SPIRIT OF THE SEASON YOU GOT G IFTS FOR YOU R FRIENDS ďż˝ WHAT ABO UT YO U R COMM U NIT Y ďż˝

E

very holiday season, we tend to get caught up in the urge to shower our loved ones with gifts to demonstrate our affection. But let’s face it: As much as we enjoy the quest for the perfect gift, plenty of our (grownup) friends and family value our love itself more than whatever present we choose to symbolize it. So if you find yourself asking that perennial question, “What do I give the person who already has everything? — you might consider making a donation in their name to one of the many worthy charities that work tirelessly all year to make South Jersey a kinder, brighter place to live. Atlantic City Weekly is privileged each week to meet many of those noble nonprofit volunteers at benefit events across the region. Here are 20 whose work you may have seen mentioned in our On the Scene section in 2014.

Access One. www.njaccessone.com. A one-stop resource center that provides affordable/free medical care services to people living with HIV/AIDS in the tri-county area. Access One, Inc. 730 Shore Road. Somers Point, N.J. 08244. 609.927.6662 ext. 6.

AMI Foundation. amifoundation.net. Dedicated to enhancing the level of healthcare for community residents by collaborating with local community groups to support programs that address critical health needs. 72 West Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway, N.J. 08205.

Atlantic City Rescue Mission. acrescuemission.org. Seeks to meet the physical, emotional and other basic needs — through the provision of shelter, clothing, food, counseling, etc. — of the poor and those who

are bound and bruised by addictive lifestyles in Atlantic City and the surrounding communities. Atlantic City Rescue Mission, PO Box 5358, Atlantic City, N.J. 08404. 609.345.5517.

Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City. acbgc.org. Dedicated to providing resources for the development of young people, from all backgrounds, to realize their full potential as responsible, caring, adults. 317 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Atlantic City, NJ. 609.347.2697.

Campus Kitchen Program at Stockton. stockton.edu. Provides meals for families in need, using the university-assisted communityschool model to work with urban school districts. 101 Vera King Farris

or as long as I’ve been covering Atlantic City entertainment — that’s 36 years, if you’re keeping score — I’ve had my own little holiday writing ritual. To give people time to consider their end-of-the-year celebration options and maybe buy some tickets as stocking stuffers, the second column in December has usually been dedicated to a roundup of all the acts that will ring in a new year from the stage of a casino showroom. This year is no exception. Ready? (Don’t blink.) Dec. 31: The Commodores, Tropicana. Don’t go looking for the rest of the list. That’s it — just one act. Although some casinos may have scheduled stars to work private, invitation-only parties for the better bettors, there’s only one headline artist scheduled to perform a public show in Atlantic City on New Year’s Eve. Unless I’m missing something, it’s the smallest number of entertainers ever to wrap up a year since 1978 turned into 1979 and there was just one casino open. During the years when A.C.’s casinos were raking in enough dough to make them seem like factory outlets for the U.S. Mint, there was never any doubt that “name” artists would grace their marquees on New Year’s Eve. Headline entertainment was often used as a loss leader; casinos would willingly pay extra for a big-name act just to have the bragging rights, not really caring whether the artist would recoup their salary at the box office. The casinos didn’t necessarily need the stars to attract gamblers to the slot machines and table games. New Year’s Eve was often the single busiest night of the year; the holiday itself was considered the big star. So bringing in typical headliners like Sammy Davis Jr. or Steve & Eydie or any of the stars of the period was merely expensive window dressing. In 1992, Atlantic City presented a Who’s Who of American entertainment on New Year’s Eve. Ann-Margret played Caesars Atlantic City; Tony Bennett was at the Tropicana; Ray Charles was at Harrah’s Resort; Smokey Robinson was at Trump Taj Mahal; Bobby Vinton played Trump Plaza; The Pointer Sisters were at Bally’s Grand (later to become the Atlantic City Hilton and then the Atlantic Club); Al Martino was at Trump’s Castle (now the Golden Nugget); and, when he still owned Resorts, Merv Griffin presented his nationally televised New Year’s Eve Special featuring many of the artists already performing in Atlantic City that night. Another reason for the casinos to spend money on a night when they could have saved it was to generate water-cooler buzz that would

continue long after year-end revelers had left town. There was something special and exciting when people returned to work and casually told their colleagues about all the stars they saw during their holiday celebration on the Boardwalk. It made Atlantic City seem like the place to be to celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another. Given the precipitous decline in Atlantic City’s gaming revenue since 2007, it’s not a surprise that the casinos have stripped away New Year’s Eve shows. But it may be a mistake. Atlantic City is penned in by casinos to the north (New York/Connecticut), the west (Pennsylvania, including four in the Philadelphia market) and the south (Maryland and Delaware). Unlike Atlantic City, those casinos — the ones that have chipped away at A.C.’s tourist dollars — are easily accessible to travelers along the northeast corridor. Most aren’t too far removed from I-95. In addition to offering pretty much the same games as visitors will find in A.C., the competition has also installed some high-end dining outlets, too. But the one area where those casinos can’t compete with Atlantic City is entertainment. Because gaming taxes in neighboring states can be as high as nearly 60 percent, there’s little margin for a gaming company to spend the big bucks in takes to present a regular program of headline acts. That’s where our town boasts a huge advantage. It’s able to offer its guests the complete destination experience: first-class hotel rooms, gourmet dining, high-end retail shopping, top entertainment, spas and, of course, the chance to try and win at the tables and slots. With four casinos already closed this year and the possibility of a fifth shutting down soon, it’s understandable why the casinos are being very cautious how they spend their money. Yes, they need to book their entertainment wisely, based on supply versus demand and on casino revenue. I get that. But as the old business axiom goes: Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. The year-end holiday offers A.C. a chance to demonstrate why it’s one of the country’s top show towns. The city needs to acknowledge that New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to reinforce the message it’s been trying to spread for several years: that Atlantic City is a destination, not just another American town with gaming. o the trend of toning down traditional nightlife activity this time of year and yielding to more traditional holiday happenings, Haven says “Bah, humbug!” Golden Nugget’s 12,000-square-foot state-of-the-art nightclub is going full blast into holidays with a slate of some of the best DJs and entertainment sorts on the planet. DJ Gusto and fellow S.K.A.M. artist DJ Reach invade Haven Dec. 11 for the MisBeHaven Thursday party, then Chris Devine and S3T1 take over the turntables on Friday night. On Saturday, Dec. 13, S3T1 teams up with British turntable sensation Mark Eteson, a resident at the club Playboy magazine deemed the No. 1 nightclub in America, Hakkasan at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. DJ Eteson also serves as host of the hour-long Hakkasan Nightclub Radio Show every Tuesday night; a show that previews and profiles the latest EDM artists and their music, and achieved the world’s highest-rated nightclub radio show status on iTunes. Eteson was also named Best Rising Star in the EDM world at the 2013 Viva Las Vegas Awards. Coming up on the Dec. 18 MisBeHaven Thursdays Party, famed nightlife photographer and New Jersey-born Kirill Was Here will join S.K.A.M. artist DJ Mr. Mauricio as host of Haven’s inaugural “Chicks and Kicks Party” — a house party with giveaways and contest prizes including comped table service for the group with the best high-fashioned sneakers, a $250 gift card to the individual with the “best kicks,” and table service for the best Champagne facial. There will also be 40-ounce beers and mini kegs on special. On Friday, Dec. 19, partygoers can rage with Disco Fries and DJ Sean Perry, and the weekend wraps up Saturday, Dec. 20, when Dragan Roganović, a Serbian-Australian DJ, remixer and record producer best known as Dirty South, makes his Haven debut. AMA ZIN’ ASIAN LILLIE’S MIXES UP A K ALEIDOSCOPE OF CONTINENTAL FL AVOR S BY FR A N K GA B R I E L

A

s Atlantic City’s casinos have looked to the Pacific Rim for creative inspiration over the years, the city’s dining scene has expanded in scope to include a wide variety of global cuisines. To witness the latest step in that culinary evolution, consider Lillie’s at Golden Nugget. Lillie’s Pan-Asian point of view conveys a kaleidoscopic vision of the world’s largest and most populous continent, from Japanese sushi and Chinese stir-fry to Viet pho bowls and Korean kimchi. And if that’s not enough of a lure, know this, too: The restaurant’s location — a sleek, modern space merging dark woods and soft red lights, slightly elevated just off the casino floor and attached to a small gaming pit —makes for endlessly entertaining people-watching. We began with a Japanese standard, seaweed salad. Lillie’s version was an airy breath of open, undisturbed ocean, doused with just enough soy/ginger marinade to effectively moisten the delectable aquatic greens. Their wispy, mildly briny nature was judiciously heightened by nicely tangy dressing. Next up were a comely, refined duet of star-quality rolls: the house signature “Lillie’s” and another called “Taste of A.C.” Featuring spicy tuna wrapped inside out, accented by avocado and eel sauce, Lillie’s sturdy design provided the luscious, fatty toro ample room to show off. The latter roll, more complex in construct, brought together jumbo lump crabmeat, takuan (pickled daikon), cucumber, ginger, ponzu and spicy eel sauce. The daikon was extraordinarily effective, conveying both chameleon-like complimentary qualities plus a fabulous textural crunch. Both rolls were expertly sectioned, evincing some seriously badass knife skills — not to mention finishing flourishes worthy of a Renaissance artist. Despite this excellence, it was another house signature; a hot appetizer simply called The Nugget, that stole the show this evening. Undersold on the menu as “shrimp, scallops and Asian vegetables tempura fried,” we expected little nuggets of golden goodness. Instead what arrived were three glorious, inch-thick discs, precisely characterized by Lillie’s general manager, Stephen Na, as “a sort of seafood latke.” Crisp, shredded vegetable exteriors gave way to a melodious blend within, awake and alive with ridiculous, amazing flavors. Absolutely one of the premier plates we’ve consumed

this year, this Nugget was also visually creative with bright colors and portioned for sharing. Entrees began with a hefty, serviceable version of classic Mongolian beef. Large strips of meat — tender and well seasoned — were coated in traditional thick brown sauce rich with scallions, onions and lots of wonderful, crunchy Chinese broccoli. Lo mein, for us a proper overall barometer of Chinese cuisine, delivered nicely, with wide, heartier-than-expected noodles reminiscent of buckwheat-based soba. Tossed throughout were various julienned vegetative elements, pleasantly sauced but not swimming in piquant liquid. But those stunning noodles themselves remained the lead player. Like great pasta, they possessed enough al dente bite to not become loose or mushy. That strength also translated into an ability to effectively convey other ingredients, along with sauce. Chef Brian Tsui, formerly of the defunct Atlantic Club’s oceanfront gem Ono, has done a remarkable job crafting and refining the hybrid formula that is Lillie’s. N

Asia Supermarket

Schulson’s shimmery Japanese eatery is a full-on sensory adventure, styled with cinematic indigo hues. The fare is no less exciting — like a tempting Nirvana roll; tuna, yellowtail, salmon, BBQ eel, avocado, cucumber in chili soy paper or the wide ranging robatayaki, slowly-grilled skewers including octopus, short rib, lobster, Kobe beef and trumpet mushrooms.

(Pleasantville) This sprawling market has every Asian ingredient or element on the shelves that you could possibly imagine — and then some. It also features traditional food stalls: one vending prepared meats including ribs and Peking duck, another offering dozens of Chinese buns in both sweet and savory formats.

Tomatoe’s (Margate) Not merely one of Atlantic County’s most consistent restaurants, Tomatoe’s was also first locally to seamlessly fold sushi and sashimi within a broad bill of fare. Try the Pacific roll — shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, Asian pear, wasabi avocado crema — or the Jason, with seared albacore, pickled onions and cucumber, topped with shrimp, avocado and lime sauce. — F.G.

BOND, BATMAN, BOGART THEY ALL BELONG UNDER YOUR TREE BY LORI HOFFMAN

s a film critic, I’ve always loved giving the gift of movies to friends and family during the holiday season. Some are obvious choices — the terrific Guardians of the Galaxy was released this week — but I also love surprising folks with sleeper hits that aren’t as well known, or Blu-Rays with great extras. Here are a few suggestions for holiday gifts that I’d love in my stocking.

Oh — and Frau Blücher! (Young Frankenstein)

trading cards and a photo book from Batman star Adam West. Warner/Fox; $199.70 DVD, $269.97 Blu-ray. Last Embrace (1979) As a young film critic, I embraced this Hitchcock-like thriller starring Roy Scheider and Janet Margolin, an early film from Jonathan Demme. The chase sequence at Niagara Falls is fabulous. List price: $29.95; Amazon $19.33. Under Fire (1983) A terrific political drama set during Nicaragua’s 1979 political upheaval; the reporters covering the story are played by Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy. The Oscar-nominated score by Jerry Goldsmith and guest performer Pat Metheny is one of my all-time favorites,

Name: LONGPORT MEDIA (00LOON); Width: 10 in; Depth: 2.63 in; Color: Black plus three

and the performances are all top notch. This film and The Year of Living Dangerously (Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hunt) were my two favorite films from 1983. Price: $59.98. The Mel Brooks Collection Nine Brooks movies on Bluray: Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, To Be or Not to Be, Spaceballs, Silent Movie, The Twelve Chairs, History of the World: Part 1 and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. List price: $69.99; Amazon $27.49. Best of Bogart Collection Bogie at is best in The African Queen, Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Maltese Falcon. What else do you need? List price: $49.99; Amazon $34.69. ■

Guardians of the Galaxy Fantastically fun sci-fi adventure with engaging comedic overtones and a star-making performance from Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, the leader of a scruffy bunch of reluctant heroes. From Amazon, $9.99 for DVD, $19.99 for 2-disc Blu-Ray. Bond 50 Blu-Ray Fans of 007 will love this collection with the first 22 films in the series (1962-2008) plus bonus features. List price is $299 but available from Amazon for $135.94. Ace in the Hole (1951) Billy Wilder’s cynical masterpiece about a former big city newspaper reporter (Kirk Douglas) who exploits the rescue attempt of a man trapped in a cave to rejuvenate his career. Classic line: “I’ve heard of hardboiled, but you are 20 minutes.” List price: $39.95; Amazon, $26.08. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) This is my favorite Frank Capra film, lovingly restored for the 75th anniversary of the film. A naïve new congressman (Jimmy Stewart) fights corruption in the nation’s capitol. With Jean Arthur. List price: $19.99; Amazon, $12.99. Batman: The Complete Television Series Holy boxed set! The campy 1960s TV series has finally been released. The limited-edition Blu-ray includes all 120 episodes remastered for high-definition on 13 discs. The release also includes retrospective bonus features, a Batmobile replica,
