO ESSENTIAL

Good lighting controls aren’t complicated; they’re intelligent and critical. They help spaces feel intuitive, free users from frustration and make lighting work without needing to think about it. Over the years, the projects I’ve been involved in, from private residences to more demanding environments such as healthcare spaces, have underscored how impactful lighting can be. Dynamic colour temperatures in clinical environments and thoughtful zoning in homes support wellbeing, circadian rhythms, comfort and clarity.

SESSIONS AT ISE 2026

Across four sessions, I’ll be taking peers on a journey that connects why lighting matters with how to do it well:

28 JANUARY 2026

• Principles of Good Lighting Design (3 Feb, 14:30–16:00): We’ll strip back complexity and explore the fundamentals of truly effective lighting — what it is, why it matters and how to make it feel right in any space. • Lighting Controls: Everything I Wish I’d Known (4 Feb, 10:00–11:30): This session is built on lived experience — the lessons, the missteps and the sanity-savers. We’ll cover standards, scenes, sensors, simplicity and practical strategies that can be applied immediately. • Lighting for Life: Why Human-Centric Design Matters in Smart Homes (4 Feb, 12:00–13:30): Human-centric lighting can sound like a buzzword, but the science and impact are real. We’ll separate meaningful practice from hype and look at how to apply evidence-based design in smart homes.

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

• Wellness: Fad or Business Opportunity? (5 Feb, 12:00–13:30): Wellness is everywhere, but how does it fit into smart homes as a professional offering and business driver? We’ll explore opportunities grounded in genuine value for clients and integrators alike.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN US

ESSENTIAL WHO’S WHO: HOME ENTERTAINMENT TV BRACKETS

SANUS – THE BEST CUSTOM INSTALLATION AV MOUNTING SOLUTIONS Making a very welcome return to ISE, Sanus, will be presenting its latest ranges of premium TV mounts and audio accessories. Part of Legrand, the global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures, Sanus is the no.1 best-selling TV mount brand in the U.S.* For over 35 years the Sanus name has been synonymous with truly innovative products. It is a world-leader in TV mounting solutions, that enable installers to maximise their customers’ experience by offering high-quality mounting solutions. Audio solutions and a comprehensive range of AV racks complete the line-up – positioning Sanus as the go-to supplier for installation companies.

SUPER-SIZED

Sanus is well known for its extra-large mounts, serving as a very useful product line for highend custom installations, where ultra-large screens are increasingly being used in place of projection systems. Sanus has made it possible to easily, safely and securely mount screens up to 140in in-size. The new VXL7 is a fixed position mount that accommodates these enormous TVs, making it the perfect accompaniment for the ultra large screens from the likes of Hisense and TCL. The VXT7 utilises the same wall plate as the VXL7, but with the additional benefit of enabling the screen to be tilted by +7/-10 degrees. For a full-motion offering the VXF830 takes this extra-large screen capability to the next level, providing almost unlimited positioning options for screens from 65in to 100in and weighing 79kg.

INNOVATION ALWAYS AT THE HEART

The latest developments include 4D + Shift, technologies that are unique to Sanus, and which make it possible to adjust the height of the TV by up to 20cm, post installation. This adjustment enables easy precision placement, making it ideal for mounting the TV around a power outlet or above a mantle with the option to add a soundbar later. And, should there be any kind of mismeasurement during installation, it is easy to reposition the TV. The Shift enabled VSF817, VMF822 and VLF828 mounts cater for screens from 19in up to 90in and a maximum weight of 56kg. Each one features 4D full-motion and the tried and tested Sanus features such as Virtual Axis, FluidMotion and ProSet. Mindful of the need for TVs to be integrated into the home environment with the minimum of intrusion, Sanus has long championed Super Slim as a core feature of its mounts, positioning the screen close to the wall. Even the full motion VLFS820, with its capability to mount 40”90” screens, provide a 50cm extension and 58-degree swivel, it holds the screen just 4cm from the wall.

SONOS, SONY AND UNIVERSAL AUDIO SOLUTIONS

It’s not just vision products. The range of audio accessories, being showcased at ISE, facilitate mounting for everything from a Sonos Amp to Sony Atmos speakers and soundbars. Sanus has forged a strategic partnership with both brands, supporting their new products with dedicated mounts and stands.

The Sanus WSBSBTV1-B2 is height adjustable soundbar mount for the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 and Bar 9 soundbars, which can be directly attached to most 50in90in TVs and popular TV mount brands. Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Quad speakers create a genuine Dolby Atmos immersive sound field from just four speakers and the Sanus WSSBTQA-B2 speaker stands mount them at the perfect position and height. The Designed for Sonos range encompasses the brand’s Era speakers, the Beam, Arc and recently released ACE headphones. Designed to work perfectly with new and legacy Sonos products, the range makes installation and operation a simple process, while retaining a complementary aesthetic. And for products from other manufacturers, a range of universal mounts provide a robust mounting solution, such as the WSBWM1 Universal Extendable Soundbar Mount, which maximise the audio performance of Dolby Atmos soundbars.

RACK ‘EM UP

Helping organise AV equipment installations are the company’s server racks. Ranging in size from 15U to 44U, the Component Series pre-assembled racks offer the perfect size and capacity for the majority of domestic installations. Self-assembly open frame racks, from 10U to 20U permit mix and match and offer a stackable solution to create an almost unlimited total height. They are light and quick to assemble – taking as little as 15 minutes, so perfect for the busy installer. Sanus is a brand that is at the heart of home entertainment, with the perfect solutions for your customers. Visit the team at ISE on stand 2A885 and learn more at sanus.com.

ESSENTIAL WHO’S WHO: LEADING ACOUSTIC ENGINEERING

DEVIALET, THE GOLD STANDARD IN ACOUSTIC INTEGRATION At the forefront of acoustic engineering, Devialet is born from a conviction: that the transformative power of sound belongs to everyone.

The House’s mission is to create deep, physical, and real connections through listening, fueled by relentless innovation. Devialet’s success is built on 250 registered patents and radical technologies that define its product range, from integrated amplifiers and speakers to soundbars and wireless earbuds. To date, these innovations have earned the company over 100 international awards.

DEFINING THE FUTURE OF SOUND THROUGH PATENTED TECHNOLOGY

Devialet has leveraged extensive research and development to introduce several proprietary technologies. These innovations fundamentally change the approach to sound reproduction, offering specific advantages relevant to Custom Install deployments: ADH (Analog Digital Hybrid) Amplification: This technology resolves a long-standing compromise in audio amplification. ADH successfully merges the high-fidelity sound quality traditionally associated with inefficient analog (Class A) amplification with the power density and thermal efficiency of digital (Class D) amplification. For integrators, this translates into systems capable of delivering superior audio clarity and performance while maintaining optimal heat management, a critical factor for enclosed or continuously operating installations. SAM® (Speaker Active Matching): Complementing ADH, SAM is an algorithm engineered to deliver absolute fidelity while

36 JANUARY 2026

continuously protecting the loudspeakers guaranteeing system longevity and consistent sound quality in complex, multi-unit installations. HBI (Heart Bass Implosion): HBI is a suite of multiphysics innovations that powers the emission of ultra-low frequencies in a compact form factor—reaching depths of 14 Hz —eliminating the need for large external subwoofers, simplifying architectural integration, and preserving aesthetic goals. The result: infra-bass you don’t just hear but feel inside.

DEVIALET PHANTOM ULTIMATE: ENGINEERED FOR EXCELLENCE

Devialet Phantom Ultimate, the new generation of the iconic Devialet Phantom speaker, introduced last September, is the definitive proof of Devialet savoir-faire. On the acoustic front, performance has been significantly improved through an extended high-frequency response, gaining 4 kHz and 12 kHz respectively for the 98 dB and 108 dB models. This level of output is directly facilitated by ADH® New Gen and HBI®, while SAM® guarantees perfect power control and the reproduction of sound waves with exceptional accuracy From a technological standpoint, Devialet Phantom Ultimate integrates a new NXP IMX8 Nano processor, which provides increased power and advanced audio processing, operating on the redesigned Devialet DOS 3 software architecture. Architecturally, the device retains its iconic and timeless oblong shape but

features a refined design, including a subtly reworked tweeter grille and new finishes such as Light Pearl and Deep Forest, in addition to the exclusive Opéra de Paris edition adorned with 22-carat gold leaf. Regarding the user experience, the entire process has been redesigned around the DOS 3 software and an overhauled Devialet app, allowing access to unprecedented listening customization through fine-tuned audio modes and a new 6-band equalizer. Connectivity is seamless, integrating an extended range of streaming protocols including Airplay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Roon Ready, and Audirvana. By fusing uncompromising sound quality with functional, elegant design across its product range, Devialet provides integrators with solutions that solve the most complex installation challenges by offering a verifiable standard of performance and future-proof design. ESSENTIAL WHO’S WHO: CINEMA-FIRST ENGINEERING

INTEGRATORS: DIFFERENTIATE WITH PURPOSE-BUILT HOME CINEMA SOUND For integrators who build true home cinemas, ASCENDO isn’t just another speaker brand. It is a specialist partner that helps you stand out. A STRATEGIC DEALER MODEL THAT PROTECTS MARGINS AND REDUCES COMPETITION

Photo: Atlanta Home Theater

While many manufacturers retrofit pro audio products (such as concert speakers) for residential use, ASCENDO designs for home cinema first. The company’s speakers, subwoofers and electronics are engineered to produce the time-coherent, low-distortion performance that movies demand: extreme dynamic range, precise imaging and a bass platform that doesn’t mask midrange detail. That focus on cinema-first engineering is evident in its product architecture and measurementdriven approach.

LINEARITY, COHESION AND SYSTEM THINKING ASCENDO’s engineering emphasises linearity and system cohesion: subwoofers that extend cleanly into the midbass, main speakers with time-coherent behaviour and DSP-based speaker management that ties the whole system together. The practical result for integrators is predictable, tunable performance rather than a collection of components that require heroic EQ to behave. Because ASCENDO offloads the deepest infrasonic content to dedicated infrasonic subwoofers, the main (kick) subwoofers operate more efficiently within their intended range. This delivers tighter, more articulate midbass and cleaner transients with extremely low distortion, creating a more satisfying and natural experience for both film and music.

38 JANUARY 2026

One of ASCENDO’s biggest advantages for custom integrators is its selective distribution model. The company curates its dealer network and does not operate on an ‘open to all’ basis. This means ASCENDO is highly selective about who represents the brand in each market, preserving dealer differentiation and reducing local channel conflict. For integrators that compete on expertise rather than price, this approach helps protect territory, support premium pricing and turn showroom demonstrations into a local event rather than a commodity tick on a long product list.

INFRASONICS AS A SHOWROOM AND SALES MAGNET

ASCENDO is widely recognised as a leader in infrasonic subwoofers. Its 24 in, 28 in, 32 in, 64 in and even 100 in infrasonic models are not just engineering statements but a new product category for dealers and therefore a new revenue stream. Many audio brands claim to reproduce single-digit Hertz frequencies, but most fall short because they overlook the physics of air displacement and room acoustics. The ultra-low frequencies present in many movies demand both a very large cone area and extreme linear travel to generate appropriate SPLs in real environments without distortion. ASCENDO’s approach is different. Every aspect of its subwoofers and amplifiers — cone size, excursion, motor design and power — is engineered specifically to move massive volumes of air precisely and linearly. Off-the-shelf amplifiers and standardsized woofers simply cannot achieve the required control or displacement. Attempts to do so often result in uncontrolled bass and high distortion. For integrators, ASCENDO infrasonic showroom demonstrations become a genuine attraction and destination — one that few other audio brands can match.

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

PRODUCT-LEVEL DIFFERENTIATORS YOU CAN SELL Beyond infrasonics, ASCENDO offers a range of technical differentiators for integrators, including concentric point-source designs and horn-loaded options for coherent imaging, sealed high-excursion subwoofers with exceptionally low distortion, active three-way solutions such as the HALO 10 cardioid speaker and deep DSP and amplifier integration. These attributes move the conversation beyond selling loudspeakers to specifying predictable, engineerable systems that perform consistently in real-world environments.

INDEPENDENT MEASUREMENTS FOR TRANSPARENCY ASCENDO places strong emphasis on transparency. All product measurements are independently conducted and published, giving integrators and clients a clear and objective view of system performance. This ensures that performance claims are supported by data rather than marketing language, helping to build trust with clients and reinforcing dealer credibility in the high-end market. For integrators looking to convert high-networth individuals into high-value customers, ASCENDO merits serious consideration. ASCENDO Immersive Audio aia-cinema.com

What’s Behind Your Home Cinema Screen?

ASCENDO’s flagship BLACK SWAN speaker set the standard in immersive home cinema sound. Now, we’ve captured its essence in a new shallow form...without compromises. Meet THE HALO. With just 10 inches of depth, its 3-way active design delivers staggering output above 136 dB with stunning resolution. A cardioid array of six woofers locks the bass to the display, eliminating room interaction for pure immersion. And while you may never see these speakers stashed behind the screen, their sonic perfection is unmistakable. THE HALO: The beating heart of luxury home cinema.

ESSENTIAL SMART THINKING

FLEX YOUR AUDIO EXPERTISE Mathew Moule, Managing Director at Acoustic GRG Products, offers his perspective on how acoustic treatment is evolving and what best practice looks like today.

Acoustic panels have traditionally followed a form-follows-function approach. Diffusers built from blocks or steps of timber or gypsum deliver exactly the performance required but inevitably look like they belong in a recording studio. They work extremely well, but the aesthetic is often at odds with the design expectations of modern residential environments. Absorbing panels have typically relied on frames of varying depth, filled with Rockwool or glasswool before being fabric wrapped. This remains a simple and effective way to achieve broadband sound absorption, particularly on walls and ceilings. However, it is also a traditional method that offers designers limited scope for creativity. In shared living spaces this can leave a noticeable gap, especially where WAF considerations come into play. In recent years, the palette of materials suitable for acoustic treatment has expanded significantly, helping products sit more naturally within interior schemes. Yet while this satisfies aesthetic ambitions, listeners can be left underwhelmed if materials are not used in a balanced and technically-considered way. One of the headline materials is PET, manufactured from bottle flakes and recycled plastics. It is available in a wide range of colours and supplied as a board that can be cut, shaped or grooved for visual interest, or formed into baffles and clouds. However, its typical 12 or 24mm thickness limits broadband performance. PET is effective at high frequencies but usually requires air gaps or secondary absorbers to deliver meaningful broadband results. Standard versions often reach Class E, D or C,

essentialinstall.com

/essential-install-mag

with Class B achievable through more advanced mounting methods. Slatted wood solutions have also grown in popularity, offering high frequency absorption while slotting neatly into living rooms, retail spaces and restaurants. At the premium end, veneered boards and real timbers with micro or nano perforations deliver genuine Class A performance. Thousands of tiny perforations allow sound to pass through while maintaining the natural look of wood and from a short distance they remain almost invisible. Developments in vacuum pressing and moulding have widened the design possibilities even further. Manufacturers can now create flowing forms such as waves and arcs, or combine diffusing and absorbing elements into a single visually striking piece that still offers robust acoustic control. CNC cutting adds another level of flexibility, allowing complex 3D shapes in MDF or PET. PET is particularly effective when its end-grain faces the room, delivering unexpectedly strong absorption. Beyond home cinema rooms, wider architectural materials are increasingly being used to address acoustic needs. Wood wool boards, acoustic plaster systems, wide format textiles and perforated or slotted timbers all play a part. Whatever the approach, the two most important characteristics remain consistent performance and strong fire safety. All products should be non-flammable or difficult to burn, yet too many home cinema acoustic solutions still fail to meet even basic fire safety standards. This is an area that requires improvement across the industry.

@Install_mag

/Essentialinstall

Good design starts with good data. Most acoustic materials include test results that outline their performance and skilled designers will combine multiple types to balance low, mid and high frequency control. Public spaces follow specific performance criteria but the principle is the same; the right product must meet the right need. When acoustics and aesthetics align, the end result is always stronger.

DESIGN TECHNIQUES

A wide range of acoustic design packages now offer accurate room simulations supported by built-in standards, product data and predefined room types. This makes it straightforward to map out a space, calculate its existing RT, predict the desired RT and specify the correct materials to achieve it. These tools are easy to use and invaluable for delivering a professional finish. Higher-end systems even provide auralisation, allowing designers to hear how the room will sound once treated. Most products are rated from Class E to Class A, helping to benchmark expected broadband performance.

MEASUREMENT

Physical measurement remains an important part of the process. High quality microphones and reliable loudspeakers are essential, although modern prediction software and high quality product data now enable excellent results even before installation begins. For the most accurate outcome, Mathew recommends working with a qualified acoustic consultant. When it comes to acoustics, experience is hard to beat.

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS

BEYOND IMMERSION: THE TRENDS REDEFINING THE MODERN PROCESSOR The AV experts at Trinnov provide some insight into the future of processing as well as preview what visitors can expect from the brand at ISE 2026 including the highly anticipated AltitudeCI. If there was a single message that kept coming up at ISE 2025, it was this: immersive and networked audio are no longer optional extras; they are core to what a contemporary system looks like. The debate has shifted from “should we bother with immersive?” to much more practical questions about scale, speaker placement and making these formats work in very different settings, from small private rooms to large commercial cinemas. In parallel, IP‑based audio has quietly moved from the commercial world into CI installations. Dante and AES67 are showing up more often in processing chains and are widely seen as a neat way to move a lot of channels without dragging huge looms of cable around. So, while ISE 2025 underlined that a serious home cinema is now immersive by default and networked at its core, the interesting question going into ISE 2026 is beyond formats or transports. Now we must ask: how will the industry choose to build, once advanced formats and transports are a given?

48 JANUARY 2026

The Three S’s: Scalability, Serviceability, Sustainability 2026 looks set to be a turning point for home‑cinema processors: away from fixed, one‑shot hardware and towards architectures that are expected to adapt, evolve and hold up over time. A useful way to frame that shift is through three ideas: • Scalability – systems that can grow with the client. • Serviceability – systems that stay healthy through regular hardware and software updates and remote support. • Sustainability – systems designed to last, rather than being swapped out every few years. These are not just marketing slogans. They already influence how products are built, how installations are planned and how businesses think about recurring revenue and long‑term support. Trinnov has been designing around

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

these principles for decades, long before we became a tradeshow talking point, and at ISE2026 we will be more visible than ever across the industry. Scalability: Follow the Client, Not the Hardware For most of the industry’s history, ‘scalable’ home cinema was more wishful thinking than reality. You designed to a fixed spec and when the client later wanted more it often meant new hardware, extra rack space and sometimes a full rethink of the room. That model is starting to look dated. In 2026, the expectation is that scalability is baked in, not bolted on. Several forces are pushing us in this direction. Immersive layouts are more demanding. Clients are bolder. Seating plans and screens change, and wider images call for broader, deeper sound fields. Rooms that begin life as 5.1 quietly grow into 9.1.6, 11.8.8 or beyond. Installers are designing for that evolution from the outset, building cinemas in phases instead of assuming everything will be decided on day one.

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS

Trinnov technology can be experienced at Pulse Cinemas HQ as well as at ISE 2026

Scalable DSP platforms are a direct response. Rather than lock the system to a single channel count, they let you add capacity in small, manageable steps, often via software or licence keys instead of new chassis. Trinnov’s AltitudeCI already leads the way: starting at eight channels, it can be expanded to 32 via online activation and is designed to stretch to 64‑channel configurations for bigger rooms. The important point is not any one product but the direction of travel. AV processors are becoming elastic infrastructure rather than fixed gear. They are expected to flex with changing rooms, budgets and expectations. In that context, scalability stops being a ‘nice extra’ and becomes part of the essential toolkit for modern cinema design. Serviceability: Change How Systems Live If scalability shapes how systems grow, serviceability shapes how they live day to day. It is one of the most quietly disruptive shifts you are likely to see at ISE 2026. New residential systems are increasingly designed with long‑term, remote management assumed from the start. Clients expect updates, tuning and fixes to happen with minimal disruption. Integrators, for their part, know that a model based on rolling trucks for every issue is hard to sustain. Tools that used to feel specialist, such as remote diagnostics, cloud configuration, online firmware activation and off‑site calibration, are edging towards standard practice. That has a knock‑on effect on the business side: fewer ad‑hoc callouts, more predictable support workloads and service contracts that make financial sense instead of being an afterthought. You can see this mindset in the new crop of CI‑oriented processors. AltitudeCI, for instance, ties into Trinnov’s online portal for remote updates, calibration adjustments and licence management, all with long‑term supportability in mind. The broader lesson is clear, though: products that cannot be monitored and maintained remotely are starting to feel old before they are even installed.

essentialinstall.com

/essential-install-mag

Sustainability: Design Longevity as a Spec Sustainability in AV is often reduced to power draw or materials, but just as important is how long a system remains viable. Keeping hardware useful for longer, avoiding unnecessary replacements, and helping systems evolve instead of going straight to landfill is increasingly seen as part of doing things properly. The underlying idea is simple: the most sustainable system is the one that does not need to be replaced. A processor that can grow through software, improve with updates, and be serviced remotely avoids the financial and environmental costs of premature turnover. This is where scalability and serviceability reinforce each other. If you can add channels, unlock features and solve problems without ripping out kit, the lifecycle stretches, and the footprint shrinks. Trinnov designed AltitudeCI with that in mind. Its streamlined hardware, fewer internal boards, easier access and better serviceability are there for performance, but also for longevity. Coupled with ongoing software development and remote optimisation, it shows how sustainability is becoming a design outcome rather than a marketing line. Similar approaches are popping up across the sector: modular hardware, software‑first upgrade paths and engineering decisions that consider the whole lifecycle. Sustainability, in that sense, is not a standalone trend; it is what you get when products are built to last, adjust, and remain useful.

Trinnov’s AltitudeCI, debuting at ISE 2026, sits squarely in that camp. It reflects a broader shift towards flexible, service‑first, lifecycle‑aware architectures. We designed it with the expectation that great home cinema now delivers more than impressive immersion and bass; it also delivers durability, adaptability and a more responsible use of resources. Visitors will see that flexibility in action across the show. Adeo Group’s theatre at stand 2J300 will feature an 11.8.8 cinema running entirely over Dante, using AltitudeCI to show how a fully networked processor can simplify installation, keep options open and leave room for future expansion. The same platform will also drive partner demonstrations with Alcons Audio (7G500), underlining how interoperability and scalability can play nicely with very different speaker philosophies. As the halls in Barcelona open next month, expect many of the most interesting systems and conversations around them to circle back to those three Ss. How well a product scales, how easily it can be supported, and how long it is designed to last will say as much about its quality as any headline spec sheet. Pulse Cinemas pulsecinemas.com

WHERE THE INDUSTRY GOES NEXT

With scalability, serviceability and sustainability increasingly shaping thinking around AV processing, the next few years are likely to change how integrators approach projects. Hardware still matters, but more as a platform than a finished statement. The systems that stand out will be the ones that grow gracefully, run efficiently and stick around long enough to justify the investment on both performance and environmental grounds.

52 JANUARY 2026

across consumer and professional audio infrastructures. This ‘best of both worlds’ architecture enables integration with Dolby Atmos and DCI servers via AES67, while managing output through Dante without the need for external converters. AltitudeCI brings Trinnov performance within reach for a wider range of premium installations, introducing a modular licensing model that allows integrators to specify channel count in two-channel increments. AltitudeCI is available in configurations from 8 to 32 channels, with a custom 64-channel version arriving later in 2026. Upgrades can be activated remotely via Trinnov’s extranet, maximising long-term flexibility. Onboard are proven Trinnov technologies such as Optimizer, WaveForming and Remapping. The streamlined 2RU chassis includes eight analogue outputs, ideal for active subwoofer WaveForming applications or 7.1 systems. HDMI support (4 in, 2 out) ensures compatibility with matrix-based video systems. AltitudeCI also has three independently configurable Ethernet ports, including two with SFP cages, supporting robust network architectures with separated or redundant control, audio and service traffic. A newly redesigned Altitude user interface features a guided calibration workflow, making Trinnov’s tuning tools more user-friendly while preserving expert-level control.

ESSENTIAL SMART AND CONNECTED SECURITY

EMBRACING THE MULTI-VERSE! Michael Short, VP of Marketing Operations and Residential, Crestron looks at security use cases for AV-over-IP with a multi-view feature. For many consumers, one of the ways they were introduced to smart-home technology was the video doorbell. Digital locks also experienced growth around the same time, and ‘access control’ became a more prominent term in the lexicon. The security industry – long separated from other home technology segments such as AV – slowly became more absorbed into the universe of the connected home. Those video doorbells were something of a game-changer. Seeing who was at the front step via a mobile device was a revelation for many homeowners, but the DIY off-the-shelf solutions could be slow and clunky. Those looking for a more responsive and reliable solution began to look for better products – ones that could be integrated into whole-home systems by professionals. Enter the networked world of the smart home in 2025, and the way homeowners see and interact with their security systems on a daily basis has evolved into something remarkable. Offerings such as Crestron DM NVX AV-overIP systems with features like Multiview can provide strong, practical examples of how an integrated system can make security feel more intuitive and usable.

66 JANUARY 2026

Multiview is a feature we’ve added to our DM NVX 384 encoder/decoder – our encoder/decoder that boasts HDMI and USB-C connectivity, 4x1 input switching, support for 5K resolution displays, enterprisegrade security and Pixel Perfect Processing technology, which provides flawless video transport in all applications at incredibly low latency. Multiview allows the configuration of up to six sources in fixed layouts and the flexibility and scalability of 18 compositions. That means a homeowner can configure all manner of sources, including CCTVs, in a way that makes sense for their individual needs – and every feed will be delivered in real-time at high resolutions, vital for any security system.

THE USE CASES

Multiview enables homeowners to view all their cameras on a single display – whether it’s a TV, touchscreen, or dedicated monitor. Instead of bouncing between apps or screens, they can just glance up and get a full view of their property. This works especially well in homes with larger footprints or multiple entry points, where context is particularly important. Another example could be PictureinPicture camera popups that can be programmed

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

to appear on a display as the homeowner is watching TV. If someone walks up to the front door or there’s motion in the driveway, the system can automatically overlay that camera feed without interrupting the content they’re watching. It’s an easy, low-friction way to stay aware without ever having to pick up a phone. A third use case could be tied to alarms or events. When an alarm sounds, the system can push relevant camera feeds to every TV in the home via the AV-over-IP network. That way, no matter what room someone is in, they’ll immediately get visual context. This could help reduce confusion during stressful moments and make the response feel more controlled and effective. There are also smaller day-to-day examples. A gate opening could automatically bring up a camera on a kitchen display. A package delivery could trigger a Multiview layout on the living room TV. All of this ties back to the idea that smart security isn’t just about sensors and alarms – it’s about giving people real-time visibility in the places they actually use every day. A DM NVX AV-over-IP solution that’s equipped with Multiview helps bring that into the home in a way that’s natural, flexible, and easy for them to understand at a glance.

ESSENTIAL SMART AND CONNECTED SECURITY

Miguel Fornes, cybersecurity expert at Surfshark

THERE’S SOMEBODY AT THE DOOR! Smart AI security cameras can become a spying tool for hackers, argues cybersecurity specialist Surfshark after the release of a new study posted on the brand’s website. The study reveals that AI capabilities in smart security cameras pose potential privacy risks that many users are unaware of. Here, the brand lays out its argument. Beyond video capture and alerts, many popular devices now include smart facial recognition and vehicle detection, raising the stakes for biometric and metadata exposure for camera owners and their neighbours. In addition, despite claims of enhanced safety, most camera companion apps gather additional user data unrelated to core camera functionality. Miguel Fornes, cybersecurity expert at Surfshark, warns that opaque data collection can turn safety tools into potential privacy hazards. “Imagine that suddenly the most personal and intimate part of life – home – is available to unknown individuals, with no known security controls to protect the recordings. The central risk isn’t only the capture. When people can’t meaningfully opt in or out and are not informed about where their biometric data is stored, what additional data points are being collected, and with whom it’s shared, you’ve created a privacy hazard. Scanning faces or car plates of neighbours – especially without explicit consent – should be treated as a major privacy concern if not a breach of privacy regulations.” Amazon Ring has recently been criticised by privacy watchdogs over its ‘Familiar Faces’ feature, which claims to identify people captured on camera. This particular case raised concerns about consent and the handling of biometric data. As these AI features become more prevalent, particularly facial recognition, manufacturers must navigate increasingly complex global privacy regulations. Facial recognition features are strictly regulated in the EU and UK, with high privacy standards enforced by the

essentialinstall.com

/essential-install-mag

GDPR. By contrast, frameworks in the US, Canada and Australia are less comprehensive and vary by jurisdiction. According to Miguel, even when the law allows it, people often overlook the fact that in order to enable these smart features, AI cameras need to constantly ship data back to the manufacturer’s servers. “It’s not just recordings or snapshots. Cameras’ companion apps may be siphoning additional data points – including location, device IDs, contact information, usage patterns, and even biometrics – creating a parallel surveillance stream that can amplify the damage of any breach. “Once a smart camera has a known vulnerability, bad actors can silently take control – turning it into a live feed that spies on you and even your neighbours. For such attackers, highly sophisticated skills are not even necessary; there are numerous readily available platforms that literally list compromised webcams, allowing anyone to break in.”

INFORMATION GATHERED BY AI CAMERA MAKERS

Among the eight leading brands analysed in Surfshark’s study, six offer AI-powered facial recognition, seven provide smart vehicle detection, and all of them feature person detection and intelligent alerts. Despite claims of enhanced safety, most popular models require companion apps for setup, notifications and cloud storage – apps that often collect additional information unrelated to core camera functionality.

@Install_mag

/Essentialinstall

The study found that Amazon Ring’s companion app was the most data-hungry, collecting 15 unique data types linked to the user, followed by Google Nest with 14. Arlo, SimpliSafe and Vivint each collected 11, Frontpoint collected 10 and ADT collected nine. The Amazon Ring ecosystem collects far more than biometrics, including location, device or user ID, email address, name, phone number, photos or videos, physical address, product interaction, purchase history and other data types. Notably, Amazon’s camera app groups 10 data types under a vague ‘Other Purposes’ category, leaving the reason for collecting these data points unclear in several cases. The disclosed advertising-related data practices varied widely among the analysed apps. Arlo stands out by collecting and sharing device IDs specifically for third-party advertising and by gathering more data types for developer advertising than any competitor, with five data types collected. Vivint and Google Nest each collect four data types for developer advertising, SimpliSafe collects three and Amazon Ring and ADT each collect one. TP-Link, while being the most privacyfriendly among the security cameras in Surfshark’s analysis, also offers the option to connect to third-party services. While this feature is disabled by default, enabling it can reduce device security and increase privacy risks. Generally, camera manufacturers recommend using the native camera ecosystem and avoiding third-party connections unless you thoroughly understand the potential risks associated with them.

ESSENTIAL SMART AND CONNECTED SECURITY

THE PROFESSIONALS!

Reliability, connectivity and integration: Professional-grade security for the smart home. Ian Moore, Head of Technical at HKC, explores the options. The smart home market has expanded at remarkable speed, with an abundance of connected devices now shaping how homeowners interact with their living spaces. Cameras, lighting systems, voice assistants and DIY alarm kits have created a culture of convenience, automation and app-led control. Despite the appeal of these products, reliability is still the foundation of effective security. If a system does not perform consistently, if it fails at a critical moment or behaves unpredictably, then its connected features quickly lose their value. For professional installers, reliability is not a desirable characteristic but a fundamental

requirement. A security system must operate accurately and continuously, meeting the standards expected of a life-safety technology rather than a lifestyle accessory. This is where professional-grade systems continue to set themselves apart from consumer devices. While DIY technology is designed to be simple and accessible, it often lacks the resilience, battery backup, anti-tamper protection and compliance assurances that installers and homeowners depend upon. Professional systems are built to withstand interference, maintain communication during outages and provide long-term stability that supports customer confidence. As

There is no substitute for the skills of a pro installer

70 JANUARY 2026

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

homes become more connected, that need for reliability only increases, because every additional integration point introduces the potential for disruption if the underlying system is not robust.

SECURE CONNECTIVITY

The shift toward IP-based signalling, cloud platforms and multipath communication has transformed the functionality of intruder alarm systems. Connectivity now determines how effectively an alarm communicates, how quickly events are processed and how efficiently systems can be installed and maintained. With remote diagnostics, real-time updates, app-based controls and seamless communication between devices, connectivity is no longer a secondary consideration, it is the backbone of system performance. This expanded capability brings with it a heightened responsibility to secure every data path. Modern alarms must ensure encrypted communication, secure firmware updates and strict authentication, because risks have evolved alongside the technology. Installers need reliable hardware that can cope with challenging environments, from poor signal areas to properties with dense building materials that can obstruct wireless communication. Professional-grade systems support multiple communication channels, allowing them to maintain operation even if one network becomes unavailable; this resilience has become essential to maintaining customer trust.

ESSENTIAL SMART AND CONNECTED SECURITY

PROFESSIONAL SYSTEMS VS DIY

Cloud platforms play a major role too, as they provide a secure channel through which installers can monitor system health, review event logs, adjust settings and carry out updates without the need for an on-site visit. The result is a system that is not only connected but also responsive, adaptable and far easier to manage across its full lifecycle.

INTEGRATION AND THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL INSTALLER

Integration has become the defining feature of the modern smart home. Homeowners expect a cohesive experience rather than a series of disconnected apps. They want their alarm to work in harmony with door locks, cameras, lighting and even their home automation hub, all controlled through interfaces that feel intuitive and familiar.

essentialinstall.com

/essential-install-mag

This expectation has shifted the role of the installer significantly. They are now responsible not only for protecting a property but also for designing a connected ecosystem that behaves intelligently and reliably. Professional-grade security platforms make this possible by offering tested, secure and predictable integration pathways. Unlike consumer ecosystems, which often rely on loosely managed third-party systems, professional solutions are designed for structured, dependable interoperability. The installer becomes the central figure who ensures that automations work correctly, that devices communicate without issue and that security remains uncompromised even as convenience features expand. As the smart home becomes more complex, the value of this expertise grows, reinforcing that installers are not simply engineers but technology consultants, guiding homeowners through an increasingly complex landscape.

@Install_mag

/Essentialinstall

Although DIY systems have raised general awareness of security technology, they also illustrate the limitations of consumergrade solutions. A video doorbell or off-the-shelf camera may be convenient, but it cannot replace a certified alarm system designed to detect threats accurately, withstand tampering or respond intelligently across multiple zones. When an incident occurs, the difference between consumer hardware and a professionally installed, professionally supported alarm becomes immediately apparent. Professional systems deliver consistency, compliance, long-term support and a level of resilience that consumer devices rarely match. They are built for critical situations rather than casual monitoring, and that distinction remains one of the strongest reasons homeowners continue to seek professional advice, even in a market filled with DIY options.

CLOUD TECHNOLOGY AND RECURRING REVENUE The evolution of cloud-connected alarm systems has introduced one of the most significant shifts in the installer business model: the move towards recurring revenue. Traditionally, the installation marked the end of the relationship between installer and customer. Today, cloud platforms allow installers to provide ongoing support through maintenance plans, app access, remote monitoring and automatic system updates. Customers, now familiar with subscription models across many other parts of daily life, increasingly expect this type of continuous service. For installers, recurring revenue creates business stability, smoother cash flow and stronger long-term engagement with customers. Instead of relying exclusively on new installations, they can build sustainable, serviceled offerings that enhance the user experience while creating predictable monthly income. The model benefits both parties, reducing the need for callouts, improving system performance and giving homeowners greater peace of mind. As smart homes continue to evolve, the importance of reliability, secure connectivity and integration increases. Professional-grade systems remain central to delivering the performance, protection and peace of mind that homeowners expect. For installers, the opportunity lies in positioning themselves as partners in this connected journey, combining robust engineering with service-led business models that make security not just a product, but an ongoing experience.

ESSENTIAL SMART AND CONNECTED SECURITY

SECURE BY DESIGN: CORE PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CYBERSECURITY As digital systems become ever more deeply embedded in buildings, cities and critical infrastructure, cybersecurity has shifted decisively from a technical afterthought to a core leadership responsibility. Petr Kosek, Cybersecurity Manager at 2N, unlocks some insight. What was once viewed as an IT issue is now a strategic concern that directly affects safety, resilience and operational continuity across multiple sectors. According to recent findings at 2N, the scale of today’s cybersecurity challenge is unprecedented. By 2027, an estimated 29 billion IoT devices will be in operation worldwide, dramatically increasing the number of potential entry points for malicious activity. At the same time, global cybercrime damages reached approximately $10 trillion in 2025, underlining both the sophistication and the financial impact of modern cyber threats. In 2023 alone, more than 1.5 billion cyberattacks targeted IoT devices. This serves as clear evidence that connected systems, including access control platforms and wider building technologies, are increasingly under threat. As these systems become more interconnected and more critical to daily operations, the consequences of successful attacks extend well beyond data loss. These figures underscore a critical reality: cybersecurity is no longer just about protecting information. It is about safeguarding trust, maintaining continuity of service and protecting physical environments. In smart buildings and critical infrastructure, a digital breach can quickly translate into real-world disruption.

74 JANUARY 2026

THE HUMAN FACTOR

Despite rapid technological advances, human behaviour remains the most significant vulnerability in cybersecurity. Studies consistently show that up to 95% of data breaches involve human error in some form. Weak or reused passwords, susceptibility to social engineering and phishing attacks, more than 3.4 billion of which are sent daily, continue to open doors for attackers. Effective cybersecurity leadership therefore begins with culture rather than technology alone. Awareness, accountability and clearly defined processes are just as important as firewalls and encryption. Organisations that treat cybersecurity as a shared responsibility across the business, rather than a problem owned solely by IT teams, are far better positioned to manage risk and respond effectively when incidents occur. One of the most important lessons emerging from the industry is the value of a secure-by-design approach. Rather than adding protective measures after systems are deployed, it is essential to embed cybersecurity into every stage of development. This includes initial risk assessment, system design, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance throughout the product lifecycle.

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

TRANSPARENCY AND ZERO TRUST

Another hallmark of modern cybersecurity is transparency. At 2N, there is a growing focus on adopting open vulnerability management processes that allow partners and customers to report security issues responsibly and efficiently. This approach encourages faster remediation and builds confidence across the wider ecosystem. Participation in international initiatives such as the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) programme reflects a commitment to collective defence rather than secrecy. Sharing information about vulnerabilities helps raise overall standards and reduces the likelihood of the same weaknesses being exploited repeatedly across different systems. Technology alone cannot solve the cybersecurity challenge. Education plays a critical role, both internally and across the broader market. Regular software updates, clear communication from technology providers and informed procurement decisions all contribute to reducing exposure and improving resilience. Increasingly, principles such as Zero Trust, which assume that no device or user should be trusted by default, are becoming central to effective security strategies. Just as important is collaboration. Manufacturers, integrators, facility managers and end-users must work together to align expectations, define responsibilities and create security frameworks that are robust, practical and sustainable.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY

STEREO IS BETTER THAN SURROUND SOUND! Informed personal preference should be a big part of system building. Every now and then I find myself writing a headline designed to raise a few eyebrows, and this one certainly will. “Stereo is better than surround sound” is not a statement of technical fact or a dismissal of the extraordinary work installers do with immersive audio. Instead, it is a personal argument born from experience, preference and budget, and one that I think applies to more homeowners than we often admit. It comes down to a simple idea: the system that best suits the customer, their space and their lifestyle is the system they should have, not the system the industry thinks they ought to want. I love watching films, music documentaries and live concert recordings. I also love listening to music in a way that feels natural, engaging and emotionally familiar. For me, the answer to this collection of priorities has always been stereo. More specifically, 2.1. That choice is not driven by technical limitations or a lack of enthusiasm for multichannel sound. Far from it. A well-executed surround sound system can be breathtaking. It remains the backbone of home cinema design for very good reasons. But my own space, my own habits and my own listening preferences all point firmly towards stereo as the better all-round solution. Part of this comes from how I grew up consuming media. Stereo was the language of sound in the home. It shaped my expectations and taught my ears how a mix should feel. Even

78 JANUARY 2026

now, when switching between platforms, content types and formats, stereo feels consistent, balanced and grounded. It delivers an experience that works just as well for a late-night film as it does for a Sunday afternoon playlist. I find that the stereo image anchors me in a way that surround sometimes does not, particularly when I am hopping between broadcasters, streaming services and apps, all with their own loudness quirks and format variations. Then there is the practical side. Our room could support a surround system. A good installer could design a superb 5.1 or larger layout without breaking a sweat. But with the budget we had set for this space, the choice became clear. We could stretch the funds across more speakers or invest more heavily in fewer but better loudspeakers. We chose the latter and I am convinced it was the right decision. I suspect many installers have seen households facing the same question. We also recently invested in a new amp, the excellent TDAI-2210 from Lyngdorf Audio. Part of a new breed of compact, powerful amps and receivers that are perfect for systems like these. Whilst many of these amps are capable of doing far more than I will ask it to channel-wise, however the investment is definitely audible and also noticeable in upgraded control and calibration. So more modest stereo or 2.1 systems like mine are available for upgrade, not just the larger multiple channel products.

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

This is the heart of the point I want to make. As an industry, we are sometimes guilty of assuming that bigger, broader and, more immersive, automatically translates to better. Most of the time, surround sound is indeed the correct recommendation. But not always. There are rooms, budgets and lifestyles where stereo is still king, delivering a cohesive and enjoyable experience across a wider mix of content. Customers should not feel that they are stepping down by choosing fewer channels. They are simply choosing what makes the most sense for them. Great installation work is not about selling the most complex specification. It is about understanding people. Their habits. Their daily patterns. Their preferences. Their spaces. It is about listening before designing. A stereo system built around high quality, well-positioned loudspeakers and a considered subwoofer integration can offer astonishing performance for films, music and general viewing. For many rooms and many homeowners, it might just be the optimum balance of cost, simplicity and joy. So yes, the headline is deliberately bold. Surround sound remains essential in our sector, and rightly so. But stereo has never stopped being relevant. In some homes and for some audiences, it is still the best answer. The key is not whether it is two channels, or five, or more. The key is whether the system fits the person who will live with it every day.

ESSENTIAL SUPER-SIZED AND INTEGRATED TVs

SUPER-SIZE ME! LARGE FORMAT SCREENS ARE ON THE MARCH Phil Clark, Retail Business Development Manager, LG, examines the shifting commercial sands in the world of super-sized displays. The rise of supersized screens has created a noticeable shift, impacting how modern spaces are designed and used. Whether you walk into a workplace, a university, a hotel lobby or a flagship retail store, the trend is unmistakable: displays are getting bigger. Screens of 100in and above, once seen as specialist hardware, are becoming mainstream. The drivers behind this are numerous - the need for greater communication and content requirements and the demand for visual impact and better clarity - which large-format displays deliver. As technology has advanced, audiences have grown accustomed to seeing huge panels in everyday settings and improved resolution and more flexible viewing distances now give customers the confidence to choose screen sizes that once felt excessive. Meanwhile, LED has shifted from a bespoke, modular solution to a far more accessible option, with all-in-one designs simplifying installation. This means that large screens are no longer seen as a ‘nice to have’ or ‘add-ons’ by designers, architects and AV consultants, who are now increasingly planning and designing

essentialinstall.com

/essential-install-mag

spaces with large-sized displays in mind. This has been helped by far less complex installation than the traditional LED solutions. Integrated frames, power and control systems mean installers can approach LED in almost the same way they would a large LCD panel.

FACING THE FUTURE

Historically, installing supersized screens has come with challenges, and ambient light is one of the biggest with these huge displays often placed in bright, open spaces. As the industry is adapting, there is a growing understanding that displays have the potential to shape the atmosphere and identity of a space, and should feel like a natural, considered part of the environment. This potentially huge market has pushed manufacturers to innovate and improve brightness and contrast, which holds up particularly well in naturally lit environments. Customers also need their displays to operate for long hours, often 24/7, especially in retail or transport locations. Commercial-grade LCD and stable, inorganic LED materials help brightness

and colour to remain consistent over time, as does front-access LED servicing From an operational level and to get the most value from these large format displays, they require a clean installation path, reliable data connectivity and simple device management. WebOS platforms can remove the need for external media players, as can tools such as ConnectedCare, which allows for remote monitoring, diagnostics and proactive servicing. Products also need to be compatible with a wide range of CMS platforms to ensure that even the largest displays fit into existing ecosystems without disrupting workflows. Demand for supersized displays is growing across multiple sectors, including in education where circa 100in plus LCD displays provide better visibility in flexible teaching environments. In retail, large-format displays will increasingly become centrepiece elements within experiential store design. Content creators are also shifting toward motion-led, high-resolution storytelling designed specifically for larger screens.

ESSENTIAL SUPER-SIZED AND INTEGRATED TVs

SOWING THE SEEDS OF SUPER-SIZED LOVE Super-sized and high-performance TV specialist C SEED provides some opinion on if the market is shifting towards an expectation and appreciation of larger screen sizes. As display technology continues to advance, the trend towards super-sized screens is increasingly reshaping how architects, interior designers and technology specifiers think about residential environments. Large-format displays are no longer confined to dedicated cinema rooms or commercial settings. Instead, they are becoming a defining feature of contemporary homes, offering highly immersive visual experiences for entertainment, information and lifestyle applications. However, as screen sizes grow, so too do the challenges they introduce. Issues such as physical placement, structural support, cable routing and long-term service access must all be addressed carefully. At the same time, designers must consider how these expansive visual elements coexist with natural light, sightlines, furniture layouts and the overall balance of a space. Preserving spatial harmony while accommodating cutting-edge technology requires early and close coordination across architecture, interior design and AV disciplines. Brightness and durability have also become critical considerations, particularly in living spaces that benefit from large windows, skylights, or open-plan layouts. Displays must remain clearly visible and colour-accurate in varying light conditions without overwhelming the room once content is switched off. This has driven growing interest in high-brightness technologies such as MicroLED and advanced LED systems, which are capable of maintaining contrast and colour fidelity at scale while offering the robustness needed for everyday residential use. For installers and integrators, the display

itself is only part of a much broader ecosystem. Control platforms, audio systems, automated shading, lighting and networked content sources all need to work together seamlessly, ensuring that the screen feels like an intentional part of the home rather than a visually dominant afterthought added late in the project. As the category continues to evolve, the future increasingly points towards adaptable display solutions that balance cinematic scale with architectural subtlety. Homeowners and designers are looking for ways to enjoy large screens without permanently surrendering wall space or allowing technology to dominate the visual language of a room. The goal is to enable big-screen performance to coexist comfortably with furniture, circulation routes and everyday living, delivering impact when required while remaining discreet at other times. C SEED set out to resolve this tension by rethinking the display as a kinetic design object rather than a static wall-mounted fixture. Instead of asking the room to accommodate the screen, the company’s approach allows the screen to adapt to the room. Its latest indoor systems combine precision motion engineering with next-generation MicroLED display technology, enabling large-format screens to unfold, align and disappear with the elegance and intentionality of high-end furniture. When not in use, the display becomes almost invisible, preserving the architectural intent of the space. At the heart of the system is a multisegment display engineered with micron-level panel alignment, active colour calibration,

and sophisticated brightness management designed specifically for daylight-rich environments. A silent, servo-controlled mechanism handles deployment and retraction, while carefully engineered structural damping ensures movement remains smooth, controlled and repeatable over time. This attention to mechanical refinement is as important as image performance, particularly in premium residential settings where noise, vibration, or visual disruption would be unacceptable. Acoustic and aesthetic integration were equally central to the design brief. Furnituregrade finishes, available in a wide range of bespoke interior options, allow the system to complement existing materials and textures. A carefully considered footprint ensures compatibility with seating plans and circulation, allowing the display to sit comfortably in living rooms and penthouses alike, visible only when it is actively enhancing the experience. “We believe the future of big TV solutions is transforming smart furniture,” says C SEED CEO Alexander Swatek. “Technology should appear only when it adds value and vanish when it doesn’t.” By merging cinema-level performance with the logic and craftsmanship of fine furniture, C SEED reframes the role of home AV. Rather than a giant screen fixed to a wall, it becomes a living, adaptable system that respects architecture, simplifies integration, and elevates the room as a whole.

Displays that merge with the architecture offer a compelling concept

ESSENTIAL SUPER-SIZED AND INTEGRATED TVs

SCALING UP THE POSSIBILITIES OF SUPER-SIZED TVS James Drummie, Product Manager at distributor AWE, sizes up the future. For years, the dream of a true home cinema meant a dedicated projector room – a luxury many households simply couldn’t justify. Fast-forward to today and the landscape has changed dramatically. Super-sized TVs, now pushing well beyond the 100in mark, have stepped in to deliver that big-screen, lights-down magic without the need for a separate space. They’re not just changing how we watch; they’re reshaping how we design and experience residential and commercial environments, ushering in an era where immersive viewing can live almost anywhere.

THE BIG PICTURE Many years ago, at a CEDIA Expo, I spoke with a TV representative about some market research their company had conducted. The question was simple: “What size TV do people want?” The reply was even simpler: “As big as they can afford.” I may be paraphrasing – it was almost 20 years ago – but the sentiment has proved remarkably accurate. Demand for larger, more cinematic screens has only climbed and today that trajectory is accelerating as these displays become a realistic, desirable option for an everwider range of clients. It’s not just consumer appetite driving that momentum; manufacturers are investing heavily at the top end of the market. Hisense, for instance, now leads the global 100in TV category and holds the No.2 TV brand ranking worldwide for 2024. Yet as these massive screens become more common, the real challenge – and opportunity – lies in integrating them seamlessly into real-world spaces.

82 JANUARY 2026

DESIGN, PLACEMENT, AND INFRASTRUCTURE CHALLENGES

With great size comes great responsibility. Integrating these displays into real-world environments presents a host of challenges that go far beyond needing a big enough wall. • Structural Demands: Supersized TVs, often weighing over 100kg, require careful planning long before the screen arrives on site. Rooms not originally designed for wall-filling displays may require structural reinforcement or specific mounting solutions that account for both weight and panel dimensions. These projects rely on thorough pre-install surveys and coordination with designers and builders

so that the technology is well integrated to ensure safe, lasting installations. • Power and Heat: Ventilation and heat management are equally important, particularly where the display sits within a media wall or integrated cabinetry. As screens get brighter and more capable, installers must ensure that enclosures do not trap heat or compromise long-term reliability. • Aesthetic Integration: Today’s clients expect more than just a big screen; they want it to blend seamlessly with their interiors. This means flush-mounting, concealed cabling and often, bespoke joinery or architectural features that turn the TV into a design statement.

ESSENTIAL SUPER-SIZED AND INTEGRATED TVs

NAVIGATING THE CHANGE

Installers are at the forefront of a revolution, where success hinges on anticipating and overcoming a range of practical hurdles. The sheer weight of panels exceeding 100kg introduces the need for specialist equipment, and every installation is shaped by factors such as wall type, room layout, and the individual requirements of each client. Achieving seamless integration relies on early collaboration among AV professionals, builders, electricians and designers, ensuring that critical infrastructure, including power supply and ventilation, is in place before the screen arrives. Advances in display technology have brought improved brightness and sophisticated anti-glare features, granting greater freedom in where screens can be placed. Durable panels also now support longer operating hours with minimal degradation, making these installations not just impressive, but reliably resilient too.

TECHNOLOGY IN FOCUS

The latest wave of super-sized TVs is a showcase of technological innovation – available at AWE to help turn ambition into reality. • Hisense MX Series – MicroLED: The 136MX, a huge 136in display, delivers up to 10,000 nits peak brightness, ultrawide colour gamut and Pantone Validated accuracy. Ultra-wide viewing angles and MicroLED anti-glare ensure clear, vibrant visuals from any seat, while VIDAA Voice, Alexa and Google Home integration add intelligent control. • Hisense UXQ Series – RGB MiniLED: Delivering up to 8,000-nit brightness with thousands of RGB local dimming zones for unmatched colour, contrast and precision. Paired with 165Hz panels, Hi-View AI Engine X, Anti-Reflection PRO and Dolby Atmos 6.2.2, this display brings cinematic visuals and immersive sound to any environment.

• Hisense MiniLED X Series: The 110UXNQTUK delivers an impressive 100in display with 10,000-nit brightness and 40,000 local dimming zones, perfect for daylight viewing. Its Dynamic X Display ensures stunning visuals from any angle, while the Hi-View Engine X with AI PQ provides ultra-precise brightness and image processing. CineX Sound with Dolby Atmos 4.1.2 completes the cinematic experience with immersive audio. • Sony C-LED: Sony’s modular MicroLED design enables precise scaling to client requirements and close-viewing suitability with crisp detail and ultra-high contrast. Advanced processing keeps motion smooth, and visuals refined, while bezel-free tiling and lightweight panels make installation far more flexible than their scale suggests at over 200kg. Front-access maintenance and quiet, fanless operation round it out as a smart fit for premium home cinemas and showpiece spaces.

WHERE NEXT? THE FUTURE OF SUPER-SIZED DISPLAYS

The trajectory is clear: screens will continue to get bigger, brighter, and smarter. 116in and 136in models are already available, with modular, bezel-less tiles promising even greater flexibility. Plus, integration with smart home ecosystems, AI-driven features and sustainability considerations are set to define the next wave of innovation. Super-sized and integrated TVs are redefining the possibilities of both home and commercial environments. The challenges are real, but so are the rewards – each installation a chance to shape how people interact with their spaces in ways that weren’t imaginable before. With the right planning, expertise and technology, rooms can be transformed into experiences leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll.

The name ‘Primo Plus’ itself is an homage to Italian heritage – Primo is the Italian word for ‘first’ and it marks the fact that the original Primo was the first product ever designed by Volumio. And ‘Plus’ is the Latin word for ‘more, because this new model offers so much more compared to the first generation Primo.” Volumio volumio.com

WHARFEDALE’S DIAMON TEASERS Wharfedale has launched the Diamond 12i Series. With the price and size of each model identical to the brand’s Diamond 12 equivalent, the Diamond 12i Series comprises five stereo models: three standmount speakers and two floor-standers. Home cinema applications are catered for by a matching centre speaker and an effects speaker; the latter is designed to wall-mount or sit atop the 12.1i or 12.3i speakers to deliver

the height channels in surround sound formats like Dolby Atmos. New finishes and subtle but worthwhile performance upgrades have been applied to every model, triggering a refresh that Wharfedale has named Diamond 12i. Wharfedale has brought these improvements without increasing prices. The outgoing Diamond 12 range offers a choice of four wood-effect finishes: black,

white, walnut and light oak. The Diamond 12i Series replaces all four finishes with three new ones, updated for a fresher, more contemporary feel: Deep Black, Stone Grey and Classic Walnut. With Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau leading the project, the team focused on bass port tuning and airflow control. Their intention was to refine low-frequency performance through extensive empirical testing and listening evaluations, making use of laser interferometry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and anechoic and in-room measurements to assess airflow and pressure in the port structure. This research led to a new bass-reflex port design and revised internal damping, the results of which were confirmed over hundreds of hours of listening tests. This has enabled improved bass clarity and control throughout the range, especially noticeable in real-world environments where space is at a premium. Low frequencies are more articulate, with enhanced transitions between bass and midrange and a more consistent spatial performance, no matter where the speakers are placed. These changes maintain the signature neutrality and transparency of the Diamond 12 Series whilst subtly increasing listener engagement and dynamic flow. Wharfedale wharfedale.co.uk

Steinway Lyngdorf has announced a software update for all Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway & Sons multichannel home cinema processors, introducing Qobuz Connect alongside Pure Audio high-resolution multichannel streaming. The company describes the update as part of its longstanding approach to enhancing existing products with new features while maintaining a focus on delivering the best possible sound quality. The brand has already integrated a wide range of streaming services across its

processors, including Tidal Connect with Dolby Atmos Music, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready. Its Tidal Connect integration enables access to thousands of Dolby Atmos Music albums recorded or remixed in certified Dolby Atmos studios, delivering what the company says is a fully immersive listening experience. The latest update adds Qobuz Connect, a platform chosen by many listeners for its extensive catalogue of high-resolution music, including strong Jazz and Classical selections.

Qobuz provides both streaming and download options. With this addition, Steinway Lyngdorf says its processors are now an ideal choice for customers who want reference-grade performance for both movies and music. A new high-resolution multichannel standard also arrives with Pure Audio Streaming. According to the company, Pure Audio delivers the world’s first lossless, uncompressed and uncompromised immersive audio streaming format. Steinway Lyngdorf is the first manufacturer to integrate Pure Audio Streaming directly via AC Connect, allowing its processors to play high-resolution immersive audio controlled through the Pure Audio app. Users simply select a song, playlist or album within the app to stream directly to the processor. MY GENERATION FOR KRIX MX MODULAR Krix has unveiled a trio of new modular frontwall systems designed to further develop its Real Cinema at Home philosophy. The new MX-30i, MX-40i and upgraded MX-20 Mk2 bring deeper bass, more dynamic impact and greater installation flexibility for medium to large dedicated home cinemas. The left, centre and right modules remain the same but the headline change in the MX-30i and MX-40i is a brand-new infrasonic subwoofer design that extends performance beyond the audible range. It is all about delivering a physical, room-pressurising cinema experience. The new 18in low-frequency driver is engineered for realism allowing the audience to feel the sound as much as hear it. A reversible cabinet design with dual terminals gives maximum flexibility when orienting the subs during installation. The matching height and slim depth make it easy for existing MX customers to upgrade to the new sub modules, providing installers a clear upgrade path to offer customers as well as entice new ones. These changes make the MX-30i and MX-40i particularly attractive for installers looking to deliver true cinema-grade

88 JANUARY 2026

bass without adding complexity behind the screen wall. The MX-20 has long been a favourite for dedicated rooms. The Mk2 version brings upgrades across every front-wall module resulting in higher output, lower distortion and greater control of high-frequency dispersion. The new 12in low-frequency driver (up from 10in) plus a larger 2.5in voice coil for cleaner, more powerful delivery are both present. A move to a Krix constant-directivity horn and one-inch compression driver replacing the earlier dome tweeter and waveguide

deliver greater precision and dynamics. Also included is increased power handling across the LCR modules rising from 500W to 700W RMS and the reversible subwoofer design with dual terminals supports a more flexible installation approach. For installers the Mk2 offers a meaningful step forward in output and refinement without changing the footprint that made the MX-20 so popular. Krix krix.com.au
