HEROES AT THE HOLIDAYS This holiday season, the Atlantic City Firefighters Toys for Children initiative provided gifts to local kids in need for the 14th year running. The A.C. Firefighters Local 198 union collects money annually through their Fill the Boot Campaign — which begins each year on Black Friday and continues every weekend till Christmas — then shops for and delivers toys throughout the community. This year, the drive was able to secure an 18-foot-long trailer to help deliver the gifts — which the firefighters designed to look like Santa Claus riding in a fire truck. The fifth annual Elephant Talk Indie Music Awards were held Saturday, Dec. 27, at Le Grand Fromage in A.C., celebrating the best in independent music acts that have performed in Atlantic City during 2014. Among the category winners were Chip Rishell for male vocalist, Nancy Malcun for female vocalist, Rebel Somers (pictured above left) of the band Whiskey Danger Heartache as musician of the year, and the band Why Not as best live act of the year. (Photo: Facebook.com). The next day, chart-topping superstar DJ Tiesto (above right, in center) helped give 2014 an awesome sendoff to a sellout crowd at Borgata’s Event Center. A few fans, pictured with Tiesto above, earned backstage passes to see the Dutch dynamo through the Tiesto Sweepstakes Contest held via Borgata’s Facebook page. (Photo: Borgatanightlife.com)

WILL DO NEXT? BY E D CO N D R A N

I

t wasn’t long ago that Bill Maher, waxing philosophic about the current state of entertainment, suggested we’re at a low point in terms of the wild and unpredictable. “It’s just so safe and sanitized,” the caustic comedian chuckled. “Compare current musicians and comics from now and the ‘70s, and it’s just two different worlds. Few are going out on a limb these days.” He’s obviously not referring to comedy firebrand Katt Williams, who will headline Saturday at Boardwalk Hall, and who’s already twice declared his stand-up career to be over. Thankfully, he was wrong both times. Says the mercurial Williams: “I’m not like everybody else.” Okay, he’s got us there. The 43-year-old Cincinnati native and occasional actor is an honest, unsparing comic who draws from an intense life — one that’s had more than its share of speed bumps. He’s been hit with tax liens, arrested for suspicion of assault; and as far as performing goes, he’s not afraid to mix it up verbally with unruly members of his audience. In fact, some contend that Williams is at his entertaining best when hurling rhetorical blows at misbehaving fans. Veteran comic Bob Saget applauds comics who defend themselves. “If security gets those [hecklers], great,” Saget says. “But it doesn’t always happen. They can ruin your set. Not long ago, a drunken guy in the fourth row was messing with me. Fortunately, security pulled him out of there. But if a guy from the audience crosses the line, it’s great when a comic protects himself. I have nothing but respect for someone like Katt Williams if he’s out there doing what he has to do. The guy has guts.” The slight, sartorially adventurous humorist, who checks in at 5’5”, is a master at relaying his vulnerabilities onstage as well, resulting in displays of volatile brilliance precious few can boast. Williams always opens himself up and lays himself out there, where nothing’s off limits, and in his case, truth is indeed stranger — and always funnier — than fiction. For proof, just YouTube Williams detailing a high-speed chase from what he thought was a mall cop; turns out he was being tailed by an actual police officer. The resulting tale is a guaranteed side-splitter. That’s part of the reason Williams is on another comedic echelon: his range, delivering insightful yet profane rants on everything from presidential-election politics, patriotism and steroid use to South African sprinter Oscar (“Poor Little Tink Tink”) Pistorius, religious freedom and even atheist sex. “You never know what you’ll get when you see me,” he contends. Where else do you get that kind of unpredictability that Bill Maher misses these days? “It’s not the most exciting time for entertainment,” Williams admits. “But whatever. I’m just going to be me. I’ve made mistakes. But I’ve also knocked it out of the park.” N

ts long tenure a testament to its popularity, Planet Rose Karaoke Lounge is kind of the antithesis to the sprawling nightclubs where revelers go to catch the top names in late-night entertainment. Because as Atlantic City’s only bona fide karaoke bar, guests at the compact Planet Rose are the entertainment. Choose your jam from over 10,000 digitally recorded songs — minus the lead vocals — and you’ll hear it played through a concert-quality sound system, assisted by high-def TVs serving as teleprompters in case that second cocktail gets in the way of remembering the second verse to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The intimate, 900-square-foot lounge is tucked into a second-floor corner of The Quarter at Tropicana (right behind the slicker, higher-heeled club Providence). Planet Rose is actually larger than its New York City namesake and forerunner, but it’s similarly designed with more of a living-room motif in mind than a dance club vibe, with a small stage area surrounded by comfortable lounge furniture. A hot spot for bachelorette parties and girls-nightout events, it’s got a private room with cocktail service for up to 25 people; there’s also a selection of specialty packages and bottle service availability. THE YEAR’S TASTIEST DISHES IT WA S A GRE AT IN SOUTH JER SEY RESTAUR ANTS HERE’S WHY, PL ATE BY PL ATE BY FR A N K GA B R I EL

I

f 2014 was any barometer of what to expect in South Jersey’s culinary future, good things lie ahead for local food lovers. Here are the most memorable dishes we ate out in restaurants around the region this year.

APPETIZERS Tequila shrimp bangers at Vagabond (A.C.) Tossed with spicy, crimson sauce, these crunchy decapods prove a fine finger-food complement to Vagabond’s intrepid draught lineup of craft and import brews. The Nugget at Lillie’s (Golden Nugget) Imagine three of the grandest golden-brown potato pancakes you’ve ever encountered, enhanced via an inner dice of scallop and shrimp. Vibrant stripes of tangy ponzu sauce render the plating nothing short of culinary art. Calamari at Sax at The Reeds (Stone Harbor) A remarkable rendition, with large squid rings perched atop pickled peppers, mandoline-cut Vidalias and a chiffonade of mizuna, a potent, peppery green. Tart kaffir lime crema beneath is paired with crisp calamari, gracefully balancing those wildly divergent flavor profiles. (Thursday special)

SALADS Grilled romaine salad at Stella

Meatball and salad at Martorano’s

(Harrah’s) This signature starter is a swaggy, uniquely South Philly anomaly: manly bundles of lightly sauced meat, riding shotgun alongside an outsized bowl of romaine, cucumber, red onion and cherry tomato doused with red wine vinegar and Sicilian olive oil. Yo, indeed.

SOUPS Manhattan clam chowder and lobster bisque at Shuckers (Margate) We’ve enjoyed everything we’ve tried

at this third Liscio family establishment, but were especially taken by these hearty broths, reflective of their island origin.

Tuscan bean, crab and corn chowder at Knife and Fork (A.C.) A Restaurant Week luncheon on a snowy, windswept Friday delivered two steamy, rib-sticking bowls of warmth and comfort.

SANDWICHES

ture for a construct of creamy polenta and baby beans serving as foundation. (Previous menu item) Arctic char at Assaggio (Galloway Twp.) This extraordinary species—kin to salmon but cleaner and milder in taste—comes preciously turbaned atop a crafty cipollini onion puree. Tiny, Italian pearl onions engender a mildly sweet liquid when combined with a whisper of cream, pairing masterfully with fish. (Seasonal special)

Filet mignon at Marie Nicole’s

(Wildwood Crest) An evening’s addition, delectably recited by our server: ten ounces of prime beef, crowned by a house take on crab imperial, surrounded by spokes of pencil-point asparagus. All elements firmly mounted atop a foundation of whipped potatoes, this was timeless, classic Continental cuisine. (Daily special)

Double cheeseburger at WingCraft

Barramundi at the Ebbitt Room

(A.C.) Sourced from NYC’s famed Pat LaFrieda Meats, these lusty patties, adorned simply with American cheese, honored their prestigious provider.

(Cape May) A migratory sea bass native to Australian waters, barramundi is not seen often enough on local menus. This golden filet arrives atop a mosh of sweet, early-summer corn blended with leek and beech mushroom ragout, lightly sauced by grilled tomato vinaigrette. (Seasonal special)

Kobe beef Reuben at Old Homestead (Borgata) Chef Romeo DiBona’s

savvy contribution to November’s “Street Eats” evening of culinary legerdemain was our single favorite dish this year: tender brisket, Asian slaw, Swiss cheese fondue and fry sauce adorned with cool looking, cherry-essenced “koolickes” on artisan bread. It deserves a regular spot on the bill of fare.

PASTA Pappardelle at The Iron Room (A.C.) It starts with Chef Kevin Cronin’s broad, house-made noodles, tossed with brown butter. Pepitas, roasted pumpkin seeds, add crunch and creamy, nutty essences to those fresh pasta ribbons. Airy and supple, this is earnest, enviable northern Italian cuisine.

ENTREES Grilled duck breast at A.C Country Club (Northfield) Fanned slices of suc-

Dulce de Leche mousse at Los Amigos (A.C.) Surprise: It’s actually a cake! This confection is creamy, rich and admirably authentic in flavor.

Various items at Borgata Baking Company (Borgata) Affording sensei

pastry chef Thaddeus DuBois full range to demonstrate his amazing skill set, this delicious new stop at the Borgata’s entryway promises to keep our sweet tooths satisfied for a long, long time.

MISCELLANEOUS Fried chicken livers at Amish Market (Vineland) Tucked away, hidden amongst the other prepared poultry, these crunchy bits are tiny treasures, eating like poor man’s foie. And arrays of other Amish victuals—including two separate butcher shops—make this Landis Avenue market well worth the ride inland. N

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • JANUARY 1 - 8, 2015

(Ventnor) A warm composition of halved romaine, pancetta lardons, chevre, pesto and balsamic. Just the slightest wilt and char on the lettuce’s frilly edges makes for an intelligent dialogue between sweet, salty and sour, plus lovely textural crunch.

In addition to music and basketball, Dutton enjoys surfing and fishing, and he’s always been able to indulge his assorted passions on Seven Mile Island. He admitted he’s probably written half of the material he’s recorded with the waves crashing on Avalon’s beaches providing background rhythm. “I’d say I’ve written about half of all my tunes …down there [in Avalon],” he said. “If there’s no waves [to surf] and no bluefish out there, I’ll be sitting on the front porch strumming my guitar and writing music.” Because he was so consumed by his love for music that he played guitar and harmonica morning, noon and night, he said the neighbors “probably found me annoying.” But since becoming a successful recording artist in 1994 with the release of the band’s debut album, he thinks the locals may find it “cool” now that he’s a bona fide music star. Once he hit on his distinct sound in South Philly, Dutton moved to Boston to continue working as a street musician and

developing his chops. It was there he met drummer Jeffrey Clemens (a/k/a Houseman), who began mentoring Dutton and introduced him to bass player Jimmie Prescott (known as Jimi Jazz). Dutton adopted the stage name G. Love by combining the first letter of his first name with the word “love” because “it sounded cool,” and G. Love & Special Sauce was born. Once they had their style down, success came relatively quickly. “From the time we first rehearsed to when we signed our (recording) contract it was nine months,” Dutton said. The 2014 release of Sugar on musician and longtime G. Love fan Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records marks the first reunion in eight years between the original members of G. Love & Special Sauce. “The goal for the album was to make it really raw and immediate, with live takes and live vocals and everybody playing so that it all comes together in that intangible way,” Dutton told Guitar World magazine just before the album dropped last April. “That’s what our music is all about.” Like most of the band’s albums, Dutton over-wrote the number of songs needed to package the product and sent them to the record label for consideration. Eventually, Dutton, his manager and the label took the original 40 songs Dutton had written for Sugar and pared them down to 16. Some of the music mirrors his life because of the personal emotional upheaval he’d been going through during the making of the recording. “It has kind of a lot of heartbreak tunes, ‘cause I’ve been through this terrible disengagement with the woman that I loved,” he explained. “I was pretty heartbroken, and I was writing a lot about that." ■

arrett Dutton will be the first to admit his success as a musician was the result of a happy accident, a twist of fate where being in the right place at the right time has been paying dividends for more than 20 years. Dutton — known professionally as G. Love — was probably the most unlikely candidate to meld Philadelphia hip-hop lyrics with gut-bucket southern delta blues to create a unique sound in modern music. As front man for the band G. Love & Special Sauce, the sound wasn’t the result of long nights in a recording studio or killing time on a tour bus traveling from one gig to another. “It wasn’t some conscious thing that I formulated in my head, like ‘Oh, hip-hop plus blues equals originality,’” Dutton said during a 2011 Curtain Call interview. “But when I stumbled upon it, I just knew it. I thought nobody could possibly be doing this right now.” Dutton, 42, developed his unique blend of contrasting musical styles as a teenage street musician in his native Philadelphia working the corner of 2nd and Lombard streets. In between street basketball games, where he and one other friend were the only white kids in the otherwise allblack league, a boom box was playing the raw guitar and harmonica-driven blues sound often associated with older black Mississippi musicians. Playing on another boom box was modern hip-hop. Dutton found himself being equally influenced by traditional blues artists and the younger hip-hop performers — especially the Beastie Boys, who broke a racial barrier by becoming the first truly successful white rap stars. “I was on the street one night playing this blues riff on the guitar, and I just started rapping over it at the end,” he recalled. “I was just sitting out there with no one watching me, no one listening to me. But it was a real epiphany.” Dutton, who returns to Borgata’s Music Box this weekend with the two original members of Special Sauce in support of the band’s eighth studio album, Sugar, remembers writing a lot of his early music on the front porch of his mother’s summer home in Avalon, where he spent most of his childhood summers and continues to vacation with his family.
