The idea sprang up over three years ago in the mind of Charlotte’s dynamic personality, Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun. Long, an advocate and Board Member of Opera Carolina, Chun approached Maestro James Meena about bringing together multiple Asian talents to create a type of concert that would be “new” to Charlotte! For the last two and half years James Meena, Opera Carolina’s General Director and Principal Conductor, gave a great deal of thought to expanding the company's outreach, specifically into Charlotte's growing Asian community. His vision has a global impact, depicted in the grand performance of "Art to Poetry to Music." He worked really hard to put the whole program together, arranging for nine world famous opera singers to perform under one roof. He composed songs, and with great passion and enthusiastic attitude he made this happen. The program is an eclectic grouping of grand opera selections, traditional Korean and Chinese songs and live-feed projected interpretive calligraphy by Chinese master calligrapher, Dr. Hong Zhao. Meena said much of the program will feature familiar arias from such notable operas such as "Aida," "Turandot," "Das Rheingold." "We'll have some surprises too," he said. Meena noted that the program is a celebration of the theme for Opera Carolina's 2013-14 season: "The Architects of Love." On the evening of September 12, 2013, that idea became a reality that was co-engineered by Dr. Chun, James Meena , and Weihong Yan, Director of Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer

University at Charlotte. The collaboration resulted in a spectacular performance that married art, poetry, and music. To mark this auspicious event, Dr.Chun, Publisher of the Asian Herald newspaper, along with his talented wife, Sun-Shin (Sunny) Chun, celebrated 20 years of continuous publication by recognizing those people within the Asian Community who through years of service and servitude, had contributed immeasurably to the ascent of Asians in Charlotte. The awardees were: James Meena – Dr. Jian Dong Award; Dr. Nini Bautista – Asian Society Cultural Advocate; Nimish Bhatt – Asian Humanities; Dr. John Chen – CAACC Service; Dr. Ankang Dong – Asian Community Service; Andrea Lee – Asian Society Service; Jimmy Lee – Asian Entrepreneur; Benjamin Li, Esq – Asian Society Legal Service; Philip Maung – Asian Entrepreneur; David Pak – Community Service; Richard Yang – Asian Community Education Service; and Dr. Jian Zhang – CAACC Service. Touted as a “Benefit Concert Celebrating Opera in Our Community, Knight Theater was magically transformed in an inspiring manner as the “Chinese National Treasure” personality of Dr. Hong Zhao, Master Calligrapher, plied his art on huge sheets of scrolled paper with ancient symbols of Chinese characters that choreographed the syncopation of the music and voices, which visibly unfolded on a huge screen over the orchestra. The rhythm and timing were impeccable as even the crescendos emboldened the brush strokes; and as the operas ended, so did the slow-motioned last sweep of the brush as

it gently laid down the disappearing ink, fading into silence. The opera personalities hailed from America, China, and Korea as the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, brilliantly conducted by Maestro Meena, entranced the concert-goers with selections from Wagner, Verdi, and Puccini, along with traditional Korean, Chinese, and Mongolian songs performed by sopranos Othalie Graham, Jill Gardner, and Sharon Neff; mezzo soprano Victoria Livengood; tenors Justin Lavender and Victor Ryan Robertson; baritone Hyung Yun; bass Sun Yu and Andrew Gangestad; with Emily Jarrell Urbanek on piano. Narrated by Kim Watson Brooks, the evening unfolded like a fairy tale being read that had come to life. The dream of Chun, along with the articulate planning of Meena and Yan finally happened! For a program that had never before been realized, the event was hailed as an immediate success and promises “repeats.” The next “Art to Poetry to Music” is already scheduled for September 13, 2014. But for now, there is still time to purchase tickets to see the Opera Carolina production of Verdi’s “Aida” which will have performances over two weekends: Oct 19, 24, and 27 at Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. call 704-372-1000 or visit www.operacarolina. org for ticket information. You will get to see Othalie Graham from L’Opera de Montreal, and Sun Yu, Beijing Opera; two of the magnificent performers who were part of the “Art to Poetry By Andrea Lee. to Music.” ■

TMahatma Gandhi’s Birthday Celebration Message from Nimish Bhatt Board of Director CAACC Founder UVCEF/CIS/UISA Please mark your calendar for Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday Celebration, Unity in Diversity, an come at the Old Court House on Oct 5th, 2013 at 6:30 pm . Join to celebrate, respect and support all Human Rights on Earth. We know you will love to be part of it! Please invite friends and family members; it is only because of Citizens like you, and members from Asian organizations that today we have a cozy park and a beautiful statue to adorn it. Charlotte is proudly paying its homage, and so can you… Thank you for your support! On October 2nd each year the nation pays homage to "Bapu" otherwise also known as the "Father of the Nation" who played a significant role in Indian Independence. Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi also referred as 'Gandhiji' was an iconic figure in India and around the globe for his unique practices of non-violence or ahimsa. He believed in the power of non-violence and in the philosophy of truth known as "Satyagraha" and adopted these beliefs in his leadership that helped in achieving

India's Independence. With his strong philosophy on non-violence and truth he proved the world that the path ahead may not be the easy, but it is certainly the most effective methods of achieving the goals. It was this belief that got him noticed and appreciated by historians as one of the greatest freedom fighters that the world had ever seen. As such, India observes a national holiday on this day to pay reverence to this great soul. Besides his contribution towards the country's freedom struggle, Gandhi will always be remembered around the globe for his distinctive ideologies that inspired many great leaders, such as Martin Luther King, James Lawson, Nelson Mandela, all of whom drew inspiration from Gandhi's nonviolence theory. Celebrations and Rituals On this day, people in the country hold several prayer services and community functions to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation. Art lover hold exhibition that reflect the Gandhian principles of life and freedom, an interpretation of Gandhi's ideologies on canvas. This way, they honor his contribution towards India's freedom struggle in an aesthetic manner. In some places awards are given away to nonviolence projects or acts in honor of him. Special speeches are given addressing his life and work of Gandhi with the view to educate young minds on his ideas and beliefs. Feel free to join the Indian Community and Hindu Center in Charlotte■

Fundraising Dinner for Patrick Cannon

“Are there any questions?” I asked a seated crowd of about 100 Charlotteans, representing various groups from Asian American community groups to the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg and the Charlotte Chess Club. After a minute or so of silence and scanning around the room, a hand shot up. Ms. Adelia Fallar, a retired teacher from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and a former president of the Filipino American Community of the Carolinas stood from her seat. “I live on the east side of Charlotte. I have lived there for 35 years, and I have seen parts of it go up, and parts of it just fall apart. If you are elected, what are you going to do about it, … Mr. Mayor?” The event, a fundraising dinner for Patrick Cannon, the Democratic candidate for Mayor of Charlotte, held at the Asian Herald Library on October 1 and hosted by Drs Ki-Hyun and Sunshin Chun, brought Asian Americans and other minority community members and leaders together to get to know the candidate. Mr. Cannon responded to the question with his plan to revitalize areas of Charlotte such as East Charlotte where Ms Fallar lives, and highlighted the “Westside Strategy Plan” that he led to revitalize the corridor from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to downtown. He also responded to questions from the audience to increase blue-collar job opportunities to bring balance and diversity to Charlotte’s economy in ways that would directly impact the Asian American community and Charlotte at large. The evening progressed this way, with questions from the audience being answered and productive dialogue between a community and a prospective elected official. Never before has there been a better time for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) to be heard in

North Carolina’s history. AAPIs are the fastest growing racial group in the US according to a report by the US Census Bureau, with North Carolina’s population representing one of the fastest growing populations in the nation. These populations are most concentrated in metropolitan areas like Charlotte and Raleigh where the percentages reach as high as 5%. Most importantly, the AAPI population represents an increasingly important factor in political elections around the country and especially in swing states like North Carolina. AAPIs are organizing around the state and showing their influence, but have not yet completely earned a place at the table. The fundraiser for Patrick Cannon exceeded the fundraising goal of $10,000 by raising $10,930 for the campaign, showing how strong the community can be when it joins together for a common cause. It used to be easy to forget that the government affects everyone, but one need only look at the shut down of the federal government, the millions of Americans still out of work, and the harsh voter restriction laws that will affect every North Carolinian to see that government is everywhere. It is in the taxes we pay each time we purchase clothes, the gas we put in our cars, the schools we send our children to, and the job we wake up to everyday. Today the government is more partisan than ever, and voices, some only representing a small percentage of voters, affecting policies are becoming louder and louder. It is more important than ever that AAPIs step up and represent themselves and their concerns. Whether those concerns are for civil rights or to advocate business relationships, everyone has a right to be heard. Leadership from the Korean American Association, the Carolina’s Chinese

Chamber of Commerce, the Carolina’s Asian American Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese American Association, and the Filipino American Community of the Carolinas showed their support for a candidate and a party that supports their interests. Business owners like

restaurateur Andy Chen of Room 112, who catered the event with a lavish spread, also contributed. Patrick Cannon supports economic development, neighborhood improvement, and fiscal prudence for areas where many AAPIs live and work. The Democratic Party supports reasonable immigration reform, education, and political access, issues that especially impact AAPIs. As Patrick Cannon gave his closing remarks with his wife, Trenna, Dr. Chun brought the message home to the audience. “Thank you for contributing your time and money tonight, but I have to tell you. It doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win. So please, find 10 friends, and tell them that they have to vote.” While AAPIs are increasing in number and importance, it not mean nearly as much if the community does not do something with that growth. In a time when it seems like the government is not doing the things we want it to or representing our points of view, I can only raise my hand, stand up, and ask you… “What are you going to do about it?”■ by Daniel Chun, CPA.Esq.

graduate to find job placement. 2. Colleges will team up with industries and offer meaningful courses and counseling to students and parents. 3. The number of students dropping out of college (for fear of student loan debt) will reduce and more students will dare themselves to the finish line, knowing that their chance of finding employment is greater. 4.Minorities will no longer be marginalized but get help needed to succeed in school. Remember that no matter how good President Obama’s proposal sounds it is not the law. The plan is only a wish without the approval of Congress. It is therefore our responsibility to put our weight behind President Obama to make sure Congress pass a bill to implement some meaningful changes to address the rising educational cost. Let your congressman or congresswoman know you support President Obama’s initiative. Again, let us hold the President responsible to complete what he has started. He should not rest until he leaves the youth some legacy, notably- AFFORDABLE COLLEGE EDUCATION TO ALL AMERICANS. Bonna is the author of Who is Barack Obama [Available in 13 major languages)and Barack Obama: the Road to the White House, now available in your local bookstores. Find more of his other books on Amazon.■

MAKING COLLEGE EDUCATION AFFORDABLE Although it is acknowledged that education would bridge the gap and level the plane for low-income students/ families,

the reality is gradually becoming an illusion. Unless one is privileged to get into an ivy-league college the opportunity for upward mobility is challenging. Many end up graduating from colleges that did not prepare them adequately to compete. Meanwhile these students pay a lot of money for the education they signed up for. Since students take federal loans with interests, inability to find jobs after graduation even puts them at a more disadvantage to succeed as they would end up with a growing debt they cannot pay soon. Making higher education accessible to all Americans is not a privilege but a right. Although the FAFSA money is distributed to all colleges, not all colleges are stepping up to justify the funds they receive from the government. If the US government under FAFSA spends $150 billion in federal assistance to students annually, mostly in loans there is no justification to produce graduates who cannot find a job placement. President Obama is proposing that colleges that fail to hold down cost should not be funded with government money while colleges that hold down cost get more federal money. According to data compiled by the Higher Education Policy Institute, between 1982 and 2012, college tuition and fees have risen, on average, by 603 percent. It is obvious that colleges have inflated the prices of college tuition. This is ridiculous, and it is about time someone in authority spoke for the lower income families that are being hit the hardest. Over that same period, between 1982 and 2012, the Consumer

Price Index has risen 130 percent, and median family income only148 percent. “Higher education is not a luxury but an economic imperative,” argues President Obama. Speaking at the University of Buffalo on Thursday August 24, 2013, President Obama acknowledged that the middle class struggles to meet the persistent soaring financial burden on college education; and this must be the concern of government. Higher cost of getting a meaningful education is widening the gap between the rich and poor as lack of affordability creates a barrier and a burden to the low income family in America. It used to be that once you study hard and maintain good grades one could easily move up the social ladder --from poverty to middle class and possibly, the upper class (with a very good and affordable education). On his bus tour, President Obama admitted that college fees are unfairly priced. Based on the outcome of many colleges, I agree with the President. Indeed, some are graduating with degrees that cannot find them jobs. It was only proper and presidential that Obama would step in at this time. He is proposing that colleges that produce un-employable graduates should not be funded with federal funds. They should be penalized with less federal aid instead. Education must be a tool for upward mobility not keeping the status quo. President Obama has laid out three key steps that need to be taken to ensure that college remains not only affordable but as a viable ladder of economic opportunity for the lower class to the middle class. 1. First, connect financial aid to school performance, 2. Second support academic innovation and finally, 3. keep the cost of higher education within the reach of all young Americans It is good news that President Obama has now begun to put into action the promise he made to students and the

youth during his 2008 presidential campaign to make college education affordable. President Obama could be the first American president ever to go on a tour (in a non-election time) only to campaign for students’ interest. The Obama’s plan presupposes a Federal Rating System that will allow parents and students to compare colleges for their money worth. Colleges would now be rated on cost (i.e., input versus output). The Obama plan seeks to address the rising college tuition cost, which has increased over 250 percent in the past three decades. Under his proposal, borrowers would be allowed to cap their student loan payments at 10 percent of their monthly income. The college rating system would tie aid to the college’s affordability, the number of students on Pell grants, and the college’s ability to produce outcomes, such as graduates with degrees, earnings of graduates, and other factors Implications on Middle Class are worth discussing: 1. Colleges will now be responsible and proactive in finding recruitment opportunities for their students. The onus will no longer solely rest on the

Health Insurance Marketplace

The Marketplace is a new way to find health coverage that fits your budget and meets your needs. With one application, you can see all your options and enroll. You can apply for Marketplace coverage three ways: online, by mail, or in –person with the help of a Navigator or other qualified helper. Telephone help and online chat are available 24/7 to help you complete your application. Downloadable and paper application will be available October 1. Open enrollments start October 1, 2013. Coverage starts as soon as January 1, 2014. Open enrollment ends March 31, 2014. Insurance plans in the Marketplace are offered by private companies. They cover the same core set of benefits called essential health benefits. No plan can turn you away or charges you more because you have an illness or medical condition. They must cover treatments for these conditions. Plans can’t charge women more than men for the same plan. Many preventive services are covered at no cost to you. Essential health benefits include at least the following items and services: • Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care you get without being admitted to a hospital) • Emergency services • Hospitalization (such as surgery) • Maternity and newborn care (care before and after your baby is born) • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (this includes counseling and psychotherapy)

• Prescription drugs • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices (services and devices to help people with injuries, disabilities, or chronic conditions gain or recover mental and physical skills) • Laboratory services • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management • Pediatric services Essential health benefits are minimum requirements for all plans in the Marketplace. Plans may offer additional coverage. You will see exactly what each plan offers when you compare them sideby-side in the Marketplace. Medicaid basics. Medicaid provides health coverage for some low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Medicaid programs must follow federal guidelines, but they vary somewhat from state to state. You may qualify for Medicaid - now or in 2014. Most states offer coverage for adults with children below a certain income level, as well as pregnant women, some seniors, and people with disabilities. Under the NEW health care law, Medicaid eligibility is expanding in many states. Even if you were told you didn't qualify for Medicaid in the past, you may qualify under the new rules. To see if you qualify for Medicaid, do one of these: • Visit your state's Medicaid website. Use the menu at the bottom of this page to select your state and you'll be sent to the right page. You can apply right now and find out if you qualify. But if you're not eligible now, you may qualify in 2014, when new rules take effect in many states. If you submit an application in October 2013 or later, the state will check the new rules when you apply. • Starting October 1, 2013, fill out an application for the Health Insurance Marketplace. When you finish this application, we'll tell you which programs you and your family qualify for. If it looks like anyone is eligible for Medicaid, we'll

A C.E.O. on… SNAP!

By Ron Shaich Founder, chairman, & CEO at Panera Bread

Day #7: Reflections as my SNAP Challenge Concludes Now that the end of my SNAP Challenge is in sight, I have begun to contemplate what I will take away from the experience. Eating on $4.50 per day not only helped me to appreciate the constant struggle of those facing food insecurity, but also served as a stark reminder that, while I can go back to a “normal” diet, so many other people – millions – simply do not have that option. As I reflect on the week, I have come to realize that what the SNAP Challenge meant to me evolved with each passing day. I originally assumed that I would be blogging about how horrible I felt and how hungry I was each morning and night. The truth is that one week isn’t nearly sufficient to truly feel the pain of hunger. It has worn me down and, yes, I’m beyond bored with lentil soup and my Cheerios knockoff. But really, it’s not the fleeting sense of hunger that I’ll take away from the SNAP Challenge; rather, it is the understanding of just how much food dominates your life when it’s not readily available. Indeed, for those facing food insecurity, food quickly becomes a constant source of worry – and even a source of shame – when its availability is in question. As the week evolved, I came to realize that one of the greatest benefits of the challenge was the increased empathy I now feel for those living day-to-day with food insecurity. And it makes sense. Indeed, it’s how we operate our business. When an individual joins Panera, we ask them to walk in the shoes of our cafe associates and our customers. Those who are hired in the corporate offices are expected to put in hours in the bakery cafe and at our other manufacturing facilities. They’re expected to regularly visit our locations as guests.

We do this so that all of our associates truly understand the customer experience. My participation in the SNAP Challenge was no different. It gave me a small taste of what those confronted by food insecurity (for months, if not years, on end) experience. The SNAP Challenge also provided me with the opportunity to learn and share the life stories of so many people fighting food insecurity. These personal stories, which have touched my heart, provide a real-world voice to the stark reality of food insecurity and serve to give hunger a face. The hundreds of notes and emails I received have come from real people, most of whom have worked hard all of their lives, yet currently find themselves in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. A woman wrote me yesterday describing how she and her husband, who don’t receive any assistance, eat with a daily budget under the $4.50 allotted in the SNAP Challenge. They both worked their entire lives and now rely largely on senior discounts to eat. Another gentleman wrote me to tell me that he had served as a CEO before a tragic accident that left him disabled. He has since lost his job and has had to count on disability and the SNAP safety net to survive. I recall the couple who worked at HP for many years, but were ultimately laid off and unable to find new jobs. They shared with me their strategies to enjoy nutritional food while getting by on just a few bucks. One woman, who volunteers at a local food pantry, told me in an email that she encounters many people who can’t work because they’re “too old, too young, too sick and too disabled.” She sees other families in which two parents may hold as many as four jobs. Finally, I recall the note from the woman who asked me to think about what it must feel like when her children come home from school in the afternoon and there is no food in the cabinets or refrigerator for a snack or even dinner. These aren’t just outliers, either. If you look at the statistics, you begin to realize that hunger isn’t a “far away” problem that resides in the shadows outside of our own communities. This week, the Census Bureau reported that 45 million Americans

are living below the poverty line. USDA data indicates that food insecurity impacts one in six Americans and, of those, roughly a quarter went to college and greater than a third live in a household with one or more employed adults. Only 10% are homeless. No matter how you cut the numbers around hunger, it paints a grim picture…and it only seems to get worse. According to the Census Bureau’s data, 13.6% of US households received SNAP benefits in 2012. That’s up slightly from 2011, but significantly higher than the 8.6% who received benefits in 2008. Over half the recipients of SNAP benefits are families with children or senior citizens. Folks, these are our neighbors, our friends, our family members. We are them and they are us. All week I have heard people rationalize their opposition to programs that help those

struggling with food insecurity by talking about the people that “game” the system. I have no doubt that there are people out there “gaming” the system. But the simple and stark truth that cannot be contested is that tens of millions of Americans are hungry. Food insecurity shouldn’t be a political football or an ideological battle ground. We are talking about people’s lives here. Let me conclude with this final thought. In my view, a discussion of food insecurity can be reduced to two simple questions. The first question that we all must answer is this: what kind of society does each of us want to live in? And the second question I ask you to consider is: when there are upwards of 48 million Americans who go to bed hungry, how can we stand back and refuse to help those genuinely in need? These are the questions for each of us.■
