tlantic City doesn’t have term limits for its mayor. But its mayor certainly does. Just one year into the job — and what a year it’s been — Don Guardian says if voters elect him to a second term as mayor in 2017, he won’t seek a third term under any circumstances. “I need to show people in 2015 and 2016 how we’re really turning around the city, he said during a New Year’s Eve interview. “And I’m going to ask them for a second term, because I really think you need the eight years to make some positive inroads. And that will be it. Under no circumstances would I be mayor after eight years — even, he stresses, if he hasn’t accomplished all his goals in transforming Atlantic City’s gaming-centric focus to that of an allaround destination resort. In that case, the 61-year-old mayor said, “We’ve got to find a successor who’ll follow in my shoes. But that’s still years in the future. Let’s take a few minutes now and look with Mayor Guardian at the state of things as 2015 dawns. CO NTI N U E D O N PAG E >>

lectronic dance music eminence will man the mikes and turntables at MIXX nightclub at Borgata the next two Friday nights. First up, on Jan. 9: DJ Chuckie (born Clyde Sergio Narain) originally hails from the Dutch-settled nation of Suriname on the northeast coast of South America. He’s since made Amsterdam his home base, but is renowned for a relentless world touring schedule that has him on the road for over 300 gigs a year. Chuckie is celebrated for his diverse music sets that fuse EDM with dance classics, rhythm-and-blues, reggae, Latin sounds, and the genre he first fell for as a teen, hip-hop; he’s credited with helping pioneer the popularity of the electro-house offshoot style now called “Dirty Dutch.” In December, Chuckie teamed with the Dutch trio Childsplay to release a four-song dance hall-inspired EP titled Traphall; the record incorporates a hybrid of trap music, a laid-back reggae vibe and Dirty Dutch influences. Then, on Jan. 16: Nervo — twin sisters Mim and Liv Nervo of Australia — make their first return trip to Atlantic City since June. Veterans of the Down Under nightclub scene since their teens, the sisters first garnered recognition as songwriters for other performers, including the lyrics to French EDM superstar David Guetta’s Grammy award-winning hit “When Love Takes Over” for singer Kelly Rowland. They also wrote or co-wrote singles for Ke$ha, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls and others before becoming well-known stars in their own right. N

Mayor Don Guardian at his 2014 inauguration (file photo)

During his first year as mayor, Guardian saw four casinos close and more than 8,000 casino workers join the unemployment roles. That doesn’t include many more who lost their jobs in ancillary businesses that support the gaming industry. When the mayor took office on January 1, 2014, it was already known that the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel’s days were numbered. The closing notice had already been posted, and it closed just 13 days later. What nobody could have predicted is that eight months later and in the space of just two weeks, three more casino hotels — Showboat, Revel and Trump Plaza — would join the Atlantic Club in shutting down, generating a global spate of negative publicity. Guardian said even though it was in dire need of renovations and ranked last in monthly casino revenue report, he didn’t expect Trump Plaza to close in 2014. Nor did he expect the $2.4 billion Revel to go dark, even when it filed for its second bankruptcy in two years. And he certainly didn’t expect to lose Showboat, which was still generating a profit for its owner, Caesars Entertainment. “The Showboat was a shock to me and almost the entire city. If you had told me a year ago that [Showboat would close], I would have told you Showboat’s doing well, the finances are good, it’s a smaller casino, he said. “But [closing Showboat] was a business decision by Caesars Entertainment. Guardian, who remains relentlessly and incurably optimistic about the long-term future of the city, said 2015 is shaping up to be a good year. Or, at the very least, a better year than the one just past. By settling two tax liens against Revel and Trump Entertainment Resorts, and with a $40 million low-interest short-term loan from the state, the city received about $88 million in financial breathing room in December that will carry it well into the new year. Another reason for optimism, the mayor noted, is the purchase of Showboat by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, which will establish an Island Campus and University Park on the property’s 26-acre site. Stockton will operate part of the 1,200-room property as a public hotel with restaurants

and likely some retail outlets while also holding classes in space once occupied by the 125,000-square-foot casino floor. The mayor said the Bass Pro Shops under construction at Tanger Outlets The Walk, which will open around Easter and become a destination-within-a-destination, is also creating a separate 15,000-square-foot boat sales department that will result in additional tax revenue to the city. The Pier Shops at Caesars was recently purchased by Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein; Harrah’s Resort will complete and open a new conference center this year; and other housing and retail projects have been announced. The new additions, Guardian said, should help boost public and investor confidence in Atlantic City, especially in the bond market. If a five-bill package of legislation designed to trim the city’s operating costs and debt is approved by the state Senate and Assembly and signed by Gov. Chris Christie, “it will really put us in a very positive light in 2015, Guardian said. One of those bills calls for the elimination of the Atlantic City Alliance, the public-private marketing agency charged with the responsibility of promoting Atlantic City in particular—and the region in general—through advertising and special events. The ACA’s work in 2014 included two highly successful concerts featuring country star Blake Shelton and Lady Antebellum, each of which drew more than 60,000 to the beach for the free shows. The agency also bankrolled everything from massive July 4th fireworks displays to an international triathlon, a Boardwalk wine tasting, a worldclass sand sculpting competition, offshore powerboat races, a fishing tournament, a volleyball tournament and more. “All of those were home runs for us, Guardian said. But he’s hoping the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will pick up some of the slack if the ACA—which was financed by $30 million annually from the casino industry—disbands. The CRDA recently signed a deal with Live Nation, one of the world’s largest concert promoters, to do as many as 12 to 16 major shows and events in Boardwalk Hall this year. menus are being featured throughout the resort: Highlights include a Saturday beer brunch at Broadway Burger Bar, beerinfused recipes at il Verde, limited baconkissed cocktails and entrees at Fin, and specials on bacon candy at Old Farmer’s Almanac, among others. This, of course, isn’t the first time the universe has brought bacon and beer together. Funky Buddha Brewery makes a “maple bacon coffee porter that is breakfast in a glass — yes, you read the beer description correctly. Rogue does a bacon-infused beer as well, as do several other breweries. But a week-long event featuring all manner of creative bacon dishes and excellent craft beer? That might be a first. Quirky events like this one are becoming more common around Atlantic City, though, as the region broadens its tourism scope to cater to a wider range of interests. And then, of course, there’s craft beer: A.C. is embracing the explosion of independently produced brews that’s

been making its way slowly but surely through American cities over the past few years. The craft market is expected to grow by more than 20 percent in 2015, and there are now over 3,000 breweries operating in America. Atlantic City has fairly quickly established itself as one of South Jersey’s best beer towns. Indeed, that the Tropicana can devote an entire week to celebrating beer along with its good friend bacon is a testament to just how popular the good brews have become. No need to drive home after filling up on beer and bacon, either. During the event week, the Trop is offering packages that include overnight accommodations and a $20 food & beverage credit for just $65. â–

BY ERIC SAN JUAN nd on the eighth day He created bacon, and He looked upon His creation and said it was good. Then He had a beer and rested again, this time with a frothy beer, because when you’ve created something as good as bacon you deserve a break. Visitors to Atlantic City will be able to do much the same Jan. 11–17 as the Tropicana Casino & Resort celebrates its first annual Bacon and Beer Week. According to the Tropicana’s Maria Marques, the event has historically been two distinct theme weeks. Those celebrations were both enjoyable on their own, but you know what they say about two great tastes that taste great together: Each proved to be so popular, the organization has merged them into one big gastrointestinal nightmare of a good time. The week-long event will spread out across the entire Tropicana Casino & Resort, covering two dozen restaurants, 18 bars and lounges, and more. An array of bacon- and beer-related specials and

A FO ODIE’ S 20 1 5 WIS H L IST 7 THINGS WE’RE PR AYING TO SEE ON LO CAL MENUS Turnips. In the last decade, local menus have seen beets become ubiquitous, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts make a comeback, and the elevation of healthful kale in all its crunchy varietals. So what will be the “it” veg of 2015? Kohlrabi? Swiss chard? Rutabaga? We say it’s turnip time. Like most root vegetables, these underground dwellers possess a hidden depth of sweet flavor only achieved through low, slow cooking — as recently savored in the mini “Tokyo turnips” served at Stone Harbor’s excellent Sax at The Reeds of Shelter Haven. Foraged finds. Once upon a time, we walked into the closed, off-season kitchen of esteemed Cape May restaurateur Lucas Manteca — at the time operating his first eatery, Sea Salt, in Stone Harbor — to find him trundling in massive black trash bags laden with freshly-harvested pine cones. He explained that these pungent beauties would be used to flavor grilled proteins — particularly the chef’s signature Brazilian mixed meat platter — and that he would also be collecting seaweed and assorted aquatic detritus from beaches to use similarly with whole fish, in the manner of a traditional New England clam bake. We’d like to see more chefs think outside the box this way, employing indigenous wild herbs, mushrooms, shellfish and plant products from southern N.J.’s fecund, pristine coastal and inland ecosystems. You’ve heard of farm-to-table? Call this forest-to-fork.

A Revel restaurateurs redux. Like Icarus flying too close to the sun, Revel assembled one of the greatest collections of culinary talent to be found on the planet. Names like Michel Richard, Jose Garces, Alain Allegretti, Robert Wiedmaier and Marc Forgione instantly elevated A.C.’s status in the gastronomic realm. We hope to see some of them return once the property’s future shakes out. An A.C. college food marketplace. Easily

Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Stockton’s already got a respected hospitality curriculum at the historic Seaview resort; now, with an A.C. campus, the college will be in the position of helping to reshape neighborhoods surrounding this monolithic former resort. Surely the foot traffic will do wonders for nearby food establishments — hopefully it will also attract food trucks serving famished, matriculating youths.

No more .95s and .99s! Why restaurant owners continue to tag these annoying little add-on cents to prices on their bills of far never fails to confuse and disturb. Do they honestly think we don’t know that trick? Just round it up to the next whole number, please. Customers and servers will both thank you.

Enough chipotle and sriracha — we want harissa and vindaloo. America’s love affair with all things hot and spicy continues unabated, so let’s mainstream of another pair of capsicuminduced blends: the north African condiment harissa and the Indian sauce vindaloo. Harissa, a ground paste whose main ingredients are roasted red peppers, hot chili peppers and spices such as garlic, coriander and caraway, is native to Tunisian and Algerian cuisine and works well with roasts, stews or tagines. Vindaloo, the subcontinent’s answer to Italian fra diavalo, comes in a variety of strengths, ranging from mild to incendiary and is superb in spicy chicken or lamb dishes.

Bitter is the new sweet. This most neglected of the basic flavor profiles has seen a resurgence of interest from daring chefs lately. For an example, check out the Mexican hot chocolate at specialty food retailer Cook’s Corner in Historic Smithville: Combining the potent jolt of naturally bitter cacao with intense heady, cinnamon essences, this is one serious cup of winter warmth. And ideally suited for this week’s impending blast of Arctic air. —FRANK GABRIEL

GARDEN STATE FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEWS 2015 LINEUP FEST FOUNDER DIANE R AVER SCREENS MOVIE ABOUT WORLD PE ACE AT A .C . LIBR ARY BY LO R I H O FFM A N

he Atlantic City Free Public Library continues to showcase the Garden State Film Festival with a second event offered free to the public showcasing the films and individuals behind the festivals. Described as “An Evening with Diane Raver,” the festival’s founder and executive director will first present a screening, then give a preview of the 2015 program and answer audience questions on January 12 from 5:30–7pm. The film, Admissions: A Film for Peace, is a short that stars James Cromwell and thoughtfully explores the causes and consequences of world conflicts. The filmmakers are director Harry Kakatsakis, producer Gavin Behrman and screenwriter John Viscount. “We are delighted to partner again with the Free Public Library to showcase the festival and appreciate their support and hospitality as we engage the community in what we are accomplishing in Atlantic City on behalf of the arts,” says Ms. Raver. “In addition to presenting a world-class international film festival each spring, we are committed to being a year-round presence in our home of Atlantic City.” Back in April Raver talked about the reasons for the film festival’s move to Atlantic City: “It was a natural fit and worked out the way it was supposed to.” The festival has

signed an official agreement for three years, but according to Raver, “We are here for the duration. We have never been happier. Just because we only have a three-year deal doesn’t mean we are going anywhere. We love Atlantic City. The joy of working with professionals has been just delightful. You guys know how to do an event down there. It has been refreshing.” The screening will take place in the main meeting room of the library located at 1 N. Tennessee Ave. A discussion will follow with representatives of the Garden State Film Festival. Free to the public, seating is limited. For more information call Ricky Gerhardt at 609.345.2269 Ext. 3077. The Garden State Film Festival was first envisioned by Raver, a 25-year film industry veteran, and the late Hollywood actor Robert Pastorelli in 2002 and launched the following year. Since 2003, thousands of films have made their public premieres; hundreds of thousands of people from around the world have attended; and the total infusion of cash to local businesses has exceeded $5 million. ■
