FLOORING INSTALLATION

WATERPROOFING

Q

There is a strange odor in my basement and I think it might be mold. What immediate steps need to be taken to control the issue?

A

Don’t panic. Musty odors don’t always mean mold! However, basements tend to stay cooler, which causes the humidity level of the area to be higher than normal. In combination with basements having little to no air circulation, this can lead to musty odors and eventual Derek Ritchie mold growth. In most circumstances, a properly sized dehumidification unit that will clean, dry and circulate the air will eliminate the problem.

Q

I have young children and two dogs. What is the best type of flooring for my kitchen?

A

We recommend laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP)/ luxury vinyl tile (LVT). Both products are very durable, stain resistant and water resistant. Laminate and LVP offer the look of wood. Elisabeth Stubbs LVT mimics tile without the coldness, hardness, and grout.

WINDOW COVERINGS

Q

Besides shades, blinds, and shutters, what other window coverings can make an impact in a room?

A

While shades, blinds, and shutters offer privacy and sun control, the option of drapery panels can add texture, pattern, and color to any window. In addition, when you incorporate Andrea and Sean Zare coordinating pillows and a custom rug to your space, you are able to show off your personal style.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT

Q

How do I know if my roof has storm damage and what are the immediate next steps I should take?

A

Check for missing shingles, indents on your existing shingles, or any cracks in your shingles. A roof professional will be able to let you know if you need a roof replacement Chad Cruce and if your insurance company will be able to assist.

Q

What are three tips for window replacement shopping?

A

First, if you’re looking for fine craftsmanship and quality windows, the lowest quote is not necessarily the best option. So do not choose a contractor based on price alone. Second, communication is important. You know you have hired a good contractor when they Peter Morrison are responsive, listen to your questions and explain the process clearly. Finally, consider scaling back on a project to stay within your budget—but never compromise! Poor quality vinyl windows will cost you more over time because they may need to be replaced in 10 years or less.

CONCRETE

Q

What are three things I can do to keep my driveway looking new through each season?

A

Though ice on the surface of your driveway can be dangerous, do not use salt. This causes spalling, where the surface crumbles. Instead, use more effective chemical ice melt like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Another way to maintain the look Michael Cangemi of your driveway is to pressure wash it. Last but not least, be sure to caulk cracks and joints to prevent water erosion.

The most common indicators that it is time to replace your siding is swelling of your masonite particle siding (a mixture of wood fibers and other materials) and wet or dry rot on wooden Charlie Dallavalle siding. This is caused by excessive humid conditions or exposure to liquids.

Q

If my gutters are not free of debris, can my home be damaged?

A

Improperly channeled roof water that stems from clogged gutters (primarily leaves, pine needles, debris) is actually the leading cause of foundation and Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk waterproofing issues in homes. If not addressed, these issues can worsen over time, resulting in far more serious and expensive repairs.

GARAGE DOORS

Q

What is the difference between torsion and extension springs? Which one is better?

A

Extension springs are mounted on each side of a door, stretch out when the door is closed, and work independently of one another. Torsion springs are mounted on a shaft above the door and lift the door with a smoother motion than the extension springs, making a torsion spring system the better system. Also, torsion John Nale springs have an average lifespan of 15,000 to 20,000 lifts opposed to the 5,000 to 10,000 lifts of extension springs.

HVAC

Q

What type of heating system should I get and why?

A

We recommend variable speed furnaces with variable speed compressors. A variable speed heating system controls airflow to provide better temperature and humidity control, and air distribution. Compared to a conventional single-speed furnace, a variable speed furnace uses about two-thirds less electricity. Furnaces with variable speed fans work well with other energy-efficient Bill Mashraky upgrades such as zoned heating controls and smart thermostats.

Top Things to Consider for Aging-In-Place Design Add an electrical outlet near the toilet for use of night light, heated toilet seat or personal hygiene system, etc. Avoid toggle switches. Paddle or rocker switches are easier because you just tap them and the lights turn on. Doorbells and smoke/carbon monoxide alarms are helpful for people who have hearing challenges.

Photos courtesy of BeckySue Becker, CMKBD, CAPS, CLIPP™, photography by Willett Photography.

It’s recommended that baseboards be at least 9 inches tall to avoid drywall damage from accidental contact with wheelchairs. Use return levers for handles on cabinets and interior doors to avoid snagging clothes, purses, and other items. Consider auto sink faucet controls that can be operated with a foot or knee, or controls that automatically turn on/off. Select appliances with backlit or colorful knobs (like the signature red knobs of Wolf products) that are easy to see. Smart speakers in the bathroom allow for voice-activated phone calls in case of an emergency. Proper lighting increases safety and makes it easier to perform tasks. Some lighting options include toe kicks on cabinets to identify edges/walkways, add direct-wired lighting or battery-powered lighting inside cabinetry to see better, and incorporating LED ribbons under handrails and stair treads.

Aging in Place

A Livable Home for a Lifetime Subtle design changes can enable everyone to age comfortably in their own home. BeckySue Becker, CMKBD, CLIPP™, owner of Designs by BSB and a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, shares the basics of the concept of aging in place and tips everyone should consider when preparing their house for the next phase of life. What is aging in place and why should someone consider it? BeckySue Becker: It’s for one to be able to live in their home comfortably and independently no matter their age, income, or ability. How does one know their home is adaptable to aging in place? BSB: Most homes have the ability to adapt (such as lowering kitchen countertops to a 30-inch height with knee space for someone who cannot stand for long periods of time or is in a wheelchair), but there are circumstances where it may be too costly to make modifications. For example, older homes can sometimes only have 24-inch door openings, which makes a curbless entry from the outside not always possible.

Aging in place is about

When remodeling for incorporating aging in place, what is the top priority? BSB: It’s all about incorporating safety into your design, even with simple selections like choosing contrasting colors, which can help you better navigate a space if you have sight problems. The most common and best example is adding a grab bar to your shower.

safety into your design.

A Healthier Kitchen

Breathe Better in the Kitchen When we think of air pollutants that can wreak havoc on our health, rarely do we consider the ones that could be inside of our homes. However, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels. Even more surprising is that the kitchen can be one of the indoor areas with the highest levels of pollutants.

Here are five tips for keeping the air in your cookhouse clean. Consider Your Cooktop

• Scientist Brett Singer, Ph.D., of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, notes that gas burners produce

significant quantities of nitrogen dioxide (a respiratory irritant), can produce small amounts of carbon monoxide, and also emit fine and ultrafine particles (these are especially dangerous since they can move throughout the body in ways larger particles can’t). Electric burners, which don’t produce carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide (but still release particles) may be a better option.

PM

Improve Ventilation

Kitchen design by Rosa Moreno Kitchens; photography by Karen Calver Photography.

• It is key to ventilate air while you cook to remove odors and

fumes. When renovating your kitchen, see if it is possible to have the hood/exhaust fan direct outdoors. If this isn’t possible or your current hood only recirculates air back into the kitchen, when weather permits, open windows when cooking. If you are replacing your hood, consider products certified by the Home Ventilating Institute® like the Café™Wall-Mount Glass Canopy Chimney Hood by GE Appliances. Its 350 cubic feet per minute venting system removes smoke, grease, odors, and moisture for cleaner air in your kitchen.

Replace Filters

• According to Sylvane, a Georgia-based indoor air quality

e-commerce website, most hood ventilation system filters need to be changed around every six months, though the exact lifespan of the filter depends on how often you cook.

Cook on Back Burners

• Range hoods can reduce pollutants by 50% or more when cooking occurs on back burners, according to a study at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Use Do-It-Yourself Cleaners

• Avoid chemical options and select a homemade solution instead. It is easy to find recipes online and most involve simple ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, and water.

Vision Board

Get Started! Envision Your Dream Bathroom Now Whether you’re considering a major bathroom overhaul or just adding a couple of upgrades here and there, it’s important to visualize your dream space. Getting inspiration from your favorite home magazines—we hope My Home Improvement is at the top of your list—is the perfect start! You can even collect product ideas from some of the top bathroom showrooms as seen on page 29. As you see images of the lighting fixtures, flooring, cabinetry, faucets, and more that you like, save them. Then, place or pin the photographs on a large poster board or cork board. Taking it one step further, some showrooms might even give you tile samples to touch, so be sure to affix those to your board too. Each item will bring you one step closer to making your dream bathroom a reality.

This ’70s Decatur home presented its owners with the opportunity to revamp an outdated galley kitchen into an elegant entertaining space. Enter Lisa Brooks, owner and principal designer of LB Designs, with 19 years of experience. A crisp white theme was chosen to match the couple’s desire for a bright and airy kitchen. Details such as custom heightened cabinetry, like that above the custom panel refrigerator, were also chosen to complement the 6-foot-plus heights of the homeowners. Appliances like a convection steam oven were also installed to feed homeowner Bob Gunkel's passion for gourmet cooking. He says, “Every week, I bring my niece and nephew over for ‘Bob’s Night’ and cook different meals for them to show them there is more food to enjoy than just chicken nuggets.” To complete the dining destination, a reclaimed Baccarat chandelier beloved by the couple was selected as the focal point above the island.

Wanting to create the perfect hub for casual gatherings, this Marietta family of three—and a dog—enlisted the help of Stephanie Ives, co-owner and vice president of Custom Dwellings, Inc. Inspired by the clients’ love of clean lines and the wife’s rural upbringing, Ives used her 20 years of industry experience to plan a space that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Utilizing natural elements was a must for the family. Conceptualized as a modern farm table, the oversized island with a walnut countertop is a primary work space for canning, daily food preparation, and entertaining. Workflow was also key. The family needed a pantry that wasn’t detached from the kitchen. Ives transformed an unused gun closet off the dining room, into a pantry suitable for supporting the kitchen.

Visions for dream spaces don’t always come easy, but that was not the case for this homeowner. From cabinet colors to hardware, she had it all planned out. The only missing component? A designer to pull it all together. Trudy McGinnis, owner of McGinnis Group, LLC, helped this Marietta homeowner implement her ideas to create a functional space that maintained the loft’s original look. To help maximize the limited space, the longtime designer installed roomy custom cabinets with super Susans (a turntable mounted to a shelf) for better accessibility of items stored in the back. Downsizing to a single-bowl sink, a detail McGinnis often incorporates into her projects, increased counter space. Another space-saving signature tactic of McGinnis’ was to install a wastebasket underneath the sink. A final request from the homeowner—and the perfect personal finishing touch—was an aesthetic display of her cherished teapot collection.

What started as fixing a simple shower leak resulted in a complete overhaul of this couple’s master bathroom. The Doraville homeowners yearned for a space to unwind in after a long day and entrusted Cailin M. Thelen, owner of Thelen Designs, LLC, alongside Oneida Builders, Inc., to make their dream oasis a reality. The top priority? A large shower with multiple water sources for that spa-like feel. The homeowners selected tiles that added visual intrigue, such as the Tantrum collection tile in Blue Bayou by Sonoma Tilemakers, which resembles cracked glass, and the wavy Almond Muretto tile from the Castlestone collection by Piemme. Attention to organization was also given—the custom cherrywood cabinetry by Schuon Kitchens and Baths, Inc. features pullout drawers complete with interior outlets.

Kimberly Warren, CKD, CAPS, owner of Chestatee Kitchen & Bath, fell in love with design when her father took her to a National Kitchen & Bath Association show in Chicago at 21. Later, having earned her degree in interior design from Purdue University and working 20-plus years for other design firms, Warren decided it was time to branch out. She teamed up with her husband, Billy Warren, a licensed residential general contractor, in 2012 to create Chestatee Kitchen & Bath. What started as a less than 1,000-square-foot showroom has quickly grown. In January 2019, the pair (and four-legged colleague Cooper) moved the company to a new 3,400-square-foot space in North Georgia. A one-stop shop for full kitchen and bathroom remodels, this locale features a variety of the latest design trends like two-tone cabinets and Cambria® quartz countertops.
