Korean New Year Celebrate 2013 샬롯 한인 신년 잔치

热烈庆祝2013韩国新年 “Sae-hae-bohk mahnee bah-duh-sae-yo” ..The Korean New Year was celebrated by the community of Charlotte on January 5, 2013 at Halton Theatre, Downtown CPCC. The Year of the Snake celebration, organized by the Korean Association of Charlotte, started at 5 pm with delicious traditional dinner. Kimchi is a standard for any Korean meal, as is an array of banchan (side dishes), such as seasoned soybean sprouts. “The best part of Soll for me was sneaking into the kitchen while the mothers were occupied and peering into the huge pot of rice cake soup (dduk gook) boiling over the fire,” Lee writes in her cookbook, Eating Korean. Dduk Gook is by far the most important food eaten for Soll. Made from pulverized rice, the cakes have a texture like a giant noodle and for Soll are always round, a shape that represents the sun.” This year menu had an abundance of dishes, from potato noodles, beef briskets to salads, finishing with a traditional sweet orange. Participants had a chance to see old friends, reacquaint wit long- time friends or simply made new one. It was a time for reminisce and reconnections. Animated people filled the gorgeous and spacious theater, restless waiting for the festivity to start at 7pm. The program had three parts. This year moderators were husband and wife team, Moses Sye and Maija Sye. Pastor Hyung Woo Park, from the Korean Hope Church of Charlotte offered the Opening Prayer. The Invocation was presented by Pastor Dong Wook Kim, President of NC Korean Churches Association. The Korean Anthem and American National Anthem was sung by Soo Jin Ridgell accompanied by pianist Robert Ridgell. H. S. Pang, President of the Charlotte Korean Association welcomed all participants, members of the community and their guests. The Honorary Guests were introduced by Mr. Pang. The evening continued with Mr. Heong

Soo Kim, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, expressing congratulations to the community. Jin Chul Yoo, President of Federation of Korean Associations (Southeast), addressed the encouragements for the year to come. The New Year’s Address was introduced by Byung Joon Pak, President of Federation of Korean Associations, Southeast; it was followed by a well disserved recognition award ceremony, announced by Mr Pang, President of the Charlotte Korean Association. A special Ceremony was held for the Proclamation of January 7, 2013 as Charlotte KoreanAmerican Day. Messages were presented by LaWana Mayfield( City Council) and Major Rodney Collins ( Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Dept). These also concluded first part of the celebration. The second part of the event was introduced by the moderators, Moses and Maija Sye; It begun with a speech Ho Keun Jung, President of Federation of Korean Associations, Carolina. The first performance on the program by Charlotte Samulnori Club, and included drums and a dance by a performer wearing a hat with long narrow paper attached to it, which constantly swung in a sinuous way. The drum-play and Jaban turning were outstanding. The music continued with Charlotte Korean Senior’s Chorus. Elegant Korean traditional costumes delighted the eyes while words of familiar songs encourage the audience to sing. Another great performance followed; Young Ae Ma delighted the audience with her voice, music and skills.

Presenter Seung Chun decided is time for a little movement in the audience; so he opened the raffle drawing. Excited people, kids and adults, hurry through the alleys with precious prizes, and smiles from ear to ear. Little Lotus Troupe brought to stage beautiful, adorable young ladies dressed in vibrant red outfits; they enchant the audience infusing magic and happiness with their dance. The Troupe, led by Ms. XiaoSong Hèr, has been in much demand in Charlotte and surrounding areas since they made their debut in the fall of 2004, with Chinese dances performed in authentic costumes. The Troupe is comprised of two groups: one is known as the “Mei Mei Class” (Mei Mei means younger sister in Chinese), and the other is referred to as the “Jie Jie Class” (Jie Jie means older sister in Chinese). Few minutes later it was time to recharge and enjoy another hart- racing performance of a traditional Taichi & Sword Show, brought to stage by Legendary Arts & Culture Group, lead by Ms. Rieca Yao. The performances continued with the music of Korean Classic Pop- Saxophone Club. Another upbeat performance of Traditional Taekwondo demonstration was presented by Dragon Champion TDK Academy. More ruffle tickets were drawn and lucky people rushed to take possession of their prizes. As always, part of the stage was filled with rice bags, sweets, and other precious gifts. Among them triumphed a 42” HD Flat TV and a Tablet, surrounded by valuable little things like Visa Gifts Cards loaded with $ 200.00. All were given during small pauses between the performances, during the entire show. Thus part three, marking the last of the night, was engulfed in excitement over a singing contest and the precious prizes of food, household items and of course, the Continue to page 11

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business actiAvities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

Time remains secured in our domain. It is the law of nature and we cannot deny it. Beautiful moments seem to pass too quickly as we just watch them vanish right in front of our eyes. And those moments do not repeat themselves ever, or do they? Pictures can depict the smile that you had years ago, but it won’t bring back the very memories—true excitement, mere happiness or even love. As we search for the return of those precious memories, the law of nature fails, sometimes, for your own benefit. Love has no borders. You meet someone. And you know very little about that someone but it feels familiar as if you have experienced this very moment before. Maybe because of that little speech she made or even the way you reacted to it. And only for that split second, you truly remember the long lost feeling of yours. This is their story: Danielle Choi was born in South Korea on

Roxanna,

March 9th, 1981. Thousand miles away, Vicenzo Antignani is born in Southern Italy on March 11th, same year. At her age 15, Danielle moves to US and later pursues her PhD in Blacksburg, VA and there she meets Vincenzo. There they meet for the first time, though they don’t really talk to each other. But on a special occasion, Vincenzo becomes more serious about Jesus and the two get to know each other more and more, going to bible study and church together. On January 5th, 2013, those lovely two stood against each other, face to face, and proclaimed their love—the sanctity of marriage—amongst numerous friends and families. The pastor reminded them, “God renews us,” he continues, “and only as we continue to be renewed in God’s grace and His power, we will have peace and genuine joy in Christ. I invite you, all of you, to share this great news and you shall have no less, but everything.” ■

One 7 School

One7 Academy marked the completion of the fourth year, meeting in Dr. Chun's Asian Library. One7 Academy had the privilege of adding three new students this year. Gyslen, Soli and Huyien all started their first year with One7's private school this fall. Our school continues to grow with international flavor as the new students bring cultural diversity from Eritrea, Congo, and Vietnam. H'su, Kiet, Tri, Bria, Lizeth, Ana, and Jennifer are returning from last years class. We are blessed to have such a diverse group of students, which includes two African, five Asian, two Hispanic, and one African American. A true picture of the unity, in race and culture, that makes our world so beautiful. Doctor Chun has graciously and faithfully invited our Academy back each year, playing a vital role in the education of these students. The support of Dr. Chun has been instrumental in One7 providing a top notch education to these amazingly gifted students. One7 is so grateful for the investment, and partnership the Chun group has provided to our girls. The One7 Ministry which birthed the Academy and was created by David and Mary Catherine Garrett six years ago responds to the needs of Charlotte's increasing number of refugees and immigrants. This faith-based ministry, located near Eastway and Shamrock Dr. reaches out to young children and teens through a weekly activities, soccer teams, after school tutoring and unconditional love. Practical assis-

tance such as food, clothing, furniture , and the support necessary when adapting to a new home and country, is extended to the families. The ministry complex, a haven of acceptance and friendship in the midst of a harsh, confusing environment, welcomes and embraces people of any nationality and nurtures brotherhood and fellowship through Bible study, worship, service, and fun. "Loves is an action," the watchword of the ministry, playing out in every aspect. A natural extension of the ministry, the school serves children struggling with language acquisition in addition to academics. Field tips this year to the Charlotte Symphony, Children's Theater, Harvey Gantt Center, Reed Gold mine, Billy Graham Library, and the Greek Festival enhanced the students knowledge base and experience while service to crisis Assistance and Brian Center Rehabilitation and Nursing center along with several other community service projects provided the girls plenty of opportunities to serve. Instruction is geared to individual levels and paces., Encouraging each student to achieve personal goals at an appropriate rate. With this philosophy, the student's significant progress measured to date attests to the value of a low student/teacher ratio and a positive, loving , and encouraging environment. Over the past few years One7 has been fundraising in order to build a home for the One7 Academy. In 2011 One7 was able to purchase 4.5 acres of land on Eastway drive for the future development of our school and outreach center. We are excited to see God provide for our permanent site, as construction on our school starts January of 2013. This new Academy that will

What Is T4T Among Immigrants & Refugees? Christ For All Peoples is offering special training sessions. Learn how T4T (Training for Trainers), an Asian born outreach to a new people group in love, evangelism, discipleship, home group, church planting, leader development process, has been successfully adapted in America. It is a process that often starts with outreaches of gifts and acts of kindness, and maybe the well known Jesus Film DVDs that has won so many overseas. This is targeted to reach immigrants, 1. How do I enter a new field (of people)? How do I reach out in love (gifts, acts of kindness) 4. How do you gather them into disciple making groups / churches How do you develop and multiply leaders? refugees, and those in need, mostly in our apartments. The original Chinese T4T movement grew to 2 million baptisms in under 10 years planting around 80,000 churches. This particular approach now is operating in multiple millions in India, South Asia, Africa, Mideast, and other places. It has been documented by missions research and is proven to have the capacity to work in cultures of all the major religions, languages, and unreached people groups. You get an overview of T4T at www.T4T.online.org. One Charlotte area Korean pastor who just got back from a missions trip to India was very excited when T4T was mentioned because he had just seen 100 house churches planted in only 10 days by participating in a movement by T4T train-

er Kahgn Hee. The person who trained Kahgn Hee, Jeff Sundell, is now working to train in the Charlotte area along with those he already has trained to reach internationals and those in need, especially in apartment complexes. Churches are also encouraged to adapt them as mission target areas. On January 8 or 10 will start training opportunities in the Charlotte area that will run for several months by a successful T4T practitioner Jeff Sundell who was 2.Fishing: Who do I share with? Jeff Sundell was a Southern Baptist missionary in South Asia for 10 years. Jeff, through his group of people trained, was responsible for planting many churches in Nepal, India, and South Asia. Since he has returned home three years ago the number of these churches more than doubled (over 10,000). Several leaders with their own movements came out of this with even more multi-generational churches. Since his return Jeff has been training leaders in over 20 US cities to reach America's tens of millions of immigrants and refugees. He is especially interested in unreached people groups who somehow have their people here in America. â–

Rosary Prayer Group Meets at the Joaquins

by Dr Nini Bautista

The Holy Infant Jesus ( Santo Nino) and Lady of Guadalupe Rosary Group held its last meeting of the year on December 8, 2012 ( Feast of the Immaculate Conception) at the founder's home, of Mr. & Mrs. Rudy & Lita Joaquin. The Infant Jesus or Santo Nino de Cebu is the oldest Catholic religious relic venerated in the Philippines,as it was given in 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan (a Portuguese explorer/discovererof the Philippines, under the employ of the King Charles V of Spain) to Humamay, principal wife of Rajah Humabon, Chieftain of Cebu upon their conversion. It even antedates the Infant Jesus of Prague( Czech Republic) venerated by pilgrims all over the world, given by St. Teresa de Jesus of Avila to a Spanish noblewoman, who gave it as a wedding present to her daughter in Bohemia and given to the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in 1628 at the Church of the Our Lady of Victory on Mala Strana.Prague. The Virgen of Guadalupe, or Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe is the Patroness of Mexico. On Dec. 9 & 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to an Aztec convert, Juan Diego, and asked him to build a shrine in her honor. The Bishop demanded more proof and Juan Diego came back with roses given by Our Lady, hidden in his cloak, where also the image of The Virgin of Guadalupe was imprinted. Thus

the Basilica was built in Tepeyac outside of Mexico City, a popular pilgrimage shrine of the faithful not only of Mexico but of all Catholics world wide. In 1935, Pope Pius XI approved the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe over the Philippines. It was only in relatively recent times, on January 22, 1999 that Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Virgin of Guadalupe as the Patroness of the Americas. The prayer group is composed mostly of retirees from New York, New Jersey, Washington, who have come to make Charlotte/Waxhaw their home: Oscar & Carmelita Banting, Lilia & Roger Ramos, Florie & June Flores, Mickey & Marcelo Bueno, Igna & Ludy Anguilo, T. Altiveros plus the Charlotteans Doris & Boging Mata, Linda Judson, Miloy & Jaime Sison, Don & Mercy Mangana, Manny & Jovette Sabenicio. After the rosary prayers and the sumptuous dinner prepared by Lita,( who is also the 2012 FACC President) shared with guests: Don & Nellie Ocampo,Joe & Susan Aquino, James & Mae Armstead, Dell Amor, Dr. Nini, they enjoyed some camaraderie and fun with the exchange of funny gag gifts. They also practiced singing the Christmas carols for their performance, organized by Linda Judson, the following day at a Nursing Home in South Charlotte, to bring some holiday cheer to the resi-

2012 was a blessed year for the Lee family

By Lena Chun Lee.J.D.

My father asked me to share our good news of our new addition to our family, Alyssa Mi Sook Lee was born on December 19th, 2012 at 6:25 pm weighing 7 pounds .2 ounces & was 19 1/2 inches long. My parents flew in from Charlotte, NC and my sister came in with her family from Chicago to be with our family when Alyssa was born and to spend Christmas together in NJ. My brother already works in NYC so it was a short trip for him to be with us at the hospital in Hackensack. My father in law & mother in law also drove up to see Alyssa while we were in the hospital. I feel so very grateful to have such wonderful family. My mother and sister helped out so much while I was in the hospital & stayed for almost 2 weeks. My mother cooked multiple meals for the family everyday & kept us all nourished and made me a lot of meyukgook which is a seaweed broth that Koreans serve to renourish women after childbirth. We are so incredibly blessed to have her as well as our first daughter Elyse "Ellie" Hyunsook Lee. I wanted to share our difficulty in getting pregnant the first time & to share how blessed we are to now have 2 little girls in our lives. God is so good! After getting married in 2005, my husband Danny & I decided to wait a year before having children. We wanted to travel and take time as newlyweds before starting a family. We traveled extensively during this year & started to try to get pregnant soon after our 1 year anniversary. After 5 months of no news, we decided to make sure there were no issues. After getting thoroughly checked out, we continued to try for another year... still no news. Then we went to fertility doctor after fertility doctor to try to get help. It was at that time that they classified us as "unexplained infertility". Two doctors then recommended that I get a myomectomy,

which is surgery to remove fibroids. I had a large fibroid which they did not feel was impeding the ability to get pregnant but it was blocking the view of one of my ovaries so that monitoring me during fertility treatment would be difficult on one side. I had a myomectomy done in late 2008, we then tried to get pregnant naturally for a few more months & then got more aggressive with treatment. We went through 4 treatments of IUI all of which were unsuccessful and then finally 1 treatment of

pregnant began to fade & then a peace came over me that I hadn't felt in several years. Several weeks later, I went into my doctor's office to get checked out since I was bleeding irregularly. I thought I was having issues after all the hormone treatments of IVF that I had just gone through. It was at this time that they did a blood test & the doctor's office called to tell me that I was pregnant! I did not believe them when they called to tell me the news. After try-

most beautiful little girl. I was 38 when Ellie was born. My husband asked me to stay home to take care of Ellie and wanted to try to have another baby. It was hard for me to stay at home since I always envisioned myself working and having a career, I was an in-house attorney. Also, to be quite honest, working is much easier than taking care of a child. I had and continue to have so much respect for women who choose to stay at home with their children. When Ellie was 18 months old, my husband & I started to try for another child and to our amazement, we got pregnant naturally very quickly. I am now 40 & just had our 2nd baby girl. It amazes me how God has worked in our lives and has blessed us mightily. Alyssa is a wonderful, beautiful, healthy baby girl and Ellie has been adapting quite well to her little sister. Whenever we go out Ellie tells everyone, "I'm a big sister now" and gives her little sister hugs & kisses. Hopefully this continues to last though it's only been 2 1/2 weeks. I wanted to share our story of infertility to give hope to others who are struggling. Since many are getting married later infertility seems to be a common problem. I myself personally know over 25 couples that have had issues with pregnancy. All of them now have children. For some it just took an extra year or 2 but there is 1 couple that took 10 years to finally have a child but all of them are now parents of beautiful children. God is faithful and we just need to trust in His good timing and in His will ■

IVF which was also unsuccessful. Thank ing for so hard for so long we got pregnant goodness most of these treatments were naturally just 2 weeks after our failed IVF covered by my husband's insurance com- attempt. Praise the Lord! pany. We had been trying to get pregnant It was after all of this that I realized once for 3 1/2 years when the IVF was unsuc- again that no matter what, I needed to wait cessful. Month after month I was crying on God's timing. He gave us a beautiful each time my period would come and I be- and healthy baby girl, Elyse who is now 2 gan to feel exhausted from disappointment years old. She is smart as a whip and the and from all the doctor appointments, getting poked & proded and from the treatments themselves which are physically taxing on the body.   It was at this time that my husband told Balikbayan Box Shipping Company  me that I should not worry or be upset if BoxForward Forward Shipping Company   A ABalikbayan Serving GA, NC, SC, TN, VA Serving GA, NC, SC, TN, VA we are unable to have a child. Walk Fast and Firm

When I was young, most of my class mates had a life goal. When we were asked by the teacher, the students would say they wanted to be a teacher, a scientist, a general, or a lawyer. But nowadays, young people don’t seem to have any goal, even though they are sophomores or seniors in college. I believe the reason is because they did not read and were never inspired by literature. Those who have a goal differ from those who do not in two ways. The first way is in the manner they walk. Those without a goal walk slow and aimlessly while those with a goal walk fast, firm and with purpose. The second way they differ is in their eyes, particularly in their pupils. Those with no goal lack focus looking here and there and are easily distracted while those with a goal look ahead with precision and determination. These differences occur because those without any goal have no direction to guide them in life. However, when it comes to goals, it is never too late because age does not matter. If you live a life set by goals, your journey begins anew with each new goal no matter how old you are. The mayfly is known to live only one day. If that fly is born on a rainy day, it will never fly. An ant that lives on the back of an elephant will never know the difference between the ground and the elephant’s back. We only know what we experience and our experiences differ even though we may live during the same period and place. Therefore, the human intellect is limited by time and space. One person can experience only so many things in his or her lifetime. However, by reading literature, one can benefit from the life experiences and insights of many different people who have lived through many different experiences, thereby overcoming the limitations of one life time. Reading great literature connects us to other worlds and is the key to unlocking the mysteries and lessons of those worlds. In today’s information age with com-

puters and the internet, we have access to whatever facts on whatever topic we can think of. Although the internet might provide data, it does not nurture your intellectual capability the way that reading literature will do. Information and facts do not provide any deep insights into the human condition. Those who read often when they are young provide nutrition to their intellect to last a lifetime. Works of great litera-

ture provide a young mind with nutrients that will carry from the root to the vines that will flower into fruit to enrich them for a lifetime. When we think of the greatest scientist of the last century, Einstein is the first person who comes to mind. However, when he was young, his school teachers were ready to give up on him because he could not focus and was a scatterbrained problem child. However, when his parents directed him toward reading, his inner genius developed and he became the father of the Theory of Relativity. When we think of the most influential person in recent history, Bill Gates is among the most notable figure that comes to mind. Bill Gates has said that the small neighborhood library is what made him the man he is today. When he was young, he would read for at least one hour of everyday, two to three hours a day on weekends even on busy

By Dr.Ki Hyun Chun days. He has said that the one hour he spent reading when he was young was more important to him than any hour he spends now because it formed him into the person he is today. That hour of reading when he was young was an investment in his future that paid off exponentially. Books contain boundless treasures and are the best fertilizer for life. In this fast-paced world, things are changing

all the time and we are forced to adapt to such change. However, great works of literature contain universal truths about humanity that will always remain constant and enrich the soil of life that will lead to a bountiful harvest. Great literature can inspire you, can instill a sense of passion, love and compassion within you. And with love and compassion for life, you will experience color, sound, smells, shapes and all the senses in life with more vibrancy, see their

beauty and it will in turn strengthen your passion for life even further. It is within this context that people should determine their goals in life. The decision of what goal to achieve should be informed by love and compassion, which will in turn lead to a more abundant life full of joy. Such a decision should not be done lightly. A strong will is required to set and achieve any goal worth pursuing. When I was young, I was inspired by the story of the life cycle of an eagle. The story goes that by the time an eagle reaches its 40th year, its long talons are no longer flexible and it can no longer grab prey. Its long and sharp beak becomes bent so that it can no longer eat, and it’s thick feathers make it difficult to fly. The eagle is left with a choice to undergo a painful transformation that will last 150 days or to die. The transformation requires the eagle to fly to the top of a mountain where it will break its beak and talons off until new ones grow. When the new talons grow, it then plucks out the old feathers until new, lighter feathers appear. After such transformation, the eagle can live another 30 more years. Although I have since learned this story of the eagle is a myth, it still provides a poignant illustration of the kind of will required in setting and achieving a worthwhile goal. In this New Year of 2013, I encourage my readers to make a New Year’s Resolution to read one book of literature per month in order to finish at least 12 books per year. I know it will be hard to finish the first three books, but after three books, the rest can be done more easily. This is my New Year’s Resolution. Let’s read, be inspired, and walk fast and firm as only those with a goal do. ■

, Happiness and Enduring Friendships Happy New Year!... And to all, thank you for your encouragements and support in 2012 End note: my favorite quotes for this season Encouragement “There are high spots in all of our lives and most of them have come about through encouragement from someone else. I don't care how great, how famous or successful a man or woman may be, each hungers for applause.” George Adams “Christmas! 'Tis the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial fire of charity in the heart.” Washington Irving Gratitude “Gratitude is when memory is stored in the that no one from the party had more fun and heart and not in the mind.” Lionel Hampton took so many pictures than me. Due to limited “Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an anspace, and being “to cute to publish” some will tiseptic” John Henry not make the cut. However, below I will share some, with my wishes to all for a Healthy, Prosperous and Happy New Year. At the edge of the New Year, I am wishing you a gentle journey through this sacred time, graced by the gifts of peace, love and joy. May your days be a journey of blessings and good fellowship for you and those you love. May your house be blessed, and all who enter there. May there come to you at this time an abundance of the precious things of life: Health Charity “Certainly it is a heaven upon earth, to have a man's mind to move in charity, rest in providence, and turn upon the poles of truth.”Francis Bacon Grateful, Roxanna ■

这一回,洪昭光教授聊了新话 题,也把老话题讲出了新意。 他谈饮食:这个季节经常有人问我吃 什么好, 其实有什么菜就吃什么菜, 别吃反季节蔬菜就行; 他谈锻炼:本来走路是一种很简 单的锻炼方式,结果有人弄出 15 种走 路方法,搞得太复杂了;
