Know Your Kitchen Layouts Know your kitchen. Before you even think about renovating, you must first have a sense of what you’re working with. Or what you’re working toward!

Below, we list four types of basic kitchen layouts, according to the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association). All of these illustrate the concept of the “work triangle,” or the distance between the three main work areas: sink, cooktop and refrigerator. For maximum efficiency, the work triangle should follow these guidelines: • Each triangle leg should be 4 to 9 feet long, and the sum of the three should not exceed 26 feet.

• Cabinetry should not intersect any leg of the triangle.

• General traffic patterns should not interfere with the work triangle.

• Islands should have at least 3 to 4 feet of aisle on each side. Avoid placing the island between two points of the triangle.

WORK ZONES – SIMPLIFYING EVERYDAY LIFE

When deciding where to put cabinets and appliances in relation to each other, it can be helpful to think in terms of zones or work zones. This

approach, which focuses on function rather than objects, means you’ll end up with an everyday friendly and efficient kitchen.

GALLEY (TWO WALL) | The galley consists of two facing walls and usually is found in condos and apartments. The work triangle is efficient, but the aisle between the two countertops is narrow. This option is a good plan for one cook.

ATLANTA’S LOCAL APPLIANCE SHOWROOM Sewell Appliance was founded in 1962 by Charlie Sewell with a desk and a phone in an office shared with a small heating and air company. problem Stepping into this master bath gave this homeowner a totally ‘80s flashback. She wanted to snap out of the time warp and bring in some soft sophistication. She also longed for a bit more space and storage, cozy heated tile floors, a glamorous freestanding tub and a separate glass enclosed shower.

solution To enlarge the area and create a better footprint, the designer took over a wet bar from an adjoining room and reorganized the plumbing to accommodate a different layout. Once the new floor plan was established, the designer and homeowner could fully realize their mutual vision. The lighting, hardware, fixtures, tile and textiles all enhance the feel of luxury and elegance. As a final touch, artist Kass Wilson used a faux-finish painting technique on the walls to repeat the embroidered design of the fabrics selected.

The homeowner wanted to open up the space as much as possible, add more storage and improve the overall flow of traffic in the area. With no windows nearby, finding ways to bring light into the room presented yet another challenge.

solution Designer Becky Sue Becker’s galley layout erased those cramped corners and brought fresh opportunities to amplify storage. The new peninsula features a walnut-top waterfall edge defining an eating/ entertaining zone within the functional workspace. The eclectic mix of organic materials—such as stone, wood and metal—create texture and depth in the otherwise neutral color scheme. Painted white cabinetry, light countertops, stainless appliances and industrial pendants illuminate the modernized kitchen.

The Lynch family lived in their home for over 20 years before tackling this major master bath renovation. Changes in physical needs made it necessary to revamp the room. Beth Lynch longed for a comfortable, relaxing space that incorporated universal design principles and accommodated the mobility challenges of her wheelchair.

When first considering the remodel, she and her husband started out the way many of us do—on a computer, searching the web. The couple zeroed in on photos of work done by the Roswell-based firm Attention To Detail. They were not only impressed with the ATD project gallery, but they also connected with the company’s overall 82
