Why join ASP - What do our Members value? By Denise McNerney, ASP Board President As worn out as I feel about virtual work-related meetings – I have to say that in the last week, I have participated in two incredibly energetic and engaging meetings with my volunteer job at ASP! Our co-leaders of the Global Membership Committee – “GMC” (formerly Global Marketing Committee) lead both discussions. Anthony Taylor and Caitlin Akers simply started by asking, “Why did we join ASP?”, and I was quite surprised where the discussion took me personally, as well as delighted to see where it took other participants! The core responses may not surprise you – drivers such as knowledge sharing/thought leadership, networking, advancing career, and advancing the mission/vision of ASP and the strategy management profession were what participants shared. What was really great to experience was the energy around the conversation and the stories around their experiences. What struck me personally in-the-moment, was more of a feeling, rather than a thought. A feeling of true camaraderie with professionals – and really great people I might add – that share my passion for strategy management. It brought this true sense of community, that takes a special group of people and/or a special experience to generate. Let’s face it, compared to lawyers, nurses, accountants, engineers, etc. there aren’t that many of us strategy professionals out there. So the chance to have generative conversations with such colleagues, as well as other professionals and leaders who truly understand the value of strategy management, is stimulating and motivating! Believe me, my day job is running a company and delivering consulting services. I work way more than 40-hour weeks – so it’s not like I’m looking for something to “fill my time” – the last time I was “caught up” was September of 1983 (that’s another story…)! However, I am proud and appreciative to be an ASP member and a volunteer for the association. As my three-year-old grandson says – “it fills my bucket”. Surprised as I am at this being true for me because I am not typically a “joiner” of groups… but here I am, waxing poetic about ASP membership experience. So – you ask – “what is she up to?” The GMC will be conducting a survey soon, about ASP membership, and I hope we hear from every one of you! We want to help ensure every ASP member is appreciative of their experience and helps us bring that same kind of experience to others. We have amazing momentum building in this association, with volunteers stepping up to advance initiatives at an astounding rate. They don’t have to do this – they want to do this! Let’s continue to build the value and experience, so that we can have the power to realize our Vision to “Be the global standard bearer for organizational transformation and success through strategy” as well as our Mission to “Lead and support people and organizations through the promotion of a holistic approach to strategy management and by setting standards for strategy through thought leadership, professional development and certification.” I know – it’s long, not quite as tight as Nevin’s article below on the 8-Word Mission – we’ll work on that though – and I’m sure an amazing, engaged group of volunteers will help us!

ANNOUNCEMENTS ASP Government Community of Practice Update On February 11, The Government Community of Practice held a research sharing event hosted by Woody Stanley. In this inaugural Public Sector Research Discussion Group session, Woody presented the paper: Does Strategic Planning Improve Organizational Performance – A Meta-Analysis. The Gov CoP hopes that these kinds of events will help bridge the gap between academic research and strategic planning practices. We intend to host these kinds of sessions quarterly. The emphasis will be on application of strategic management in both the US and International federal, state, county and local government organizations. In our next webinar on Wednesday, March 24, we are excited to host a joint webinar with the National Capital Area Chapter. Denise Sughrue, Dan Fukushima, and Speakers Amanda Ku from the Toffler Associates will present Societal Changes and The Future of Work. The webinar will focus on societal forces of change and how will 2030 be different for the workforce.

STRATEGIC STOCKMAL Threatcasting I had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to listen to Brian David Johnson, the noted futurist, discuss an emerging new methodology to complement other foresight models and scenario planning. This methodology, called “threatcasting”, is an approach focused on modeling possible and potential futures and threats in a complex and uncertain environment and creates a framework for planning, preparation, and decision making. Its aim is to guard against strategic surprises and takes a ten-year outlook. Using a participative design involving up to 70+ subject matter experts through multiple rounds of deliberation, the methodology looks at social science, technological (because future technologies are already here, even if in a lab), cultural, and economic trends – in that order – and then identifies flags to sense for a probable threat event occurring. Mr. Johnson claims that multiple iterations help to see “clusters” and gain clarity of the threats. Then, the participants “backcast” to the present to identify mitigation and recovery steps. CERTIFICATION CORNER

Apply for our SMP and SPP Certifications now! Deadline approaching soon... In this time and place, how can we ever really prepare ourselves for the uncertainty that we face today? Most of us learn on the job. When we learn this way, we grab the pieces of the puzzle that will solve our challenges quickly. But we only grab a piece of the puzzle. How do you learn that the rest of the puzzle may be more relevant that the piece you grabbed just to get you through? Achieving ASP certification is a signal to the world and yourself that you know what you are doing in the field of strategy. Earning the certification of Strategic Planning Professional or Strategic Management Professional after your name symbolizes that you understand the “thousand-piece puzzle” of strategy—not just the 50 piece beginner puzzle. It’s the study process—the preparation—where the intrinsic value is for you. Holding that inner confidence that you know the best practices and methodologies in the field is powerful. Knowing that you can take your company’s strategy planning to the next level creates value. Demonstrating that you meet the required competencies to attain the designation is a personal achievement. Deadline to apply is April 1st, 2021. Start your application now so you don't miss out. Taking the exam this year? We are thrilled to announce that in partnership with LBL Strategies, we can now extend a time limited 10% discount on LBL courses that help prepare you to take the ASP certification exam. ARTICLES FROM MEMBERS Win Hearts with Your Mission Statement By Nevin Kamath

Every tool has its purpose; your organization has one too. Its purpose goes beyond just making money or achieving metrics, of course. You’re changing the lives of your customers, employees, partners and / or volunteers in little and sometimes big ways. The “mission” of your organization is its basic purpose. Sometimes stated in “eight words or less,” your mission gets right to the point of what your organization does. Google’s mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Tesla’s mission is “to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” These missions are short, clear, and exciting. What’s yours? Click here to read more.

Why does Amazon Succeed? They Focus on their Core Competencies! By Randall Rollinson (LBL Strategies) In these most challenging times, organizations are well served when they analyze, embrace and leverage what makes them special in the eyes of those they serve. Such an analysis is often referred to as a core competency analysis. Such an analysis defines the bundle of skills and technologies that enable a company (or organization) to provide a particular value to a customer. Amazon: An Example of Leveraging Core Competency A perfect example is Amazon. We know Amazon is striving to be, in their words, “earth’s most customer-centric company.” In this example, we see that Amazon’s core competencies are centered on providing a premier customer experience via fast delivery, superior customer service and access to a wide range of products at a lower cost. These capabilities provide access to a wide range of markets, are difficult for competitors to imitate and make a significant contribution to the perceived customer benefit. Amazon’s ability to build, leverage, and reconfigure its core competencies into sustainable competitive advantages exemplifies why they are supremely well-positioned to expand their offerings and succeed in a rapidly changing external environment.
