Asian Women Meet on Asian Women Issues 亚裔妇女会议讨论亚洲妇女问题 It was an occasion to soundoff. The invitation went out to a diverse group of influential Asian women who are actively engaged in community building, through work or volunteerism... who believe in themselves as agents of change...who would like to bring about more equality, access, diversity in community engagement,to bring about a better life for ourselves, our families and those who will come after us... in effect to empower Asia women.

It was also a good time to find out from the Asian woman's perspective, how much progress has been made in Charlotte, within their sphere of influence, in building Access---> Inclusion---> Equity---> TRUST, given the ten years work of Crossroads Charlotte towards these goals, via the programs of organizational and community engagement. The Asian Chamber/CAACC was among the first organizations to sign up for the multi-faceted programs for building trust, with the help of the four scenarios for the future of Charlotte in 2015 : Fortress Charlotte ( worse case) , Class Act, The Beat Goes On, Eye to Eye( ideal case) . Inspired by the goals of Crossroads Charlotte, and with the help of the driving forces within the program, the Asian Dragon Boat Festival was born, founded by Dr. John Chen.

Parallel to these initiatives, the Women's Intercultural Exchange/WIE which is gearing up for the 10th anniversary in 2016, was invited to be part of the conversation, as a prelude to the Multicultural Conference " Explore the Chasm Across Race & Culture, 10 Years Later.. This is to be held on

October 29 ,2015 at the Latin American Coalition Projects/ Latin American Contemporary Art venue on 1429 Bryant Street, Charlotte. Phin Xaypanga, President of Charlotte Asian Heritage Association/CAHA is among the conference panelists.

CEO of WIE Roberta Harper & Gwen Garnett, Honorary Trustee, & Dr. Nini, WIE Past President/CAACC Chairman Emerita & Past Prexy led the session with about 22 women from 8 countries who attended and participated in the robust discussions.

Both organizations have been working, via different modalities-to build SOCIAL CAPITAL and TRUST. This was in response to the study by Dr. Robert D. Putnam, political scientist & Malkin Professor of Public Policy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard. It put Charlotte at the bottom of the 50 states studied with regards to trust in the community. Crossroads Charlotte was formed to find solutions, funded by the Knights Foundation and the Foundation for the Carolinas.

A recent study by Dr. Putnam, again has Charlotte at the bottom of cities polled, as to the opportunities thereat, for upward mobility. The American dream, he says is out of reach for many of the young people today.

Clearly, this is not the future we envision for ourselves and the next generation, and we Asian women would want to try to do something about it.

A candid & open dialogue followed with the women sharing their personal experiences regarding "Access".

said that she was lucky that when she came to the US in the early 70's she was able to compete for a teaching position with CMS, because she came with a diploma and teaching experience.. She believes that solid qualifications should open access to opportunities. One must be prepared.

Liana Rebollo,Esq., with Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, nationally ranked as "Best Law Firms" (corporate & commercial law) commented that when her family arrived in Charlotte, she was able to compete, even as an immigrant, for the top scholarships at UNC Chapel Hill (Law School).

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints and the increasing number of applicants, she just hopes that her siblings and the other deserving high school graduates will be given similar opportunities for access to quality education.

RBH does a lot of pro bono work in the community; Dianne Bailey , Esq. helped WIE and the Filipino American Spirit thru Liana, get their 501(c) 3 non profit status.

Liana offered her pro bono services to the women present, who would like to set up a 501(c) 3 organization for charity & education.

Kiem Dang, Advisory Software Engineer, IBM Charlotte warns parents, that kids should be prepared for college earlier than their junior year in high school, to be able to compete with the thousands who vie for the limited admissions in the colleges of their choice., where now they have to compete globally, with outstanding applicants from other states and from abroad.

Amy Nguyen, a chemical engineer, IT Purchasing Admin & Consultant , IBM, current President of the Vietnamese Association serving the 10,000 Vietnamese in Charlotte, informed the group of their workshop to prepare the young Vietnamese Americans for college and in their professional career development. This is in line also with the CAACC initiative to make the Asian Americans competitive globally, by teaching them valuable "corporate" smarts as well as useful "street" smarts.

Malaya Sap, who has a Masters in Public Admin from UNCC, Financial Adviser, Northwestern Mutual, long time Burmese/Thai/Cambodian . Adviser of the Hmong students at UNCC, deplores the fact that most of the female Hmong students still have the traditional goal of getting married, caring for a home & family, rather than pursue careers. Perhaps with the next generation, it will improve, she hopes.

Celebrating Music that Unites our Community Coming October 3, 2015, Chun University, in cooperation with Opera Carolina, Confucius Institute of Pfeiffer University, Knight Theater, the Hearst Foundation, Arts and Science Council, and the North

The Asian Herald was celebrating its 20 year anniversary in 2012, and the Paper recognized eleven Asian leaders for their leadership and dedication for Asian Communities. The Jian Dong Award was given to Maestro Meena at the first Gala.

Chun University is proud to continue the proud tradition of this year’s gala. Opera Carolina: "With its breathtaking blend of visual, lyrical, and musical expression, Art Poetry Music is a moving celebration of world culture, and a brilliant spectacle of the Art that unites us."

Andrew Gangestad was a performer at the first gala, and we found out that he was an adopted Korean-born singer.

When he came to Charlotte to be in " Nabucco", Drs. Ki-Hyun

Carolina Council of the Arts, is sponsoring the Gala entitled Art, Poetry, Music for the third consecutive year. The first two years (2013 and 2014) were sponsored by the Asian Herald (along with the Confucius Institute, Tide and Times, Foundations of the Carolinas, Wells Fargo, NC Council of the Arts, and the Arts and Science Council).

Maestro James Meena invited world-renowned opera singers to the Gala, and they performed very familiar arias from well known operas.

International singers performed native songs in Korean, Chinese and Russian with full orchestra.

Confucius Institute brought calligrapher Dr. Zhao Hong and his Chinese script on screen & Sunny Chun sponsored him which was very impressive and and found out about his adoption unique for American audiences. and also that he had found his

biological mother in 2007 after a long search.

His life story i n s p i r e d Drs. Chun, and they discussed the matter with Maestro Meena. They wanted to have Mr. & Mrs. Gangestad who adopted Andrew and raised him to be such an artist and also recognize other Asian adoptive parents at the October Gala. They all agreed it is a wonderful thing.

Drs. Chun w e n t to Korea in June and met Andrew's biological mother and

had interview with her. They also spoke about the Gala which they introduced as " Love Gala Concert" with mass media reporters in Seoul, Korea.

July's edition of the famous magazine "Opera & Dancing" featured an article about the October gala concert and the interview with Drs. Chun.

Stars of this year’s gala include Xu Zhong, Conductor (Pagalicci & Aleko in this season of Opera Carolina), Andrew Richards, tenor (Fidelio), Xu Lei, soprano

(Fidelio), Andrew Gangestad, bass, Maria Katzarava Hernandez, soprano (Fidelio), and Joshua Stewart, tenor (Pagliacci & Aleko).

The Johnson C. Smith University Choir, Sybill Schwarz -visual artist, The Opera Carolina Orchestra and Korean & Chinese Folk Songs & Poems, Chinese & Korean Dance will be additions to this year's e v e n t .

C h i n e s e a d o p t i v e parents in Charlotte area have formed a community group and have a mailing list.

Chun University will invite all of them, and also they will be recognized at the gala.

Andrew’s adoptive parents are one couple among many the gala seeks to honor in this one-of-a-kind event! The First Asian Church (1977) in Charlotte VBS Charlotte Presbyterian Church Charlotte Presbyterian Church is the first Asian Church in Charlotte, established in August 28, 1977. When the church started, Koreans in Charlotte were excited to have meeting place because they were homesick and wanted to meet other Koreans in Charlotte area.

There were 150 Koreans at the opening worship service, and the Korean population in Charlotte was under 200. It was an interdenominational church, housing all denominations including Roman Catholics and some un-churched. The Church’s focus was local

camp program - all day VBS for Thursday through Saturday.

KAPC continued VBS for ten years and children recall now that how wonderful time it was.

KAPC moved to new building in year 2000 as we faced new millennium and with new vision.

Numbers of Korean churches in Charlotte area increased to over 30. And KAPC had a new vision: "Multi Ethnicity Church."

The Church decided to drop “Korean,” and at congregation meeting chose the new church name "Charlotte Presbyterian Church (CPC)." The church is affiliated with Presbyterian Church

evangelism due to the numbers of non-Christians who were homesick and came to church every Sunday for fellowship.

Ten years later in 1987, Korean American Churches in Charlotte area grew over 10 in various denominations and increased in the number of Christian participation as population increased.

In the beginning Church name was Korean Church of Charlotte, but the name was changed to Charlotte Korean Presbyterian Church (KAPC).

KAPC is still the largest and the oldest among 10 churches and had its own building since 1979.

In July 1990, KAPC started Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the first time in all the Charlotte Korean Churches. It was the greatest festival for all Korean American children in Charlotte area because most of children were boring during summer vacation and desired a place to go, learn, and play.

Most parents couldn't afford to send their kids to summer camp retreat. But KAPC offered free registration in VBS day

CPC resumed the VBS ministry in 2014 after almost 10 years break.

That year, we had a wonderful time of learning about Love of God with the theme, "God loves us, Love each other" by traveling universe through a space trip after BLAST OFF. For our field trip on Saturday all of us went to IMAX and experienced Vast Universe and mighty God's operation in the universe.

This year (2015), CPC had VBS with theme "Jesus is with us always," and all kids ventured Outback Rock into SOLID FAITH. All church members participated in VBS with donations, providing meals with snacks & lunch, prizes for good behavior tickets which every student had minimum 18 tickets, and more than all the above -- prayer. church event that everyone enjoyed. Even though VBS was for K-5, all ages participated. Jr. & High school students were crew leaders or assistance for station teachers, and college or young adults were station teachers. The entire program was in English.

On Sunday, July 12th, the week of VBS, all 2nd generation church members including those could not help VBS got together and decorated sanctuary, stations, and dining room.

We had 3 stations and 3 crews with all age mixed. Pre-school class kept their own station except when they gathered for group meetings for worship. We had exciting music with motions and dancing and message from the BIBLE. All crews had leaders and assistants, and they made rounds to Rock-Solid Bible Adventures, Projects with a Purpose, Outback Games.

Delicious snacks were provided in the mid-morning & afternoon while crews making rounds to next station, and we had lunch after making two rounds of station trip.

Each station teachers were waiting crews at the door with smile on their face. After 3 crews made all

three stations, we had all together craft time, and we learned that God is always with us even to the end of the age.

On Saturday, July 18, we took a field trip to Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville, NC. All students, teachers, and some parents joined the trip, and 54 of us enjoyed watching animals that we don't see outside of the ranch. It was a hot and bright sunny day when we left church, and we enjoyed the wagon ride and seeing all the animals.

Then we had wonderful outdoor lunch that church mother members prepared: "KIMBOB" & Bojangles chicken lunch. Lunch was GOOD. When we started to come back to church the rain we needed so much started to pour down, and we praised the Lord for giving wonderful weather for our field trip. When we came back to church we had our last VBS worship time of praising that we had learned and sung during VBS and last message.

Some gave their heart to Jesus and received Jesus as their personal Savior. And some rededicated their lives to Jesus to be stronger Christians.

We had missions offering right before closing. This would be sent to "A Cup of Water International" which is a mission organization that provides clean water to needy children all over the world. Mission offering was $535.00 and for a group of 32 elementary age children, this was a very large amount and is proof that the parents who sent their children to CPC VBS supported their children to share and love others in need.

To finish VBS we had our talent market where everyone redeemed earned tickets for their good behavior for prizes. It was a great joy to watch the children redeeming prizes with their tickets, and we thought someday we will stand before the Lord who will reward us for all the work we do now and how joyful it will be!

We can only imagine, but we know it will be more than we know now and it is just a small taste.

We look forward for that day while we do our best for our Lord JESUS Christ now, and we look forward for 2016 VBS already and we hope many more students will come and experience God's LOVE & CARE next year ■

Remembering Family History: A 100 year old Korean Experience

It was 1912, and Dr. Wilbur H. Minford was serving as a surgeon in the US Army. His station was Japanese-occupied Korea.

Wilbur was born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, on March 14, 1885 to English immigrants Thomas

with a wedding in England. After serving for a period at the King George Military Hospital in London, England between 1916 and 1917, Wilbur married Mildred Florence Brightmore, “Billie,” in London, England at the Parish Church of St. John’s Waterloo Road on June 2, 1917. Both worked at the King George Military Hospital, one of the medical centers quickly erected to house the flood of wounded soldiers being sent back from the western front of the Great War. Dr. Minford served as a surgeon, Billie as a nurse.

medical service to the Seoul Mining Company places their time and location of their work in Korea. It also notes their service to the King George Military Hospital during World War I. Passports and ships’ logs document their daughter Joan (later to marry a brigadier general in the US Army) and son Philip (US Navy, Pearl Harbor survivor and World War II veteran) were both born in Korea during their parents’ work at the mining company. Pictures tell only a fraction of the story: a carriage with young Joan and baby Philip;

Fatkin Minford and Elizabeth J. Palgrain. Thomas was a supervisor at the Hazelton coal mine, a connection that later proved significant to Wilbur’s work in Korea.

Like most family stories, the account was passed from father to children and then to grandchildren.

The memories are now faded and the story generations old, but

it was real and is enhanced by rare photographs of the Minford family's Korean experience.

According to his passport, Dr. Wilbur Minford worked in Chiksan and Kapsan, Chosen from February 1912 to May 1916.

But the family’s journey began

and Billie traveled to Pennsylvania and then to Holkol and Tul Mi Chung, Chosen (Korea) to serve as surgeon and nurse in the Seoul Mining Company (previously the Collbran-Bostwick Development Company). His passport application shows they arrived in Seoul on August 21, 1917. According to historian Edwin Mills, Korea opened its mining operations to the United States, Great Britain, and Germany in 1883 and continued to allow outside services through the height of gold mining operations at least through the mid-1910s.

A photograph of my greatgrandmother Mildred in her nurse’s uniform accompanies a list bearing her name and my great-grandfather’s. This Roll of Honour of those who provided

the children with their "amah" (Korean nanny); a Christmas photo of the growing Philip with his puppy on the steps of their home (1922); the children upon the lap of their father; the lovely Mildred F. Minford (later Abbott) carrying a small bundle of blossoming branches. The family left Korea sometime between 1920 and 1922 according to dated photographs and ships’ logs.

What the photographs and ancient papers do not convey is the tale passed down of Dr. Minford's service to Korea. The story is told that sometime during his residence there, Dr. Minford was called upon to operate on a member of the royal family. The man's life was saved and gifts were bestowed in

appreciation of his service. Based on the only record of my greatgrandfather’s arrival in Korea (post-Korean control), this story is difficult to validate. However, on a wall in the home of my aunt (Philip's eldest daughter, Jane) hangs a delicate tapestry given by the royal family. The gift of a china tea set symbolizes their depth of royal gratitude. And in the china

cabinet of my own father's home (Philip's youngest of twin sons, Harold) sits a fragile yet intricately painted porcelain decanter.

Japanese-style images on the decanter etched with Chinese script brought home from a tour of Korea is a reminder of the complex political scene. The remaining gifts are evidence of a time and place long ago. Yet the honor of those gifts remains in the hearts of my family as we remember the rare privilege bestowed.

In June of 2014, a process of interviews began which brought me into employment with Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun of Chun Group, Inc. How could Dr. Wilbur Minford know then that nearly 100 years later, his great-granddaughter would be serving as public relations director for a Korean accounting firm in North Carolina? The story has come full circle, the memories refreshed, the photographs dusted off and given new life. For myself, the honor is stronger and the ties deeper. The people of Korea have emerged stronger from a tragic history, and their royal family is non-existent due to war and political upheaval. But the gifts of life bestowed by the skilled hand of my great-grandfather is a reminder of my connection with the people of Korea and of how God has woven the tapestry of life in the most intricate of patterns!

USCIS’ Proposal to Expand Waiver Program

On July 22, 2015 the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officially published in the Federal Register a proposed rule which will significantly expand the provisional waiver program and benefit thousands of people currently living the United States without a lawful status. The USCIS first implemented a pilot program for granting provisional waivers of unlawful presence with the publication of the final rule on January 2, 2013. This program became effective on March 4, 2013. Under the current provisional waiver program, immediate relatives (parents, spouses, and unmarried children under 21 years old) of United States citizens can apply for a waiver of their unlawful presence of the United States before applying for an immigrant visa abroad. The waiver is provisional meaning it is not granted until the applicant actually leaves the United States and obtains an immigrant visa.

The provisional waiver program was a huge deal and has become a big success.

Before the provisional waiver program was started, the process of obtaining permanent resident status for a person who came to the United States unlawfully, that is without being inspected and admitted or paroled at an official point of entry, was very difficult, time-consuming, and risky. A person who has not been admitted or paroled, generally cannot obtain permanent resident status within the United States and has to leave the country and apply for an

immigrant visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. However, any person who remains in this country for more than 180 days or one year and then leaves is not allowed to come back lawfully for three or ten years, respectively.

The law does allow individuals who are barred from coming back for having accrued unlawful presence to apply for a waiver. To be eligible for the waiver, applicants must demonstrate that their qualifying relative (parent or spouse who are either United States citizens (USC) or lawful permanent residents (LPR)), would suffer extreme hardship if the waiver is not granted. However, before the provisional waiver program began, a person could only apply for the waiver after he or she has already left the United States, appeared in person before a consular officer abroad for an interview, and been denied the immigrant visa. Such a person would then need to file the application for a waiver with all the documents supporting the extreme hardship and wait five to six months for the application to be processed. That person would have to remain abroad, away from his or her family for several months and possibly even for three or ten years if the waiver is eventually denied. The uncertainty of the outcome and the long wait abroad made the waiver unappealing to many who did not want to risk the possibility of not being able to come back to the U.S. and being separated from their families for a long time.

allows applicants to apply for the waiver of the unlawful presence bar while still in the United States, without having to leave the country first. That way, the applicant does not have to take a risk of leaving and not being able to come back.

It also significantly reduces the time that applicants have to remain away from their families and jobs or school from half a year or more to just two or three weeks.

However, as currently formulated, the provisional waiver is only available to immediate relatives of USCs and restricts the group of qualifying relatives to USC parents or spouses. So for example, a person who is married and over 21 years old and is petitioned by an LPR spouse cannot apply for a provisional waiver even though he or she might have a USC parent who would suffer extreme hardship if this person has to remain outside the United States for three or ten years. That is because neither a spouse of an LPR nor a married child of a USC is an immediate relative.

The proposed rule that was published last week by the USCIS will expand the category of people eligible to apply for a provisional waiver. Under the proposed rule, not only immediate relatives of United States citizens will be included, but all applicants who are beneficiaries of family-based and employment-based petitions as well as diversity visa program selectees will be able to apply for a provisional waiver. But more importantly, applicants for the new provisional waiver will no longer be restricted to having to demonstrate extreme hardship to their USC

parents and spouses, but will also be allowed to obtain the waiver based on an extreme hardship to their LPR parents and spouses.

With the expanded provisional waiver program, many people who previously could not apply will now be able to take advantage of the provisional waiver and not have to take the risk involved with the regular waiver. For example, a spouse of an LPR who is the beneficiary of an immediate relative petition filed by his or her USC son or daughter — who is not a qualifying relative for purposes of the waiver, because extreme hardship has to be shown to parents or spouses, not children — cannot apply for a provisional waiver under the current rule. But, this person will be able to apply for the provisional waiver under the proposed new rule because he or she will be able to use the LPR spouse as the qualifying relative to demonstrate the extreme hardship.

This proposed rule is a welcome step in the right direction by the USCIS. The expanded provisional waiver program will benefit thousands of people currently living and working in this country without a lawful status. It will also benefit the United States economically, socially, and politically, by bringing undocumented foreigners out of the shadow and allowing them to fully participate in the economy, obtain college education, support their families, and eventually apply for citizenship. However, it is not yet a final rule and it still requires applicants to show that a qualifying relative will suffer extreme hardship, which is a high standard that is difficult to meet. An experienced immigration attorney should be consulted to prepare the waiver application and supporting documents to ensure the highest chance of approval.■

Charlotte Asian Basketball League The Charlotte Asian Basketball League concluded it’s fourth league season on June 13th in front of a capacity crowd and a visit from Charlotte mayor, Dan Clodfelter. The esteemed mayor holds a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College then became a Rhodes Scholar and earned a bachelor’s degree from Oxford University in England and then a Yale law degree. He served as chairman of the Mecklenburg planning commission, Charlotte city councilman and NC state senator prior to being appointed as mayor in April 2014. I jokingly asked the mayor if he was even partly Asian and he consequently asked why I asked and I told him because he had academic attainments and a work resume that would make even an Asian parent would be proud. Mayor Clodfelter was very informed and in touch with the challenges and changing dynamics of the Charlotte Asian community. He spoke to me regarding the new wave of refugees from Burma (Myanmar) and Bhutan.

He thanked the Asian community for it’s contributions to Charlotte and for making Charlotte a truly international city.

The mayor was amongst the many performers, cultural acts/ demonstrations and VIP guests that made appearances during this league season. The list includes some of the most talented, accomplished, influential and interesting people in Charlotte.

The league is grateful to the following list of groups/individuals who gave of their time and shared their wisdom and talents with the league and Asian community : 1) Melissa Chrischel Olarte, a UNC Charlotte student, inspired the crowd with her acapella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner to begin the season on April 25th.

2) On May 2nd, Dr. Vu Nguyen, a nationally renowned physiatrist and developer of the Charlotte Asian basketball League mentorship program, spoke to the players in the league about the importance of mentorship and his personal journey coming to America. On the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, he gave an emotional account of his personal journey and struggles from his

family’s evacuation from Saigon to experiences in refugee camps and the faith, family and focus that allowed him to become who he is today. He challenged the young men to reach for their dreams and offered his assistance and availability as mentor.

3) The Charlotte Hornets cheerleaders, the Honey Bees, along with the new league mascot, Dani the Dragon, performed for the league on May 9th.

4) Senator Malcolm Graham spoke to league players and fans on May 9th regarding the many contributions of the Asian community and the importance of participating in the electoral process via voting.

9) 500+ win coach, Will Robinson, inspired the young men of the league to guide the younger men/players of the league and challenged them to be good role models. His May 23rd appearance

Charlotte Vice Chancellor, took time away from a very busy graduation weekend and gave a very important message to the league on May 9th. His message is there is only ONE RACE-the HUMAN RACE. He applauded the league commissioner for sharing his passion for making that a conscious reality in today’s diverse society.

6) The Rocky River HS ROTC honored us with a military color guard in observance of Memorial Day. I’m grateful to young men and women who gave up their vacation time to make the performance a reality.

7) Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Vicki Foster, took time out of her busy schedule during the time when the Chief Of Police, Rodney Monroe, had just announced a July retirement date.

11) Silver Moon Rising lead vocalist, Marissa Helbing, showed off the voice that makes her one of the most engaging singers in the Charlotte Asian community.

Her acapella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner to begin the May 30th league games demonstrated the vocal range, power and character that make her the dynamic talent that everyone loves to hear.

12) The Little Lotus Company, a Chinese dance troupe in Charlotte,

marked the beginning of what I hope to be a permanent fixture during upcoming league seasons, cultural performances. When I asked Xiasong Her, troupe leader/ choreographer, to have the troupe do a performance, she told me that she had reservations. She said the she didn’t think that her girls were interested in basketball nor did she think the players were interested in Chines cultural dancing. i replied, “As learned and cultured people, the more reason we need to make it happen.

Your girls would be deprived of seeing the modern cultural phenomenon and grace and athleticism of basketball players and my players will miss out of the grace and majesty of Chinese cultural dancing that has endured for thousands of years.” Needless to say, the girls loved Charlotte Asian League Basketball and the players ,fans and families loved the Little Lotus Company dance troupe.

Cultural performances provide a means via which league players can be exposed to the cultural activities that reconnect them to their rich Asian heritage and their community organizations.

The league season ended in exciting fashion with the Assassinz prevailing as league champions vs Team Pilipinas. The Assassinz, led by team captain, Steven Villayvong, overcame all odds and surprised the league as the #4 seed to become the first team in league history to win a second championship. The Assassinz represent something near and dear to the league commissioner’s heart, a coming together of various ethnicities working towards a common goal.

The Assassinz feature players from Laos, Philippines, Guam and Vietnam.The Charlotte Asian Basketball League desperately needs your support via donations, event and team promotional sponsorship and players. The league has been fortunate to have received support from the various institutions throughout the community but the one that it needs the most-the Asian community organizations.

6th Annual ERIC C. HUGO Memorial Golf Tournament for Charity

Some years ago, 2011 FACC President Bert Rodriguez, an engineer, who is considered as the Golf Tournament "King" by the Filipino community, took the initiative, and with determination and total commitment, organized a golf tournament in honor of everybody's friend, Eric Castillo Hugo, Vice President of Bank of America, Administrator of Treasury & Portfolio Management.

Eric, was a "bro" & golf buddy, a beloved and well respected member of the Filipino American community,( famous for his leche flan & other signature Filipino dishes, and an endearing laugh), who met an untimely death on a tennis court on a hot July afternoon. He was only 59. He left behind his wife of 30 years, Mercedes, now a retired Section Head of Premier Healthcare, daughter Erica Ester, a pharmacist graduate of UNC Chapel Hill , who was then preparing for her wedding in Chicago,( now a mom of a cute baby girl) and son John Christopher, an engineering graduate of UNC State & an accomplished painter.

A fitting tribute to Eric, who was an avid golfer even in his youth in the Philippines, the golf tournament was to raise high school scholarship funds for the poor but deserving, at his alma mater, the de la Salle High School in Lipa, Batangas, hometown of parents Pedro & Ester Hugo.

Eric' s siblings in the Philippinesbrothers Gerry & Ed, sisters Edna H. Jaramillo, Elyn H. Catimbuhan, Erma H. Alejandro, were to administer this Eric Hugo & Friends Endowment Fund.

For the past six years, Bert diligently took charge of the tournament from logistics, budget, venue selection, player recruitment,sponsorship solicitation, tournament format,

players, the tournament has grown over the years. and has become a major sports event for the Filipino American community..

This year's tournament was held at The Divide Golf Club, Matthews, a public golf course, with a rating of 3 1/2 gold stars, par 72.. There was a record crowd of 64 players, from all over, one player coming from as far as Dubai. Eric's family came from the Philippines

scoring rules and regulations and prizes. The closely knit Filipino American golfers, and their spouses, supported Bert all the way, in registration, food/beverage coordination and program./socials.

Vietnamese Association Moon Festival

Imagine visiting Vietnam where families take their children to experience something magical.

You walk through the streets and visually see dancers ferociously entertaining children with their acrobatic moves and large fierce lion heads. You hear the beat of drums that feeds energy to the lions. You stop by a small shop and purchase moon-cakes as gifts to your family and friends. Finally, you see many children parading around with colorful lanterns of various shapes and sizes. Their smiles from ear to ear exerting endless amounts of happiness. This festival is known as Tet Trung Thu, or Mid-Autumn Festival/Children’s Festival, and is the second largest holiday in Vietnam after Tet. It dates back as far as 15-20,000 years ago in Asia

and traditionally held on the 15th day of the 8th Lunar month. The festival revolves around the children and is said to help parents make up for lost time with their children after a long harvest season. Today, the festival encourages affection for children and promotes education, dance and arts. It’s a time to show love for our children and teaching them Vietnamese culture and tradition.

Come experience this magical festival on Saturday, September 27 from 5-9pm at Mouzon Church.

A unique opportunity for all high-school students of Asian ancestry to showcase their creative writing abilities in demonstrating their cultural heritage by entering in an essay writing contest.

CAHA’s mission is to promote Asian heritage by planning, organizing and sponsoring traditional cultural events to enhance the visibility of Asian ethnic groups as an active and integral part of culturally vibrant community.

The essay should be on the topic of being Asian-American, covering the challenges and the ways you overcome but not limited to the uniqueness defined by the character, traditions, appearance and aspirations. Consider how your life growing up in 2015 compared to your family member who first came to USA, how your family or cultural values helped you in defining your character, and how does that moment in your family history compare to your experience growing up both Asian and American.

Eligibility:  Any student currently enrolled in any high-school in Mecklenburg County and the surrounding counties (Cabarrus, Union, York, Lincoln, Iredell, Catawba and Gaston).  Please attach the following information with the essay: full name, mailing address, phone, email address, name of high school, current grade and birthdate.

Important Notes:  The essay submitted should be an original work in 500-750 words in double-space, APA style format.  Your entry will be judged based on creativity, originality and skill in interpreting the theme and expressing your ideas.  The essay will be judged by a panel of accomplished educators, literature and journalism experts. 隆重悼念抗战老兵 — 国民革命军抗日前线救护队 少尉指导员白君燕女士逝世三周年暨百年冥诞 （1915.03.10-2012.07.15) 南溫泉童年憶趣 白朝椿 且說七 十多年前 對日抗戰 中期，我 家住在陪 都重慶郊 外小鎮南 溫泉。南 溫泉有一 條風光猗 旎的花 溪。花溪 下遊的鄰 鎮叫小溫 泉，那裡 正是當年 「中央政 治學校大學部」所在之地。政校的學員們都是當代青 年精英，日後在政界展頭露角者大有人在。南溫泉鎮 上有個民眾服務處，其中有閱覽室，圖書館，橋棋 社，乒乓球場，茶座等。是當地知識分子聚會之所。 鄰近名媛淑女們喜好光臨該處。政校的青青子衿們當 然趨之若鶩。 那時君燕大姐從湖北前線抗日救護隊 撤退，回到在重慶城裡的「戰地工作團」任職，官拜 幹士，週末有時回家小住。 記得那是在一個春光明媚的週六下午，就讀初小二 年級的我陪伴著風姿卓越的大姐來到民眾服務處。一 進大門就引來了不少注目禮。恰巧此時來了一位英姿 煥發的青年王先生。此君對君燕姐是殷勤備至，答問 有序。而大姐也表現得落落大方，應對得宜。看來二 人相談甚歡。 王君是我們湖南同鄉中的青年才俊。 當地的同鄉們都知道他是政校名列前茅的高材生，現 留校在政校大學部當助教。我與此君，曾經在這民眾 服務處有過數面之緣，他一直也都把我當小弟弟一般 看待。那天他倆的交談時，偶爾還要我穿幫忙針引 線。其後這位王先生就開始常來我家走動，拜見我們 父母。不久之後他就與君燕大姐定婚，結婚，成了我 們的王大哥。正是： 南溫泉，小溫泉，花溪流水長相聯。 君燕姐，厚德兄，千里姻緣一線牽。 幾十年來，我一直以為他們的相識是由我促成的。 直到君燕姐來美後，有次談及此事，才知道原來他們 早已在楊允元先生介紹之下認識了。那次的“巧遇” 其實並不是那麼樣巧！

了，才对家里亲戚间的书信来往有了兴趣， 母亲家族的信都有故事，这样就渐渐地认识 了大姨妈和大姨夫，知道了她一家的事情。 及至后来见了她，并不感到陌生。 大姨妈一家到美国后，她的信就来的多 了，大概一星期就能看到一封，主要就是写 在美国的生活和感受，其中写得最多的就是 儿女的事情。这些信连起来看，华人移民美 国的故事就跃然其上了，里面有艰辛，有欢 乐，有对子女在外奋斗的感叹，也有对国内 亲友的挂念，更多的是倾诉，倾诉她对身边 一些摆脱不掉的不如意的苦恼，还说她信了 教。有时候看了她的信，我疑惑她为什么要 举家去美国，仅为了圆梦和信教吗？可为什

么又一去不回呢？后来才理解这里面有她对当年错失出国 良机的追悔，也有对后来在国内被冤屈埋没的痛苦。想当 年她的夫婿可是中国银行的高级人才啊，镇反时却不幸被 迫离职，勉强以吃粉笔灰为生，她信中从不报怨命运，也 不谈时政，更不涉国家及外交之大事，虽没有一字赞美美 国，但我感到她还是喜欢美国生活的，并努力在适应，她 的这种努力令我赞叹。世界上没有绝对的好生活，只有适 合自己的，就是好生活。看到她一家人从适应到适合的美 国移民生活，她的晚年无疑是幸福的。她以九十八岁的高 龄安息在了美国，祝爱国爱家的大姨妈在天国永生！

美哉， 夏威夷 那啟元 1.

引言

在 Hawaii（夏威夷）度假的日子里， 我每天都有 将那美景写下来的冲动；然而，每当我提起笔来 满脑子的图像却变不成一个文字。它的美丽使我 眼花缭乱，它的气息使我神智不清。它那美的咒 语让我像只追踪花香的蝴蝶，采花无数却没有真 正领会那美丽的机会。时过境迁，我终于在它的 魅力下清醒过来。但那令人震惊，摄人魂魄的美 景却不时地浮现在我的眼前。。。 常言道，独饮不如分享。既然忘不了，就让我们 一起神游 Hawaii 四岛吧！ 2.

Honolulu (“汉娜露露”) – 山水人文

大概是因为十小时飞行劳累，无论是在飞机降 落，还是乘车到宾馆的途中，我都没有感到 Honolulu 有什么特别。在床上休息了几分钟，开 门来到阳台，这个美丽的城市就像拨开了红头盖 的新娘，露出了它美丽的容貌。左面是山，右面 是海，在艳阳下分外妖娆。我顿时精神气爽便与 家人到海滨大道逛逛。看到众多熟悉的面孔和那 黑色的头发。我仿佛漫步在中国的海南岛。我敢 断定这是全美亚裔人口比例最大的城市。再看海 边的高楼和海滩公园，我知道这是一个文化中 心。 Pearl Harbor（珍珠港）不再是美国太平洋舰队的 总部，而是一个军事纪念馆。它是一个被群山环 绕，一面对洋的海湾。它的美丽和平静使雄心勃 勃的秃鹰在此忘记了海外的战争。太平洋舰队住 在这里就像睡在西施怀中的吕布，虽然有时伸伸 懒腰，但终究被美人灌醉。果然，1941 年 12 月 7 日晚，除了在太平洋游戈的航母，全军覆没在珍 珠港海底。。。秃鹰就是秃鹰，它不再醉卧海港 而是展翅高飞，他们很快炸沉了日军偷袭珍珠港 的四艘航母，并在日本投下了两颗原子弹。复仇 的鹰终于雪耻，饱受日军凌辱的祖国也因此结束 了抗日战争。 通过一个二战时留下来的山洞，爬上 Diamond Head （钻石山）顶峰的碉堡，依山傍海的 Honolulu 城就在我的脚下，山上的每个至高点都 有防空炮台和碉堡。可见太平洋舰队并非没有战 略部署。无论谁到了这里，无论用什么样的照相 工具，他都可以照出可以上画报的照片。如果说 这里的美景像舞台上浓妆艳抹的花旦，那么岛的 另一端 Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse （“玛卡普” 灯塔）的风景则像出浴的美人。在绝壁顶上向下 观望，三面是深蓝色的大海，绝壁半腰有一灯塔 照亮航行的船只。海浪冲刷着近处的两个礁岛； 艳阳下，这一大一小的礁岛就像在蓝色平绒展示 台上，放在两朵棉花上的红宝石，娇艳夺目。绝 壁下，海滩边船只在水中漫游；绝壁上，空中彩 色的滑翔机在展翅盘旋。在这里，你也许不想照 相而是坐在绝壁上慢慢地欣赏风景。 Hanouma Bay （“汉娜码”海湾） 是火山爆发后 海水浸入形成的海湾。它是一个天然的马蹄形海 湾，海湾的周边是褐红色的熔岩，它好像用大钻 钻过的一个大洞。湾内海水清澈见底，海底白沙 与珊瑚相间，水中各种鱼类与人共游，从上向下 望去就像一幅水墨画。Kailua Beach Park (“可露 牙”海滩公园) 则是更加开阔的靠山海滩。海面上 清天白云，山顶上云雾罩顶。不远处还有个无人 的礁岛。如果你喜欢清静，开车到 Honolulu 的西 南部，你会发现若大的海滩游客却寥寥无几。你

所用材料是从多国运 来。国王雄才伟略， 励志图治；周游列 强，一心要建造一个 英式王朝。但天不与 命，病逝在访问美国 的途中。国王的妹妹 接位，她是一个聪明 坚强的独身女士。因 参与复辟帝制的罪， 她被西方支持的商人 囚禁在冷宫中三年。 一针一案；她用色 彩，图案，和文字将夏威夷王朝的兴衰史绣成一 幅巨大的壁毯。一灯一琴；她用眼泪，心血，和 歌声将自己的忏悔和对神赞美谱写成曲。

全设施，全凭上下的车辆礼让通行。道路左右， 忽有灌木竹林，忽有红，黄，紫色的整树鲜花； 山沟上下，忽有瀑布飞流直下，忽有小溪潺潺流 过。山拐角处，绝壁天险，白浪滔天。兴奋的老 婆和女儿不时指出那勾魂的景点。专心的车夫心 中苦不堪言：早知此路如此美丽，我当请个司机 开这个吉普。 穿过一片竹林，我终于看到一个放松 一下的机会。进入山门，门前售票员 说这是 Garden of Eden（“伊甸 园”），并加一句说就像圣经中的一 样。开车进入其中才知道这非凡间的 园林。此园整山是珍奇的树木，花 草，和水果。除绕园曲径小路，看不 出一点人工营造的迹象。不知名的大 榕树，像巨伞覆盖大地；树枝底端有 垂直向下长的一根分枝插入大地，你 分不出树干还是树根，他们一起形成 庞大支撑体系；你不难想象火山爆发 的蘑菇云与此树有相像之处。伟大的

神总是通过自然向人们展示他的秘密和启示。神 奇的彩虹树树皮细腻，色泽丰富，纹如彩虹。传 说中的面包树也在这里安家。百年芒果树上果实 累累。来到这里我才知道竹林并不是一种，而是 一科；各式各样的竹类都可以在此找到。如果我 是个植物学家，我会在这里住上一年来研究这里 的各种珍奇植物。这里没有圣经中伊甸园的金银 宝石玛瑙河，却有白色的瀑布飞流直下山谷与海 水汇合。在美丽的 Garden of Eden 中，我心中充满 喜乐和兴奋，那段聚精会神的驾驶在这里得到了 圆满的报酬。 Hana Road 的顶端是 Seven Sacred Pools（七圣 池）。Seven Sacred Pools 隐藏在一大山谷中。大 谷两侧树木茂盛，从大谷里有七个瀑布，七个池 塘，上一个瀑布流入下一个池塘；大谷开口峭壁 直下海口；波涛汹涌，震耳如雷。有谁能有此手 笔，开凿这样奇妙雄伟的画卷？如果七仙女在此 下凡，她们一定纵身入海，使出全身的解数在海 中玩个痛快，然后飞入谷中，各占一池，在瀑布 下解衣冲发，在清池里舒展身躯。也不知那七位 勇士偷了她们的衣服，娶了她们成为 Polynesian 七个部落的压岛夫人。。。要不然 Polynesian 的 女人能如此妖娆善舞？ 第二天，我们向 Haleakala National Park（“哈雷 阿卡拉”国家公园）行驶。Haleakala National Park 是高山公园。顶峰海拔一万英尺(大约三千三 百多米) 。进入公园便是 Z 字形的盘山公路。虽然 险峻，但道路宽阔坡度不大。从山底仰望，山峰 在白云中忽隐忽现。驾车到半山腰就进入云海之 中，让我们有一种飘然如仙的感觉。停车向下遥 望，只见蓝色的大海四周被云彩镶边，要不是从 海边爬上来，我还以为那海是蓝天的一部分。在 驾车爬山的过程中，常遇见那些乘车到半山腰， 骑车而下领略驾云感觉的“仙群”。也不时看到 孤身单车的爬山勇士。看到眼前躬身蹬车的的骑 士，我驱车绕过，口中念起李白《梦游天姥吟留 别》的词句： 脚著谢公屐，身登青云梯。 半壁见海日，空中闻天鸡。 恰是这样的勇士，才真正体会到这美妙词句的真 意吧！ 来到山顶，我们好像登上了火星。举头蓝天白 日，低头云海深谷。山顶范围浩大，四周山丘延 绵缭绕，中间一大盆地。盆地上有红褐色的小沙 堡和沙滩，而那盆地正是过去的火山口。望日台 上，有人讲他早上两点出发来这里观看日出的壮 丽景色。向下望去，我仿佛看到了夏威夷的其它 岛屿。望日台对面的山峰是谢绝游客的国家天文 台，也只有这个人工设施提醒我们还在这地球 上。。。 当老婆和女儿在房间内研究明天行程的时候，我 一人走到阳台欣赏这太平洋宁静的夜色，漆黑的 天空缀满明暗闪烁的星星，它就像一个巨大的半 球倒扣在这灰亮的海面上，

首届华联杯国际青少年艺术大奖赛 报名延期至 7 月 31 日 在过去的几个月里，由海 外华人文化体育艺术联合会 主办的首届华联杯国际青少 年艺术大奖赛得到了诸多热 忱积极的协办单位与个人的 支持与帮助。截至六月底， 我们已经收到来自北美洲 （美国的 23 个州），亚洲的 1171 件艺术作品。作品的体 裁非常广泛，作品的艺术水平都相当的高，据相关的艺 术老师介绍，不少参赛学生都曾多次在全美，国内大陆 的多项大型艺术赛事上获的大奖。鉴于本次的参赛作品 水平相当好，并得到夏洛特市历史博物馆的支持，组委 会决定将本次获奖艺术作品在夏洛特市历史博物馆对公 众展出。时间是今年 11 月 11 日-30 日。

샬롯 한인회 소식 The News of Korean Association

샬롯 동남부체전 3등우승 지난 6월26일부터 27일까지 제 34회 동남부 체전이 노르크로스의 메도크릭 고등학교에서 열렸다. 미 동남부에 있는 11개 도시에서 이 체전에 참석했고 샬롯은 72명의 선수 및 임원진이 출전하였다. 규모 및 인구수 때문에도 아틀란타가 종합체전에서는

터뜨렸다. 선수들은 자신들이 출전한 종목에 최선을 다 하였고 임원들도 선수 못지않게 운동장을 여기저기 뛰어 다니며 선수들의 뒷바라지를 최선을 다했다. 72명의 샬롯한인회원들이 일심단결하여 얻은 영광이었다. 한인회장 전승현씨는 동남부체전에 13 년동안 선수로 또 임원으로 이 체전에 앞에서 뛰어 왔었는데 체전에서 종합성적 3등은 회장이

시*음악*예술의 향연 사랑의 컨서트 아시아 어린이 입양 가족 감사의 밤 시 음악 예술의 향연을 시작한 2012년 9월은 아시안 헤럴드 발행 20주년 기념이었다. 오페라 캐롤라이나의 10년 동안 이사로 샬롯 오페라 공연을 할때마다 주역이 한국인이나 중국인이 올때는 본지 발행인 전기현 박사 부부는 항상 스폰서로 오페라 캐롤라이나를 협조해 왔는데 본지 20주년을 맞아 마에스트로 제임스 미나씨와 함께 이 시 음악 예술의 향연을 시작하게 되었다. 세계적인 오페라 가수들을 연결하는 일을 제임스 미나씨가 교섭하고 전기현 박사는 이

지역 아시아인들의 관심과 협조를 맡아서 1회 갈라 콘서트를 훌륭하게 했다. 1회 컨서트에 세계적인 미국 오페라 가수들뿐 아니라 바리톤 윤형,중국인 베이스 선 유 와 베이스 앤드류 갱스태드씨등이 출연하여 하루 저녁에 오페라 몇을 본듯한 황홀한 컨서트를 가졌다. 특히 바리톤 윤형씨의 "청산에 살리라" 곡을 들을때는 한국인들이

무척이나 흥분했고 미국에서 클래식 컨서트에서 한국 가곡까지 듣게 되어 부라보를 열심히 외쳤었다. 그리고 아시안 헤럴드 20주년을 기념해서 그동안 지역사회를 위해 수고한 아시아인들 11명에게 감사패와 함께 그들의 노고를 지역사회에 알렸다. 아시안 헤럴드가 시작한 Jian Dong

Award 는 아시안들에게 특별한 관심과 오페라 월드에 공헌이 큰 제임스 미나씨에게 수여 되었다. 앤드루 갱스터씨는 한국에서 입양된 메트로 폴리탄 오페라 가수라고 소개받고 인사만 나누었는데 2014 년 10월에 샬롯 오페라 캐롤라이나가 베르디의 "나부꼬" 를 공연할때 하이 프리스트 역을 맡아 굵고 묵직한 베이스 파트를 아주 훌륭한 성악실력을 발휘해서 공연했다. 그때도 전기현 박사 부부가 스폰서가 되었고 앤드류 갱스태드씨의 입양에 대한 이야기와 함께 2007 년에 그립고 그리던 생모를 찿게 되고 만난 개인 신상에 대해서 알게 되었다. 돐 갖지난 애기를 입양한 미국인 갱스테드씨 부부의 사랑을 듬북받고 성장하여 이제는 결혼해서 자녀들을 갖고 있고 어머니를 만나서 너무나 기뻣던 이야기는 가슴 뭉클한 사연들이었고 전기현 박사는

제임스 미나씨와 의논하여 2015 년 갈라 컨서트는 앤드류의 미국 양부모께 감사하며 아울러 22만명의 한국고아들을 입양한 미국사회에 한인으로서 감사를 표하고 또 이지역에 아시안 어린이들을 입양한 부모님들도 함께 초청하여 감사를 표하자는 제의에 쾌히 동의 하였다. 전기현 박사 부부는 지난 메르스가 막 시작했던 6월초에 앤드류 생모를 만나기 위해 한국에 나가서 충북 청주에 살고 있는 생모 김 진주씨를 6월 12일에 만나고 인터뷰를 했다. 지금 미국에 Andrew Gangestad 는 한국 이름이 정 무근 이었고 복잡한 가정 문제로 돐 갖 지난 아들을 생모 몰래 타인에 의하여 버려 졌으며 밑으로 딸 무영 이와 함께 아들을 찾을 희망으로 미혼모로 평생을 살아 온 한 많은 삶의 이야기를 들었다.

아들이 자기를 찾는다는 정보를 듣고 드디어 연결이 되어 2007 년에 아들을 보러 미국에도 왔고 지금까지 2번 다녀 갔지만 오페라 공연이나 무대에서 아들이 노래하는 모습은 아직 관람을 못했다고 한다. 아들을 찾을 수 있었던 것은 정 무근 이름으로 어머니를 찾는다는 TV 사람 찾는 소식을 지인 한테 듣고 극적인 상봉을 하게 되었다고 한다. 김 진주씨는 90세 이신 자신의 생모와 함께 청주에서 살고 있고 아들을 참으로 사랑하는 모습을 그녀의 대화속에서 충분히 느낄 수 있었는데 한가지 답답한 것은 언어 문제로 완전한 소통을 못하는 것이 안타갑다고 했다. 이번 갈라에 김 진주 생모와 앤드류 친 동생 정 무영도 전기현 박사 부부가 초청하며 미국 양부모 깅스태드 부부도 초청할 것이다. 샬롯 지역에는 많은 미국인들이 중국

어린이들을 입양했고 또 협회까지 있어서 서로 친목도 하고 교류하며 연락하는 mailing list 가 있어서 이들을 10월3일 갈라에 다 초청하고 감사를 표할 것이다. 아시안 헤럴드와 오페라 캐롤라이나가 시작한 1회와 2회 갈라 컨서트는 Knight Theater 에서 1000명 이상 참석하여 미국 주류사회에 공헌했다. 올해는 CPCC Halton Theater 에서 공연하며 세계적인 오페라 성악가들 및 한국과 중국 시 낭송 및 고전 무용까지 다채로운 프로그램으로 훌륭한 저녁을 보내게 될 것이다. 전기현 박사 부부는 한국에 나가서 10월3일의 갈라 컨서트에 대해서 홍보 활동으로 서울 미래클리닉 예술관에서 매스 미디아 기자들과 인터뷰를 가졌는데 Chun University

학장이신 이영기 박사님이 연출하는 광복 70주년 기념 창작오페라 "김락" 의 홍보와 함께 인터뷰를 가졌다. 한국인터넷신문방송기자협회 전병길 회장, 뉴민주신문 뉴미디어코리아 대표 이창열님, 중부뉴스통신 편집국장 김만식 님, 월간 '무용과 오페라' 발행인 송종건 님외 17 명의 기자들과 인터뷰를 했고

"Love Gala" 와 앤드류 갱스태드 소개와 YouTube 를 통해서 그의 공연도 관람했다. 무용과 오페라 잡지는 이 인터뷰를 대대적으로 7 월호에 보도했고 20년전 샬롯 Duke Energy에 연수차 왔던 한전회사의 배기호씨는 Naver 에 전기현 박사를 치니까 송종건씨의 기사가 떠서 그분을 통해서 연락이 되어 너무 기쁘게 20여년만에 소식을 알게 되었다. 그리고 탈북자 피아니스트 김철웅씨도 이자리에 초대되어 피아노 연주도 하고 창작 오페라에 출연하는 3분의 짤막한 공연으로 참석한 기자들과 guest 들에게 " 김락" 선을 보였다.

샬롯 한인장로교회 담임: 나성균 목사 1. 어린이 성경학교 개교 금년에는 작년에 비해 훨씬 더 많은 어린이와 교사들이 정성을 다해 풍성하게 vbs를 인도 하였다. 7월 16 17 18 목금토 3일 동안 어린이 32명 교사 크루 리더 와 어시스턴트 모두 20명 가까이 담임 목사와 함께 곽 선신 전도사님의 인도를 받으며 땀 흘려 복음의 씨앗을 뿌렸다 전 교우 특별히 여전도회의 적극적인 후원으로 마지막 날에는 모어스빌에

있는 동물원으로 다함께 달려가 하나님의 창조와 축복과 섭리를 몸소 체험 했다 어린이 성경학교 동안 모든 비용을 교우들이 후원하여 풍성히 운영 하여 하나님께 감사를 드렸다 마지막날 선교 헌금을 하여 $535 전액을 물한모금 선교회 권 종승 선교사에게 보냈다 2. 중고등부 청년 대학 연합 수련회 샬롯장로교회 산하 Youth & Young Adult group 중 20명이 지난 7/2627에 걸쳐 1박 2일 동안 Wilmington 임마누엘교회에서(신동민 목사시무) EM Retreat을 가졌다.

26일 주일 오전 예배를 마치고 수련회 장소에 도착하여 감사기도를 드린 뒤, Youth 담당 최순종 인턴전도사를 중심으로 전동인 청년회장, 노태훈 청년이 준비한 저녁식사는 계속되는 수련회의 서막을 알리는 기가 막힌 팡파레와 같았다. 식사 후 드려진, 첫째 날 저녁 예배에서 정준승 EM 담당 부목사는 창세기 1장 27-28절의 말씀을 가지고 “What is Man?”이라는 제목의 설교를 전하며, 어지러운 시대를 살아가고 있는 젊은이들에게 사람을 이해하며, 바라보는 기준이 어때야 하는지를 여러 가지 activity를 통하여 실제적인 가르침을 전하였다. “하나님의 영광을 위하여 살아가는 인생, 사람의

함께 드리며 큰 은혜의 시간을가 졌다.

4. 8월 2일 차영창 목사 초청 전도 훈련 세미나 개최 예정

도시 전도 세미나의 대가 차영창 목사는 지난 5월 말 본 교회에서 완벽한 모델이신 예수님을 닮아가는 있었던 전도세미나 이후에 최근 10 젊은이들이 되며 아울러 성경적인 일간 다시 전도 훈련을 받고 돌아온 부부와 가정이 무엇인지”를 자세하게 후 첫 교회로 샬롯 장로 교회를 설교한 후, 전바울 청년의 인도로 방문하여 전도 훈련을 실시 하게 진행되어진 성령의 임재를 경험하는 된다 찬양시간과 젊은이들이 서로를 위하여 온 교우가 참여하여 전도에 총 진 눈물로 기도하는 뜨거운 기도의 시간 군 하도록 기도와 실천에 전력을 그리고 밤이 늦도록 진행 된 친교를 기울이려 하고 있다 통하여 20여년 만에 진행된 단독 5. 8월23일 창립 38주년 기념 Retreat의 기쁨을 누렸다. 예배 둘째 날은 Carolina Beach에 가서 금년에 하나님께서 교회를 여러 하나님이 창조하신 위대한 자연을 마음껏 누리는 시간을 가졌는데, Youth 모양으로 변화와 부흥시켜주시는 형편에 발 맞추어 더욱 박차를 회장을 맡은 이종훈 학생과 모두는 가하려고 전교인 1인 전도 작정과 하나님께서 함께 하심을 경험하는 실천을 계획하고 있다.■ 특별한 시간을 갖게 되었다. 물놀이 중 실수로 망망대해에 빠트린 안경을 포기하지 않고 기도하는 마음으로 서로가 찾았었는데, 결국 물놀이를 마치고 돌아가려던 찰나, 마치 아버지가 사랑하는 아이의 가슴에 선물을 안겨 주듯이, 어디선가 밀려온 파도에 의하여 다시 돌아온 안경이 종훈 학생의 가슴에 안기게 되었다. 놀라움을 넘어선 떨림의 시간이었다. 지난 2달간 열심히 VBS 위해서 애썼던 모든 청년과 학생들에게 주시는 하나님의 위로이자 우리와 항상 함께 하고 계심을 보여주신 사건이기도 하였다. 그 여운이 채 가시기도 전에 EM Retreat참석자 및 학부모를 위해 친히 저녁을 제공해 주신 전기현 장로의 섬김이 빠듯한 일정으로 인하여 피곤하였던 것을 씻어주었다. 정준승 목사는 “모든 것을 허락해 주신 하나님과 기도해 주시고 후원해 주신 교회와 모든 분들께 감사드리며, 계속해서 성장하며 생산하는 Youth & Young Adult group이 되도록” 기도 부탁을 요청하였다.

과학자로 칭송 받은 정재훈 박사와 아내 정정숙 권사가 매일 새벽4 시부터 새벽을 깨우는 기도를 통하여 하나님께서 지혜주심을 찬송하며 모든 영광을 하나님께 올려드리는 하나님을 사랑하는 귀한 분들입니다. 이 부부의 간증과 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 함께 3일을 지냈습니다. 또한 어려서부터 소아마비로 손가락질과 놀림 받고 살아오며, 설음 받은 만큼 홀어머니를 원망하며 좌절감으로 몇 번을 자살을 기도하던 소년이 주님을 만나 하나님을 찬양하는 오정민 목사의 ‘둘루스 경배와찬양’의 뜨거운 찬양으로 우리의 심령을 새롭게 하는 복된 시간들을 가졌습니다. 이화여대 졸업반이던 이지선양이 뜻하지 않은 자동차 사고로 얼굴과 온몸에 화상을 입고 처절한 자기싸움과 하나님을 만나 새 삶을 사는 이지선 자매의 간증을 통하여 장애자로 이 땅에서 사는 것이 힘들어 낙심과 좌절하며 몸부림치는 장애자들과 비장애자들 모두가 눈물을 훔치며 지선자매의 간증에 귀를 기울이는 우리에게 새 힘을 주는 시간이 되기에 충분하였습니다. 신선한 ‘한 여름 밤의 콘서트’와 ‘한소리 선교단’은 색다른 격조 있는 분위기를 연출하여 모두에게 기쁨을 주었습니다. 아동캠프는 김은예 전도사께서 은혜가 넘치는 말씀으로 또 아틀란타 Praise Team의 열정적인 찬양과 경배로 뜨거운 사랑의 캠프를 보냈습니다. 샬롯밀알은30일 남부교회에서 아틀란타밀알에서 대여한 버스에 합류하여 밤 11시30분에 출발 하였습니다. 13시간의 긴 여행을 하였지만, 아틀란타밀알 가족들과 친목을 다지는 귀한 시간을 보내고 7월 4일 오전 6시에 무사히 도착하였습니다. 샬롯밀알은 13명이 참여하였습니다. 거리가 멀고 장시간 이동하는 불편 때문에 많은 밀알단원들이 함께하지는 못하였지만, 밀알 Buddy들과 봉사자들이 너무나 열심으로 섬겨주어서 다른 지단들과 봉사자들이 감동을 받고 칭찬받는 등 모범을 보이고 왔습니다. 이들이 자랑스럽습니다. 올해도 신실한 사랑으로 ‘사랑의 수고와 헌신’ 을 보여준 캠프였습니다. 해마다 장애인들과 비장애인들이 모이는 ‘ 사랑의 캠프’는 오직 ‘섬김과 사랑’ 만 있습니다. 잘 다녀올 수 있도록 이를 위해 물질후원과 기도로 함께 해 주신 모든 분들께 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 사랑합니다. 샬롯밀알장애인선교단 김기영 목사 드립니다.
