STUDIO 804
Prof. Dan Rockhill Fall 2023 - Present
Studio 804 is a year long graduate level Design-Build studio at the University of Kansas. Over the course of 9 months, students collaborate to design and construct a single family home or similar structure. This experience is holistic in nature, with students taking a design through the permit stage and fully constructing the design on a residential plot. This year’s design encompasses a two story single family home with a detached garage located at 436 Indiana St in Lawrence, KS. As of October 12th, the construction document phase has been completed and the building permit has been approved by the city of Lawrence. Sustainability is a primary focus of the studio, with great efforts made to utilize recycled or ethically sourced materials. A highly insulated building envelope ensures heating and cooling loads are reduced and the use of solar panels helps to offset energy consumption. Studio 804 projects also aim to meet or exceed LEED requirements. 436 Indiana St is expected to be the Studio’s 17th LEED Platinum certified building. My main role in the project is as the electrical lead. This process has involved creating electrical plans, creating a budget and estimates for materials and communicating with the local energy service provider for coordinating electrical service to the meter. In addition to design work, I have begun to create mockups of typical electrical circuit runs that will occur throughout the project.
