FROM THE PUBLISHER

Set Yourself Up for Success

For some inspiration, take a look at some of the Award-Winning Projects from NARI, NKBA and GAHBA that we’ve highlighted starting on page 21. They’ll not only give you plentiful ideas, they’re from the local associations that can help you find creative and reliable experts to turn your design dreams into a reality. To begin, you need to know what you want in your space, along with your specific requirements. For instance, are there two cooks in the house? Do you have a large family and entertain often? Do you need to childproof your space? We can help you figure it out! Just turn to page 35 and fill out our 2022 Kitchen & Bath Planner. We’ve organized it A step-by-step guide to finding the right pros so you’ll be sure not to miss for your home improvement projects: a single detail. Your next step is to begin gathering photos of spaces you like and colors you love and then think about the design style that best fits you and your family. For instance, do you prefer traditional over midcentury modern? Minimalist versus showy? Then comes the stage where you start interviewing potential contractors. A renovation can take months, so you’ll want to make sure you’re able to communicate well with the remodeler you choose.

1. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. This is always a good first step, but you still need to do more research. You and your neighbor may have different needs/wants in both communication and outcome of the project. 2. Go to www.atlantahomeimprovement.com to look at projects and search the Find A Pro directory. 3. Call and meet with at least three companies. 4. Read reviews about the companies. Pay attention to the dates of the reviews and remember: Very few people give favorable reviews. They only take the time to post reviews when things go badly. 5. Look at each proposal carefully. Make sure you are comparing "apples to apples." 6. Trust your instincts. Of the three (or more) companies, who did you communicate most easily with? 7. Make sure you understand the payment terms. NEVER pay for a job that is not complete. 8. If you are happy with the job, be sure to tell friends and neighbors and write reviews for them!

Lastly, use our step-bystep guide to help ensure a successful renovation.

SHOWER ENCLOSURES

Q

What sort of window coverings are considered best for a nursery or child’s room?

A

For safety reasons, you don’t want anything with looped or loose pull cords, and you want to keep wands out of children’s reach as well. Ideal options include

Silhouette Window Shadings, Sonnette Cellular Roller Shades or Provenance Woven Wood Shades, which are all

Hunter Douglas products that feature their child-safe LiteRise operating system that works with a simple push of a button to raise and lower your shades.

Q

What can be done to make a shower easier to get in and out of?

A

With a curbless shower, there’s nothing to step or trip over when entering and exiting the shower. This provides a cleaner look and added safety. However, there may be additional costs, as the subfloor might have to be lowered slightly to accommodate for drainage. Even so, this

design is becoming more and more David Drexler popular with elderly homeowners, individuals with a disability or injury,

or anyone who just wants to give their shower a clean, minimalist look.

HVAC

Q

What are the benefits of using a geothermal system to cool or heat your house?

A

Geothermal units utilize the renewable energy in the Earth’s surface to heat and cool your home. When compared to a conventional system that burns expensive fossil fuels, a geothermal

heating or cooling system can save you up to 70% on your utility bills, essentially paying for itself in 5 to 10 years.

FLOORING INSTALLATION

Other than being annoying, a noisy door might signal tracks out of alignment or aging rollers. Left unchecked, these issues could lead to early equipment demise. We recommend

regular lubrication of all moving parts and springs, and tightening any loose bolts. Our annual maintenance

What Is the Best Floor for a Kitchen?

o

Kitchen floors take a lot of abuse: heavy traffic, moisture concerns, chairs around islands or tables. When looking for flooring that will perform well in high-traffic conditions, consider the materials below: • LUXURY VINYL—Available in wood looks (3” to 7” wide planks) and tile and stone visuals. The tiles can sometimes be grouted if desired, and are available in a variety of sizes, including 12” x 24”. The technology being utilized creates extremely realistic patterns and textures. Luxury vinyl is an extremely moisture-resistant floor, very durable and stain-resistant, and most are rated for commercial use. The majority of styles have attached backings, which add warmth, cushioning and sound-deadening properties. • LAMINATES—Very scratch and indentation resistant, making it perfect for busy, active households, especially homes with pets. Laminates mimic wood in popular high-end looks like wide planks, exotic species, whitewashed, oil-rubbed and even distressed looks like wire-brushing and hand-scraping. • TILE—A popular choice of flooring due to aesthetic appeal, durability and easy care. A properly installed tile floor will outperform and outlast any other floor covering product created for the same application. There are wood-look tiles that have great realism if you don’t want a traditional tile look. Do consider slip resistance; a textured tile is recommended. • WOOD—There are some wood floors that are better suited for kitchens. Not indestructible, but certainly more durable. Some features to look for include wire brushing, character grade, distressed, low gloss/ matte finishes and oil-rubbed finishes. Expect these practical floors to be on the upper end of the price scale. Come in today and meet with an Enhance Design Consultant to find the perfect floor for your kitchen! BEST OF
