KAC Welcomes New Year !

The Korean Association of Charlotte (KAC) celebrated the New Year’s Festival – the Year of the Red Monkey – on January 16th at the Charlotte Presbyterian Church auditorium. Because Koreans celebrate both the Gregorian Calendar New Year and the Lunar Calendar New Year, it has been the KAC tradition to have its New Year’s Festival in middle of January. Members of the Chinese American and Vietnamese American Communities (who will also have Lunar New Year’s Festivals) were among those in attendance at the KAC celebration. And about 450 Asian Americans joyfully celebrated and wished each other a Happy New Year together. Korean churches throughout the Charlotte area provided traditional homemade Korean food for the Festival and the young adult members of the Charlotte Presbyterian Church, which hosted the event, served attendees at the tables. It was very pleasant to see their big smiles and youthful energy as they brought people the delicious food to those sitting at the tables. After everyone had enjoyed the gourmet Korean dishes, the program for the Celebration of the New Year proceeded into three parts. Part one was the formal ceremony and the MC was Tae Hyung Chin who spoke in Korean with English translation by Grace Lee. The ceremony was opened by a call to order and invocation by Rev. Sup Sung Song who is the President of the Charlotte Church Association. Then the American national anthem was sung by Amy Kim, followed by the Korean anthem which was sung by Rev. Yu Chan Choi. The President of the KAC , Mr. Thung Hyun Chun, officially greeted the audience with a welcome address, and introduced the honorary guests. His address was followed by congratulatory remarks by Mr. Kee Boong Lee, President of the Southeastern Korean Federation from Atlanta, GA; Mr. Sung Chan, President of the Carolina Korean Association; Rev. Soo Hak Kim, President of the Charlotte Senior Association; and Mr. Ra, Chairman of the KAC Board. Appreciation and

recognition by the KAC was given to Mr. Kee Boong Lee, Mr. Yol Mun Sung, Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun, and Mr. Jae Hoon Shim who have provided their support to KAC throughout years. The next part of the Ceremony consisted of giving Scholarships and Awards in four different categories. The first category was for scholarships in athletic achievement. Two individuals who had already achieved gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA, Da Min Yu and Shin Bum Kim, received this scholarship. The second category was for academicmerit scholarships. The Scholarship Committee which included University of North Carolina (UNC) professors, awarded the scholarship to six students. They are Ye Jun Kim, Seungmin Park, Chris Song, Danny Choi, Hye Soo Song, and Insu Elliot Park. The third category was for need-based scholarships and recipients were Jonathan Chang, Jinseo Hong, Jin Sol Kim, Timothy No, and Ju Young Jeoung. The fourth category was the KAC President’s special recognition award which was given to Sunshine Chang and Grace Lee. This scholarship fund was provided by donations from Mr. Jae Woon Shim and Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun. The KAC also recognized math competition winners who were also given awards. Part one of the Celebration concluded by recognizing January 7th as Charlotte Koreans Day and a prayer by Rev. Sam Na. Part two of the Celebration was all about entertainment a traditional Taekwondo demonstration performed by Dragon Champion TKD Academy students and Head Master Kang Yu Lee. The KAC also invited two Chinese dancing groups “Little Lotus” & “Pacific Arts Troupe” to perform. Little Lotus performed “Tibetan Beauty” and the Pacific Arts Troupe performed “Jump and Dance”. Next, Ms. Yangon Ha performed a traditional Korean dance “All about Waiting”. And Mr. Yol Won Sung and Mr. Tae Hyun Chun played saxophone. Part two of the Celebration was all about entertainment and was filled with wonderful performances. Throughout

the evening, there were raffle drawings which marked periods of joyful screaming and excitement when the winners were announced that lifted everyone’s spirits. Part three was a singing competition, which 14 individuals had applied for in advance. The Grand Prize winner was Min Suh Kim who won a 55” LED TV. Those who won first through third place also received big prizes as well. Part four was a dancing competition and every body was invited to the stage to dance for a chance to receive a big prize. Audience members who watched had as much fun as those who were dancing on stage. The raffle drawing also continued. One category of drawings was the red ticket raffle where only KAC members who had paid their annual membership fee of $20 were entered. The prize was a state of the art kimchi refrigerator and the winner was a lucky girl, Myung Hwa Kim. And the final drawing was for the general raffle with a grand prize of two round trip tickets to Korea. One ticket was donated by DELTA Airlines and the lucky recipient was Meye Choi. The other ticket was donated by Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun, who has been donating for over 25 years. That lucky recipient was none other than Serom Chun. Everyone was amazed at the outcome of this drawing. Serom Chun is the KAC President Thung Hyun Chun’s daughter. She lives in Houston, Texas but was visiting her parents with her husband in order to celebrate her son’s 1 year old birthday. Her visit just happened to be during the New Year Celebration and was the first time she had been back home to visit in four years. She only purchased one raffle ticket and her uncle, Dr. Chun, drew her number! It was the last raffle drawing of the night and ended the evening with a big surprise to her parents and all the Chun family! In the end, many people enjoyed the bounty of prizes and plethora of entertainment and talent. Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s events and celebrating with their community to ring in the New Year! by Sunny Chun, Editor

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty five years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Sunny Chun -Editor

The Asian Herald and Chun Group staff would like to wish all of our readers A Happy New Year in 2016. Asian Communities throughout the world will celebrate the 2016 New Year by using the lunar calendar date of February 8th. Most western nations use the Gregorian calendar, which includes an extra day in February every 4 years. These years are

Following 2017, it will be in April 2020, which is a short month. The Lunar calendar is very complicated but it is very scientific with studies that follow the solar system and universe. Ancient Chinese scholars were men of knowledge of astronomy and philosophy. They established the lunar calendar cycle of 12 years with 12 animals that represent each year which are Rat, Ox, Tiger,

known as a Leap Year where February has 29 days instead of 28. This year, 2016, is one of those Leap Years. However, the lunar calendar works differently because lunar calendar dates go by the Moon while the Gregorian calendar dates go by the Sun. Lunar calendar months have 29 days in the short months and 30 days in the long months, while the Gregorian calendar months have 30 and 31 days. Also, the Lunar calendar adds one month to the year about every three years rather than one day like the Gregorian calendar does for February 29th. The Lunar calendar's extra month was in the year 2014 in September, which is a short month. The next year for the extra month will be in in 2017 in June, which is a long month.

Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each of these years it is represented by an animal and the reputed attributes. The year 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey, and it is very interesting when we look into the meaning of the Zodiac and "The Year of the Monkey". The Chinese Horoscope applies Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth) into the Chinese calendar. According to the Five Elements in the Chinese Horoscope, Monkey contains Metal and Water. Metal is connected to gold. Water is connected to wisdom and danger. Therefore, we will deal with more financial events in the year of the Monkey. Monkey is a smart, naughty, wily and vigilant animal. If you want to have a good return

for your money investment, then you need to outsmart the Monkey. Metal is also connected to the Wind. That implies the status of events will be changing very quickly. Think twice before you leap when making changes in your finances, career, and business and personal relationships. Lunar New Year celebration is for all Asian Communities and every year the Korean Association of Charlotte (KAC) welcomed both the Solar & Lunar New Years as South Koreans do. This year the tradition continued by having the New Year Celebration on January 16th in the auditorium of The Charlotte Presbyterian Church and this month Asian Herald front page has picture and articles featured how Charlotte Korean Americans celebrated New Year. The Charlotte Vietnamese Association will also have a New Year Celebration on January 30 from 5-9 pm at The Oasis Shriners. The Gala will include a Pageant, Lion Dance, cultural performances, singing & dancing, festival games, food & drinks and scholarship presentations. Please see the

Advertisement for this event on page 12. The Carmel Baptist Church will have a "Family Festival" on Lunar Calendar New Year’s Eve on February 7 at 1:30 pm 5:30 pm. There will be Chinese snacks, games and performances for all ages, and raffle draws to win gift certificate from Grand Asia Supermarket. The price of admission includes all activities and food. Please see the Advertisement for this event on page 13. The Chinese American Association of Charlotte (CAAOC) and CSSA at UNCC will proudly host the big Chinese New Year Gala on February 7th, 2016, also on Chinese New Year’s Eve. It is an important cultural night for Chinese to gather and celebrate. The event will start off with a spectacular show, riddles, raffle draws and kids games in the afternoon. Then have a delicious dinner, karaoke and dancing. Please see the Advertisement for this event on page 2. We encourage all of our readers to attend all of these special, funfilled cultural events to celebrate the New Year. The Asian Herald and Chun Group staff also wish all of our readers to have a prosperous year in this Year of the Monkey. ■

KIMNET’s New Challenge: Pray for America!

every Saturday in Charlotte, NC. Upcoming events include prayer tours to St. Louis, Kansas City, and Colorado Springs in February 2016. In October 2016, KIMNET’s I Pray for America team will be visiting KIMNET member churches Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York to have prayer rallies for America. Great awakening and revival start with repentance and prayer. God seeks each individual who prays. Through those who pray fervently,

Puritan-founded America is in its greatest moral and spiritual crisis. Since 9/11 in 2001, God has removed his hand of blessing and protection. America is in a war against terror and has attacked Alqaida’s headquarters in Afghanistan but lost many troops and money. This war is still unfinished business because of the expansion of war. America’s first president George Washington prayed at what Americans know today as “Ground Zero,” that God would not bless America if it turned from His ways. America has built a 541-meter high Babel tower, on November 3, 2014, and the new World Trade Center might represent how America boasts of her power. However, America is actually in tremendous debt and has lost leadership in the world. The United States is the world’s most debt-ridden country. Also, the U.S. proclaimed that it is no longer a Christian country; America is tearing down the biblical principles on which she was built. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court recently legalized homosexual marriage, ignoring God’s order of creation. Thirty-five Christian nations have legalized homosexual marriage to date. The Bible warns clearly that homosexual marriage is a sin and that this act will bring God’s

judgment. America has already chosen idolatry, greed, homosexuality, pornography, millions of abortions, and pride against God. America is at the tipping point of God’s judgment, and we are reaching the end of time. However, God is so gracious and merciful, and He waits for His people to repent and to turn back to Him. As we see America collapsing spiritually and morally, what shall we do? God has sent 2.5 million Koreans to live America, and there more than 4,000 Korean churches in the U.S. God is calling those who fear the Lord to pray for America. Obeying His calling, KIMNET will direct all its efforts to the I Pray for America movement. In May 5-7th, 2016, the National Day of Prayer and International Prayer Conference will be held at the Billy Graham Center in Charlotte, NC. In preparation for this conference, a prayer meeting is held each month. Also, a prayer meeting is specifically for America is held

God will bring revival and restoration to this land. The “I Pray for America” movement is a spiritual awakening movement to urge Americans to put on their spiritual armor and to prepare for Jesus’ coming. I strongly encourage you all to pray for America. ■ Rev.Ilsik Samuel Choe

"Unique Korean BBQ Restaurant" The Seoul Food Meat Company Husband and wife duo, Timothy Chun and Lisa Kamura, explore different horizons for 2016 with a new venture in the Seoul Food Meat Company. A restaurant developed from the cravings of the aforementioned duo, this eatery provides foods using meats found typically in American meat markets doused with Korean flavorings. The appeal is not to contend with the North Carolina BBQ scene, rather it's to create something new in the midst of a market that is already established. “For a lack of better words,” Timothy Chun states. “It's fusion. I grew up eating Korean food. I missed it when I went to college in Athens, GA. There weren't many options for it there. I got by using American cuts of meat and Korean flavorings in my own kitchen.”

rather it's variations of most things Southern, such as the pork and beef ribs – the Korean Fried Chicken is something to try with the Kimchi coleslaw. Lisa sets the expectations as such, “Since our food doesn't exist, these aren't any recipes for 'em. We plan to make good food with Asian flavors.” It's a place where you can acclimate yourself with a few of the permanent selections, and then find new favorites in the most-recent additions or daily specials. Pictures of the raised establishment, not yet finished, but nearly completed, reveals the rustic and hip ambiance of exposed lighting and copper pipes. There's a private room for personal affairs, outdoor patio for summer nights, and garage doors that open up the restaurant for a backyard appeal. The bar is fully

What you would expect from the menu are a few of the following: beef and pork ribs, crispy Miso pork belly, pulled pork, fire chicken, and salmon – choice cuts of meats with delicious side items that include ramen mac and cheese, Sriracha cracklin's, or Dirty white/ brown rice. The menu is open-ended. “We plan to have a set menu and add to it as we test out new foods,” Lisa Kamura says. This isn't your typical Korean BBQ place where you cook it in front of you,

stocked with what a thirsty patron would normally find in a city that is saturated with breweries, yet provides an added allure of serving craft Asian cocktails and beer. Located on 1400 S. Church St – Ste. A, at the corner of South Church and West Bland, Seoul Food Meat Company is close to the light rail. There is adequate parking, so drive on over, too. It seems comfortable enough for families, dates, and casual outings with friends. by David Choi

New Year Resolution-Encouragement By Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun

For the last 8 years, since February 2008 until the end of 2015, Hope Community Church has used the facilities of the Charlotte Presbyterian Church. Hope Community Church was founded by Pastors Mark Upton and Matt Guzi in April 2002. Hope Community Church was founded to reach the most unreached people group in the City of Charlotte – young, urban professional males between the ages of 21 and 38, 80% of these people have not been to a church in over a year. In 2007, Hope Community Church was using the YWCA but had outgrown the space. That is when the founders approached me as an Elder of Charlotte Presbyterian Church which was only a half mile away from the YWCA. On January 20th, 2008, we held the church building dedication and 30th year anniversary of the church’s founding. The new construction was a 33,000 square foot building and would make our church the largest Asian church between Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC. In order to help complete the building, I put everything I had into it. I sold my house and put my savings and retirement account into finishing the construction and paying the church mortgage. And most of all, I put my faith in God that he had a vision for the construction. And once the construction was complete, that is when Hope Community Church reached out to us stating their interest in leasing our building. After much deliberation, we decided to invite Hope Church to use our facility. However, rather than asking them to pay rent, we decided not to charge them. The only funds they would pay were for whatever utilities they used. The decision of Charlotte Presbyterian Church not to charge rent came from the long history of our church being the first Asian church in Charlotte. We were established on August 28th, 1977. And when we first began, we used the facility of an American church which did not charge us any rent to use its facility. I encouraged our congregation to remember this history. And our church agreed that we wanted to show the same generosity and kindness back and saw Hope Community Church as the perfect opportunity to do so.

In March of 2013, Hope Community Church established a second location near the Olde Providence neighborhood at Peace Moravian Church. The growth of Hope Community Church over the years is a testament to the dedication and hard work of its founding Pastors, Mark Upton and Matt Guzi, as well as those who joined to be leaders of the congregation, Ruling Elders Chris Osborn, Jason Tuttle, Eric Warren, Jeremy White, and Brad Grow along with additional Pastor, Matt Ham. Now, Hope Community Church has been blessed by God and it has purchased a new facility in Charlotte’s South End at 3021 Griffith Street near the New Bern light rail station. Upon Hope Community Church’s departure from our church’s facility, they gave us a plague to show their appreciation. The plague states the

to give others encouragement with the hope that my encouragement will help them become successful in whatever endeavor they choose to pursue. Hope Community Church also donated their entire “state of the art” audio/ visual sound system. And although we will miss them very much, we are happy that our church facility continues to be used by a Montagnard church, an Ethiopian Church and a West African church for the last 2 to 3 years. And with the kind words of Hope Community Church, we are motivated to continue to share what we have and to encourage each other. This cycle of encouraging others who in turn encourage you reminds me of a college classmate of mine. When I was attending Korea University, one of my classmates lost the will to live. His father had passed away when he

following: Let it be known in the Kingdom of God and the City of Charlotte that Hope Community Church is eternally grateful for the generosity of Charlotte Presbyterian Church. Because of your willingness to share your facility with us for eight years the Good News of the Gospel has gone forth throughout the City and around the World. May God Grant you many more years of faithful service to God’s people for His glory until such time as we are reunited again in His presence. When we were presented with this plague, I felt an overwhelming sense of encouragement with their words of appreciation. With our church’s act of generosity, we encouraged them. However, with their subsequent success and deep appreciation, they encouraged us just as much. Which brings me to my New Year’s Resolution this year. This year, I want

was 4 years old and his mother had sacrificed everything to raise him so that he was able to attend Korea University, which is one of the ivy league universities in Korea and where tuition is very expensive. Nevertheless, with all of the sacrifices of his mother, he did very well in school and was able to attend such a university. One day during his sophomore year, he fell asleep while studying. His mother was still at work finishing her janitorial work. He had fallen asleep while studying by a gas lantern. Somehow, the gas lantern had caused a fire in the house. When his mother came home, she saw that the house was on fire and immediately took action to save her sleeping son. She successfully saved him but in her efforts, she was badly burned, her lungs were badly damaged, and she ended up passing away from her injuries. After his mother’s death, in his despair,

he refused to allow anyone to take his mother’s body to be buried in a proper funeral. When I heard this, I went to his house to see him. When I saw him, he had shaven his head bald and had a crazy look in his eyes. I went over to him and told him to get up and pull himself together, but he would not listen to me. So I decided I had to do something drastic to get his attention. I knew that if he stayed there like that, he would end up dying himself. That is when I decided to shave my own head and go back over to his house. I went back to his house and sat next to him. I was afraid to sit next to his mother’s body so I sat on the other side, waiting for him to notice me. When he finally looked over at me, he asked me why I had shaved my head. I told him that I was going to sit there with him and I wasn’t going to leave until he decided to get up. I slept the night next to him and I think that convinced him that I was not going to leave. The next day, he finally came to his senses and allowed his mother’s body to be taken for funeral preparations. Today, he is a prominent lawyer in Korea and president of a nonprofit organization that assists single mothers in Korea. I encouraged him that day but ever since, his life and commitment to others encourages me. In California, a principal who learned that one of his students had cancer, challenged the students of his school to raise $3,000 for their classmate’s cancer treatment. To give them some incentive, the principal said he would shave his head in front of the entire school if they reached their target amount. The school not only raised the target amount, they raised $2,000 over for a total of $5,000. And as promised, the principal shaved his head at the morning assembly. Not only did the principal shave his head, other classmates shaved their heads to support and show solidarity with their friend. So this New Year, it is my resolution to show others encouragement and I hope others will do the same. When we see someone who needs encouragement or support, let’s help them. Let’s have the mentality that time is of the essence. When someone needs help, let’s support them without any reservation or hesitation. Let us not judge those who need help as being lazy or somehow undeserving of our support. Like the act of shaving your head bald, it won’t cost you anything, but it can save a person’s life. Even small things make a difference by showing another person that you support them, that you are with them in solidarity. Have A Happy New Year!

Breaking down the wall of excuses, lays one brick written as appreciation. During the early years of my childhood, I had always wanted to be “white” because I didn’t appreciate who I was enough. It wasn’t until middle school that I had realized its value. It began with meeting Uyen. She was like a dancing flame: scorching and attractive, but always warm. She was the first to make me feel proud to be an Asian American. Through her I had realized that by being a different race other than the majority made me special. I was important to the world. As time passed, more stitches were made and my understanding of who I was

For our Social Studies’ finals, we were assigned an immigration project. I chose to show the journey of Hmong people. It was the easiest to achieve because I had personally been affected. Ironically, I would do a bulk of research when my interest burned blue. Through my project, I had learned the sacrifices my family, had made to reach America. I am currently 16, the same age group as my two grandfathers when they entered the secret war. They had been recruited by the CIA to help with the growing communism in Southeast Asia. However, they were blinded by the propaganda of protecting their families against the red Vietnamese rather than the true motive of the secret war. They had been walking in the dark. Vividly the memories of their storytelling came back to me as if I never left that space in time. Past the glass, the world had been tucked in by a dark velvet sky. Night had fallen and a single lamp lit the room. My maternal grandfather was sitting on the floor starting his story. “The nights were cold in the jungle and hard to sleep for fear of the red Vietnamese. Being a soldier was terrible, but I had joined so I could protect my family. I was 16.” Befitting his want to protect his family, my grandfather was trained to be a medic. Dusk had begun to settle, when my paternal grandfather had called my mother for a fix to his Thai movies addiction. When the movie introduction began to roll, we settled into conversation and he told his tale. “I was 15 when I first got drafted into the secret war and I didn’t want to go. Soon after we lost the war, I had to cross the Mekong River to get into Thailand. It was just a couple days after

your dad was born. He had been dipped into the water because we were running away from the red Vietnamese.” Now, it made sense why my dad always blasts his music and covers his ears in the pool. My two grandfathers finished their differing stories with one conclusion: “I am happy because I was in the CIA; we are here, in a peaceful land.” As a Hmong soldier in the secret war, one’s family was given priority over those families without a soldier in their household during the immigration process. Both sides of my families were given a choice between America and France. Although my paternal family was ensured to go to America, my maternal family had been assigned to France. The transition seemed seamless and perfect, but fate would not have as so. Their papers were transferred so they would

a journey of enlightenment. One of the most revered story cloths is the journey of Hmong people’s from China to Southeast Asia and lastly to the western countries. It portrays the struggles Hmong people have faced to become who they are today. Compared to when I first met Uyen, the story cloth is nearly done. In the midst of November, the Hmong New Year had arrived. Past the winding road and river, the tops of booths and sport courts can be seen; the festival grounds had come into view. Hmong people gather here every year to welcome the beginning of a New Year. The rising cooking smoke blowing into the crisp air, chiming bells and fresh cloths will always take me back to my roots. I realized that Hmong people have no land, but the hordes of people coming together for jubilee will always be enough for me. This was the end of my tedious and beloved story cloth. When one story cloth is done, another begins. Needles, fabric and bright threads sit in her basket waiting to be used. A Hmong woman’s work is never done until the sun sets. ▄

Jan. / Feb. 2016 (10) The Blu Phenomenon, Highlights International Adoption in the U.S.A.

The year 2014 closed with discussions around the globe regarding changes on the international adoption scene. For example, China recently extended its one-child rule to two, which is expected to impact the number of children available for adoption from China. And China is only one of a number of countries that are reexamining their guidelines for sending children to homes overseas.

A fresh perspective on the topic has emerged this month in the form of a young adult novel called The Blu Phenomenon, written by Catherine Pike Plough, a Charlotte author and the adoptive mother of a Chinese son. Early reviews and impressive endorsements for the book suggest Plough’s macro-view of the adoption movement over decades is inspiring a different discussion: How international adoptees just may be a latent power for political change abroad. The Blu Phenomenon released last week to all major book distributors. “My goal is to give those touched by adoption a familiar place where they can embrace their journey,” says Plough of her first novel, adding, “and to deliver that experience in a plausible, suspense-filled story with young adult appeal.” The main character of the book is a thirteenyear-old Chinese adoptee, living in California, with extraordinary athlete abilities and unexplained blue eyes. his journey to the Olympic Games, he is nicknamed Blu. When Plough talks about “those touched by adoption,” she says that includes most everyone. “Adoption, particularly international adoption (IA), has changed the landscape of the U.S.,” states Plough. “The unique opportunities and challenges of this phenomenon have impacted families, communities, churches, schools, and our health care industry.” The Blu Phenomenon, she says, is a “what if” thriller that acknowledges the impact of IA, and poses the idea that Chinese adoptees—together with university students from China—just might hold the power to push for change in their Communist homeland. The book has received endorsement from Harry Wu, a foremost human rights activist for China. Catherine Pike Plough is a veteran writer for local, regional and national publications.

The Church’s News
