MEET CHEF SAMEER KUTHE:
CHEF DE CUISINE AT BAAR BAAR NYC
Chef Sameer Kuthe’s culinary journey began in India- in Bombay, where he was raised, and later continued in Pune, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management from Pune University. His professional career took off in 2002 when he joined Mumbai's JW Marriott flagship property. There, he gained invaluable experience working across a variety of specialty restaurants. These included Mezzo Mezzo, an Italian fine-dining establishment, Cross Training at Saffron - Indian Restaurant, and the Lotus Café, a 24-hour coffee shop within the hotel. This foundational period helped shape his early approach to Indian and international cuisine.
In pursuit of greater opportunities and to broaden his horizons, Chef Sameer moved to London, where his culinary expertise flourished. During his time there, he embraced stagiaire opportunities at several Michelin-starred restaurants. These experiences provided a deeper understanding of haute cuisine and led him to a full-time position at Petrus, a two-Michelin-star restaurant helmed by Marcus Wareing at the prestigious Berkeley Hotel.
Joining Petrus in 2007 was a defining milestone in Chef Sameer's career, solidifying his reputation in the fine dining world. From there, his journey took him through various prestigious establishments in London, from boutique hotels to high-end Mayfair restaurants, further refining his skills and culinary palate. His time in London solidified his unique ability to blend classical European cooking techniques with
his deep-rooted understanding of Indian cuisine. This dual expertise has become a cornerstone of his culinary style. It has positioned him at the forefront of the evolving Indian food scene, particularly as Indian cuisine begins to gain greater traction across the pond in the U.S.
Throughout his career, Chef Sameer has worked alongside renowned chefs like Chef Sujan, collaborating on several projects in London and Dubai. Notable among these was the Pop-up at the Hyatt Andaz in Liverpool Street, which featured a modern Indian tasting menu, and the launch of Tresind Restaurant in Dubai, known for its avant-garde approach to modern Indian fine dining.
In 2022, Chef Sameer relocated to New York City to take on the role of Chef de Cuisine at Baar Baar NYC. In this position, he oversees all operational aspects of the restaurant, ensuring that each dish maintains the innovative yet authentic spirit he is known for. Chef Sameer’s deep commitment to blending traditional flavors with modern culinary techniques continues to define his work at Baar Baar, where he leads a team dedicated to elevating the Indian dining experience in the heart of New York City.
"I aim to create new approaches to Indian cuisine while maintaining classic flavors. Indian cuisine is just beginning to gain traction in the US market. Traveling between London and New York keeps me connected to the latest trends on both sides of the Atlantic. Currently, the US market is about 10 years behind the UK in this regard, so I focus on keeping food simple yet innovative." - Chef Sameer Kuthe
MEET THE ICONIC SHALINI PASSI FROM NETFLIX SERIES
“FABULOUS LIVES VS BOLLYWOOD WIVES”
Shalini Passi is a Delhi-based Art collector; Art, Design, and Fashion Patron; Philanthropist; Art and design advisor, and Artist. She is the founder of MASH, a digital platform that explores the intersection of architecture, art, craft, design, and fashion in an accessible and engaging format, and also founded & conceptualised the Shalini Passi Art Foundation.
Furthering her commitment to philanthropic endeavours, in June 2023, Passi started her journey with UNICEF as a Champion for Children, advocating for the rights of children and young adults striving to create a better future.

This new venture marks a notable addition to Passi’s diverse portfolio, showcasing her versatility and expanding her presence in the entertainment industry. The entire proceedings of all the money that Shalini Passi made from her television debut in “Fabulous Lives VS Bollywood Wives” on Netflix was donated to UNICEF to further their joint mission of enhancing childcare missions in Purnea, Bihar.
Shalini Passi in an exclusive conversation with Richa Grover, Executive Editor of Aspire:The New Age Asian Magazine, London.
Q. What motivated you to participate in The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives?
SP- I wanted to start a travel and an art show — traveling all over India, showcasing India’s incredible art, craft, designs, and all the beautiful places and destinations of our country. That did not pan out, as the audiences for this kind of show are very niche. But I was offered ‘Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives’ by Karan and I decided to go for it as I love new experiences, and this was something very new to me, and I quite enjoyed it.
Q. What was the most unexpected or surprising part of being on a reality show?
SP- The most unexpected or surprising part of reality is that it gets you in touch with your own emotions. And I think that something is so important, I did not anticipate that.
Q. How do you balance being a public figure and maintaining your private life?
SP-I socialise very less. I prefer to go to events and more work-related dinner parties and functions. When I’m with my family I’m a very private person and I prefer to keep it that way.
Q. As a fashion-forward individual, how do you decide what to wear on and off the
screen? What’s your go-to fashion advice for women looking to feel confident and stylish?
SP-I think it’s most important to feel comfortable in your outfit and be appropriately dressed for the occasion and for the place that you are going to. I think confidence comes when you know that you are a secure person. You have to be secure from within and that will reflect in your personality and your outlook.
Q. How do you stay grounded despite the fame and attention that come with being in the media spotlight?
happy and make them understand my way of life. I would love for people to understand the causes that I care about, things that are important to me, and would love their support in it — whether it’s in contemporary art or philanthropy. I hope to keep working and maybe do some more interesting projects. I wish to make films on Indian women artists, so hopefully that will also be coming soon.
Q. How did your journey into art collecting begin? Was there a specific moment or artwork that sparked your passion?
SP-Well, my collecting journey started when I was young because I used to paint.
an intricate, almost mystical expression of nature, showcasing her unique mastery in fibre art.
Q. You have an impressive collection of contemporary art. How do you decide which pieces to add to your collection? What criteria do you use?
SP-My approach to collecting art is deeply intuitive and personal. I look for pieces that evoke a strong emotional response or provoke thought — the artist’s vision, originality, and the ability to challenge conventional boundaries are crucial criteria. I am also drawn to works that reflect contemporary issues, pushing the narrative forward and opening new dialogues in the art world. Supporting emerging artists and those with unique perspectives is also important to me.
Q. How does art play a role in your personal life? Does your collection reflect your personality, or does it represent something deeper for you?
SP-Art is an integral part of my life; it’s a reflection of my personal journey and inner world. My collection reflects my experiences, values, and emotions. It reflects my personality in its diversity and boldness, but it also represents something deeper — a quest for understanding, connection, and a dialogue with the ever-changing world around me. Each piece holds a story, a memory, or an idea that resonates with me on a very personal level.
SP- I believe that fame and attention is something which is passing, it is just a byproduct of being famous. People are attracted to good energy, and one should keep the energy on and keep doing their work and get more and more people involved in your cause, and share the spotlight with everybody.
Q. What kind of impact or legacy do you hope to create and leave in the entertainment world?
SP- This is a really tough question, because I’ve just started my journey in the entertainment world and hopefully I’d love to make people
My teacher in modern school had many eminent artists as his friends like Mr. B.C. Sanyal and Manjit Bawa who came regularly to the art room in the modern school and that’s how my art journey actually began. And I grew up looking at the works of modern masters in various galleries in Delhi and museums. One of my favourite pieces by Mrinalini Mukherjee is her fibre work “Kusum” from 1996. Created using hemp, this artwork’s flower-like form exudes both delicacy and strength, capturing Mukherjee’s ability to blend organic beauty with monumental scale. I’m drawn to how Kusum transforms humble materials into
Q. Do you see art as a form of investment, or is it more about personal passion and expression?
SP-While art can indeed be a valuable investment, for me, it is primarily about passion and personal expression. The emotional and intellectual engagement with a piece is what drives my interest. I think art has the power to inspire, challenge, and transform, which is far more significant to me than its financial value. My collection is my love for creativity and my desire to foster a deeper understanding of the human experience.
Shalini Passi has received immense admiration and recognition following the release of her show. She has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including NDTV Indian of the Year -Breakthrough Celebrity of the Year, NDTV Influencer Awards -Breakthrough Star of the Year, and the Devi Award by The New Indian Express for her outstanding contributions to the art and culture landscape. CONVERSATION WITH MADHOO SHAH: A JOURNEY THROUGH CINEMA
Actor Madhu Shah opens up about her career, the evolving film industry, and her experiences in a candid interview with Richa Grover, CEO of Aspire Magazine.
RG-What inspired you to pursue a career in acting, and how did you get your start in the industry?
MS- This question takes me back 35 years! I've always been surrounded by art—my mother was a Bharatnatyam dancer, and I grew up in an environment filled with dance and music. Although I initially doubted my path but destiny had its way. My father became a producer, and through a series of fortunate events, I was discovered by a director, which led to my acting debut. Despite many setbacks, including being replaced in an initial film, I was determined to prove myself and eventually found my place in the industry.
RG-You’ve played a variety of roles over the years. Which character has been your favorite and why?
MS- While I’ve been appreciated for my serious roles like in Phool Aur Kaante and Roja, my personal favorite is comedy. I haven’t had many chances to do full-fledged comedy, but I loved doing slapstick comedy in films like Hatkari with Govinda and Mr. Romeo with Prabhudeva. The humor and timing in those roles were so much fun for me!
RG-How have you seen the industry evolve since you started your career?
MS-When I began in the 90s, the industry was less organized, and I worked almost every day, with over 60 films released in my first 9 years. Back then, movies had smaller budgets, and many were shelved. Today, the industry is more structured, and the scale has changed drastically with larger budgets and global reach. Indian cinema has become unified, with actors from different languages now enjoying national recognition. The globalisation of Bollywood and the rise of streaming platforms like Zee5 have allowed films to be appreciated worldwide, breaking down language barriers.
RG-What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of acting?
MS- I'm a student of life, learning from every relationship and experience. I focus on personal growth, like learning not to take "no" personally. I also spend time on body work, like yoga, and I love watching movies to improve my acting skills. I study performances across eras to stay current, as acting styles evolve. I enjoy learning from all genres to keep refining my craft.
RG- What challenges have you faced in the film industry and how did you overcome them?
MS- I focus on what works, not the challenges. As a woman actor, the biggest issues were comfort, like lack of proper facilities back in the day while shooting. In the past, we had to work in difficult conditions, like limited access to basic amenities. Over time, things have
improved, and these challenges have become less of an issue. The industry has changed for the better in terms of comfort for female actors.
RG-How do you feel the representation of women in Indian cinema has changed compared to when you started?
MS-When I started, women were often limited to roles of beauty and grace, but *Roja* broke that mould with a powerful female lead. Today, women are portrayed as complex characters, regardless of age, size, or marital status. We no longer have to hide our personal lives or age, and it’s liberating to be seen as an actor first.
RG- How do you balance your professional career with your personal life and family?
MS- I took a break from work to build a home and be a mother. Now that my
children are older, I’ve returned to work, but I still prioritize family. If a project conflicts with something important in their lives, I consider it carefully. Balancing is tough, but when you love both your family and your work, there's no regret in your choices.
RG- What advice would you give young actors trying to break into the industry?
MS-If you have the desire to be an actor, believe in it wholeheartedly. Don’t let self-doubt or anyone tell you it’s not possible. If you truly want it, go for it. Don't let anyone define your potential.
RG- What kind of legacy do you hope to create in the film industry?
MS-I don't see myself as prolific enough to discuss legacy like some iconic actors, but my hope is to continue evolving as an actor, taking on diverse roles and doing meaningful character work.
SELF-AWARENESS THROUGH KINTSUGI: A HEALING WORKSHOP
In a world that often emphasizes perfection, it can be easy to overlook the value of our imperfections. Yet, the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi offers a profound lesson in embracing the cracks and flaws that make us who we are. “Self-Awareness with Kintsugi,” a transformative workshop, invites participants to explore the beauty of their own personal healing journey through meditation, creative expression, and deep self-reflection.
Rooted in the art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold to highlight rather than conceal its cracks, this workshop serves as a metaphor for the human experience. Just as pottery is mended with gold to create something unique and beautiful, our own “cracks” — the moments of pain, loss, and struggle — can be transformed into sources of strength, wisdom, and growth. This process of self-discovery is both powerful and deeply personal, creating a space where participants can learn to embrace their imperfections and find beauty in their healing.
The workshop begins with guided meditation, offering participants a chance to ground themselves in the present moment. The gentle practice encourages quieting the
mind and creating a sense of stillness, which lays the foundation for deep introspection. In this space of calm, participants are invited to reflect on their life experiences — moments of heartache, loss, and transformation — and see these as integral parts of their personal story. Rather than viewing them as weaknesses, participants learn to view these “cracks” as golden opportunities for selfgrowth and self-acceptance.
What sets the Self-Awareness with Kintsugi workshop apart is its unique blend of artistic expression and personal reflection. Drawing inspiration from Kintsugi, participants are encouraged to create art that reflects their journey. Whether through painting, sculpture, or mixed media, the creative process becomes a tangible representation
of the inner work being done. Each piece, marked with golden veins of resilience, becomes a physical reminder of the participant’s healing journey.
Throughout the workshop, attendees engage in guided self-inquiry and group discussions, cultivating a space of trust and connection. In this environment, vulnerabilities are honored and the lessons hidden within our challenges are celebrated. The beauty of Kintsugi is in its ability to highlight what others might see as imperfections, creating something even more valuable. This is the message that the workshop seeks to convey: that our “flaws” do not diminish our worth, but enhance our uniqueness and contribute to our growth.
By the end of the workshop, participants are not only gifted with a beautiful, hand-crafted art piece but also a renewed sense of selfawareness. They leave with a fresh perspective on their own lives, understanding that their perceived imperfections are part of what makes them whole. VISH DHAMIJA: THE KOHINOOR OF INDIAN CRIME FICTION
Winning the prestigious International Grand Prix for Best Crime Fiction at Cognac in 2024 is just the latest achievement for Vish Dhamija, a man who’s far from a one-hit wonder. He’s not only the first Indian to win this coveted award but also the first Indian legal thriller writer to be recognized among the world’s finest. Dhamija’s *La Magnat* (English: *The Mogul*) was also a finalist at France's Noir Charbon in 2024. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, you might wonder: Where have you been hiding?
Dhamija, a British Indian author based in London, has penned twelve books, earning a reputation as one of India’s foremost crime fiction writers. His works span across diverse sub-genres, from noirs to courtroom dramas, psychological thrillers to crime capers. What makes his writing so distinct is its versatility—his books defy categorization, offering readers an experience that crosses genre lines. Five of his novels have been optioned for screen adaptations, and the first, *Daldal*, is slated for release later this year on Amazon Prime. Based on Dhamija’s bestselling *Bhendi Bazaar*, it stars Bhumi Pednekar in a thrilling tale of suspense and drama.
When asked what led him to crime fiction, Vish is refreshingly candid. “That’s the only genre I’ve read since childhood,” he shares, explaining that his passion for the genre has always been deeply rooted in his reading habits.
But there’s more to his storytelling than crime and intrigue. His narratives are laced
with a sharp wit, andhis subtle humour often peeks through even in the darkest corners of his novels. Dhamija’s sharp observations on society make his work all the more engaging, as readers discover laughter hiding between the suspense.
Besides his literary accomplishments, Vish is an avid golfer, boasting a handicap of “two... on every hole.” His passion for art goes beyond literature; Vish is a vinyl enthusiast with a diverse collection of rock, jazz, Caribbean percussion, and Bollywood. His profoundappreciation for creativity nurtures his multifaceted personality.
Although best known for his writing, Dhamija’s life is anything but singular. He arrived in the UK to pursue an MBA at the prestigious Allianz Manchester Business School and subsequently built an impressive corporate career. He held leadership roles at Benetton, Kodak, and Ford. Today, he is the proud custodian of a nursery school in Thanet, an institution that has been in operation
since 1986. His humble approach to this role speaks volumes about his character. “It’s not a business; I don’t own anything—I’m merely a custodian of this establishment that has been running since 1986. I am fortunate to assist future generations,” he states with modesty.
Vish’s personal life adds another layer of intrigue. He is married to Nidhi Singh, the great-granddaughter of Raja Mahendra Pratap, a former royal who served as President of the Provisional Government of India in exile during World War I.
Author, entrepreneur, motivational speaker—Vish Dhamija wears many hats. With his achievements, his humility, and his wide-ranging passions, the question arises: What’s next for this powerhouse of creativity? Whatever it is, you can be sure it will be worth watching.
Vish is a member of Soho House and the Royal Blackheath Golf Club, the oldest golf club in England.

INDIA’S GREATEST HISTORIAN, RAMACHANDRA GUHA, DISCUSSES HIS NEWBOOK
‘SPEAKING WITH NATURE’ AND INDIA’S ENVIRONMENTAL LEGACY
Spanning more than a century of Indian history and decidedly transnational in reference, Speaking withNature offers rich resources for considering the threat of climate change today. Mr Guha (RCG) In an exclusive interview with the Executive Editor of Aspire Magazine, Richa Grover (RG)
RG- In your new book Speaking with Nature, you explore the relationship between humans and nature. What inspired this theme and how do you view the evolution of our connection with the environment?
RCG- This book is a return to my original passion for environmental history, a field I began exploring 40 years ago with my first book on
the Chipko movement. Over time, I delved into political history, focusing on figures like Gandhi, but *Speaking with Nature* brings me back to environmentalism. The book highlights ten individuals who raised early concerns about environmental issues like deforestation and water scarcity, long before climate change was a global topic.
RG-In today's tech-driven world, how can we reconnect with nature?
RCG-Modern technology often isolates us, not just from nature, but also from each other. For example, smartphones, while beneficial, often create disconnection between people. Modern technology individualizes us and detracts from the collective action needed to address environmental challenges. Modernity can be both emancipating and confining. To address environmental issues, we need to foster collaboration, not just between humans, but also with nature.
RG-What do you hope readers will take away from your book?
RCG- This book is about making my research accessible to a broad audience. I hope readers gain a deeper understanding of the environmental dilemmas we face, particularly those rooted in social justice. The book has already been translated into several languages to reach a wider readership. Ultimately, I aim to shed light on these issues in a way that encourages thoughtful discussion and action.
RG- Can individual actions lead to broader environmental change?
RCG-Individual actions certainly matter. Gandhi, featured in my book, demonstrated the power of personal responsibility, living simply and sustainably. Small choices sure can add up. But systemic change requires collective action and scientific research. The environmental crisis is serious and humans now have the capacity for self-destruction. If we recognize this, it could lead to the necessary actions for a sustainable future.
RG- What was your aspiration when writing this book?

* IN CONVERSATION WITH RICHA CHADHA ON PRODUCING SUNDANCE
FILM FESTIVAL-WINNING FILM
*GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS*
*Girls Will Be Girls* is set in a strict Himalayan boarding school, where 16-year-old Mira embarks on a journey of sexual and emotional awakening. Her experience, however, is disrupted by her mother, who never had the chance to come of age herself. Written and directed by Shuchi Talati, the film was produced by Richa Chadha, Claire Chassagne, and Talati, and stars Preeti Panigrahi, Mani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron. Editor-in-Chief Richa Grover (RG) spoke with Chadha about producing this award-winning film.
RG: What inspired you to produce *Girls Will Be Girls*, and what do you hope it achieves?
RC: I wanted more creative control over the stories I’m involved in. As an actor, I’ve often been in situations where marketing budgets and distribution strategies shape decisions, sometimes at the expense of the
story. Producing allowed me to be involved in telling diverse and authentic stories. I want to reach the right audiences, particularly in niche formats, rather than aiming for mass distribution. Filmmaking is becoming democratized, with content creators on platforms like Instagram and YouTube leading the way, and I wanted to be part of that shift.
RG: How does the film explore teenage sexuality and growing up?
RC: The film taps into the universal experience of growing up, especially as a '90s kid. Back then, figuring out how to communicate with your crush—calling on landlines, sneaking conversations late at night—was an art form. *Girls Will Be Girls* addresses teenage sexuality openly and honestly. In India, where comprehensive sex education can be lacking, more conversations about consent, respect, and relationships need to happen. It’s important to discuss sexuality without shame or discomfort, particularly to challenge internalized misogyny.
RG: How does the film challenge traditional narratives about female sexuality?
RC: There’s a global struggle for women’s rights, and *Girls Will Be Girls* addresses this by portraying female sexuality in a positive light. In India, we face societal repression despite worshipping goddesses during festivals. The film shows a young woman’s sexual awakening without shame or repression. Kani Kusruti’s portrayal of the protagonist is beautiful—her performance is tender and respectful, and we were fortunate to discover such a talented actress.
RG: How did the young actress prepare for such a mature role?
RC: She underwent several workshops to prepare. Our casting director, Dilip Shankar, was meticulous in shaping the roles, ensuring that the actors were prepared for their performances. We created a safe space for everyone involved, even with a limited budget. The way the characters are portrayed with maturity, especially the motherdaughter dynamic, makes the film stand out.
RG: How can films like *Girls Will Be Girls* spark conversations in communities where sexuality is not openly discussed?
RC: In South Asian communities, these conversations may often be avoided. *Girls Will Be Girls* challenges that by depicting female desire authentically and without shame, offering a fresh perspective. It encourages openness about sexuality, which is vital for change.
RG:Do you think India is ready to normalize discussions around these topics?
RC: India is diverse, and it may take time for some communities to accept these conversations. However, I believe English-speaking audiences will connect deeply with this film. The feedback so far has been positive, and I hope it continues to spark important discussions.
