nd here we are once again. Every year, the team of folks who put together the Atlantic City Weekly devote our days and nights to noticing what’s what in local entertainment: what’s hot, what’s cool, what’s new, and what’s just plain fun. And then we celebrate the best of it with the annual Atlantic City Weekly Nightlife Awards, where we invite you — our readers, our neighbors, our fellow lovers of life after dark — to weigh in and tell us what you enjoyed the most. Head online to acweekly.com/nightlife-awards before midnight on Dec. 31 and vote for your favorite places: Best Dance Floor! Best Industry Night! Best Singles Scene! Best Karaoke Spot! Then vote for your favorite people: Best DJs! Best Bartenders! Best Local Band! Best Club Dancer! And finish up with your favorite watering holes: Best Beer List! Best Cocktail List! Best Bottle Service! There are many more categories, of course — so hop online and show some love to all your favorites before the new year flips. And on that note: May we all have a safe and peaceful New Year. â–

SAR AI MARIE TOPS SANTA’S ‘NICE’ LIST Seven-year-old EHT resident Sarai Marie Jackson wowed Shore Medical Center’s purchasing and marketing departments during SMC’s recent Locals First Business Fair, in which more than 60 businesses from the area met to discuss ways in which to spur business opportunities and develop partnerships. Sarai, who suffers from a hair-loss condition called alopecia, launched (with her grandmother) the Kissy Face Kollection: handmade head coverings for patients suffering from hair loss. Shore Medical purchased part of the collection and is making the headdresses available at the hospital’s gift shop. Photo submitted: Brian Cahill, Shore Medical Center

3 LAST-MINUTE SUGGESTIONS FOR A CLASSY MEAL ON THE TOWN

ou can still find Atlantic City Weekly’s comprehensive New Year’s Eve guide, published in last week’s issue, available online at acweekly.com. Meanwhile, if you’re more focused on fine dining than on dance-floor debauchery, here are three NYE dinner offerings that promise to make a spectacular evening.

1

Lobster at A.C. Country Club. The pastoral, luxurious Atlantic City Country Club presents an extraordinary culinary repast on New Year’s Eve, including first courses of lobster and roasted butternut squash bisque with saffron and basil; a house signature, old-school classic snapper soup; and the Southern traditional New Year’s favorite, black-eyed pea soup, which is believed to fortify diners for success in the year ahead. Entrees deliver such delicacies as pan-sautéed lobster Francaise finished with white wine, lemon, butter and fresh herbs; pan-roasted Gulf Stream grouper; Parmesan crusted eggplant, olives and roasted peppers; roasted garlic jus or pepper-crusted bone-in Angus prime rib accompanied by Yorkshire pudding. Filet mignon at Renault Winery. Near Atlantic County’s northern perimeter, glamorous Renault Winery offers multiple year-end celebratory options. At 8 p.m. in the Tuscany House Ballroom, a three-course meal features a premium open bar and hors d’oeuvres reception, Winter green salad, filet mignon and chicken duo, chocolate truffle mousse, and a midnight toast of Renault Cold Duck — along with entertainment and dancing for $100 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Or, if you prefer an earlier meal, Renault offers a five-course Twilight event for $55 from 4–7pm in the Renault Gourmet facility, including an appetizer, pasta, salad, choice of entrée and a dessert. Finally, Joseph’s Restaurant’s roster will spotlight favorites from its regular bill of fare plus filet mignon, lobster tail and other chef’s specials, starting at 5 p.m. (More info: www.renaultwinery.com) — F.G.

he Gypsy Bar has been a popular destination since the Borgata opened in 2003. The enticing little venue is fortuitously sited just before the escalators leading up to the Event Center, where it’s well suited to picking up a lot of foot traffic. No run-of-the-mill watering hole, it’s the kind of niche that most first-time, drop-by Borgata concertgoers would probably seek out again on a return trip to the resort — a fun hang whose biggest and bestknown asset is an amazing tequila selection of about 100 brands, ranging from reasonably priced to $275 for a single serving (for 1800 Coleccion, an ultra-aged anejo made in limited quantities). The venue’s bartenders are all certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council and willing to assist all tequila tenderfoots; plus, they offer flights (samplers of three one-ounce snifters) to help patrons gauge what they like in a tequila. There’s also an eclectic cerveza (beer) selection of domestic and imported drafts and bottles, and about 25 specialty cocktails in the $9 to $12 range. Gypsy Bar’s entertainment lineup, meanwhile, represents a revolving slate of the region’s best cover bands — and occasionally acts with a quirky vibe or novelty edge like The Nerds, the Amish Outlaws and Mini Kiss. (Once, when he was still a recognizable name and an offbeat cult hero of sorts, Gypsy Bar hosted William Hung, famous for bludgeoning the Ricky Martin hit “She Bangs” as an American Idol contestant.) The quintet Crazy In Stereo (pictured above) performs Sunday night, Dec. 28, starting 8:30pm, ideally timed for a couple of cold ones before Tiesto takes the Event Center stage at 10pm. Other Gypsy Bar acts performing this weekend include John McNutt (7pm) and The Loop (11pm) on Friday night, Dec. 26, and Ultrafuze (7pm) and the JJ Rupp Band (11pm) on Saturday night, Dec. 27. N

Hip-hop icons Public Enemy will headline Boardwalk Hall’s All-Stars of Hip-Hop in January.

WINTER A&E PREVIEW BOARDWALK HALL LE ADS THE A .C . PACK INTO 2015 WITH TOP HE ADLINE ACTS

W

inter may only be a few days old, but already it’s beginning to look a lot like summer in Atlantic City — especially with the number of shows already booked at historic Boardwalk Hall. The big room on the Boardwalk stands toe to toe with any of the casino venues as far as the caliber of shows and events it’s scheduled during the first quarter of the new year. In fact, with at least 10 events booked from January through March, it’s easily the busiest quarter for the 13,500seat arena since the building — constructed nearly 90 years ago — underwent a $90 million renovation in 2001. The first few weeks of the new year are a perfect example of the diversity of artists and events that the hall’s operator, Global Spectrum, is bringing to Boardwalk Hall either on its own or through outside promoters. The new year will be just a few days old when comedian Katt Williams, the poster champion for the reform of marijuana laws, plays the big stage on Jan. 3. A revue featuring major hip-hop artists including Public Enemy, KRS-One and more is set for Jan. 18, which sets up a back-to-back frame of rock acts whose entries into the music business is separated by three decades: Linkin Park

performs Jan. 23 followed one night later by the legendary Fleetwood Mac, now touring with keyboard player and singer Christine McVie, who’s joining her former bandmates on tour for the first time in 16 years. Meanwhile, Atlantic City’s eight surviving casinos appeared to have adopted a somewhat cautious approach to entertainment during the first quarter of 2015. The number of shows is down from previous years as A.C. adjusts to what business will be like in the new normal, now that there are four fewer Boardwalk casinos than there were this time last year. That said: Although total gaming revenue is down over the corresponding period last year, the casino win is actually up at seven of the eight casinos. Yes, Trump Taj Mahal, which had been on the verge of closing before it was rescued by Carl Icahn, took double-digit hits in its monthly casino win the last several months because gamblers were spooked by talk of the casino shutting down and stayed away. But gaming numbers are up significantly at most of the other properties, with Borgata continuing to dominate the market with a monthly win nearly double its next closest competitor.

Industry experts say with gaming revenue up, entertainment bookings will likely rebound later in the year. Entertainment, of course, is one of the biggest advantages Atlantic City’s gaming halls have over competitors in surrounding states. That’s because unlike in A.C., where casinos pay the state an eight percent tax on most gaming revenue, casino taxes in Pennsylvania and Maryland are so high it makes it financially difficult for those states’ gaming halls to mount any kind of a consistent policy featuring “name” artists. Borgata continues to offer the largest and most demographically diverse lineup, mostly because it has the financial resources to stock its two active venues — the 1,000-seat Music Box and the larger Event Center, which can accommodate nearly 2,500 guests. Borgata mixes its regular artists (Lewis Black, Lisa Lampanelli, Rob Thomas) with newto-the-market acts like impressionist Jeff Tracta, comedian Hannibal Buress and Mike & The Mechanics. Harrah’s Resort began experimenting with Thursday shows this year to jump-start the weekend, and the effort proved successful enough to continue it into 2015. Don’t be surprised if Harrah’s makes a regular habit of midweek entertainment once its new conference center opens in August. And with Icahn now committed to keeping the Trump Taj Mahal open, it’s virtually certain that the casino will resume booking shows into the 5,200-seat Etess Arena and the 1,200-seat Xanadu Theater. Following is the most recent list of bookings for the casinos and Boardwalk Hall. (All shows and events are subject to change.)

The Mechanics. March 14: Pentatonix. March 20–21: Lewis Black. March 28: Sebastian Maniscalco. T

he copious camaraderie and significant shrinkage that come from jumping into frigid water may be surpassed only by the good will toward mankind generated by this weird New Year’s Day tradition called the polar bear plunge. Participation often has a common thread, and the city of Brigantine could serve as a template. On a whim back in 2000, John Hand and a handful of his friends dared each other to dive into the ocean on New Year’s Day. The following year about 75 others joined in on a north-end Brigantine beach. The growing trend continued, and the sensible next step seemed to be turning this often beer-fueled fun into something meaningful and philanthropic. The Brigantine Polar Bears (brigantinepolarbears.com) targeted the Fisher House Foundation (fisherhouse.org) as their beneficiary, and their first year of fundraising netted a few hundred dollars. Last year they wrote a check to Fisher House — an organization providing free or low-cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers — for $75,000. Through things like local and corporate sponsorship, donations and merchandise sales, Brigantine’s contributions to Fisher House has increased year

to year, and the city has become the single largest contributor to Fisher House in the state. The Brigantine Polar Bears would like their 15th annual plunge to be no exception. Here’s a north-to-south breakdown of some of the polar bear plunges in Atlantic City Weekly’s circulation area, and how to get involved.

here’s some good news for South Jersey natives flying through Philadelphia International Airport this holiday season: The food there is noticeably better than it used to be. Vino Volo, for example, is always a solid option. A quick bite at Chickie’s and Pete’s starts off a journey well. And these days, there’s even greater hope than ever before: Terminal F, which offers weary travelers something that’s in preciously short supply throughout the rest of the airport — appealing dining options in a well-thought-out environment. None of them are more attention-grabbing or more stress-reducing than Local Tavern, the relatively new restaurant featuring a menu that celebrity chef Jose Garces consulted on. Upon my first bite of Local’s pulled pork sandwich, it immediately became clear that this was no stereotypical airport meal. It was good food in its own right that just happened to be available in an airport. That sandwich, expertly moistened

by a barbecue sauce perched on the razor’s edge between sweet and tangy—and given kick with fried pickles on top— balanced out my pre-flight psyche like I’d never experienced at PHL before. And the Brussels sprouts, just barely sticky with balsamic, made me feel a way I almost never do at an airport while eating: healthy. Everything you eat at Local, from sides to proper entrees, you order through a clever iPad system; you can customize your order, add items, pay through it and even browse the interwebs. And while some people may push back at the lack of much human contact during the meal, I actually found it to be perfectly suited to the context of the airport. Checking your bags, wending your way through security and dealing with the myriad other headaches of air travel are stressful enough. Being able to retreat into your own world in this wellappointed space is fantastic. N

FOOD & DRI N K FORGET THE CHAMPAGNE: 5 BEERS TO TOAST THE NEW YEAR WITH

T

radition dictates that when the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, you toast in the coming year with a drink of champagne. Well, tradition can take a hike as far as we’re concerned: There is no reason you can’t swap out the bubbly for a well-chosen beer. Here are five brews worth hunting down at the beverage store of your choice.

Allagash Interlude The folks at Allagash add Brettanomyces yeast to lend an earthy character to this vibrant farmhouse ale, then age it in French oak wine barrels. That aging imparts a vinous character that will grab the attention of even your winesnobbiest friends while adding complexity that will delight even the most jaded of beer lovers. Bubbly, zesty, lively, this is a beer worthy of a champagne glass. Long Trail Berliner Weiss If, after a long night of New Year’s Eve partying, you still want to hoist a glass when the ball drops, but don’t want anything that would make the rest of your evening even fuzzier than it already is, effervescent lowalcohol styles like the Berliner Weiss are a great choice — and Vermont’s Long Trail is a good one. At just 3.4 percent alcohol by volume, you won’t have to worry about putting yourself over the top. Even more importantly, this is a tasty, affordable beer that can easily replace your champagne. The carbonation is brisk; the flavor and aroma suggest lemongrass, acidic fruits, and light wheat; the finish is dry and crisp, capped off with a tart, lactic tang at the end.

Cigar City Fight the Power If you really really want to buck tradition, skip both the champagne and the beer and try a cider instead. Ciders are bigger than ever these days, and when you taste efforts like this one from the folks at Cigar City, Florida’s finest craft brewers, you’ll understand why. Fight the Power is a sour apple cider. Golden orange with little in the way of carbonation, it’s a risky pick for toasting — you traditionally toast with the bubbly stuff, after all — but it’s so elegant a drink you won’t mind. Plenty of sour apple in the aroma, while the taste is like crystal clear apple juice with some candied tartness, a hint of grassy Earthiness, and a mildly puckering sour finish.

Boulevard Tank 7 Saison So you’re looking for something brisk, bubbly, and a little bit classy. Saisons fit the bill, and a damn fine one is Tank 7 by the brewers at Boulevard, out of Kansas City. Straw colored with a white head that quickly dissipates, aromas of hay, bananas and grassy fields prepare you for similar tastes, upon which are piled tropical fruit, a touch of sweet cereal, and black pepper. Plenty of citrus and generous carbonation ensure this will grab your attention when you hoist your glass. Victory Golden Monkey You want to meet the real champagne of beers? Pennsylvania brewery Victory produces a stellar beer called Golden Monkey that ticks off every box on the bubbly-esque checklist and then some. This golden Belgianstyle tripel has a light, effervescent body that belies its robust alcohol content. Fruity notes greet your nose in a fragrant bouquet, and the taste reveals a subtle blend of herbal qualities, sweet malts, balancing bitterness, and a touch of the outdoors. In short: It’s a perfect toasting beer. —ERIC SAN JUAN

FAREWELL: PERFORMERS WE LOST IN 2014 There were way too many outstanding entertainment personages who died in 2014 — some from illness, some from age, some from unfortunate circumstances. Mournfully, we say godspeed to: Robin Williams, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Shirley Temple, James Garner, Elaine Stritch, Mickey Rooney, Harold Ramis, Lauren Bacall, Eli Wallach; Mike Nichols, Joan Rivers; Maya Angelou, Sid Caesar, Ralph Waite, Bob Hoskins, Ann B. Davis, Ruby Dee, Meshach Taylor, Richard Attenborough, Richard Kiel, Phyllis Frelich, David Brenner, Pete Seeger, Juanita Moore and Carmen Zapata. —L.H.

Meanwhile, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) is imprisoned at Dol Guldur and with the assistance of Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Saruman (Christopher Lee), he is freed from the forces of the Dark Lord Sauron (more voice work for Cumberbatch). The Lonely Mountain becomes the killing ground for the battle of the title, featuring an army of Elves led by Thranduil (Lee Pace), the Orcs and their general Azog (Manu Bennett), the Lake-land survivors led by Bard and Thorin, whose cousin arrives with a dwarf army. Also mixing it up in this battle royale are LOTR regular Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and gritty elven warrior Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). Martin Freeman’s beautifully nuanced work as Bilbo is the beating heart of this adventure as a loyal companion to the dwarves, a soldier doing his best despite his lack of experience in combat and as a hobbit who just wants to see his homeland once again. While the Hobbit trilogy never reaches the Rings epic heights, the final chapter nonetheless succeeds in sending the series out on a high note. ■

ompared to The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit film trilogy has been less engaging — despite boasting a fire-breathing dragon voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. However, for his final foray into the land of dwarves, elves, orcs and hobbits, director Peter Jackson has stepped up his game. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is by far the best in the second trilogy, featuring an engaging combination of thrilling action and characters whose bond of friendship in the face of grave danger provides a superb emotional component. When last we saw hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his dwarf pals led by their king, Thorin (Richard Armitage), they had just let loose the revenge-minded dragon Smaug, who proceeds to destroy Lake-town. Laketown’s Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans), in a brilliantly conceived CGI sequence, becomes the heroic dragonslayer when he manages to smite the deadly beast. However, the damage had been done, sending the survivors on a march to the Lonely Mountain, led by Bard.
