What are some top warning signs that water has damaged my foundation?

A

Water pooling around your foundation is one sign. Downspouts dumping water right next to the foundation is another indicator.

While both can cause serious issues, other Derek Ritchie signs need immediate attention. Call a professional right away if you see stair-step cracks or horizontal cracking in your brick or block foundation, or excessive moisture and efflorescence in the block.

How should I clean fiber cement siding, and how often should I do it?

A

I recommend cleaning fiber cement siding once a year or every other year. I would use a 50/50 solution of bleach and water or a solution of 90% water and 10% Simple Green® Charlie Dallavalle All-Purpose Cleaner.

Soft wash the house. Don’t put a lot of pressure on it. Let the chemicals do the work. I also recommend using a soft bristle brush like you would use on your car to lightly clean the windows, then rinse them with a hose, so there’s no risk of blowing any seals.

I want carpet, but I’m worried about stains. Which options are best, especially if I have children and pets?

Solution-dyed nylon, triexta, and solution-dyed polyester. These fibers can be cleaned very aggressively without damage to the carpet.

Is there anything else I should consider repairing or replacing when getting a new shower door?

I recommend removing your old shower enclosure (or having it removed) well before your new one arrives in order to inspect the old tile or substrate.

This will give you an opportunity to clean the David Drexler area underneath the door and locate and repair any gaps or holes where grout is missing. You may be without a shower door for a few days or weeks, but the inconvenience will pay off with the assurance that your new shower will be watertight.

Charcuterie Board 101 The charcuterie board is today’s go-to for housewarmings, birthdays or even just a romantic night in. That being said, the art of crafting the perfect board can be a little elusive. Thankfully, Shanice Gravesandy, founder and creative director of Shmore Boards, is here to help!

Shanice crafts bespoke displays made with artisan cheeses, gourmet treats and the freshest produce, all thoughtfully presented in stunning displays. She has crafted boxes for Chick-fil-A, the Alzheimer’s Association, and now she is here to help you create your own masterpiece.

Meats: Include at least two different types of charcuterie on your board. There’s plenty to choose from, like prosciutto, salami, coppa, bresaola, soppressata and so much more.

Crackers: Select at least two types of crackers, one that’s more neutral like a sea salt to build flavor and one that’s packed with flavor, like gourmet cranberry crisps.

When it comes to building a board, variety is everything for two reasons—you want to have something for everyone and it’s fun to play around with different flavor pairings.

Accompaniments: Now that you have your board basics, you can add on the extra flavor and color. I suggest at least four types of fresh fruit, nuts, olives, honey and/or fruit preserves (fig is my favorite!), dried fruits and your favorite gourmet chocolate.

Cheeses: I’d suggest having at least three cheeses present with different flavors and textures: a soft cheese like brie or goat, hard cheese like aged cheddar and a semihard like a truffle Gouda. Each of these cheeses has completely different flavors.

The brie is creamy and light, the aged cheddar is bold and sharp, and the truffle Gouda would be the statement cheese that surprises guests with its earthy, yet smooth flavor.

Where to Get Your Supplies In Atlanta: Trader Joe’s and Sprouts Farmers Market have amazing prices on really good cheeses. The Unexpected Cheddar at Trader Joe’s and the smoked Gouda at Sprouts are my go-to’s! When it comes to accompaniments, Your Dekalb Farmers Market in Decatur and Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market in Smyrna always offer something new and exciting to incorporate.

Sustainable Living Repurposing Runoff with Rain Gardens

By Barbra Buoy A downpour can do more than ruin a day, it can be an environmental hazard and a nuisance for homeowners who have to deal with the runoff. Rain gardens, a sunken area in the landscape that collects and filters runoff, can solve both problems beautifully.

Environmental Benefits ✓ Runoff can pick up pollutants and carry them to streams and watersheds via storm drains.

Rain gardens catch the runoff, filter it and repurpose it. ✓ Gardens double as habitats and food sources for wildlife, such as butterflies and birds. ✓ They protect against flooding and drainage problems.

If not redirected to rain gardens where the water will be filtered, runoff can pick up

fertilizer, oil, pesticides, bacteria and other pollutants, and carry them to our streams, rivers and watersheds.

✓ Businesses can also use rain gardens to help safeguard the environment. Nearly 300,000 gallons of water are captured and cleaned by the rain garden at Fernbank Museum each year, preventing dangerous pollutants from the parking lot from entering local water sources.

Tips For Building a Rain Garden ✓ Conduct a soil infiltration test to determine if your yard is suitable for a rain garden. See the University of Connecticut's rain garden website for an easy how-to. www.nemo.uconn.edu/raingardens ✓ Select a location that is a minimum of 10 feet from your home if you have a basement.

I don’t want to scratch my new floor!

Hard surface floors are beautiful and practical. But not indestructible. Wood, LVP, laminate – all can be scratched. You can take preventative measures by not wearing shoes (especially high heels) in your home, but the major culprit is the heavy furniture. Here’s how to avoid scratching your floor: • AVOID PUSHING AND DRAGGING FURNITURE Many furniture pieces are quite heavy and require extra help to move. Oftentimes, homeowners attempt to move the furniture themselves, not asking for assistance.

This is when scratches occur! If the piece is light or small enough, lift it from the hardwood flooring instead. If it’s something heavier and larger, always ask for assistance. You might be eager to rearrange your furniture, but a little help can prevent scratching your floors and keep them protected.

• ROLL OUT THE AREA RUGS Use a rug(s) as a barrier. Not only does it protect against gouges, but it adds warmth, extra style, and color to the space. It can even anchor and tie together a large and spacious seating area. Add even more protection with a rug pad beneath your rugs. Just be certain the rug pad backing is safe to use on your floor.

Otherwise, you might find a yellowing discoloration or the pad itself might cause fine hairline scratches.

• USE FURNITURE PADS Sometimes, you don’t want to use a rug. For instance, an area rug beneath a dining table is a great idea, but certain dining chair feet catch and make it difficult to slide to or from the table. Instead, when you need some movement, you could forgo the area rug and attach furniture pads to the feet. Felt pads perform exceptionally well when you need to shift and slide around furniture. You can easily create this abstract piece by painting a canvas white (use a store-bought canvas or build your own), then, using the color of your choice, paint the bottom half of the canvas. Make String Art

Is It Time to Break Up with Your Tree?

“Sick trees can often be saved,” says Chris Heim, district manager and certified arborist for the Davey Tree Expert Company in Atlanta, “but a damaged or dead tree on your property that goes unaddressed is a serious safety risk. Homeowners may be surprised to know that with a few easy steps each spring, you can play an important role in keeping your trees healthy.”

So how to determine whether you and your tree are going through a rough patch, or whether your tree has a serious issue and it’s time to “break up?” In as little as 15 minutes, homeowners can do an easy four-step inspection to spot some of the major signs of tree health problems.

The key is being able to tell the difference between a dead and declining tree by using your eyes and hands to spot common issues.

FOUR STEPS TO TREE INSPECTION Step 1: Scratch beneath the surface.

Using a knife or your fingernail, scratch a twig of the tree. If it’s moist and green underneath, your tree’s alive. If it’s brown and brittle, try scraping a few more twigs to see if any are with fresh, moist green underneath. If there's no green to be found, your tree is likely sick or dying.

Step 2: Find the root. Start low and take a look at the base of your tree. Examine the tree’s roots, seeking out any soft spots, decay, mushrooms or other fungi as these are signs of rot.

Step 3: Check the support. The next step is to examine the tree’s collar, the area where the trunk and roots meet at the soil surface. Pull back the grass to scan for any signs of decay. If the bark is missing, falling off or broken, that’s an indicator that your tree needs attention.

Step 4: Take a good look. Scan for any

large cracks or splits in the trunk, these indicate structural weakness in the tree and require careful evaluation.

Trunk swelling, which is an overgrowth area of bark, is also a sign of advanced decay. Determining the extent of deterioration is a task best left to a certified arborist, who can use tools and expert knowledge to assess.

If any of the above steps revealed an issue, you’ll need to know the potential hazard and figure out the best next steps. A certified arborist can determine whether the tree can be saved and support you in removing or replacing dead or decaying trees. This important work will ensure that your yard is healthy and vibrant when spring rolls around.

The Heart of Home Improvement Kara’s Kloset Jerusalem House's Donation Closet Renovated and Renamed in Honor of Former Board Member

By Barbra Buoy Jerusalem House is Atlanta’s oldest and largest provider of permanent housing for homeless and low-income individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Since opening the original “house” in 1989 as a residence for people dying of AIDS, it has evolved into an organization that provides over 600 metro Atlanta residents with fully-furnished apartments, food, clothing and resources to build self-sufficiency.

When former board member Kara Thompson passed away unexpectedly in 2019, her friends wanted to do something special to honor her memory.

Kara’s fashionable style was well known among her friends and colleagues. Working with Jerusalem House’s Manager of Volunteer Services, Robin Reid, it was decided that a complete renovation of the donated clothing space at their family housing campus would be a fitting way to honor Kara. In addition to fully funding the redesign and donating items from Kara’s extensive wardrobe, her friends also contributed their own clothes, shoes and jewelry.

Candy Tate. “‘Kloset' with a ‘K' keeps her memory alive for us and inspires us all to aspire to her level of self-care, inside and out. We want the residents to feel that we're thinking about them. The area had not been remodeled since it was established in 1997. “It was out of date and the space wasn’t being utilized well,” said Robin. Renata Ares, co-owner of Closet Factory Atlanta, was brought in to redesign the room.

The Home Depot, another longtime supporter, donated the carpeting.

The redesigned space was aptly renamed Kara’s Kloset and is open to all residents.
