ichard Stockton College president Dr. Herman Saatkamp (pictured, far left) presided over a unique burial Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club: that of a time capsule on the occasion of Seaview’s 100th anniversary. The capsule — which surely must be bigger on the inside than it appears — held a treasure trove of memorabilia, including among other items, a photo album featuring a 2014 collection of the brides from Seaview’s weddings, a hand-crafted duck decoy from the Noyes Museum of Art, two menus from Fred & Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern, and a thumb drive featuring video commentary by Saatkamp. The capsule is to be unearthed in 2114. (Photo submitted: Richard Stockton College) CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

THE JAM GOES ON O. A .R. TAKES HOMETOWN ALBUM ON TOUR

O

BY ED CONDR AN

O.A.R., which will perform Saturday at the Tropicana, has built much of its audience by touring relentlessly. But leaving their home doesn’t mean the guys don’t still love it: Their latest album rhetorically thumbs its nose at the R.E.M. song “Don’t Go Back To Rockville,” titled as it is, simply, The Rockville LP. “It all started for us in Rockville,” DePizzo said. “And our sound still comes from there. Growing up in a town, well, that has a big effect on you.” It must have been some kind of effect, indeed, because O.A.R. has scaled some impressive heights. It took the group just four years from playing its first Manhattan gig at the Village Underground to headlining Madison Square Garden. “We earned that,” DePizzo said. “It wasn’t like we went from American Idol to Madison Square Garden; we did it on our own. We didn’t have a television show or radio play help us get there; we just worked hard for it. But I think that’s the way bands have to do it. You’ve got to really want to succeed in this business, because nobody is going to hand you anything.” N

O.A.R. Saturday, Nov. 22. 8pm. With Andy Grammer. Tropicana, 2831 Boardwalk, A.C. Tickets: $55–$65. Info: 800-THE-TROP

A.R. ought to feel comfortable performing by the ocean: The band is like a musical shark. Between constant touring and studio work, the energetic jam group has been continuously on the move since forming in 1996. “We’ve always had that work ethic,” drummer Chris Culos says. “We’ve been hardworking guys since we were kids. Most of us grew up in Rockville, Maryland, and have been in bands since middle school. We started playing together in my mom’s basement and never stopped — and that’s practically literal.” O.A.R., which also includes vocalistguitarist Marc Roberge, guitarist Richard On, bassist Benj Gershman and saxophonist Jerry DePizzo, has made some impressive earnest, lush pop-rock since it emerged from obscurity. But while they have a recognizable sound, they still manage to keep venturing in different sonic directions. “We haven’t made the same studio album over and over,” DePizzo says. “We’ve done different things, which has been great for us creatively. But we’re living in an interesting time right now; the music industry is in its 1950 mode. It’s all about the singles format. I don’t know where we fit with that. I try not to think about it.”

ranted, Thanksgiving Eve can’t hold a cranberry to New Year’s Eve in terms of party options in the A.C. area, but there’s still plenty of folks who feel that a fun time and a few beverages the night before stuffing yourself silly is as much a tradition as watching a ball drop. The Quarter at Tropicana has two alternatives to consider. Providence nightclub’s Thanksgiving Eve bash is from 10pm-4am and will feature famed NYC DJ Prime, and opening and closing sets by DJ Romeo. Call 609.345.7800 to reserve bottle service, or RSVP at providenceclubac.com. Ladies who RSVP before midnight get in free. Also in the Quarter, the local band SensaMotion (Joseph Collepardi, Raymond Worrick, Mike Crosson, Dylan Farina, Adam Flicker, John Kromenacker and Bryan Northern) will be jammin’ at Anthem Lounge (anthemlounge.com) on Thanksgiving Eve — and every Wednesday night as part of its newly started Rockin’ Reggae series. Admission is $5 and there will be $3 Pabst Blue Ribbon bottles and Bud Light drafts, and select $5 cocktails and Fireball shots. The party starts 11pm. The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s (thepoolafterdark.com) is hosting a Thanksgiving Eve shindig with famed British singer-songwriter/rapper/beatboxer and record producer Jay Sean. The party is from 9pm-4am and admission starts at $20. At Bally’s, Harry’s Oyster Bar (harrysoysterbar.com) in the Dennis Courtyard is doing an extended Happy Hour on Thanksgiving Eve from 4pm to closing, including buck-a-shuck oysters. Call 609.431.0092 for more. On the mainland, Gourmet Italian Cuisine (gourmetitaliancuisine.com) in Galloway Township is having a TGE bash with popular rockers Seven Stone (Rich Fredericks, Jeff Bugdon, Mickey Sacco and Guy DeFalco) starting 9pm. Call 609.652.1398 for more. N

hey are the manliest of men. The most masculine of the macho. The most marvelous of males. They are “beardos,” and they are going to take over Atlantic City on Saturday, Nov. 22 when the Beard & Mustache Championship of The Universe arrives at the Golden Nugget. Okay, so maybe having a beard doesn’t all by itself make you manly or masculine or marvelous, but these days it does seem to make you pretty cool. Beards are back in style, and they’re bigger than ever — in some cases, literally. Jon Henderson of Good Time Tricycle Productions, who’s producing the event, says our opinion of facial hair has changed over the years. Through the second half of the 20th century, sporting a beard was the opposite of cool; aside from eccentrics like Orson Welles, beards were decidedly “out.” Not anymore. “If you look at the ‘alternative’ styles from a few years back,” Henderson points out, “they are normal now.” He’s right. It used to be that only your

weird eighth-grade science teacher rocked a distinctive beard; now, any man who knows what to do with his testosterone does. Like that wizard with the oldest beard in Middle Earth said: “The world is changing.” Suddenly, it’s not just okay to celebrate your facial hair, it’s the height of awesome. The Championship of The Universe is proof of that. The event sprang out of an Asbury Park gala thrown by the Garden State Beard & Mustache Society. That group’s Garden State Beard and ‘Stache Competition is entering its fourth year, and Henderson was a big fan. So big, in fact, he asked his friend Matt Chrystal, president of the group, what he’d think about putting something together in Atlantic City. The answer was, basically: “You should go for it.” Henderson did. And he decided to go big. The hosts and judges are an assortment of the most weird, wild and fun names in alt-celebrity, including WWE star Gene Snitsky; adult film star Tera Patrick; Aarne

Bielefeldt of IFC’s Whisker Wars; some crazy dude called Beardimus Maximus (best known from MTV’s Save The Beard); 2013’s World Beard Champion Jeff Langum (not to be confused with bearded indie-music god Jeff Mangum); and perhaps Moses, if he can get some time off. As if beards weren’t manly enough, the event coincides with another happening at the Golden Nugget this weekend: the Whiskey Revival festival, a grand tasting experience featuring craft and artisan whiskey, spirits and moonshine from some 30 distilleries including Bulleit Bourbon, Art in the Age Spirits and Midnight Moon. It’s enough to make Ron Swanson a little light-headed. While whiskey and beards might sound like an intimidating black hole of testosterone, though, it turns out the event is far more general-audience-friendly than you’d think. For example, those all-star judges will be deciding on a dozen categories that include two categories for women (Fake Beard Most Creative and Fake Beard Most Realis-

tic), categories for varied facial hair styles (Donegal, Chops, Freestyle Beard & others), and, of course, Worst in Show and Champion of the Universe. There will also be a world-class burlesque show by Peek-a-Boo Revue — and a pre-party Friday night at the Boneyard Grill, hosted by the beard-loving women of the Whiskerina All-Star Society. Whether it comes naturally or through long years of waiting, it’s clear the bearded feel a strong sense of camaraderie. Eric Anderson, manager of operations at the all-things-beard website Beardfarmer.com, says he can’t imagine life without a mug full of facial hair. Part of that is the brotherhood that comes with having a face full of whiskers: “You can instantly connect with another bearded brother — it’s a face trophy,” Anderson says. “The thing about trophies is you like showing people and talking about them. I encourage all men to canvas their faces with their natural gifts.” And you know what? The non-bearded need not feel left out in the cold. “Even if you’re not bearded and don’t have a mustache, you’re going to have a great time because you have great music, great whiskey, and these people are so likeable,” says event promoter Henderson. “By leaps and bounds, this is going to be the coolest thing happening in Atlantic City all week.” Now, a lot of guys reading this will sympathize with the plight of those who can’t grow a beard. Don’t feel bad. “I was that guy,” Henderson admits. “Up until I was 30, I couldn’t grow a beard or mustache — then one day a mustache just appeared on my face. It was weird. The big thing is, you have to have patience.” ■

rom the moment he first blew into town and sampled a torpedo-shaped roll still warm from the oven, then followed it with a sandwich from the fabled White House sub shop, Guy Fieri knew it was only a matter of time before he opened a joint in Atlantic City. He just didn’t think it would take so long. “Six years? Feels more like 60 years, the frenetic, culinary force of nature said. But good things come to those who wait, and that includes both the ubiquitous Food Network rock star chef and his legion of fans who’ve spent years drooling for the blonde spike-haired native Californian’s cooking. Fieri combined business with more business last week. He spent several days barnstorming the Jersey shore with the crew from his popular series Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, then capped off his visit with a first look at Guy Fieri’s Chophouse, which opened in June in the former home of The Reserve, a fine-dining restaurant at Bally’s Atlantic City. To say Fieri was impressed with the build-out, the staff and the menu for his first attempt at a steak house is an understatement. From the moment he stepped off an escalator and looked past the open bar and into the dining room, Fieri, 46, was in awe. “Everybody has an expectation, especially when it’s theirs, that things are gonna be great. And unfortunately we sometimes set our expectations a little too high, he said as we sat at a table surrounded by an array of tempting dishes. (Note: Even two hours old and cold Vegas fries rule!) “I’ve owned a lot of restaurants, I’ve got a lot of restaurants in California, one in New York, Baltimore, a new one going in Laughlin [Nevada], one in Vegas, so I’ve had an opportunity to do some really great restaurants, he added. “But this one really is over the top. I don’t like to say any one [restaurant] is my favorite, but this has got to be near the top.

One reason Fieri was so taken with his newest venture is because it’s in a city that doesn’t get the props it deserves for its culinary scene. Fieri believes southern New Jersey in general, and Atlantic City in particular, is vastly underrated for the quality and diversity of its food. “There’s a really great food scene going on here in southern New Jersey,â€? he said. “When I got an opportunity to do my restaurant here, you want to keep yourself in good company. South Jersey and Atlantic City are underappreciated for its culinary excellence.â€? Although he’s only visited Atlantic City three times since “Triple Dâ€? began airing on the Food Network in 2006, Fieri, who earned his spot on the TV channel by winning the Next Food Network Star competition, speaks like he’s always had South Jersey beach sand in his shoes. During previous visits, his trademark red Chevy Camaro convertible has been parked outside places in Stone Harbor, Cape May and North Wildwood, to name just a few spots where he’s filmed segments for his show. Although the Food Network wouldn’t confirm where he shot during his most recent visit, Fieri did acknowledge he visited the Oyster Creek Inn Restaurant & Boat Bar in Leeds Point. Images posted on social media sites also showed his car parked at Kelsey & Kim’s Southern CafĂŠ, a soul food restaurant in Atlantic City’s Inlet section; Carluccio’s Coal Fire Pizza in Northfield; Ernest & Son Meat Market in Brigantine; the Grilled Cheese & Crab Cake Co. and The Anchorage Tavern & Restaurant, both in Somers Point. Proximity to the ocean gives the region a leg up on other places, he said, because it guarantees diners the freshest seafood. But it’s also the diversity of the population and its

visitors that keeps Atlantic City one of the best-kept secrets in foodie land. “This is a melting pot of people that you get here in Atlantic City,â€? he offered. “You’ve got a huge influence coming from New York, a huge influence coming from Philadelphia, so you’ve got a lot of cultures. People [need to] see Atlantic City as much more of a culinary destination than it’s been given credit for.â€? Just like the food he prepares in his restaurants and on his shows or the recipes in his books, Fieri attaches stories to the dishes. He also said his mother is one of his primary inspirations when he sets about creating something different or building a menu for a restaurant. “A lot of my (recipes) are based off my mom. My mom’s really creative, my mom’s really a character and I think about things that she likes,â€? he said. “As a matter of fact, when I’m working on my book or I’m working on the recipes for my show, a lot of times I’ll test it out on my mom. So when we started putting (the Chophouse) together, I started thinking what would she like. She’d like to go old school, she’d like some stuffed mushrooms, you don’t see stuffed mushrooms enough any more. We’ve got a little spicy, we’ve got a little raw (sushi) ‌ If you walk through our kitchen, you’ll see how much raw food we work with. And that gives us the opportunity to bring out the big flavors and deliver the goods.â€? There are several dishes on his Chophouse menu with celebrity stories behind them. Rock star Sammy Hagar figures prominently in the tuna taco dish. Fieri’s friend, actor Matthew McConaughey, will forever be attached to an appetizer known as Malibu oysters. “This isn’t just about eating or consuming, it’s about experiencing,â€? Fieri said. Next to the opening of his Atlantic City restaurant, Fieri’s most proud that after his first visit to the White House sub shop in 2008 — which triggered his love of Atlantic City food — his picture went up on the wall of stars which features sublovers who came before him, everyone from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles. “Getting my picture up there was a humungous deal to me,â€? he said proudly. â–

live sex on stage with his current girlfriend Lesley (Naomi Watts) during a preview. Inarritu and his cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, have fun contrasting the narrow corridors of the backstage world (shot numerous times) with stepping into the bright lights of the stage in some moments and the teeming humanity of the New York streets in others. One can’t really envision a happy ending as the final rehearsals play out — and Riggan’s mental issues overwhelm his attempts to hide them. Keaton grabs hold of his role and tears into it with a witty blend of pure crazy and subtle nuances as needed. Norton seems to delight in this opportunity to expose the raging ego of his character. And while Emma Stone is given a big-

ger slice of the acting pie as the daughter, it’s a shame that Naomi Watts and Andrea Riseborough as the other co-stars in the play-within-the-play and in Riseborough’s case as Riggan’s current lover, are mostly window dressing. All in all, Keaton delivers an amazing comeback performance in a film that suggests trusting actors is a dangerous game — considering they’ve spent a lifetime perfecting deception. ■

ichael Keaton’s actual acting career has obvious connections to the character he inhabits in Birdman, which adds a nice level of hyper-realism to this tale of an over-the-hill actor desperate to regain his popularity. That Keaton’s avatar chooses to pursue that fame once again by starring in and directing a play he’s adapted from a Raymond Carver story shows how out of touch he is in the modern world. Directed and co-written by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel 21 Grams), Keaton stars as Riggan Thomson, an actor who once soared in the upper echelon of movie fame as the star of the “Birdman” superhero franchise. Years later, he’s lost that top stardom and has been reduced to “Whatever happened to?” status. He’s desperate to regain at least some level of his former glory — although of course he characterizes his Broadway comeback not as fame-whoring, but as an opportunity to show off his serious talent. This would be a difficult, painful journey in the world he remembers — that is, the past — but now he’s living a world dominated by social media. And on top of that, Riggan is mentally unbalanced. He hears voices and has visions of his Birdman alter ego, but since he inhabits the world of the acting community, where raging egos and bad behavior are the norm, nobody seems to notice that he’s flown off the ledge of sanity. Actually it is understandable that he seems normal enough for an actor — even though he confesses to his agent (played by Zach Galifianakis) that he staged an accident in which a stage light fell and knocked out his costar during a rehearsal so he could hire somebody else for the role. In a classic case of “be careful what you wish for,” Riggan’s new co-star is Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), whose Broadway pedigree adds needed buzz and prestige to the production. Shiner is a jerk of seemingly unlimited cruelty who disrespects Riggan, makes a play for Riggan’s recovery addict daughter (played by Emma Stone) and wants to have
