L’ AÉROPORT GOLFE DE ST-TROPEZ

De Aéroport Golfe de Saint-Tropez, gelegen op 15 kilometer van Saint-Tropez, is de ideale luchthaven voor zakenreizen. “Onze klanten bestaan voor 85% uit zakenmensen. In 2018 landden hier 9282 toestellen, waarvan een 3000tal helikopters. We hebben niet de faciliteiten, noch de ambitie om groter te worden. Wij kunnen aan mensen die regelmatig vliegen een uitmuntende en gepersonaliseerde service bieden, die ze in grotere luchthavens niet aantreffen,” vertelt Audrey Seybald. Zij is commercieel en logistiek manager van La Mole, zoals de luchthaven vaak genoemd wordt.

The Aéroport Golfe de Saint-Tropez, located 15 kilometres from Saint-Tropez, is the ideal airport for business trips.

“Business people account for 85% of our customers. 9,282 movements here in 2018, including around 3,000 helicopters. We have neither the facilities nor the ambition to become bigger. We can offer people who fly regularly an excellent and personalized service that they won’t find in larger airports”, says Audrey Seybald. She is the commercial and logistics manager of La Mole, as the airport is often called.

Het minste wat je van deze luchthaven kan zeggen, is dat ze op veel vlakken zeer bijzonder is.

“Zeker en vast. Het is de enige ‘kleine’ luchthaven in Frankrijk die officieel erkend is als ‘internationaal’. We hebben een zeer korte landingsbaan van amper 1200 meter, wat maakt dat piloten een officiële kwalificatie nodig hebben om hier te mogen landen. Met uitzondering van twee dagelijkse vluchten van en naar Genève van de Zwitserse maatschappij Air Glaciers (van Pasen tot de zeilregatta ‘Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez’ eind september, nvdr), vliegen er geen lijnvluchten op onze luchthaven. Onze klanten zijn grotendeels zakenmensen afkomstig uit Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Duitsland, Italië en België. In veel gevallen zijn zij de enige passagier in het vliegtuig, sommigen zijn zelf ook piloot. De andere 15% komen op vakantie, vaak naar hun eigen buitenverblijf in de Var. Dit is een prachtige en gevarieerde regio, het is veel meer dan enkel SaintTropez. Elke passagier besteedt gemiddeld 1.720 euro per dag. Onze luchthaven speelt dus een zeer belangrijke rol in de economische ontwikkeling van de Golf van Saint-Tropez.”

The least you can say about this airport is that it is very special in many ways.

“Definitely. It is the only ‘small’ airport in France that is officially recognized as international. We have a very short runway of barely 1200 meters, which means that pilots need an official qualification to land here. With the exception of two daily flights to and from Geneva by the Swiss airline Air Glaciers (from Easter to the sailing regatta ‘Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez’ at the end of September, ed.), there are no scheduled flights at our airport. Our customers are mainly business people from France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Belgium. In many cases they are the only passengers on the plane, some of them are pilots themselves. The other 15% go on vacation, often to their own country home in the Var. This is a beautiful and varied region, it is much more than just Saint-Tropez. Each passenger spends an average of 1720 euros per day. Our airport therefore plays a very important role in the economic development of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.”

Ook de stijl van de luchthaven is totaal anders dan wat we gewend zijn op andere plaatsen…

“De luchthaven is gebouwd in neo-Provençaalse stijl, met veel traditionele elementen. Een bewuste keuze! Dit valt inderdaad niet te vergelijken met de vele koele, haast ‘steriele’ luchthavens zoals de meesten gewend zijn. Onze klanten, waaronder veel zakenmensen en bedrijfsleiders, houden van de manier waarop moderne technologie hier samengaat met de traditionele Var-sfeer. De omgeving is rustig en groen, en dat wordt ook enorm geapprecieerd. In tegenstelling tot wat sommige mensen denken, verwelkomen wij hier niet de typische ‘jetset’. Die vliegen doorgaans op de luchthaven van Cannes, onze ‘grote zus’ (die tot dezelfde groep behoort, nvdr).”

Denken jullie soms aan uitbreiding van de luchthaven?

“Neen, dat is niet ons doel. Ten eerste hebben we gewoon de ruimte niet. Onze luchthaven is omringd door bergen en gelegen naast een rivier en een drukke autoweg. Hierdoor is het onmogelijk om de landingsbaan groter te maken. Daarnaast is er ook overeengekomen met de omwonenden dat er maximaal 10000 landingen mogen zijn per jaar. Dat cijfer hebben we bijna bereikt. Los daarvan hebben we ook niet de ambitie om groter te worden. Het is prima zoals het nu is. Doordat we zo klein zijn, kennen we de meeste klanten heel goed. Ze weten dat ze bij ons terecht kunnen voor efficiënte service, kwaliteit en discretie. We hebben een klein team van 19 medewerkers (25 in het hoogseizoen) die zich met hart en ziel inzetten om elke passagier een warm welkom te heten in de Golf van Saint-Tropez.”

“The airport is built in neo-Provencal style, with many traditional elements. A conscious choice! Indeed, this cannot be compared to the many cool, almost ‘sterile’ airports as most are used to. Our customers, many of whom are business people and managers, love the way in which modern technology is combined with the traditional Var atmosphere. The area is quiet and green, and that is also greatly appreciated. Contrary to what some people think, we do not welcome the typical ‘jet set’ here. They usually fly to the airport of Cannes, our ‘big sister’ (who belongs to the same group, ed.).”

Do you sometimes think of expanding the airport?

“No, that’s not our goal. First of all, we just don’t have the space. Our airport is surrounded by mountains and located next to a river and a busy motorway. This makes it impossible to enlarge the runway. In addition, it has also been agreed with local residents that there may be a maximum of 10,000 movements per year. We’re about to reach that number. Apart from that, we also do not have the ambition to become bigger. It is fine the way it is now. Because we are so small, we know most customers very well. They know they can come to us for efficient service, quality and discretion. We have a small team of 19 employees (25 in the high season) who put their heart and soul into giving every passenger a warm welcome to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.”
