A GOLDEN SPIRIT OF BRILLIANCE:

PAUL JOHN INDIAN SINGLE MALT WHISKY

Hailing from the tropical shores of Goa, along the west coast of India, comes the Paul John single malts, from John Distilleries.

Michael Dsouza, the Master Distiller of John Distilleries started his career at the young age of 21 years. Much of his day is filled with sampling and tasting of batches of whiskies or barrels and the excitement of creating exquisite expressions. Personally he enjoys unpeated whiskies over peated whiskies, but chooses never to compare whiskies, because to him every whisky is different.

Being a Master Distiller allows him to travel immensely giving him the opportunity to meet and know many stalwarts in the industry. The fact that every region and distillery produces different whiskies never fails to impress him. His greatest joy is the appreciation his whiskies are given and winning the recent Icons of Whiskies 2017 Master Distiller/ Blender is one of his memorable achievements.

Established in 1996, John Distilleries grew to be a leading spirit company within less than a decade, not just in India but across the globe. Under the commanding guidance

of Paul P John the company owns a strong portfolio of brands in various liquor categories including whiskies, brandy, and wines.

Today, the flagship brand of the company, Original Choice, is one of the top selling brands in India’s popular segment. It is one of the top 10 selling whiskies in the world with sales exceeding 12 million cases a year.

A path to a new future was laid when Mr. Paul chose to create world-class single malts made in India. Discovering a passion for single malts during the years when he lived in the USA, he appreciated the premium quality of the whisky and soon a dream was born, the dream to create great Indian single malts.

The Paul John Single Malts were launched in the UK in 2012 and were soon acclaimed to be equal to or even better than the single malts produced elsewhere, including Scotland. Approval from single malt enthusiasts and innumerable global awards further proved their excellence. Recognition from the single malt palate encouraged them to take their single malts across the world.

Choosing to visualize the creation of an exceptional single

malt whisky was the start of a trek down a hitherto unknown trail. Years were spent researching and studying the art of making single malts. And soon it was realized that they could do just as well in India.

Craft, skillfully chosen indigenous ingredients and the warm environs of Goa create the magic that is Paul John Single Malt Whisky. Goa was specially chosen as the home of their single malts, not just for its unique micro-climate but also because the destination holds a special place in Mr Paul’s heart.

From the sultry coasts of Goa, the Paul John Indian Single Malts are made from carefully chosen indigenous ingredients – barley, water and yeast – that together create a radiance of a different kind. Goa’s tropical clime offers the ideal temperature and ambience for the whisky to mature to perfection.

A culmination of the graceful union of art with science, the Paul John

Indian Single Malts are made from a vigilantly watched process from the mashing of grains, fermentation, distillation, maturation, vatting and finally bottling.

Paul John Indian Single Malt is nonchilled filtered and there are no additives.Every step of the process, from germination to malting and peating, enhances the distinct smokiness of their whiskies, while the non-chill filter helps retain the original colour and taste.

The various expressions of Paul John whisky are the artistic fusion of Barley, Water, & American Oak Casks and each expression has a significant character of its own.

The range of Paul John Single Malts include an entry level expression, 3 flagship expressions, 4 select casks, an annual Christmas edition, the Zodiac series and the occasional limited or special editions. Today, the Paul John Single Malts are present in over 38 countries.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE WOMB: A GRAPHIC AND CANDID ACCOUNT OF PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD

I want as many people to read my book as possible, I want it to be on bookshelves in men’s loos and waiting rooms at the Gynac’s, I want to normalise talk about vaginas tearing, emotional upheavals and dropping your phone on your baby’s head whilst breastfeeding. I want people’s purest form of unconditional love to be brutally uncensored.

Motherhood can be the greatest job in the world…right? In this unique graphic narrative, readers will find a candid, funny and relatable book on pregnancy and parenting that mothers, expectant mothers, and anyone even thinking about motherhood have been waiting for.

Actor and writer Kalki Koechlin opens up about so much that we don’t talk about-the social stigma of abortions and unmarried pregnancies, the toll that pregnancy takes on a body, the unacknowledged domestic labour of women, the emotional rollercoaster of giving birth, bouts of postpartum melancholy, the unsolicited parenting advice from every corner, and of course the innumerable moments of joy and delight in bringing a real little person into this very world!

With whimsy and compassion, with uproariously funny art and spellbinding honesty, The Elephant in the Womb blends the deeply private with the blazingly political. It’s an eye-opener for anyone who has ever thought that pregnancy was all about the glow and that motherhood was all about fulfilment. From fixing broken parts to enduring untimely farts, Koechlin’s nuanced prose-gorgeously

illustrated by Valeriya Polyanychko-tells us the bare-faced truth about the physiological discomfort and manic expectations that make it a bittersweet experience.

With a combination of personal essays and think-pieces, journal entries captured in real time, reflections and anecdotes, this book on Declarations of a sudden mother, is the motherload! Highly Recommended!

JUNGLE BOOK

REIMAGINED BY AKRAM KHAN COMPANYAT

SADLER’S WELLS THEATRE, LONDON

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Akram Khan presents new dance-theatre production Jungle Book reimagined at Sadler’s Wells on Tuesday 4 – Saturday 15 April. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s family classic, Khan and his team reinvent the journey of Mowgli through the eyes of a climate refugee, the show premiered at Leicester's Curve Theatre in April 2022.

Featuring an original score by Jocelyn Pook, ten international dancers and state-of-the-art animation and visuals by YeastCulture, Jungle Book reimagined tells a story about our intrinsic need to belong and bond with others, placing respect for our natural world at its heart. The show is set in a deserted city which has been reclaimed by nature.

“The Jungle Book’s story has always been close to me. Not only because I had played the role of Mowgli in an Indian dance production at age 10, but more because of the deep lessons it held that I have since carried with me throughout my life. I felt compelled to share its story but the lens of my Jungle Book is one where the dancers' bodies are an archive for nature and the animals threatened by the irresponsible behaviour of humans. I am looking forward to sharing the spirit of this production as a step to remind, to relearn and to reimagine a new world together.”

Sustainability has been a key focus for the creative team. The world on stage is brought to life through projection by Adam Smith and Nick Hillel, allowing the company to tour more sustainably with minimal sets. YeastCulture uses innovative ways to connect the stage, video and the screen into one integrated audience experience.

The set has also been designed with sustainability in mind, made of cardboard boxes, of which some are provided by each tour venue. Visual stage design is by Miriam Buether. The script is by writer and actor Tariq Jordan and dramaturgy is by Sharon Clark. Sound design by Gareth Fry, lighting is by Michael Hulls.

In over 20 years, Akram Khan Company has become one of the foremost innovative dance companies in the world. The programmes range from kathak and modern solos to artist-toartist collaborations and ensemble productions.

ABOUT SADLER’S WELLS

Sadler's Wells is a world-leading dance organisation. Their acclaimed year-round programme spans dance of every kind, from contemporary to flamenco, Bollywood to ballet, salsa to street dance and tango to tap. A COUNTRY CALLED CHILDHOOD: A MEMOIR BY DEEPTI NAVAL

A Country Called Childhood is a beautifully told memoir of growing up in Amritsar in the tumultuous 1950s and 60s by award-winning actress Deepti Naval. In extremely visual and evocative prose, Naval describes an unforgettable childhood filled with love, adventure, mystery, tragedy, and joy. She uncovers, in great detail, life in an unconventional Punjabi family while plunging the reader into the distinctive sights, smells, and sounds of a fast-vanishing India.

Starting at the moment of her birth on a rainy night, she tracks her journey to adulthood, a path punctuated by many personal turning points as also momentous events of national importance, such as the Sino-Indian War of 1962 and the Indo-Pak War of 1965.

Moving and illuminating, A Country Called Childhood shows how Naval’s early love affair with cinema and the experiences of her childhood shaped her career as one of the country’s most admired actors. It’s a must-read memoir and we highly recommend it!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Deepti Naval is an Indian actor, director, writer, painter, and photographer. A multifaceted personality, Deepti Naval has carved a distinct niche for herself in the Indian film industry, winning critical acclaim for her ‘sensitive and close to life’ portrayals that emphasized the changing role of women in India.

Deepti made her debut in the year 1980 with the path-breaking film Ek Baar Phir, and has since appeared in more than ninety films, including Chashme Buddoor, Katha, Saath Saath, Kamla, Ankahi, Main Zinda Hoon, and Mirch Masala. She has received the Best Actor award in several national and international film festivals for her roles in Leela, Firaaq, Memories in March, Listen Amaya, NH10, The Boy with the Topknot, and others.

She also won the Best Screenplay award at the New York Indian Film Festival for her directorial film, Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish, in 2010. As a writer, she has three books to her credit—her first collection of poems, Lamha Lamha, published in 1981, Black Wind and Other Poems in 2004, and The Mad Tibetan: Stories from Then and Now in 2011.

A graduate of Hunter College, City University of New York, Deepti acquired her bachelor’s degree in fine arts studying painting as her major subject along with psychology, astronomy, and American theatre. As a painter, her knife work with oil on canvas is distinctly expressionistic.

THE KING OF SOHO: EXPERTLY

CRAFTED

PREMIUM SPIRITS

The King of Soho represents Hedonism, creativity and fun of London’s Sohoin a bottle! The King of Soho spirits brand was created by entrepreneurs Alex Robson and Howard Raymond, as they looked at a way of capturing the essence and fun of Howard’s iconic father, Paul Raymond. The original King of Soho, he not only revolutionised his neighbourhood, founding iconic clubs such as the Raymond Revuebar and Madam JoJo’s along the way, but played a pivotal role in the cultural and social liberation of British society.

Since the entrepreneur duo decided to launch in 2013 The King of Soho London Dry Gin, is still created in small batches in the heart of the capital. In fact, it’s also created using traditional methods by an 11th generation master distiller whose family’s love affair with gin began in the 1680s.

The spirit has a clean and gentle nose which opens up to reveal classic juniper driven pine notes, with a refreshing twist of grapefruit. Warming, peppery spice ends the journey

with a satisfying nip and a smooth finish, in what is a classically styled gin.

The King of Soho Variorum Pink Gin joined the family in 2018, named in tribute to the creativity and literary works of Soho. A smooth and colourful elixir, notes of strawberry complement the flavours of the original recipe.

In October 2022 The King of Soho welcomed its latest addition, a wonderful new home-grown 'Copacetic Vodka' (the meaning of ‘copacetic’ is ‘exceedingly fine’).

This standout new spirit in its vibrant purple bottle celebrates the ascendancy of vodka in the late 70s and early 80s. Vodka heralded the dawn of the disco era, epitomised by big hair, big flares and big cocktails!

Expertly distilled and crystal-clear it is both subtle and delicate. Surprisingly rich and buttery in the mouth with a gentle delivery, the spirit lives up to its aromatic promise and adds an element of creaminess and some freshly cut apple to the offering.

The initial sweetness gives way to a pleasant dry and light finish making it equally suited as a base for cocktails, as well as for enjoying with a mixer or over ice.

The King of Soho is known for its bold and colourful bottles (vibrant purple, flamboyant red and standout blue) adorned by its iconic ‘Spirit of Soho’ character; a celebration of Soho’s flamboyancy and its reputation as a hotbed of creativity, music and art.

Over the last few years, there has been a significant shift globally in dating behaviour. COMEDY WITH A CAUSEBANGLATOWN

Director Dishad Husain has worked in British Television over 20 years now filming for mostly Documentary and Factual Entertainment shows as varied as Grand Designs, Big Brother, Police Camera Action. However slowly but surely he's been taking his career into Drama and Comedy where his talents really shine.

As a writer and director he made 2 short films "Holly - Bolly' and 'Viva Liberty!' that won a host of awards on the film festival circuit. Naturally the next move was to go into features. But funding opportunities for features are difficult to come by and so he formed a production company of his own - a collective called Imotion.

People love films told with passion. A film has to have a beating heart, a soul. A good story is nothing without characters that you care for. Making a film is tough and making a independent film is even tougher. The only thing that will keep you going as a film maker is that fire, the desire to share, to entertain and maybe educate too. Hopefully that comes across and connects with the audience. They might not be as polished as the big budget affairs but indy films shine just as bright!

A collective that would go on to make "Banglatown", a story about a struggling actor who starts working for a local Gangster who is being hounded by the Police. Working with some incredible talents over the years Dishad selected a very strong diverse cast.

The South Asian female actresses are From the formidable Police Detective Mirza played by comedian Sajeela Kershi to plucky shop owner Mama Chips played by Sanchita Dan. Two young actresses making waves in the industry also play a key roles Soni Bhalla and Nikkita Chadha. Sajeela is a British South Asian award winning stand up comedian who has worked with Dishad on many comedy

projects over the years. They met at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in the early 2000's and have a hilarious working relationship.

Dishad ‘Sajeela is so unpredictable on set! One minute she'll turn up with a selection of home made sandwiches and another she'll go completely off script because of her gut instincts. She's been doing comedy projects with me for years now. We've done live comedy shows with dodgy comedy promoters, massive productions for cultural festivals and we try to help each other out as much as possible in our respective careers. The industry is a tough one and having good people around you is really important' Sajeela ' Dish came to me years ago with the idea for making 'Banglatown' which was called something completely different back then. My child who was a teenager helped read some of the script to development stage. The film production took so long, he is now a grown adult! But Dish put him in the film and it's come together marvellously we've had a great time making the film and it's testament to Dish that a big part of film making is having sheer tenacity and that singularity of vision to keep going after all these years!'

So Banglatown is doing well on the Film Festival Circuit - it premiered to a sell out London Cinema for the Raindance Film Festival. It then went on to play at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and is due to go to Nottingham and Bali in the next few months. Currently in talks with distributors and the hope is to give us enough momentum to go into the next feature project this year.

What's next for the Director? Plans to film with some Bollywood legends, a cowboy film set in Bangladesh and India. Watch this space - as the tag line to Banglatown goes - You can't fight progress!

Shri Ram established new benchmarks in labour welfare, education and business innovation that was hitherto unheard in the Indian business space.

IT’S NOT JUST CURRY!

Anoothi Vishal and Camellia Panjabi explore the culinary ties between India and the UK at Veeraswamy, the oldest Indian restaurant in London.

Anoothi Vishal, one of India’s well-known culinary historians and authors, and Camellia Panjabi, author and restaurateur, recently created a unique experience to explore the culinary interaction between Britain and India over the last 250 years, that has reshaped modern Indian as well as the UK gastronomy on the anvil of King Charles III coronation in May.

The invite-only exclusive curated experience in mid April 2023 was held at Veeraswamy, the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK in partnership with Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky.

Ms Vishal talked about the significance of Britain's presence in India which had altered tastes, trends and even the idea of Indian food.

“The English presence and European ingredients and influences entwined with the ancient Indian and Mughal cultures of the subcontinent to give us distinctive dishes that we still associated with the Raj, and which are a part of Indian gastronomy even today” said Ms Vishal.

Camellia Panjabi discussed the major changes that have taken place in the cuisine of both countries in the last 75 years after the departure of the British from India.

“Some of the most innovative Indian restaurants are now found besides London in other international cities, like Bangkok,

Singapore, and the United States, as this young talent find quicker acceptance of innovative Indian food outside of India”, said Panjabi.

ABOUT MAHARAJA HIGHBALL AND GLENMORANGIE PUNCH

India has just become the world’s biggest market for whisky but its association with Scotch has been a very long one. The Indian princely states under the Raj in the 19th century became connoisseurs, importing from distilleries, including Glenmorangie’s.

ABOUT VEERASWAMY

Situated in a prime location off London's Regent Street, Veeraswamy has been offering the finest Indian cuisine since 1926. It is the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK, serving classical Indian food attuned to 21st-century tastes.
