’Bots’ Are Back Michael Bay has fun trashing Chicago in ‘Transformers’ sequel By Lori Hoffman

ransformers: Dark of The moon is superior to the last Transformers movie. The plot is reasonably coherent, the action sequences are insanely over-the-top, just like superstar action-meister Michael Bay likes them, and the supporting players actually are engaging — more about them in a moment. Several movies have taken to providing revisionist Cold War history of late and it’s both annoying and amusing; perhaps as someone who lived through the “duck and cover” years I’m more sensitive. First it was X-men: first Class suggesting that mutants helped quell the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now Transformers: Dark of the moon suggests that after astronaut Neil Armstrong took, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” he went looking for a crashed Transformers space ship. In fact the whole USA-Soviet space race was based on finding that ship first. That the real Buzz Aldrin shows up Transformers: Dark of the Moon HH½ Directed by Michael Bay; rated PG-13

IT’S STRAIGHT UP AWESOME!

as myself to confirm this story is just a tad surreal. As for the plot, it is amusing that Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), a national hero, is reduced to desperately looking for a job after college graduation. However, even though Megan Fox was fired from the sequel, Bay has still managed to find yet another gorgeous-but-can’t-act-model (Rose Huntington-Whiteley) to fill in as the super girlfriend, so that he can get in his lascivious T&A shots that so annoyed and humiliated Ms. Fox. Sam’s job search lands him in the mailroom of the company run by John Malkovich, who has found a new career as effective comic relief (red). All is not right, and before long the Transformers war is on again, with traitors both human and robot. Poor Chicago is the main battle ground, looking about as bad as when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow started that fire that brought down the town in 1871. Fans of this mindless, mostly heartless action will no doubt dig what director Bay does best, blow things up real good. Look, I know I’m not the target audience, so I take my pleasure watching the delightfully inventive and quirky
