Keeping our Members, Professional Development and Strategy Thought Leadership at the Forefront: ASP Certification Initiative Introduction by Denise McNerney, ASP Board President As a member-based organization, ASP continues to keep our members’ needs and desires at the forefront of our priorities. We know how important professional development is to you, as well as connection to advanced thought leadership in the field of strategy is key to all of you. And even throughout the enormous disruption of the pandemic, we did not lose focus on these priorities, even while ensuring ASP’s ongoing sustainability. Sue Radwan’s article below brilliantly illustrates that focus on prioritized efforts. ASP Board members are all strategy leaders, and have made Certification a key ASP initiative, recognizing the incredible value this brings to individual strategists, as well as the field of strategy. Setting the standard for the competencies needed to lead and manage strategy is foundational to our mission and the certification initiative. In her article, Sue describes the incredible evolution of this initiative, which is now essentially on the fast-track to international accreditation. Now that is truly setting the standard! ASP Certification will continue to grow as the goldstandard demonstration of that expertise. Now is a great time to head down that path. Come join me!

A Case Study in Strategy Transformation By Sue Radwan, SMP, Chair of the ASP Certification Commission and ASP President-Elect Substantive change takes time. And that is the case with ASP Certification 2.0. You may have read about the release of the new content outlines based on job analysis research sponsored by ASP’s Certification Commission. The new BoK is now in progress, thank you to everyone that contributed. Additionally, you may have heard that we partnered with a new vendor to more effectively deliver our certification exams. So here is the rest of the story. ASP is about to launch into the final phase of Certification 2.0. We are now pulling all the elements together so that we have a user-friendly, timely and consistent application process and eligibility determination, a legally defensible and reliable exam, and availability of the exam world-wide through remote live proctoring. Getting to the point of launch has been a major investment for ASP. The certification initiative we are about to launch is the first step in fulfilling a dream for ASP’s reach. Those involved see that certification is key to ASP’s worldwide presence and overall impact. In order to achieve that status, we have to make certain that the entire process-- from application, study, examination and results notification-- is world-class. In 2021, exams will be available in May, September and November. The addition of the September test cycle is offered for those who have a bit more time in the summer months to prepare for the exam. Beginning in 2022, exams will be offered whenever you are ready. Application to sit for an exam requires about 60 days in advance of your desired exam date. Candidates should begin their intensive study at the point of application if not before.
ASP Member Volunteers Interested in Setting Policy Around Social Justice ASP Board of Directors is commissioning a task force to draft recommendations to the board on a policy and procedure and position statement on Social Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for our global membership association. ASP Government Community of Practice Update On April 21, the Government CoP hosted a webinar titled: “Developing our Cognitive Operating System in National Security.” In his talk, Jake Sotiriadis, PhD, Chief of Strategic Foresight and Futures for the United States Air Force, discussed the importance of strategic foresight as a key input to strategy development. There are no Gov CoP events scheduled for May as we all turn our attention to the conference. In June, Woody Stanley will lead our next Public Sector Forum Discussion. The topic is forthcoming – look for an announcement in May. If you would like to join or become more involved with the Government CoP, please contact Karishma Lobo. We are interested in your ideas.

STRATEGIC STOCKMAL Convergence, Divergence, and Reemergence
Earlier last month I had the opportunity to listen in on the Federal Foresight Community of Interest webinar featuring the US Army’s “Mad Scientist Laboratory.” Who knew that this existed? Their role is to disrupt conventional thinking through storytelling, foresight, and the exploration of what they refer to as “edge cases” meaning new and emerging technology that will likely impact the operating environment. They believe that key topics for them, and others in their ecosystem, need to pay attention to include: Convergence – that is the coming together of different technologies Speed of change Democratization of technology The weaponization of information – and first-mover advantage The dichotomy of everything observable and trying to make sense of it. To them, with the internet of things (IoT), there is nowhere to hide. Competition and conflict are blurring because of this. More information campaigns, more use of cyber and less large-scale systems and greater use of unmanned systems which are cheaper, scalable, and disposable. They also recognize that policy changes are slow to make to deal with these disruptions in the operational environment. Click here to read more.
