editor’sletter Time To Celebrate With the demands of a deadlinedriven monthly magazine, there is usually little time to reflect on the past. But this month, we are pausing for a moment to mark Atlanta Home Improvement’s 10th year of publication, an exciting milestone for us all. While looking back at old issues of the magazine and talking with fellow staff members, I have learned a great deal about our history and the ambitious team behind it. Some of our staff have been here for nearly all 10 years and possess a deep understanding of Atlanta’s home-improvement industry, providing leadership here at the magazine and in the community at large. Though the industry—and magazine business model—has changed a lot during the past 10 years due to shifts in technology and the economy, we have met these challenges and continued to provide readers with relevant information and services. As a result, Atlanta Home Improvement today is much more than a magazine. sherri’sletter Q&A Q: Why did you start Atlanta Home Improvement? A: “To provide Atlantans with one great source for all their home-improvement needs, whether small—like changing the paint colors on your wall—or large—like a major kitchen remodel. It is meant to be a handy guide for the consumer and to give local business owners a credible place to communicate with the public. One of the biggest problems for homeowners is finding credible help. When you see the experts in the pages of the magazine frequently communicating their ideas to readers, it gives readers confidence and shows they are invested in their craft. When someone goes into your house to do something, even if it’s minor, it’s major.”

Q: To what do you attribute the magazine’s continued success? A: “I think it is because we have built such a loyal following of readers. People trust us, and they tend to trust the people that are affiliated with us. We are consistent and committed to delivering to them what they need to know. The foundation for the high level of information we can provide is the relationships we have built with the local home-improvement industry such as the Atlanta chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, The Bob and RodMan Home Show, the Atlanta Home Show and later the local National Kitchen & Bath Association chapter and Metro Atlanta Landscape & Turf Association. We felt like there were mutual opportunities for us to grow together.”

Q: How have you seen the home-improvement industry change over the past 10 years?

A: “The wish list for consumers has evolved from wants to needs with the changing economy, but many people still are homeowners and need to protect their property. It has changed in terms of what homeowners are purchasing, but it continues to be something people spend their money on. Function and maintenance have become important.”

Q: How do you see the magazine’s role in the future? A: “I see the magazine’s role as continuing to be the voice of business owners to communicate with the public about all sorts of home-improvement projects and needs. I see that platform evolving to include web, social media and all the others ways that consumers engage. I think the magazine is probably more important today with all the information that is out there now. It helps people cut to the chase rather than spending hours searching on the web and provides trusted resources.”

patti’sletter The idea for Atlanta Home Improvement began when [founder] Sherri and I were working together at Atlanta Sports & Fitness magazine. When we weren’t talking about work, we were talking about our homes. We thought, “That’s what we need to be doing a magazine about.” Around the same time, the housing industry was going strong and HGTV had just entered the market. People were getting into having pretty landscapes

and changing their décor, but there was a need for local resources. So we decided to provide that along with inspiring projects and ideas from those resources to create

something that had never been. Since then, the housing market has changed a lot, but people are still updating and improving their homes. When

we started, people were building for fun (home theaters and outdoor kitchens) and space (the open floor plan!) and not thinking about maintenance and long-term upkeep. Now when people make improvements, I believe they are more concerned about function, cost and energy-efficiency. Part of the reason the magazine has been successful is because of its affiliation with the local remodeling and design associations and the home and garden shows. Through these affiliations, we became a conduit for getting information from the industry and showcasing it to Atlanta homeowners.

As the home-improvement industry re-invents itself, the education and connections to local resources provided by the magazine continue to be important. Those connections will also happen through different mediums such as the newly launched web and social media platforms. We have also enjoyed introducing you, our readers, to the creative minds that are the top in the remodeling, landscaping and interior design industry in Atlanta.

As Sherri Adair and Patti Stephens launched Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine in 2001, the world shifted with the events of 9/11, and homeowners began what we now call “cocooning.” Americans traveled less and started to invest more in their homes. Since our magazine’s purpose is to educate the homeowner on renovation, home maintenance and landscaping, as well as serve as a resource, it was in the right place at the right time. Looking back over the last 10 years, this industry has changed over and over again. I was witness to the boom in the remodeling industry as homeowners updated their kitchens with new surfaces and the latest appliances, changed bathrooms into their own spa escapes, expanded a simple closet into an entire room itself and saw the yard evolve from grass, plants and pools to a full backyard oasis one might see at a resort. Kitchens expanded to the outdoors. We became educated on what local plants could survive our shifts from droughts to floods to droughts again. The home truly became an extension of one’s own personality – the options endless. We also saw a shift toward taking more care of our environment and took steps to become more “green” around the house. New environmentally friendly materials were developed, homeowners focused on conserving water, and panels were added to our roofs to conserve energy. So what is to come in the years ahead? Your guess is as good as mine, but I am excited to learn and share.

Approximate cost: $460,000 Sometimes what looks like just an elegant exterior update has so much more hidden inside. This project not only included giving the home an exterior facelift, including a new stacked-stone front stoop that offers a beautiful first impression, but it also entailed creating a new detached garage apartment. As senior citizens, the homeowners were planning for the future and wanted a separate, private space to house caretakers and/or guests. The new apartment has one bedroom, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a living room, a full kitchen and a breakfast area. The owners wanted the space to be simple but elegant, and they achieved this look with neutral colors on the flooring, carpeting and paint throughout. The fixtures and appliances are designed to keep guests or full-time residents comfortable within the cozy space.

Try and Keep Up! Life may move pretty fast, but these days technology is moving even faster! When you’re going through a remodel, it’s a good idea to prepare for the future by readying your home for tech upgrades that you may want to incorporate at a later date. Take the following suggestions to your contractor and discuss which ones will best suit your family’s needs. • Make sure you have better access to electrical equipment by designating proper places for it (such as behind walls or in a closet). • Run upgraded wiring (such as CAT-5 cables) throughout your home to allow for a network. • Set up a wireless network (WLAN) with an operating system that supports wireless networking. • Incorporate a properly sized electrical service box so you can add technology easily.

This eco-friendly whole-house remodel turned an inefficient, drafty home that was prone to mold into an efficient showplace, while also adding space and improving functionality. To make the home larger for a growing family without increasing its footprint, the remodelers expanded the second floor to add two bedrooms, a full bath and a laundry room. They also improved the flow of the home by enlarging and redesigning the kitchen and removing several walls. Since efficiency was key, the remodelers added water-efficient toilets and showerheads, better insulation and a new HVAC system. A dying oak tree that had been cut down in the home’s yard was salvaged and transformed into new wood flooring for the addition, and many of the other materials used were also salvaged. The home’s old roof was deteriorating slate, so it was replaced with a synthetic rubber roof, which is made from recycled materials and increases energy efficiency. To make sure the additions matched the exterior of the home, brick was salvaged from a previous project and faux finished to blend perfectly. Overall, the home is now roomier and more efficient, all with very little impact on the environment.

Remodeling in Stages While you may have a grand vision for your remodeling project, time and budget constraints can make it impractical to take on a truly comprehensive overhaul within one short timeframe. As grilling became an American pastime, gas-powered grills were introduced in the 1960s. Arguably more expensive than its charcoal predecessor, the gas grill enticed the mainstream market with its fast, even heating capabilities and easy cleanup. Over the years, as gas grills were perfected, they too became more sophisticated with taste-enhancing add-ons such as flavor bars and chips. And, here we are today, with devotees on both sides advocating for their preferred cooking method. “If you ask both sides what they prefer, the charcoal griller will say there is a huge difference in taste, with charcoal

Summer vacations and back-to-school—Who has time for the garden? If you’ve chosen the right plants, watered and weeded, your garden will make it through August without too much maintenance! Garden Maintenance

➤ Weeding is still at the top of the priority list; treat your lawn for growing weeds now, according to label directions, and plan to apply a pre-emergent product late in the month so that winter weeds won’t get a chance to germinate. In your flower and ornamental beds, pull weeds before they go to seed.

➤ Cut back annuals in the landscape for continued flowering; if they’re in really bad shape, remove them and replant with new plants. Most annuals will continue to flower late into September and October.

➤ Dead leaves under ornamentals can harbor disease and insects. Clean these up BEGIN PLANNING your fall vegetable

â&#x17E;¤ In general, most flowering shrubs can be pruned after they flower. One example is Hydrangea macrophylla (Bigleaf hydrangea); since next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flowers form on old wood, it can be pruned now. Some shrubs bloom

For this landscape makeover, the homeowners desired to create an exciting entrance into their Buckhead townhouse with an enhanced front yard. To achieve this goal, a bubbling stream with a waterfall and pond as well as a large boulder wall, 15 tons of fill dirt and new plantings were added—all within a budget in the $40,000 range. When constructing the boulder wall, loose gravel and a drainpipe were installed behind it to alleviate water pressure—an important safety measure. A weeping Japanese maple serves as the focal point of the renovated landscape with creeping raspberry as groundcover. Where the entry used to feature a sidewalk with a stairway leading straight to the front door surrounded on both sides by mulched plantings and tall bushes, the new entry includes an open lawn area, scaled-down landscaping, a water feature and gently sloping curved pathway to the front door for a more inviting look.
