Brian-Kalani Headen Biomedical engineering Class of 2022 Hometown: Tucson, Arizona

Biomedical engineering student Kalani Headen watched movie characters like Robocop and the Bionic Woman and wondered if it would be possible to create similar technology-enabled enhancements for people whose physical functions had been impaired by neural damage.

“My whole life I have desired to help people in any way I can,” says Kalani, “even if it’s a small thing.”

Kalani wants to develop neural prostheses to provide functional and operable limbs that can be controlled by the user, specifically an exoskeletal system that can be used to help treat spinal injuries and monitor the body’s neural system.

“I hope one day I can give everyone a better life than they could’ve imagined,” he says.

When applying to colleges, Kalani narrowed his targets to Arizona State University and a few equally prestigious research universities. He felt his personality and skill set would best be suited to ASU with its top-tier professors who he knew would give him the challenge he needed.

ASU’s diversity also presented opportunities for him to meet people from different backgrounds and to network with them.

“Education will always be important to understand how the world works and how it operates. Regardless of your major, it is important to never let the desire to learn fade away,” Kalani says. “However, do not get so wrapped up in learning everything that you forget to enjoy your college experience and have fun.”

Rachael Shantz

Air traffic management Class of 2021 Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona

Air traffic management student Rachael Shantz always thought that she wanted to leave her home state of Arizona for college, but it didn’t take long for her to realize Arizona State University was the perfect school for her. The combination of having family nearby, familiarity with the area and the unique offerings of The Polytechnic School in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering was too good for Rachael to pass up.

“As it turned out, I only applied to ASU because I knew it was the right fit for me,” Rachael says.

Growing up, Rachael enjoyed playing with air traffic control simulators with her father.

Her curiosity for aviation has helped her build a network and thrive at ASU. Her academic success is enhanced by her role as a Fulton Ambassador.

“I love being an Ambassador because I love being able to help prospective students determine whether or not [The Polytechnic School] is a good fit for them,” Rachael says.

Her favorite part of her ASU experience? The people.

“I have met so many wonderful people at ASU,” she says. “From professors to friends, I have made relationships here that will last me a lifetime.”

After graduating, Rachael plans to pursue a master’s degree in aviation management and human factors through the Fulton Schools 4+1 program, which Rachael says “really provides me with the ability to be well-rounded, so I can decide which facet of aviation I love the most.”

Valentin Madrigal

Aerospace engineering Class of 2024 Hometown: Mexico

Aerospace engineering student Valentin Madrigal, a first-generation college student, transferred to ASU after earning credits at an Arizona community college.

After finishing high school with a low GPA and ACT score, Valentin was convinced he wouldn’t be able to go to college and joined the U.S. Army instead. But after his military service, he worked hard and used the GI Bill to fund his education. “My inspiration for pursuing higher education was to be able to help support my family and my fascination with space travel,” Valentin says.

He took advantage of MyPath2ASU, a set of customized tools that helps create a seamless transfer experience to ASU after a student earns credits or an associate degree from a U.S. community college or university.

With hard work and dedication, Valentin became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the NASA ASCEND space grant program. “My participation in these organizations has helped me become more involved in extracurricular activities, aiding my community and personal enlightenment,” he says.

Valentin really enjoys science and math, and is very interested in space travel. Knowing his ultimate goal — to work in aerospace engineering and eventually pursue a master’s degree — helped him choose his major. “I was also told that [aerospace engineering] was a hard major, which motivates me because I love a challenge,” Valentin says.

Now he tells other transfer students to make sure their classes can be applied toward their degree program and stay connected with their advisor. “My current advisor has been really helpful in guiding me toward the right direction.”
