BEAUTIFUL BUZZARDS ROAD HOME CINEMA
Cinema Luxe explains how this project took flight and, with close consultation between the team, installer and client, evolved into something far more ambitious than originally planned.
This project was introduced to Cinema Luxe by one of the company’s long-standing installation partners, Indigo Zest.
Darren Barker, Design Director at Cinema Luxe, reveals, “We’ve worked closely with them on numerous high-end cinema installations for mutual clients so there was already a strong foundation of trust and collaboration. What made this project particularly interesting was that the initial design didn’t propose a dedicated cinema. The plans outlined a room adjacent to a large gym, with a sliding partition allowing the gym users to view a large micro-LED screen—essentially turning it into a multi-use media space. A recessed seating pit was included to preserve sightlines from the gym.”
However, Darren explains, “While the idea was innovative, we had immediate concerns about acoustics, light control and the overall performance of both spaces. We felt this incredible property deserved a more focused, impactful solution.”
With this ambition in mind, the team began reworking the layout in 2D, reconfiguring interior walls and ultimately flipping the cinema orientation by 90º.
Darren says, “This allowed us to clearly separate the spaces, re-site the entrance and optimise performance for both the gym and the cinema. The result? Two distinct, purpose-driven spaces with virtually no compromise.”
As with most high-end projects, there were multiple stakeholders involved. One of the key success factors was engaging with the primary decision-makers early, especially because Cinema Luxe were proposing a fundamental shift from the original scheme.
Sinead Kelly, the project’s lead interior designer, was very receptive to the concerns and solutions presented for the space by Cinema Luxe.
Darren continues, “She shared our view that the original layout lacked impact and was incredibly collaborative from the outset. She had a clear vision for a dark, cinematic aesthetic and trusted us to develop the detailed
interior that aligned with her broader design goals.
“That early alignment was critical. Once we demonstrated how the new layout could elevate both the performance and the design, we quickly became an integrated part of the client’s project team alongside Indigo Zest.”
Thanks to this synergy, there were no objections or rounds of revisions— just one meeting, full alignment was achieved and the project moved directly into technical design. It was a model process underlining the value of early collaboration and Cinema Luxe’s ability to offer informed, workable and inspired alternatives.
WORKING THE BRIEF
As the original brief was more of a flexible media space than a dedicated cinema, the Cinema Luxe proposal marked a significant departure. It was crucial that the team took full ownership of the redesign, both architecturally and in terms of M&E coordination.
Darren states, “We pride ourselves on this kind of leadership. It’s often a missing link in the industry—managing architectural changes, services integration and coordination with all trades. In this case, we worked closely with the architect, HVAC contractor and main contractor to align every moving part.
“One major structural change was reconfiguring the original seating pit into a sunken front row—this involved structural work in the basement. We also had very limited ceiling voids to work with, especially around the HVAC. Ultimately, we positioned mechanical units behind the screen’s baffle wall. This required careful planning to ensure both accessibility and acoustic isolation, especially with the front subwoofers positioned nearby.”
The AV integration, on the other hand, was straightforward. Indigo Zest’s organisation and the technical expertise of Artcoustic UK (the speakers chosen for the project) ensured that this element ran smoothly. Acoustic treatments had already been incorporated into the first design pass so, once the layout was finalised, it was a simple matter of refinement to achieve outstanding performance.
Beyond layout and system design, what truly impressed the client was the level of bespoke craftsmanship embedded throughout the room.
Thanks to Cinema Luxe’s in-house fabrication capabilities, the company delivered a host of unique details:
• Custom-designed and fabricated decorative lighting
• Integrated joinery recessed into the fabric wall system
• A sunken seating pit with metal detailing
• A one-of-a-kind mitred marble bar, specially sourced in a flamed and honed finish to prevent projector glare
These bespoke items take more coordination than off-the-shelf solutions but they’re what transform a
great cinema into a truly exceptional one. And because Cinema Luxe is set up for this kind of precision, it can all be delivered without extended lead times.
Darren recounts, “The site team— across all trades—was superb. Their professionalism meant we could install quickly, cleanly and without issues. But the real reason for this seamless delivery lies in the background: tightly coordinated technical design, early collaboration and proactive issue resolution. We believe our consistently smooth delivery is a key reason for our high rate of repeat business.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
The project was largely pain-free due to the strong collaboration between all parties. However, one significant challenge was the projector positioning.
Housed outside the room, hidden behind a bespoke porthole, this arrangement meant the alignment was critical to ensure full image coverage on the screen from every seating position. The solution was modelled extensively but, in the real world, project delivery can often be at the mercy of those final millimetres.
Darren reveals, “We had just 10mm of tolerance to achieve the perfect result and I’m pleased to say our modelling and preparation were spot on. The image landed exactly as planned— sharp, clean and unmasked. As for the room finishing and integration, we were confident throughout. Our design process eliminates uncertainty. We don’t allow ‘maybes’ into our working drawings—we resolve them before they ever reach site.
Ultimately, this is an over-achieving space that hits the brief in every area. It’s visually striking, harmoniously connected to the wider design scheme and delivers exceptional performance.
Darren says, “For us, the most successful projects are the ones where the phone doesn’t ring after handover. No snagging, no issues, no follow-up fixes. Just a room that works and delivers exactly what the client was promised. That’s what happened
here. It’s a calm, comfortable, deeply immersive environment, tailored specifically to the client’s preferences and the property’s character.”
He continues, “For us, the most rewarding aspect is recognition by our peers. In the world of interiors, there are few accolades more respected than the International Design & Architecture Awards by Design et Al. It’s a global celebration judged by over 90,000 accredited architects and interior designers.”
In October 2024, this project was announced as the global winner for Best Cinema. To be selected among the giants of architecture and interior design was a proud and defining moment for Cinema Luxe.
Darren underlines, “We’re a small, independent company but we were
recognised on the world stage for our dedication to detail, performance and collaboration. It also represents something bigger: the growing recognition of the CI industry within the broader design world. Thanks to the work of CEDIA and others, the gap is narrowing. For a company like ours, created specifically to support the CI space, this award felt like a watershed moment.”
This project’s success is ultimately the result of brilliant collaboration— between Cinema Luxe, Indigo Zest, the client, the interior designer and the contractors. Everyone pulled in the same direction to deliver the best possible result.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS
The L-Acoustics Highgate showroom featuring breakthrough HYRISS technology was a chance for Cinema Luxe to underline the company’s abilities in one of the most high-profile showrooms in the industry.
This highly impressive facility has been making a big impact on the home cinema and luxury AV industry ever since its launch last year. Many industry figures, commentators and reviewers have been highly impressed with the room’s abilities to transform into different audio landscapes showcasing the flexibility of HYRISS technology. The Cinema Luxe team relished the challenge of being brought in to be part of this ambitious creation.
Darren Barker, Design Director at Cinema Luxe, explains, “We were approached by L-Acoustics early in the design phase with a concept that needed not only to be brought to life, but engineered specifically for this unique environment. Working directly with Christian Heil, the Founder of L-Acoustics, we helped interpret a brief that was deeply personal to him — the birth of the HYRISS immersive audio system.”
The vision was clear: create a space that reflects L-Acoustics’ heritage and industry-leading reputation in live audio, while translating that ethos into a relatable and luxurious domestic, residential environment. The design language had to mirror the mantra of
‘one space, endless possibilities’ that is at the heart of HYRISS technology, so the team needed to create an attractive, but also adaptable interior that could evolve alongside the technology.
A vital aspect of the project was that the solution needed to be repeatable and scalable, suitable for installation in different rooms across the globe.
Darren explains, “This meant we had to design both for the present and for future iterations, ensuring that the audio infrastructure remained technically precise regardless of room size. We also collaborated with Lynn B, who in conjunction with Christian Heil created the initial mood board for colour and style, on the early visual concept. The aim was to integrate L-Acoustics’ HYRISS branding colour palette in a way that would resonate with potential clients envisioning the system in their own environments and homes.
THE RIGHT PARTNER
For such an important and high-profile project, L-Acoustics took extreme care to ensure they found the right partners for each aspect of the project. The audio
innovator had been exploring options for the space for quite some time and had engaged several different design teams before Cinema Luxe came on board.
Darren reveals, “Once we were introduced, things moved swiftly. I believe what set us apart was our unique, integrated understanding of design, acoustics and construction — all housed within one team.”
This joined-up thinking, alongside rigorous design due diligence and tight project oversight, gives Cinema Luxe clients confidence in a smooth, predictable outcome.
Darren adds, “That’s the same reliability end clients experience from our collaboration with technology partners. On a personal level, the project resonated strongly with us. My business partner Patrick Monahan, our Business Development Manager Zoe Kent, and I all have backgrounds as professional touring musicians, and L-Acoustics was always the non-negotiable sound system on the biggest stadium tours we played. That connection made it an honour to be selected and entrusted with delivering this project.”
THE BRIEF
The original brief was complex and required significant refinement to become buildable.
Darren says, “As with every project, our starting point was to understand the vision alongside the technical parameters of the equipment — in this case, a significant number of speakers (63 speakers and subs integrated within the walls alone) whose exact positioning was critical to the performance required. From there, we developed a modular design adaptable for future rooms. The entire space functions as a huge piece of modular joinery, with repeatable units decoupled from the surrounding structure using neoprene, and adjustable feet to accommodate irregularities. Our in-house joinery and CNC technology allowed us to pre-build components off-site with exacting tolerances, minimising disruption.”
The bespoke nature of the design meant that few companies could deliver the precision and quality required. Darren underlines, “Leveraging our in-house fabrication and finishing capabilities was crucial — from bespoke metal detailing and understanding build tolerances to the specialist gold leaf decoration. Having direct control over these elements ensured the vision was realised to the highest standard.”
The character of the building, a period property located in the heart of
leafy Highgate, and L-Acoustics’ own background needed to be echoed and included in the design.
Darren explains, “We added heritage moulding details inspired by L-Acoustics’ Parisian roots — not just decorative but functional, concealing integrated cable runs essential for installation.
One inspired addition that always impresses with any visit to the site is the ‘digital windows’: flush-mounted vertical screens framed in bespoke metal, enabling 3D-mapped visuals to
complement the immersive audio. This technology brought the ‘one space, endless possibilities’ mantra truly to life, creating a fluid, transformative environment. Acoustics were naturally paramount. The Cinema Luxe team worked closely with L-Acoustics’ R&D in France to ensure the solutions created met the stringent technical standards necessary to achieve the required performance. This collaborative spirit helped deliver a best-in-class, globally significant environment.
MEETING THE CHALLENGE
One of the standout characteristics of this space is the effortless nature of its abilities. Transitioning to different soundscapes feels effortless and natural and never forced.
Darren confirms, “The biggest challenge was making one of the most technically sophisticated rooms feel effortless and free of technology. This subtlety is critical to enabling the mood changes HYRISS offers, with a truly holistic system experience.”
Another major challenge for the team was repeatability and adaptability for different environments. The Highgate facility is a Victorian building with no parallel surfaces and features an original beautiful herringbone
floor that it was necessary to not just preserve, but celebrate. However, the floor varies up to 60mm in places, so Cinema Luxe had to build tolerance into the design to maintain finish quality during installation. The carcassing joinery approach to the room allowed the team to deliver a precise, predictable structure adaptable to the real-world conditions of the space.
GOING THE EXTRA MILE
As well as being a showroom for the company’s abilities, much like a domestic project, the space was very personal to many L-Acoustics team members — from ownership, to R&D, to sales. Being one of the first full realisations of HYRISS, the Cinema
Luxe team needed to stay nimble and adaptable throughout, incorporating technical and acoustic tweaks as the system evolved. At the same time, the team had had to be firm in protecting the design integrity to avoid compromising the overall vision.
Darren emphasises, “This mirrors the complexity of high-end residential projects we handle, where many specialists and stakeholders are involved. As a key contractor in delivering these specialist spaces, it’s our responsibility to ensure all decisions are well-informed and aligned with the goal of delivering a seamless, integrated space.”
Picking out a favourite part of a space that exhibits such a seamless experience is tough, but Darren concludes, “For me, it’s the unique bespoke details that make this room truly exceptional, and how the early clarity of brief and vision translated into a flawless, uncompromising space.
“The quality of finish is exquisite, a direct result of designing from the outset with manufacturing and installation in mind. The client particularly values how the space feels both cutting-edge and welcoming — a perfect showcase for the HYRISS system that embodies L-Acoustics’ heritage and forward-thinking spirit.”
THE HEIGHT OF LUXURY
Darren Barker, Director, Cinema Luxe, gives EI readers the inside story of how this unique company operates in the high-performance home cinema market.
Can you give us an overview of Cinema Luxe?
Cinema Luxe was founded in 2018 by myself and my great friend and longtime collaborator, Patrick Monahan. Our journey started not in interiors, but in music—we were both professional musicians, performing together in some of the world’s largest stadiums, working with Grammy Award-winning producers and recording in legendary studios and mastering suites. Zoe Kent, who toured with us and is now our invaluable Business Support Manager, has been part of the journey from day one.
That deep-rooted passion for music and sound was the spark behind Cinema Luxe. We understood how great audio should feel and we wanted to bring that experience into the home environment—but with the aesthetic standards of luxury interior design.
Alongside my music career, I had spent many years working with leading interior design brands and, since 2010, running my own successful practice focused on high-end interiors. Cinema Luxe was born from the marriage of these two disciplines: a deep love for
audio and a dedication to beautiful, functional design.
Since our inception, we’ve grown organically by delivering exceptional work across the UK and Europe. We’ve built a strong, trusted network of CI integrators, interior designers, developers, and leading audio manufacturers. Today, our team has grown to nine, bringing together top talent across design, manufacturing and installation. Having all these capabilities in-house gives us total control over our projects and ensures the kind of quality our clients expect— and that we demand of ourselves.
What sets Cinema Luxe apart?
At Cinema Luxe, we’ve taken a deliberate and unwavering position: we don’t sell AV equipment. We are purely an interior design and build company, and that distinction is at the heart of our identity. It’s a hard line we will never cross—and it’s one that fosters deep trust and confidence with our network of custom integrators. Rather than competing, we collaborate. We work alongside our CI partners to deliver elevated turnkey
cinema solutions that go far beyond what an AV integrator alone can typically offer. From initial concept design and sales support, through to technical and construction drawings, contractor coordination, and the inhouse manufacture of bespoke joinery, metalwork and upholstery—we take full ownership of the interior delivery.
This approach frees up valuable time and resources for our CI partners, allowing them to focus on their core strength: delivering exceptional AV and technology integration.
What truly sets us apart is the unique blend of experience we bring as designers, contractors and musicians. We understand the importance of protecting the performance potential of the technology being installed. Rather than treating AV as an afterthought, we ensure its ring-fenced and celebrated within the design—resolving the all-toocommon tension between aesthetics and performance.
Ultimately, we act as the perfect bridge between design ambition and technical excellence, coordinating the many moving parts and people involved to deliver a cohesive, predictable and buildable solution.
Buzzards Road is an award winning milestone project for Cinema Luxe working with Indigo Zest
What does a typical project look like for you?
While every project is unique, our process always begins with one critical step: the brief. We believe that taking a brief is an art form in itself—it’s about listening deeply and interpreting a client’s vision, even when they may not fully know how to express it yet. We spend time absorbing their aspirations, understanding the environment and mentally building the concept long before anything is drawn. That earlystage empathy and clarity lay the groundwork for everything that follows. We also know that every integrator we work with has their own way of doing things. Respecting those working habits and integrating seamlessly into a wider project team—be it architects, main contractors, or interior designers— is a big part of our approach. We position ourselves as a true collaborator, not just a supplier.
Conceptually, we work primarily in 3D to help bring our ideas to life. But critically, our designs are always grounded in reality. Buildability is nonnegotiable. In a world where CGIs can be both impressive and misleading, we ensure every concept we present is practical, executable and ready for construction. That’s the advantage of being a design and build contractor— we take full responsibility for the outcome, so every detail we propose is construction-ready from the outset. Once a project moves past the sale, we handle all technical coordination.
Most of our projects involve multiple stakeholders: CI integrators, HVAC specialists, architects, electrical contractors, main contractors and often an overarching interior designer. We take on the responsibility of ensuring that all those moving parts are aligned, so when it comes time to build, everything fits and nothing is left to chance.
That’s where our reputation has really been built—behind the scenes, doing the invisible work that prevents problems before they arise. This rigorous approach also ensures our procurement and manufacturing are accurate and tightly controlled, making the entire process more predictable and less stressful—not just for the client, but for the integrator who’s trusted us with their project and client.
Are there any standout installations you’re especially proud of?
We’re fortunate to have a portfolio we’re genuinely proud of, but two projects stand out as particularly meaningful milestones.
The first is Buzzards Road, a project we delivered in partnership with our friends at IndigoZest. This cinema won the award for Best Global Home Cinema at the prestigious Design Et Al International Design & Architecture Awards. What made this award especially significant was that it’s voted on by over 20,000 of the world’s top architects and interior designers.
Recognition from our peers at that level felt like a real breakout moment—not just for us, but for the wider custom installation industry. These awards are typically won by mainstream architectural practices, so to see a project born from the CI world take the spotlight was a powerful sign of how far our industry has come in recent years.
The second was a deeply personal project for us: the interior design and fit-out of L-Acoustics’ HYRISS facility in Highgate, London. As musicians, L-Acoustics systems were nonnegotiable for us on stage—they’ve always represented the pinnacle of professional audio. So when they approached us in 2023 to take control of the interiors for their new space, it felt like things had come full circle. Beyond the personal connection, the project itself carried a completely unique brief and set of technical requirements. To have understood that brief so clearly and to deliver an uncompromising, unsnaggable finish—it’s something we’re incredibly proud of.
How do you ensure that technology blends seamlessly with design and architecture?
It starts with respecting the technical requirements of the room. Seamless integration of technology and design can’t happen without a deep understanding of both disciplines—and the reality is, there’s almost always
some level of compromise. The key is knowing where to make those compromises without diminishing the performance or the aesthetic.
Our role is to bridge the gap between the architectural design and the technical demands of highperformance AV. That’s only possible through close collaboration with our CI partners and supporting manufacturers, and by drawing on our own in-house expertise in both construction and acoustics. Because we speak both languages—design and AV—we can make smart, informed recommendations that align with the client’s vision while preserving the integrity of the technology.
Ongoing learning is also critical. We operate in an industry that’s incredibly dynamic, and we’re fortunate to benefit from exceptional training—both from manufacturers and organisations like CEDIA. There’s a real thirst for knowledge within the CI community and that commitment to continuous improvement is one of the most encouraging things about the future of our industry.
Are there any AV brands and technologies that you most often work with?
At Cinema Luxe, we are proudly brand agnostic. Since we don’t supply AV equipment ourselves, we don’t make direct product recommendations. Instead, we respect and support the
preferences and established supply chains of our CI partners—it’s their area of expertise and we’re here to complement it, not compete with it.
That said, we maintain strong relationships with a wide range of manufacturers and distributors. This is crucial, as it allows us to engage with them behind the scenes—often on behalf of our integrator partners— to ensure smooth coordination, particularly when it comes to the technical nuances and installation requirements of specific products. Our role is to help deliver the best possible outcome by aligning the design and technical requirements seamlessly.
How do you keep up with new trends and emerging technologies?
Staying ahead of trends in both design and technology requires a combination of proactive research and ongoing collaboration. We constantly monitor the market, reviewing next year’s collections and engaging with fellow design professionals to gauge where the interiors market is heading.
In parallel, we stay closely connected with AV manufacturers and suppliers. By keeping up to date with the latest product developments and emerging technologies, we can ensure that we continue to offer a high level of integrated service to our clients— delivering not just current excellence, but future-forward solutions that align with evolving trends.
The L-Acoustics HYRISS facility underlines how far the company has come
The brief for the Kingswood project called for a modern interpretation of Art Deco, combined with discreet, powerful audio
What opportunities are there currently in the market?
Clients are more informed and designfocused than ever before, with interior aesthetics playing a major role in their decisions. When you combine this with the growing demand in the cinema sector, there’s significant potential in the market right now. However, people still buy from people. Whether it’s us, with our personal approach and professional insight, or the integrators, with their technical expertise, the real power lies in combining these strengths. Together, we offer an incredibly compelling proposition for clients.
Another key opportunity lies in the evolving role of the CI industry, especially in terms of specifying the interior fit-out for cinema rooms. Historically, the interior design aspect of these spaces has been under-valued. If you look at other areas of high-end homes—like kitchens or bespoke joinery—the cost per square foot often exceeds what’s typically specified for a cinema room. These spaces, however, are highly specialised and require unique finishes, acoustic treatment, and significant coordination.
At Cinema Luxe, we’re helping integrators overcome this by giving them the confidence to specify higherend finishes and materials that align with the client’s overall home design. By doing so, they can secure projects with the right clients who are willing to invest in creating a cinema space that’s not just technically advanced, but also beautifully integrated with their home.
How important is aftercare and ongoing service in your client relationships?
Aftercare and ongoing service are paramount—it’s where companies build their long-term reputation. In our case, as partners to CI integrators, it’s not just about delivering a one-off project. It’s about ensuring that the end client receives best-in-class service and support while also maintaining our integrators’ confidence in recommending us as a trusted partner for future projects.
We’ve made this a core priority by dedicating a staff member specifically for office-based support, alongside an employed maintenance operative who is available to address any issues that arise swiftly and professionally. Every project we complete comes with a comprehensive two-year component and labour warranty, and we’re exploring options to expand on this with service contracts and warranty extensions. This is a growing trend in other areas of the home, and we see real value in offering this level of peace of mind to our clients, particularly in the context of larger builds and construction projects.
While there may be less immediate need for on-going service plans within our department of the CI sector compared to the technology, the assurance it provides to clients is invaluable, ensuring they feel supported and confident in the longevity of t heir investment.
What’s next for Cinema Luxe?
We’re continuing to strategically expand by adding the right talent to our team, ensuring we can meet the growing demand and successfully deliver the projects we’ve secured. In addition to this, we’re working on some exciting new product launches, several of which will be showcased at this year’s EI Live!.
Our modular media wall, The Stage and its companion modular acoustic panel, The VIP, are nearing full release and production. We’re also developing a truly unique integrated wall system for our custom builds that combines absorption, diffusion and bass trapping in a sleek, discreet form. This innovation will offer a cuttingedge solution for clients looking for both high performance and refined design.
At Cinema Luxe, we’re always pushing the boundaries of design and construction, and we’re thrilled to share these new developments in the coming months. Ultimately, though, our focus remains on delivering exceptional quality projects—those that are executed with care, attention to detail and love for what we do. We’re also committed to continuing to support our network of partners and driving innovation within the industry.
