We knew we needed to have our kitchen remodeled—it was long overdue—however, we wanted a fabulous, AFFORDABLE, new kitchen. We not only got the price we wanted, less than $10,000, we also received products with exceptional quality and excellent customer service. —Brenda & Joe

Q:

What types of plants can I install around my new saltwater pool?

A:

Keep in mind that salt splashing on leaves can contribute to burning the leaves in the sun. Also, salt in the landscape beds is said to rob the plants of moisture, which will also lead to leaf burning. While it is important to keep these points in mind, I personally have not experienced any notable problems by having plantings adjacent to salt pools. There are quite a few plants that are saltwater tolerant. They include: Groundcovers: ivy, lowgrowing juniper, jasmine, verbena, gaillardia and daylilies Annual ornamentals: verbena, begonia, ornamental cabbage and lantana Shrubs: holly, Indian hawthorn, Lady Banks rose, Rugosa rose and some ornamental grasses Trees: Palm trees that can withstand Atlanta winters and Amur maples —Rip Hooker, construction manager, Sunbelt Pools of Georgia LLC

Sanctuary for a Small Space Company: Garden Wonders Location: Lake Claire Approximate cost: $5,500 With a traveling homeowner and only 258 square feet of useable space, this narrowly constructed courtyard became an intimate and calming space that incorporates Asian influences and plant care while the owner is out of town on business—all thanks to the team at Garden Wonders. The project presented quite a challenge, as the outdoor space was limited with two walls that are two stories high and an east-to-west axis that caused severe midday sun exposure and afternoon glare. But the demands of the client were clear: a Japanese Maple had to be included in the plan, and an irrigation system had to be installed to tend to the plants while he was out of town. Concentrating mostly on texture and foliage, landscapers designed this relaxing space by including limited color, hanging baskets with candles and a “fireflies in a jar” lighting sculpture. Drip irrigation, which included a programmable controller, was installed, reassuring the homeowner that his garden would constantly be cared for. Such a small space with multiple challenges goes to show that beautiful landscaping does not always have to be a huge project; rather, it can be an intricate one achieved in any area. From Dark and Dingy to Bright and Beautiful Company: SolTerra Location: Buckhead Approximate cost: $5,000 Located in the Peachtree Hills neighborhood of Buckhead, this oncedesolate and uninspiring yard was brought to life and light with the help of SolTerra Landscape, which added large amounts of bright colors and incorporated more exotic plants in the yard. The homeowner wanted to rid the yard of the overgrown plants and shrubbery that were great eyesores. SolTerra removed everything from the area, excluding the Laurels and evergreen foundation shrubs. A beautiful combination of blooming shrubs, perennials and groundcovers were added, including Knock Out roses, St. John’s wort, dwarf Abelia, Russian sage, iris, Rudbeckia, creeping golden thyme and Sedums. One of the few challenges the landscapers faced was installing a system for erosion prevention. Because the yard is on a slope, the team used boulders of varying sizes to prevent erosion. The boulders also add decorative interest to the landscape. Now the homeowners, as well as their neighbors, talk about this fancy and fun yard being the highlight of the street. Budgeted for Entertainment Company: Chadworks Location: Braselton Approximate cost: $100,000 Located in a neighborhood known for good wine and beautiful weddings, this Chateau Élan home was suited for anything but entertainment—a characteristic the homeowners wanted to change. They wanted a new backyard to entertain guests and provide constant enjoyment. By putting their trust into Chadworks, as well as Greg Dunkle of Wahoo Pools, the owners were able to transform their originally barren landscape into the yard of their dreams. With such a flat and void area, Chadworks and Wahoo Pools were able to add some amazing additions to help the owners entertain, including the pool with overflowing waterfall, an outdoor kitchen and plenty of space around the pool to mingle. Chadworks installed elaborate stonework on and around the pool, as well as the pool deck, adding a rustic yet classic look to the yard. The team also performed much-needed grading and drainage, as well as landscaping. The outcome of this project is immaculate—the homeowners can now enjoy their newly constructed entertainment sources, from pool to BEFORE outdoor kitchen and waterfall to lounges, with complete satisfaction. Enhancing the Existing Company: Florapolitan Location: Atlanta Approximate cost: $5,000 In hopes of revamping and recreating a beautiful yard, the owner of this home sought the help of experts at Florapolitan. The homeowner wanted to fix what he already had and needed help with the mature trees that had become diseased over the years. New specimen trees were added to offer color and variety, as well as breadth, to the look of the yard. Numerous varieties of groundcovers, shrubs and perennials were installed, and beautiful pots were added throughout the yard to offer splashes of personality. This dramatic and enticing enhancement didn’t happen overnight, though. After allowing the plants about a year to grow and mature, the yard looks and feels complete and alive—a stark contrast to its former appearance. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT MARCH 2011

All-Around Renovation Company: Shady Grove Landscape Company Location: Johns Creek Approximate cost: $175,000

The owner of this 1970s ranch home in Johns Creek thought it best to renovate her property rather than sell it. Located on a lake and golf course, she wanted to enjoy her location, but fix up the rundown yard. Just 200 feet from the Chattahoochee River System, the house and garage had regularly flooded due to poor design and grading. In addition to flooding problems, other difficulties with this project included preserving and transplanting the existing hardwoods and mature plants, part of which included the owners’ grandmother’s peony collection.

Native-Plant Listing

To combat the problems with flooding, Shady Grove Landscape Company installed a colored concrete driveway with paver apron and permeable paver drainage area, a low rock wall that provides accent—as well as a dead end for runoff coming from driveway—a dry creek bed for permeable paver overflow and retaining walls around the perimeter of the driveway.

Interested in utilizing native, drought-tolerant plants this year, but not sure which plants qualify? Visit the Georgia Native Plant Society website, www.gnps.org, for a seasonal breakdown of Georgia’s native plants, complete with information about when the plant blooms, its color and its habitat.

The home’s backyard received a newly designed staircase, as well as a permeable paver courtyard with new fencing and gating, a permeable flagstone patio surrounded by a seat wall and a permeable flagstone walkway to help with drainage from another patio on a higher level. With a new landscape and solutions to her former problems, the homeowner couldn’t be happier.

POOL & SPA What restrictions does your local building code have regarding pool and spa installation? Check with your local building-inspection department, office of planning and zoning, and/or department of permits. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________

Pool & Spa Safety Tips •

A minimum 4-foot-high enclosure should isolate the swimming pool at all times. Even if the accident happens while strangers trespass in your yard, you can be held accountable and negligible. The fence should not be chain-link, as these are easy to climb.

An impenetrable cover over the pool and spa while the area is not under supervision is one of the best options for ensuring safety.

____________________________________________________

An alarm on doors, fences, in pools and as a clip-on for children can alert you when an unwanted entrance to your pool, spa or hot tub happens.

Are you interested in installing a: swimming pool spa/hot tub swim spa

Keep a telephone outside for fast, easy access in case you need to summon help.

Children should not be allowed in a hot tub until they can stand on the bottom and have their head remain completely out of the water.

Prioritize the following: (1) very important (2) important (3) not important ___low maintenance ___energy efficient ___aesthetics/design ___child-friendly ___healthy, natural water-treatment systems ___size

Children who are big enough to be in a hot tub should not use it for more than 5 minutes at a time at the maximum temperature of 104 degrees. Dropping the temperature to 98 degrees can allow for a few more minutes of soaking, but never more than 15 minutes at a time.

It is recommended that children avoid full-body immersion in hot tubs, choosing instead to sit on “jump seats” that permit waist-high immersion.

and can cause rotting. ❍

Inspect for ice damage: gutters that have pulled away from the home, splits in the seams of downspouts, etc. Fix or replace as needed.

Check the gutters a couple of times during heavy rainstorms. Make sure that they are not overflowing or leaking. Gutters can leak at the seams— inside and outside corners as well as splices—and if they are galvanized steel they will rust and leak, in turn causing the wood behind them to rot.

Windows and doors ❍

Check the perimeter of windows and doors to ensure caulking is still in place. Re-caulk as needed.

Check the sealant or gasket between the window or door frame and its glass. If the gasket is loose, seal the glass to the gasket using a clear silicone caulk to prevent water damage.

Wash and reinstall window screens, ensuring there are no gaps around the screen that would allow insects to enter.

Using a pair of binoculars, inspect your roof for any visible damage, such as shingles that may be starting to curl or mortar on the chimney masonry that may be coming apart. Fix as needed.

Take a walk around your home to look for loose siding, cracked brick, peeling paint or loose trim. Repair as needed.

Clean algae or moss from the roof’s surface.

Inspect exterior vents for openings to prevent rodent intrusion.

Power-wash siding to remove excess dirt and mildew.

Caulk siding joints where old caulk is missing or worn away.

Prune shrubs and trees away from exterior walls and the roof to avoid insect infestation.

Wash and inspect windowsills for softening or rotting wood.

Roof and facade ❍

A French drain is a sub-surface drain (installed approximately 3-4 feet underground) that is designed to catch water moving underground from around the home and redirect it via drain pipes to the street gutters. These are best to install in the spring, when the ground is soft and easy to work with. Always use drain rock to backfill and a drain sleeve to minimize silt buildup inside the drain—never use sand for backfilling, as this will clog the drain and impede water flow. The tools required for this project range from a pick and shovel, to an auger designed for trenching, to a mini backhoe rental, depending on the size of the trench needed and the type of soil you have.

If you have solar panels, schedule a cleaning. Dirt can impair the solar

Create a Mail Center COST: $0-$700 Create a space for sorting mail, including cubbies for things to take action on (bills to pay, items to reply to), a recycling bin for throwing away envelopes and junk mail and an organization board for posting reminders, calendar items, etc. This can be done with existing items in your home or it can be custombuilt to fit any space. By practicing simple strategies on a regular basis, your papers will stay organized, your bills will be paid on time, and you won’t miss an event you never RSVP’d to because it got stuck in the paper pile. —Ginny Snook Scott, vice president of sales and marketing, California Closets

cells’ ability to receive the full benefit of the sun, reducing generation by up to 40 percent.

Install a Flood Alarm Patios, porches and decks ❍

Power-wash the patio, porch and deck to remove excess debris. Or, to save water, use a waterbroom (www.waterbroom.com).

Paint or water-seal all exterior wood, including decks, overhangs and railings.

Trim back vegetation around patio covers and railings to avoid storm damage.

PROJECTS:

Inspect all railings for rot or loose bolts. Fix as needed.

Look for raised nails and split wood and repair as needed.

The freeze-and-thaw cycle may have changed the slope of concrete slabs. Ensure that your sidewalks, patios, driveways, etc. are sloping away from the house to avoid water damage. If needed, slabs can be re-elevated or rebuilt by a professional.

Re-point or replace grout in the cracks of a stone veneer patio. Every winter, water will creep into the cracks, freeze and exacerbate the cracking until the stones loosen.

Fill or patch any cracks or spalling sections of concrete.

Check brick-paved areas for damaged, settled or heaved sections and repair/replace as needed.

Check flashing where the deck and the house meet for damage or deterioration. Fix as needed.

Apply anti-skid coating to any exterior steps.

Check the roof of covered porches for leaks and make sure that all of the gutters are working properly.

Check your irrigation pipes for leaks and damage that could have occured during the freeze-thaw cycle.

Run your irrigation system and check the heads to eliminate wasted water and damaged landscaping.

Check your local watering restrictions and make sure you set your timer accordingly.

Inspect pipes between the spigot and shut-off valve for signs of frost damage or splits in the pipes. Also check for separated joints. If all is fine, turn on the valve inside your home and connect your exterior hoses.

COST: $30

Check all exterior outlets and faucets for cracks and leaks. Repair as needed.

Start by sanding the surface of the door and then apply a coat of primer. Choose a new, inviting color and apply at least two coats of paint (recommendation: Ace Hardware’s Cabinet and Trim Paint works well for this project). Allow each coat to dry to achieve a spray-paint finish with a brush.

Install yellow lights in outdoor fixtures. Yellow lights attract fewer flying insects and spiders.

Remove piles of wood, stone or other debris from around the house to avoid rodent, insect or spider infestation.

Inspect and replace any broken or malfunctioning exterior lighting, and reset your lighting timers to coincide with the longer spring days.

Check all fencing and retaining walls for shifting or damage and repair as needed.

Clean filters of pond, water-filtration and water-storage systems.

Paint an accent color in one or more rooms as a quick and easy way to refresh any space for the season. Another way to infuse color is with a bold accent rug or runner. Consider carpet squares for versatility. —Chip DeGrace, vice president of creative strategy, FLOR Inc.

Improve Indoor Air Quality COST: $5,000-$20,000 Wet crawl spaces are the worst contributors to poor air quality in the home. If you have one, then encapsulate it. The price will range dramatically depending on the state and size of the crawl space. Take this one seriously. ✓ FRESH AIR INSIDE AND OUT The EPA has named indoor air pollution one of the top five environmental risks to public health. Clean the air in your home. Add carbon dioxide detectors near gas appliances. Effective units can be inexpensively purchased and plugged into wall outlets. Replace air filters and consider adding a whole-house purification unit to your HVAC system. They will dramatically reduce the amount of particulates in the air you breathe. When you are spring cleaning, consider using natural cleaners or simply water and vinegar. Most household cleaners contain known carcinogens. —Frank A. Wickstead, president, WicksteadWorks

PROJECT:

When cleaning to eliminate germs, remember that spraying and wiping isn’t enough—the disinfectant needs to remain on the surface being cleaned for up to 10 minutes to effectively kill lingering germs and bacteria. —Marie Stegnar, consumer health advocate, Maid Brigade

Fully or Partially Replace Windows COST: $200-$700 per window If you see condensation or frost, feel a heavy draft when you’re near a closed window or notice that the trim is rotting or the glass is cracked in any area, it is likely time to replace your windows. Replacing all or some of the windows in your home has many benefits, including increased curb appeal, resale value and lower utility costs. —Ed Cholfin, President, AK Complete Home Renovations

Exercise water-supply valves (turn them back and forth) under sinks and toilets to prevent them from sticking.

Clean mineral deposits from showerheads by unscrewing the devices and soaking them in vinegar overnight, then gently scrubbing them with an old toothbrush.

Check washing machine, dishwasher and icemaker supply hoses for bulges or leaks. Replace hoses showing signs of weakness or those older than 10 years.

Use a plumber’s snake tool to remove hair and other blockage in your tub and sinks.

Inspect your tile walls and replace any missing caulk or grout.

If you have aerators in your faucets, remove and clean them.

Clean the inside of your toilet tank to ensure you have clean water in the bowl and that it operates properly.

Check the filter on your range hood. Clean or replace as needed.

Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible in the kitchen and garage, and be sure to periodically test it.

Check the flame pattern on gas burners for a blue-green base. If you have white or mostly yellow flames, arrange for a professional adjustment.

Clean refrigerator coils. The refrigerator needs to be cleaned once a year in the areas you never see. Consult your owner’s manual to locate the coils.

WORLD!

Open up your home to the latest in windows and doors By Laura Judy

Homes are all about personality, and it’s often the details that make the difference. Whether you want to provide a gorgeous entrance for your guests or just want to open up your home to let the outdoors flow in, windows and doors are important— and necessary—accessories to any house. “Windows and doors can determine the style of the home, whether it’s craftsman, Tudor, cottage, colonial or contemporary,” says Tim Beattie of Pella Southeast. 48

Stylish Screens Form and function meet in today’s hottest screen trend: the retractable variety. “Our best-selling products for doors and windows are retractable screens,” says Michelle Johnson, sales and marketing manager for ECC/CoolScreens. “They’re popular because they’re there when you need them, but disappear when not in use.” Johnson says that retractable screens are great solutions for patio doors, single doors,

garage doors, French doors and windows.

From natural materials to synthetics and neutrals to custom colors, there are plenty of ways to customize the right windows and doors for each entryway and room in your home.

Statement window or door One of the best ways to welcome visitors to your home is with an attention-grabbing door or window in your entryway. “A statement window or door is one that is used as a design element, such as an 8-foot mahogany front entry or a great room window grouping that becomes the picture frame of a beautiful view,” Beattie says. Another way to make your front door unique is with color—paint the door a different shade from the rest of the house; just make sure to pick a color that stands out without screaming out.

Color The good news about color is that anything goes for windows and doors—both light and dark shades remain popular in the Southeast. “White is still the most-used color for windows in Atlanta,” says Peter Diehl of Architectural Visions Inc. (AVI), a Marvin Window Design Gallery in Alpharetta. “Earth tones, such as gray and bronze, are also in.” Subtle greens and blues are other popular choices, and many homeowners are choosing the exact colors they want. “Custom color matches are being requested quite often,” says Maurice Duvic, general manager of Chattahoochee Windows & Doors LLC. “The cost of custom colors has been reduced in recent years.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Wood alternatives When it comes to materials, many Atlanta homeowners are using nonwood products, which often require less maintenance. “The Atlanta area seems to be notorious for buildergrade windows and doors that tend to show signs of rot within the first five years or so,” says Alan Missroon Jr., president of 3AM Windows & Doors. “Homeowners want products that won’t deteriorate over time, but still hold up to their standards of form, function and style.” Vinyl and cellular PVC windows are popular, as are composite materials such as Fibrex,

Depending on the location/neighborhood, many homeowners are considering security issues when installing new windows. Most windows come with “standard” single-, double- or triple-strength glass. Each of these has an impact on thermal and sound properties. However, any of these can easily be broken—with a baseball bat, crow bar or any other tool a burglar might use. As an alternative, we’ve had a number of homeowners request laminated glass. This is an upgrade that has been stress-tested and provides a high degree of security without making the homeowner feel like they live in a prison. —Alan Missroon Jr., president, 3AM Windows & Doors

Debunking wood countertop myths Historically, wood has been the favored

but oh, the upkeep! They scratch. They stain. They aren’t water resistant. Many people still hold these perceptions to be true and have passed them down from generation to generation. If that’s your perception of butcher block wood Photo courtesy of Craft-Art Inc. countertops, think again. Today’s wood countertops and islands are so well made that the maintenance is minimal. Check out the following myths to distinguish fact from fiction.

and remained supreme until shortly

Myth: Wood countertops are prone to scratching.

saturated the wood, it would mildew

Truth: No more so than any other countertop. Scratching has to do with the wood finish. Most people scratch their wood countertops when they drag the bottom of an unfinished ceramic flower vase or bottle along the top. Dragging unfinished ceramic or glass surfaces on a countertop will not only scratch wood, but will scratch granite, slate, limestone and solid-surface countertops. If you’re still worried about scratching, consider a butcher block countertop or island of distressed wood.

and eventually turn black.

Myth: Wood countertops stain.

NOTES:_______________________

Truth: Well-made wood countertops use a penetrating Tung oil finish that was originally used to seal ocean-going ships. Because it penetrates into the wood, moisture can’t get underneath. Wipe up stains or water just as you would on any other surface.

______________________________________

Myth: Wood countertops require a lot of maintenance.

______________________________________

Truth: Occasionally, you’ll want to re-oil your countertop with a sealer recommended by the manufacturer to keep it looking its best. This is the same maintenance that is recommended for granite and other natural stone, which requires re-sealing on a regular basis.

______________________________________

Myth: Wood isn’t heat resistant.

______________________________________

Truth: Wood is very heat resistant. In fact, engineered stone is much less heat resistant than wood. Solid-surface countertops are not heat resistant at all, and manufacturers warn against setting anything hot on the surface, as it will melt. Still worried about wood? Specify set-down rods that are installed in the countertop or island near your stove to set hot pots or pans on without worry.

______________________________________

Myth: Wood isn’t resistant to bacteria. Truth: Any surface, whether it is wood, glass or porous granite, can retain bacteria. The real issue is whether homeowners disinfect their tops. No matter what surface you have, if you don’t disinfect it, bacteria will grow on it. 54

after World War II when laminate, otherwise known as Formica, and ceramic tile became two other options for kitchen countertops. In those days, kitchens were in the back of the home where guests rarely ventured. Homeowners entertained in the formal living and dining rooms. So it didn’t matter that their butcher block was an unfinished, raw wood. If coffee spilled on it, it would stain. If water from the sink splashed on it and

That’s not the case today, however, as butcher block wood islands and countertops are sealed to prevent these problems.

covered patio playground for cats.

Many pets love the outdoors, but maintaining your yard when they’re in the picture can be tricky. From keeping your lawn green to choosing the right plants and fertilizers and creating special spaces for pets, there’s plenty to consider when creating a pet-friendly landscape. Lush lawns When reviewing homes’ landscapes, it is often easy to identify where a dog lives—the lawn is usually full of dead brown spots. “The protein in your dog’s diet is broken down and excreted as nitrogen in his urine,” explains Eric Abbey, president of Loving Pets, a leading manufacturer of high-quality, all-natural and affordable pet products. He suggests planting perennial rye or fescue, as these types of grasses tend to be less sensitive to nitrogen when compared to Bluegrass or Bermuda. Another tip: train your dog to use a particular section of the lawn, then dilute the area with water once or twice daily. “Typically, a urine spot will not damage the lawn if diluted with a sprinkle of water within 8 hours,” Abbey says. Keeping your pet well hydrated is another way to dilute the nitrogen in his urine.

Becoming more popular among the feline friendly, as evidenced by the release of catio furniture, catios are on display at www.catioshowcase.com. —Information provided by Marni Jameson, www.marnijameson.com

dog runs Five keys for designing a dog run:

➤ Size. An ideal dog run is 10 feet wide and extends the length of the yard, even for a small dog. Smaller dogs usually have more energy, and will certainly use the same amount of space as larger dogs.

➤ Shape. Perhaps even more important than size, the shape of dog run should be a long rectangle, providing length for the dog to run and expend energy.

➤ Fencing. Chain-link fencing is a great option due to its functionality and affordability, but is not the only option. Wrought-iron or split-rail fencing works just as well.

➤ Shade. If the placement of your dog

run doesn’t provide any natural shade

When deciding what to plant in your landscape, ensure your choices are safe for your pet to ingest. Common plants that are toxic to animals include:

to offer your pet relief from the hot sun.

• Rhododendrons

• Oleander

Also, be sure to keep a stainless-steel

• Agave

• Hyacinth

• Hydrangea

• Wisteria

• Vines

• Ficus

Also be careful of bagged potting soil and mulch that contains cocoa bean (commonly used for its rich color)—the Theobromine in cocoa can be lethal to canines. Safe chemicals Fertilizers and pesticides are commonly used to improve landscapes, but can also be harmful to pets. Fortunately, the selection of products that boast “dog safe” labels is growing. To ensure safety, use pet-friendly products exactly as outlined on their labels, and store the chemicals in an area your pet cannot access. —Information provided by Loving Pets, www.lovingpetsproducts.com, and Marni Jameson, columnist, speaker and author, www.marnijameson.com. 56

➤ Ground covering. While grass is ideal, it can be difficult to keep alive in a dogrun environment. But avoid sand, gravel, and outdoor carpet—instead, look into flex tiles (available at PremierGarage retailers nationwide). Designed for garages and walkways, these snaptogether, durable flooring tiles have an open-faced surface, allowing liquid to drain away in an instant, and offer a soft and cool surface for paws. —Eric Abbey, Loving Pets, www.lovingpetsproducts.com

Building materials such as wood frames, brick, molding, doors or windows can all be reused as long as they are in good shape. and paper, homes also have valuable materials that are worthy of being recycled. Non-structural components, which include windows, doors, plumbing fixtures, home appliances, cabinetry or furniture are easy to separate and preserve. The structural components, which are much more difficult to retain but equally important, require effort to break down. These include wood beams and rafters, framing materials, floor joists, bricks and stones. Keep in mind, however, that it is important to identify hazardous

Reusing items within the home A basic kitchen remodel includes updated cabinets, floors and appliances. If they’re in working condition, there may be other places in your home that could benefit from the old materials. For example, many homeowners choose to convert old kitchen cabinets into storage and shelving units in a garage or basement. Or, they reuse the countertops in bathrooms or other places in the home. Flooring, believe it or not, has multiple uses. It can be reused for its intended purpose or be transformed into doors or decorative ceiling design. Bricks, stone and granite can all be crushed and reused as a backsplash or a fireplace mantel display.

materials that cannot be recycled. These include lead paint, asbestos and mercury. Professional deconstruction specialists are qualified to work in homes that may contain these hazardous materials and can dispose of them safely.

NOTES _______________________________ ______________________________________

Reused materials as design elements

______________________________________

Be creative—the intended purpose for something is not always the best use. For example, with a little disassembly and repainting, wood tables can become a headboard for your bed. Reusing materials makes your home a one-of-a-kind creation that no one could replicate in the same way.

decordemon Red: The bold neutral

Versatile and impactful, red can make a statement in any setting BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN Photos by Sarah Dorio

Beige is boring. There’s a way-more-interesting neutral in town, folks, and it pretty much goes with everything. I’m talking about red, the bold neutral. After three-and-a-half years in the design industry, I recently took a gander at my portfolio and realized just how versatile this color is. Kids’ rooms? Yep. Bachelor pads? Sure. Modern lofts? Mmm hmm. Here’s how this crimson wonder can be used successfully in three different spaces.

A LITTLE OF THIS, A LITTLE OF THAT

When faced with the task of staging an all-white loft for resale, red was my savior in adding high-energy contrast. Since the space was for sale, nothing attached to the property could be outlandish; however, a few pops of red on the sofa with pillows and in the floor with FLOR tiles brought in some temporary personality.

PIECE BY PIECE

A client of mine wanted red throughout her kitchen— especially on the walls and cabinets. Concerned about resale, I talked her into keeping the overall aesthetic— white, silver and black—and punching it all up with a few heavy jolts of red. The solution? One large serving console, small accessories and layers of texture. The painted metal look of the serving console is a bit rough, which juxtaposes beautifully with the clean lines of the metallic wallpaper. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

While red walls are definitely not for the faint of heart, they’re a sure-fire way to bring drama to any space. In an uber-modern bachelor’s loft, I brought in formal and traditional touches with millwork added to the existing drywall. To spice it up, I painted the trim and the walls the same shade of red in a flat finish. The overall look was dramatic and sexy—in a masculine way.

they are dry to the touch and have lost the clammy feel that indicates interior moisture. While you can apply opaque latex stain over latex paint surfaces (the solid-color latex stain is a film-producer, too), Herculean effort is required to strip paint residue should you decide to use transparent or semi-transparent stain on a previously painted surface. march Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Since we’ve weathered Atlanta’s coldest winter temperatures in years, you may be wondering what springtime has in store for us. Brightly colored annuals and summer vegetables are on display at garden centers everywhere—but hold off on planting now, as Atlanta usually experiences a last frost in mid April. Garden Maintenance

➤ Apply a pre-emergent weed killer to control summer weeds in established fescue, zoysia, centipede and Bermuda lawns this month. Read and follow product labels carefully. Do not apply pre-emergent to newly seeded fescue lawns.

➤ Mow liriope now. Using a lawnmower, cut to about 2-3 inches—the new growth will be fresh and green.

➤ Finish pruning and fertilizing evergreen and summer-flowering shrubs and trees before new growth begins. Roses and fruit trees also can be pruned now.

➤ Shrubs that flower in the spring, such as azaleas, quince, spirea and forsythia, should be pruned and fertilized after they flower.

PRUNE AND FERTILIZE SPIREA after the

plant flowers this month.

➤ Winter- and spring-blooming bulbs should be fertilized after they bloom with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Resist the urge to cut off the unsightly leaves; rather, let

them yellow and die naturally. Try planting other coolseason flowers—such as snapdragons or dianthus— among the bulbs to hide the unsightly foliage.

➤ Now is the time to prune ornamental grass. To make the entire plant, pull tight and slice across the top of the cord or rope. You’ll have an even cut, and the resulting grass will look neat and clean. Don’t fertilize most ornamental grasses; they’ll flop over.

➤ Many fruit trees require a careful spray program throughout the year. Ensure success by contacting your county extension service for detailed information about planting, fertilization, pest control and pruning.

➤ Boxwood and holly can be infested with leaf miners in late winter. Look for these flying, gnat-like insects, and control them with an insecticide that specifically treats them. What to Plant

➤ Plant bare-root roses and shrubs now, while still dormant. Rehydrate them before planting by soaking their roots in a bucket of water for one hour.

➤ There’s still time to plant shrubs and trees, but pay close attention to the amount of rain that we get; if it doesn’t rain, water deeply once a week throughout the spring and summer.

➤ Dig, divide and transplant summer and fall blooming perennials now.

➤ Buy caladium bulbs now, but wait until late April or early May to plant—the soil needs to be at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or the bulbs might rot.

➤ Fescue seed and sod can be planted and installed in March, but wait until late spring/early summer to sod zoysia, Bermuda and centipede lawns.

➤ Cool-weather veggies (radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce) can be planted from seed in early March, as they can withstand cooler temperatures. Plant Irish potatoes early in the month, too.

editorialresources What types of plants can I install around my new saltwater pool?

Keep in mind that salt splashing on leaves can contribute to burning the leaves in the sun. Also, salt in the landscape beds is said to rob the plants of moisture, which will also lead to leaf burning. While it is important to keep these points in mind, I personally have not experienced any notable problems by having plantings adjacent to salt pools. Safe and Secure

Depending on the location/neighborhood, many homeowners are considering security issues when installing new windows. Most windows come with “standard” single-, double- or triplestrength glass.

Statement window or door One of the best ways to welcome visitors to your home is with an attention-grabbing door or window in your entryway. “A statement window or door is one that is used as a design element, such as an eight-foot mahogany front entry or a great room window grouping that becomes the picture frame of a beautiful view,” Beattie says. • FLOWERS Yellow daylilies, lantana, pink gumpo azaleas, gardenia, liriope and iris

• ROCK MATERIALS Square wall rock, natural moss-covered ornamental boulders and river rocks from Tennessee rock quarries.

The owners of this Alpharetta home wanted to make use of the wasted and unsightly space in their backyard and called upon the pros at Outside Landscape Group to get the job done. What was once a large, dirt slope just outside of the homeowners’ main living space was transformed into a beautiful water feature that became the focal point of the entire home. The pond basin is approximately 6x12 feet wide and 24 inches deep, with two waterfalls—one with a 3-foot drop and the other with a 5-foot drop. With these cascading twin waterfalls and a large pond basin for blooming aquatic plants and colorful Koi, this new outdoor installation has put new life into a formerly barren landscape.

Staycations Atlanta’s Most Exquisite Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is the concept of creating functional outdoor spaces or “rooms,” extending your living space from within your home into your outdoor environment. More and more of us are choosing to stay home and vacation in our own backyard. Adding an outdoor living room complete with grill, refrigerator, fireplaces, water features and comfortable seating areas is like creating a resort on your own property. With outdoor lighting, landscape plantings, pavilions and pools, we may never want to leave home again. Our designs can help you take advantage of Georgia’s ideal climate for outdoor living.
