The Office of Inclusive Design for Equity andAccess would like to thank current and former team members for their support and hard work in coordinating the mini-grants program.

Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions Ensuring Inclusivity in Watts

In a statement about ensuring inclusivity in Watts, Dean Lietz shared the following: Engaging in specific actions that are anti-racist remains essential to our ability to move forward, because adopting an anti-racist lens centers race when considering oppression; it acknowledges and seeks to combat our nation’s long history of violence and discrimination against Black, Indigenous, Latinx andAsian communities. Our commitment to approach our work on a daily basis from an anti-racist perspective must never cease. By saying we are advancing an anti-racist,AND anti-oppressive approach, it allows us to call out the need to ensure safety, respect, and inclusion of students, staff, and faculty as it relates to multiple identities that can lead to oppression. We are working to advance a truly welcoming and inclusive work and learning environment across the intersecting ways we define ourselves.
As we initiated the implementation of this commitment to an anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach, the most important early action was appointing an associate dean of Inclusive Design for Equity andAccess (IDEA). To support her work, a set of graduate students were appointed as IDEAscholars to work withAssociate Dean Chandra Crudup to advance initiatives that combat racism and oppression in the college. These student leaders not only expand our capacity, but they bring perspectives that have been essential to understanding how best to move forward.The creation of this role and office has allowed us to move from talking about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to engaging in actionable steps that allow us to advance this approach.
The IDEAoffice also created a mini-grant program that invites faculty, staff, and students from across the college to submit proposals for a modest level of seed funding to support ground-up work to help create an inclusive work environment.This, coupled with the RaceTalk Circles initiative, has created space for our community to have important conversations about race, a topic that is often avoided.
To advance an anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach in our work and learning environments, we have to first be able to have open and honest conversations about race.All of these efforts have created not just space for conversation, but also ideas that are leading to direct actions that seek to dismantle systems of oppression and name and address micro-aggressions that occur in work or learning spaces.

do this through inclusive practice, by embracing the evolving nature of this work to design and support initiatives with Watts’students, staff, faculty, and community partners
IDEAMini-Grants
The IDEAoffice supports the advancement of Watts College’s commitment to being an anti-racist (AR) and anti-oppressive (AOP) college and putting theASU Charter and Watts CollegeAspirations into action. One way this is achieved is through the Watts IDEAMini Grants, which provide modest seed funding to members/groups/ projects within the Watts community to support building a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible Watts community. In 2023, a total of x projects were submitted for review.These applications were reviewed by members of the IDEAOffice.Three projects were awarded funding, totalling $xxxx in funding. Guidelines in the call for proposals included projects that:
● Create, build, and/or provide space for networking, support, belonging, and mentorship for Watts community members (employees and/or students) that have a common identity
● Create space to deepen understanding of structural inequities by educating and building individual capacity for conversations about race, oppression, and intersecting identities
● Empower participants to share knowledge and resources while developing a safe space engage in advocacy work that leads to systemic change within their units, college, university, or community
● Infuse historical and contemporary content on race, oppression, inclusion, equity, and access into teaching/pedagogy
● Supports a focus on inclusion, equity and access in research projects, policy reform, mentorship programs, group activities, or events:
1) funding for speaker honorariums
2) funding to support small research projects,
3) activity and event funds,
4) community networking/hosting of meetings or forums

ILAworks to build leadership capacity for urban and tribal community members in the Southwest.
“The expanded ILAprogram will afford participants the opportunity to explore issues and find ways to make a positive difference for Indigenous people in urban and reservation communities within an IDEAlens.The concept of the proposed ILA“IDEA”” program is to integrate anti-racism and anti-oppression concepts within each of the ten-ILAmodule segments. In doing so, participants will be inspired and motivated in how to execute strategies and lead change in their communities in consideration of IDEAstrategies”

Cohort members benefited from guest speakers who have similar shared life experiences.
“We had Chris James, who is the Executive Director of the National Center forAmerican Indian enterprise development. He's from North Carolina…And he's from the rez. He worked for his tribal community for many years.Two people from our cohort were from his same rez.And one of them… is kind of where Chris James was previously. He works for his tribe, in education. He's trying to like expand, but he doesn't know how. And so…it was a really good conversation that we all got to witness between these two.And they had that mutual connection, of having guest speakers from that rez.” –

What’s next?
ILAheld a strategic planning meeting in February of 2023. Several plans are being explored to expand programming.
“The first idea was to give presentations to our funder, APS, and their NativeAmerican Networking Organization (NANO), hoping that some members would apply to and become a part of the Indigenous Leadership Academy.The second idea was to start aTribal leaders academy or a non-profit leadership academy….Lastly, ILAcould align our funding proposals to Community Economic Development (CED). []as well as]...show how our work is creating a social impact.” –

SPAhosted a listening session to understand and address student concerns regarding inclusive practices.
“We sought feedback from students, alumni and community partners about their experiences withASU and SPA. We asked about any barriers they had and solutions they found that worked, or if they did not find solutions.”

“one of the things that happened as a result of the event is a commitment from the school to have something like this every year,...now we can sort of institutionalize this idea and have an event so that we listen to the students every year and we incorporate that in our plans…we don't just listen once and then decide that we know what's going on. We actually will engage and listen to the students regularly.”

Project Spotlights
Initiative Description
The project was designed to support food insecurity for the South Phoenix community.
“We coordinated with Happy Acres and Florence Crittenton two group homes in the Valley where the majority of children belong to Black, Hispanic, Indigenous andAsian communities. We facilities a workshop with moms of Arizona Democracy Resource Center, a mutual aid organization that advocates and supports justice involved folks. We also participated in the Family Fun Day with Maricopa Village SDA Church, on the Gila River Indian Community”
The group also participated in Earth Day events including the Hines Property Management Farmers Market.
Initiative Impact
The Seed Exchange was able to disseminate hundreds of seed starting pagackages to communities in Phoenix.
“The Seed Exchange was able to share 61 grow kits to GrowAnywhere workshop participants this year so far. All workshops discussed the devastating impact of food apartheid and how food growing and sharing support wellness.”
“Along with grow kits we shared 145 pea plant starter sacks and 300 hundred sunflower seeds for the community.”
What’s next?
Community support is growing as well as the orgnaiztiaons confidence in soliciting funds..
“We are happy to share we received a generous donation of seeds and volunteers to build out kits…. We also have 100% of our board committed to donating towards 20 kits each, this will bring us 100 more kits this year. We have written for more grants and have been able to schedule out more workshops. Our founder is still committed to providing the resources necessary to continue the work she started in 2020.”

Lessons Learned & Challenges
AR/AOPis an iterative process that is informed by many stakeholders and takes significant organizing and self reflection. During implementation of the initiatives, grantees learned a range of lessons that will inform their futureAR/AOPpractice.
Initiative Changes
Participants experienced changes in their project for a number of reasons, such as time constraints, date changes, shifts in speaker availability, changes in finances.
Involved Organizing
Grantees quickly realized organizing these projects takes significant time and effort.
Role Reflection
Engaging Participants
Through their experiences, participants identified their own personal strengths and roles for which they were best suited in their initiatives, including: organizing, creating space for minoritized groups, and leading the initiative
Grantees learned to be strategic when engaging participants, including: flyering, using an online platform, and partnering with otherASU groups that have similar goals to increase initiative reach

InfusingAR/AOPinto their initiative often encouraged a high degree of self-reflection.
One awardee discussed how their initiative led to a deeper understanding of institutional barriers for more groups acrossASU. “[Prior to the initiative] I didn't have an opportunity to step out outside of my process to realize that there were also [career track] faculty and adjunct faculty who are experiencing a lot of institutional challenges and biases that are just as relevant, just as important, and that we actually share some of these similar challenges, and we can come together to support each other.And so I think that's part of what it means to be anti-racist, inclusive, and diverse.” – Lily

It was important to uplift voices of groups that are presently and historically targeted for oppression.
Five of the nine initiatives incorporated guest speakers— 14 guest speakers total— who were able to bring a diverse lens to thinking through, engaging with, and talking about topics such as research, professional development, and advocacy.
Initiatives focused on creating community.
One way or another, all nine initiatives incorporated strategies to expand participants’ networks and build community. Speaking to the importance of this for the Watts Latinx community, Dr. Lechuga-Peña said “It was for former students, current students, and incoming students to create connections among them. [Dr. David Becerra and I] felt it was important for both of us to be there as their faculty advisors and Latinx faculty. We felt representation [was] critical and important. So being at the event gave us an opportunity to engage with the students, meet and connect students who had just graduated the previous year, and were about to graduate, with the incoming students.”
Several participants expressed a need for funding flexibility.
Ultimately, some projects did shift and change overtime. Because of this, having more time to use the mini-grant funding or to request additional funding for unexpected expenses (e.g., fuel costs) was a common concern among participants.
Reflections from grantees revealed a range of overarching themes.

✓ The use of “search this site” should be discontinued. Low satisfaction scores and UX testing results have been found with the use of “search this site”. We should promote content at the top of results with the goal of pointing searchers to the most accurate information on asu.edu for topics related to specific keywords. Completed.
✓ Standardized search tools. Evaluate and reduce existing search tools. Completed.
✖ Revised search engine results page. Based on data, testing and user feedback, we recommend providing a singular (non-tabbed), consistent search experience of asu.edu and all of its subdomains.
Researching
❏ Establish SEO governance board. To improve SEO for asu.edu, and ensure the most relevant results are at the top of the search results, we recommend establishing a governance board around SEO strategy for shared content at ASU. Initial responsibilities of the board would include:
❏ Develop and manage a list of KeyMatches and their results for top-searched keywords across asu.edu.
❏ Identify and monitor requests for KeyMatches. Any conflicting requests for key matches that are related to academics will require provost office review.
❏ Monitor the search results of common, high-value key terms. Make SEO recommendations to ensure search results are optimized and pointing to accurate information.
❏ Optimize Degree Search. As part of the initial web standards project, it was decided that Degree Search was not search optimized to direct traffic to college subdomains.Today, based on best practices and Google search algorithms, we recommend search optimizing Degree Search to improve overall performance and user experience. Studio planned. It is also recommended that a full SEO audit is conducted for Degree Search and changes are made to improve its discoverability.The recommendation includes maintaining ASU’s Degree Search as the single and one true source of degree content through feeds. ❏ Use canonical tags to address duplicate content. For shared feeds such as news, events, degrees and scholarships, it is recommended that canonical tags be implemented on these feed modules within Webspark to ensure that search engines are indexing the native content on sites such as degree search, ASU Events andASU News.
❏ Invest in training. To support the community in growing their SEO knowledge and resources, we recommend investing in SEO training for the community, focusing on best practices and recommendations that will improve the search experience across asu.edu.This includes best practices for reviewing common search terms and optimizing content with these keywords and the voice of the customer in mind.
❏ Further explore new search functionality such as chatbots and voice search. Ateam (led by Bobby Gray) is currently looking into SMS chatbots (texting solution) as an enterprise solution. We may be able to build on that work to create a solution for asu.edu. In process.
