ASP Updates – and Modeling the Practices We Espouse As the association for strategy management professionals – we must role model the practices we espouse. I am happy to report that we have a healthy and robust ongoing process for strategic plan execution progress assessment and reporting. As part of that process, the ASP Board of Directors just completed a review of our Oct-Dec 2020 scorecard during our January meeting. I have some exciting updates and accomplishments to share about the association and the value we are bringing to our members and the field, but first, I want to emphasize our own plan oversight practices. I shared with you last year the revised policy and practice the Board put into place around the strategic plan progress review. As part of this process, Pillar Leads and their core team members meet quarterly to review progress to date and determine next steps for execution. This is also a critical point in the strategy management process where we have built in agility and are able to identify potential changes that might be warranted to the plan, and make those adjustments, so we can quickly adapt to changing conditions. The teams find these discussions very helpful and motivating to keep the implementation process and momentum rolling. As a leader, I greatly appreciate the level of accountability this process also lends to overall highperformance! I am happy to report we now have the full strategic plan available to members. Start here for the high-level plan view. On this page you will also find links to the detailed plan as well as the Governance and Management Scorecards. We firmly believe in the value of a robust plan oversight process, as well as the importance of integrity and transparency in our governance. Making this information available to our members is a critical component to living those values. Now – some quick comments on what we accomplished during the last quarter of 2020, in spite of the challenges brought by the pandemic and its ripple effect, and with great thanks to our incredibly engaged volunteers and staff who have made amazing things happen during this time! The structure and outline for our Body of Knowledge (“BoK”) Version 3.0 was completed and positioned for the Beta and writing in first quarter 2021. The ASP BoK is a huge element of our value to members, leading thought leadership in the strategy management arena. I am proud to see the extraordinary effort that has gone into this work effort, bringing our BoK content up to date to include both foundational components as well as recent trends in strategy management. Certification – not only are we developing the next version of the Body of Knowledge, we have also developed the next version of our Strategic Planning Credentialling application process and certification exams. ASP is the only global strategy association with a certification program. The purpose of our program is to establish a high-level of quality and consistency within the fields of strategic planning and management so that strategic planners and those responsible for developing and deploying strategy can assist organizations in meeting and exceeding the challenges of the 21st century. Our new exams reflect that relevance for the 21st century. Additionally, a great effort for promoting the credentials came to fruition with our best attended webinar to date occurring in December showcasing the new exam and process. ASP Global Strategy Management Conference 2021 – launched with announcements and selection of content from renowned presenters from across the globe. Keep your eye out for more information on registering for this great event with easy access to a robust agenda of leading trends and practices in the industry. Our geographic Chapters and virtual Communities of Practice continue to advance and bring great content that is free to members, as well as offer a community and network of professionals to connect with, learn from and advance career goals. Global Marketing Committee – it is the board’s objective to continue to tell our story to members and potential members about the value ASP can bring to their careers and professional practice. The board is extremely grateful to our volunteer leaders who have stepped up their efforts in this past quarter, engaging other volunteers across the association to join in this effort. These are just a few of the highlights from the amazing efforts going on at ASP. We invite any members interested in becoming further engaged in our communities/committees to contact: Karishma Lobo

ASP Women in Strategy Community of Practice Update Strategic planning can be vital – life-giving to organizations and life-changing for participants. On Wednesday, March 17, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM (ET), Dr. Carol Poore, ASP member, and author, will share highlights from her new book, Strategic Impact: A Leader’s Framework for the Customized Vital Strategic Plan, endorsed by the Association for Strategic Planning. Dr. Poore modernizes strategic planning and offers a dynamic, comprehensive approach focused on a life-changing workshop, written plan, and tracked, communicated, and celebrated goals. During this session, Dr. Poore will present a trailblazing, three-step framework, allowing participants to declutter the typically complicated strategic planning process and deliver a destiny-shaping program in an efficient, budget-conscious way. ASP Nonprofit Center for Excellence CoP Update Leaders agree that goal-setting is a powerful tool for any organization. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) comprise a goalsetting framework popularized by venture capitalist John Doerr and technology firm Google. OKRs are spreading outside of the technology and startup world into traditional corporations, government entities, and nonprofits. For your nonprofit, they may be a valuable tool to replace your goal-setting process. Webinar Wednesday presents on Setting Goals with OKRs, on February 17, 2021 by ASP’s Nonprofit Center for Excellence. It will feature Ben Lamorte, President at OKRs.com, a firm that trains and coaches managers to make measurable progress at work using Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). Ben is the author of “Objectives and Key Results: Driving Focus, Alignment, and Engagement with OKRs” published by Wiley. He has helped over a thousand managers across dozens of organizations implement OKRs effectively, has a graduate degree in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, and works with teams across the globe on effectively integrating the OKRs cycle into daily work to deliver outcomes, not just to-do lists. Webinar Learning Objectives: Obtain a basic understanding of the OKRs framework Draft an OKR for your organization Assess how and if OKRs can add value at your organization Registration is free for all. ASP Government CoP Update The Government Community of Practice (CoP) once again is exploring different ways to bring knowledge sharing, learning, and networking to the government strategic planning community. In January, we held our quarterly Webinar, “Extending Enterprise Strategy Through Public-Private Partnerships,” presented by Ted Sienknecht and Andy Dziewulski. A recording will be available soon. https://www.strategyassociation.org/admin/email/view.aspx?jobId=4387636

As we had mentioned in the December Strategic Edge, Woody Stanley will be launching the Government CoP’s inaugural Public Sector Research Discussion Group. The ASP Government CoP is initiating this effort to help bridge the gap between academic research and strategic planning practices. We will meet on a quarterly basis to review recently published academic papers and discuss their relevance to the real-world practice within a public sector context. The emphasis will be on application of strategic management in both the US and International federal, state, county and local government organizations. The discussion will be facilitated by Woody Stanley with assistance from members of the core ASP Government CoP team. All ASP members are invited to attend. The first discussion group will be on February 11 from 121pm (ET) to discuss the paper titled Does Strategic Planning Improve Organizational Performance – A Meta-Analysis. Fill in our survey to receive the web link in advance. We look forward to seeing you at the first meeting. In March, we are also excited to announce a joint Webinar with the National Capital Area Chapter featuring the Toffler Associates research on trends within the Public Sector. Stay tuned for more information. If you would like to join or become more involved with the Gov CoP, please contact Karishma Lobo. We are interested in your ideas.

ARTICLES FROM MEMBERS Embrace Uncertainty, Build Foresight! by Robin Champ Senior Trainer – LBL Strategies Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We can apply the same adage to strategy. If we always use the same input and thought process when developing strategy, will we really get a different result? How do we prepare ourselves for an uncertain future, when we are often unaware that we are chained to our usual thought processes?

A solution widely used by organizations such as Shell Oil Company, and the United States Coast Guard, is scenario-based https://www.strategyassociation.org/admin/email/view.aspx?jobId=4387636

planning. This is a tool to exercise strategic foresight, but it is not the same as forecasting. And the difference is an important one. Forecasting is predicting. This is often the track we find ourselves in as organizations. We often pick the most anticipated future, predict what might happen, and plan only around that one event. We tend to use the same subject matter experts, the same background, and the same tools. Contrarily, scenario-based planning as a foresight tool is intended to cast a wide net to the unknown future. It helps us break outside of our conventional thinking, pushing the boundaries of our thought to examine the possible, but not necessarily popular ways the future could unfold. By doing so we accept that the future is inherently uncertain and prepare accordingly. We are not trying to develop one particular future, but rather explore many possible futures so that we are prepared for, as opposed to predicting, what we will need to stay relevant in the years ahead. STRATEGIC STOCKMAL The New Map: Challenges Facing Companies, Communities and Nations In his latest book, “The New Map: Energy, Climate, and the Clash of Nations,” Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Daniel Yergin makes an elegant argument for the current and future “energy transition” from fossil fuels to renewables. Nations, cities, companies, and even universities are being disruptive and some may not be able to make the transition. As he points out, investment managers are looking even more closely at companies that are investing in sustainability and the incorporation of new “green” technologies. Endowment managers are coming under pressure to divest of companies in their holdings that are part of the fossil fuel era of energy. As he points out, Larry Fink, head of BlackRock said, “Climate change has become the defining factor in companies’ long-term prospects” and BlackRock will “place sustainability at the center of our investment approach.” Strategists should take heed and help to inform executive leaders of the importance of looking at sustainability, climate change, and reducing ones’ carbon footprint. Yergin’s book should be on everyone’s bookshelf (perhaps along with his other energy-focused works). Click here to read more.
