Atypical of the millenials who invariably feel so entitled & who do not want to wait, opting for instant gratification," now", most MAC participants are imbued with a strong social conscience, and are volunteering all over the world. Amy Watanabe went on a mission to Costa Rica helping the poor at the grass root level. Some volunteered "hands on" in projects for Habitat for Humanity, here and abroad. You will see them volunteering in hospitals, blood donation centers, mentoring in after school programs, food drives to fight hunger, in homeless shelters, The fairest, the brightest, & talented Asian Americans it seems also have big caring hearts...such strong role models for the next generation. We hope that the friendships made during their MAC

experience while learning more about their culture and their "authentic self" will enrich the lives of the participants, as they rekindle their love for their Asian cultural heritage and embrace the Asian part of their being.. We thank our sponsors Dr. Ki-Hyun & Dr. Sunny Chun, and the Asian Chamber for the scholarship cash awards, for underwriting the cost of the multicultural showcase. Thanks as well to the community organizations which sponsored the participants. Our sincere appreciation goes to the two panel of judges, to Ms Patricia Martinez, President & CEO of Leadership in the Clouds, and all the volunteers who made it all possible, i.e, MAC Team = Malaya Abed, Aurea & Raymond Barbee, Dr.Malette Oliveros, Xiaosong He, Florami Lee, David Mager ( music), Phin Xaypangna (coordinator consultant), the MAC escorts. 2nd Music Competition at Chun University

Saturday, May 30, 2015 was a grand day for Chun University as 26 students competed for scholarships in Church Music degrees. These students came from four states including North and South Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Displaying their talent in voice, contemporary Christian music, piano and orchestral instruments, these exceptional young people brought the audience to their feet. The day began with an opening ceremony, highlighting the launching of Chun University

in 2016 as a college dedicated to Church Music and Christian Education for the glory of God and the work of the Kingdom. Following the invocation by Rev. Brian Weer, our President and Founder Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun opened the ceremony with a welcome address. Dr. Chun spoke heartily about the vision and mission of the university, encouraging the competitors in their talents and future college experience. Professor of Chopin University, Dr. Andrej Dutkiewicz, gave a

stirring address to the students, reminding them that their talents were true gifts given to encourage and beautify the world. Following the competition, lunch was held in the dining hall. The judges were then sequestered to discuss the morning’s scoring and process. Our panel of judges included head judge, Dr. Dutkiewicz from Warsaw, Poland; Dr. Clara O’Brien from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro; Rev. Brian Weer; Dr. Ryan Namkoong; Rev. Jin Ho Kim; and Dr. Robert Ridgell (CU board member), Christ Episcopal Church and director

of the Queen City Youth Chorus. The Awards Ceremony and Winners Concert (3:30-5:30) followed a Symposium on Christian Education (1:153:15), finishing the day with a grand celebration. Dr. Dutkiewicz spoke to the competitors, noting their diligence and skill. Dr. Dutkiewicz’s wisdom graced our gathering as he also commended them for their efforts and encouraged them to keep developing their gifts. Dr. Sunny Chun, Chair of the

Board of Trustees, gave a heart-felt address to those gathered, letting them know how proud she was of each of them. The announcement and conveyance of the awards was led by President Ki-Hyun Chun and Director of Public Relations, Professor Minford (moderator). This year’s Grand Prize winner went to Abigail Hong on violin for her incredible rendition of . In orchestral instrument were 20 competitors. Awarded were: Shinae Ra (1st place); Rachel Yi (2nd place); Hajung Kim (3rd place); Hyejin Kim (jury prize); Grace Kim (jury prize).

Six students competed in voice, CCM, and piano. Awarded in piano were: Luis Matute (2nd place); Jun Son (3rd place). In voice: Tae Kim (1st place); Esther Baeg (jury prize). In CCM: Seung Jo Baek (1st place); Gloria Park (2nd place). Last year, a tie between first place winners necessitated a brief concert for the grand prize. This year, a Winners Concert gave the entire audience the chance to hear the talents of the top scorers in each category. The Winners Concert also allowed the audience the opportunity to enjoy the singing of local talent including several numbers

by the Queen City Youth Chorus (Panis Angelicus, Grace, etc.) and tenor Mr. Johnathan White and his accompanist Mr. Josh Barbour from the Opera Carolina Chorus. Mr. Hamin Kim (cellist), one of the winners from our first Music Competition in 2014, came to celebrate the occasion. Opera Carolina and Chun University have very special ties through the dedication and hard work of Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (board member with Opera Carolina) and Maestro James Meena (Opera Carolina General Conductor). In show of his support and dedication to Chun University, Maestro Meena

has offered apprenticeships to students in Chun University’s music program. This gracious act will allow music students the opportunity to learn under one of the foremost conductors in the US and build relationships with the opera community, developing both their talent and their careers. At Chun University, we look forward to our opening in 2016 with great anticipation, expecting the great things God has in store Nicole Minford

Armstead. Lina Kweman Rica Cruz. M. Quant-Young, Ting Li. There was a separate Talent Night at the UNCC Barnhardt Student Union. The cover story about the MAC this year shows the progress of this cultural event in 13 years. Two years after, in 2005, Dr. John Chen, then Festival Chairman, founded the Dragon Boat Races.Hence, the Asian Festival was moved to Lake Norman at Ramsey Creek Park with volunteers like Lina Kweman, Melvina Jett, Doris Tan, Kathy Choltus, Warren Zhou, etc.. Dragon Boat(DB) is the 8th fastest growing sport in the world, and is a great team builder, With origins in China 2300 years ago, in modern times, it started in 1976 during the first Hong Kong International. In the US it was introduced in the 80's.and is now in 100 cities. At the first DB Festival of 10 competing teams, one was composed of breast cancer survivors from Charleston. The team was then filming a documentary on how the sports rehabilitated their lives, as they competed around the US. This year, with 50 teams, there were some composed of survivors of other types of cancer as well. With the participation of many Fortune 500 companies in Charlotte, the DB races have become a company picnic, community & cultural event & competitive sport all in one. Visit Lake Norman helps promote the event. The Charlotte Dragon Boat Association fields its very own team & has won several medals in competitions in and outside NC. The US Dragon Boat Federation is the governing body that promotes DB for fitness, recreation & team building. It belongs to the International Dragon Boat Federation which conducts world championships every two years. Current world champions are the Canadians, Hungarians, Australians & Russians(in different categories). Competing Asian teams come from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines & Japan.. This year, the event will be held in Welland, Ontario, Canada from Aug 18 to 23,2015. The CAACC and the vibrant Asian American communities have been contributing to the richness of the cultural landscape in the international city of Charlotte for many years now thru the Asian Festival, one of the colorful legacies of the Chuns, This is all made possible with the support of the generous corporate sponsors and the dedication and hard work of the many, many volunteers..We sincerely thank them all. ASIAN FEST 2015 Total Immersion in Asian Culture When Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun founded the first Asian Festival in 1999, he wanted foremost, to unify the Asian communities. With the help of wife Dr.Sunny, daughter Lena, Andrea Lee, community volunteers like Becky Wu, Linda Yu, and a few others, an Asian event was launched at Marshall Park, coordinated by Vuthy Niles, Karla Gray of Park & Rec. It consisted of some cultural performances and a big raffle with beautiful household linens from Spring Industries as prizes. Over the years, the Asian Festival developed and grew. Food booths were added from the different communities & offered authentic home cooked Asian specialties. The Filipino Food Booth even then was among the most popular, run by the Kocaks. Now the FAS & FACC do the food booth coordinated by Jess Esguerra to raise money for charity projects. Non -food booths sold some arts & crafts from China, Laos, Korea,India,Thailand, etc.It has now become the "Marketplace" managed by Jennifer Khounbolay & Sana Louis. They also handled all the sponsors booths, food & nonfood booths, formerly coordinated by Jerry Tucker for many years. The financial management has always been diligently done by CAAC Treasurer Pauline Chan who also manned the Info booth with Dr. Jian Zhang, Grace & Julie Chen, now by CAHA Prexy Phin Xaypangna, Florami Lee, etc... The perennial problem of parking was efficiently handled by Lina Kweman, vice Tony Zhang & Kiran Patel.Tim Parolini designed all the promo materials & website for both festivals & MAC, with Michael Bond. Dr. John Chen took on the gargantuan task of fund raising ever since with grants & corporate donors, and has chaired the festival superbly every year. One time, there was a float of the Filipino American Community, made by Oscar Spence, FACC Rep for Albemarle, carrying Asian beauties in their colorful national dresses. Then there was the exciting hot air balloon ride for the kids, courtesy of Nimish Bhatt ..another year, there was a Chinese magician from Florida to entertain everyone.and even a Filipino band from Augusta, Ga. for an apres dance party, when the Asian Festival was moved to the Wachovia Atrium downtown.....yet another year, there were the Opera Carolina

stars who sang arias to the delight of classical music fans.. Wells Fargo set up a booth for the 1,000 paper crane project of Satoshi Watanabe, in support of the tsunami victims of Japan, then the "Hawak Kamay" project coordinated by Sankar Ramesh for the survivors of typhoon "Haiyan", the biggest to hit the Philippines with 6,300 casualties & millions made homeless. This year the Red Cross collected $1,000 for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Sponsors gave away a lot of freebies...Food Lion had interesting games wherein to win souvenirs & food stuff. Now Ingersall Rand gave

many countries". Each year brought something new and exciting to the Asian Festival. It has now become the ultimate "total immersion" experience in Asian culture. It is but a fitting celebration of the Cultural Heritage Month of May. In 2003, Dr. Nini Bautista, as CAACC President, founded the Miss Asian Festival to engage the young Asian Americans in the celebration of their culture. There were 10 candidates at the first Ms Asian Festival. Rigorous preparatory workshops were conducted at the first Asian church in Charlotte,i.e., the Presbyterian Church on Scaleybark, then the Asian Library. A team of volunteers

away backpacks & gadgets. Bank of America, Duke Energy, Choice Translating have always been there at the Festival.. The community cultural show coordinated by Sharada Gullapalli & Mae Armstead has expanded to include diverse performances from the Hmongs, Korea, Mongolia, Cambodia, Nepal & Burma, etc. Mainstays are the Peaceful Dragon Martial Arts, Little Lotus Dance Troupe, Phoenix Cultural Group & the Pacific Arts Dance Troupe. Witty emcees enhanced the shows, eg. Andrea, Mae Lin Plummer, Bao Tran Le,Sherman Tse & Sompith Sisoukrath . Stephanie Coueignoux, Emmy award winning anchor reporter of WSOC-TV emceed the MAC 2015.. The Cultural Booths started by Linda Yu & continued by Sunu Sebastian have grown to include 15 country displays, One regular festival goer named Grace B. said that with such exhibits,"You do not need to travel to Asia to learn about the culture of so

and resource persons like Moira Quinn, Angela Haigler, Florence, pageant winners, models, etc. helped the participants acquire leadership skills, public speaking know- how, etiquette, poise & stage presence. It has evolved into the Miss Asia Carolinas, a Multicultural Showcase, to feature the talent and accomplishments of the Asian American high achievers. Scholarship cash prizes from CAACC, Drs. KiHyun & Sunny Chun, URS, Southern Shows, FACC Past Prexy Lynn Polk, John Zhang, etc. were awarded to the winners. The highest number of participants was in 2013 when there were 24 participants, with the help of Jackie White. Support also came from the NAAAP Prexy Warren Chu, Bank of America & Hissho Sushi. They donated funds for additional awards in cultural advocacy, community service, aside from scholarship. 1st Symposium on Christian Education at Chun University

Saturday held great events for Chun University – our 2nd Music Competition and our 1st Symposium on Christian Education. This first Symposium gave our competitors, future students, and their families the opportunity to hear about the heart and vision of Chun University from three distinguished panelists. Because Chun University’s mission is to prepare students biblically and professionally for global service, our panelists addressed three major concerns: 1) the foundation of Christian Education, 2) the History and Purpose of Christian Education, and 3) Spiritual Formation in Christian Education. Our first panelist, Dr. Brian Phillips of the CiRCE Institute (Concord, NC), addressed the foundation of Christian Education: “What is the purpose of education? What is the aim of a Christian education? This talk will briefly explore the history of education and the contrast between conventional (modern) and Christian education, concluding that education must be for the cultivation of wisdom and virtue.” Highlights of his address included the fact that “the system is broken because the foundation is broken” as well as the concept from C. S. Lewis that humans are not just minds to be filled with facts and information, but to be educated creating a complete human being, mindful that we are souls, not just minds and bodies. For Christian Education to build on a solid foundation, two things must be addressed: 1) man is made in the image of God; teachers cannot treat students as products or empty vessels to be filled but as souls to be nurtured; 2) Christ is the curriculum of Christian Education; therefore, Christ is the model of how to teach and what to teach. Our second panelist, Rev. Mrs. Joyce Miles (China Grove, NC), discussed the history and purpose of Christian Education through her personal testimony. “When I first selected a major of Christian

Education at Lee University, I really had no clue what it was all about. I was a newlywed bride. Christian Education was my husband’s major. He suggested that I choose that major too, so that we could share textbooks and save some money. Little did I know that God was using my husband’s suggestion to chart a new course for my life, one that was in God’s perfect plan. Little did I know that this course of action would help me to equip workers for the Kingdom of God that would impact our entire world; that it would lead me to equip Sunday School teachers, Children’s Pastors, Youth Pastors,

the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:18-20: ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.’ This passage addresses a developmental process of spirituality in the life of a believer while encompassing the foundational values that are enveloped in the practice of Spiritual Formation, Christian Education and Discipleship in the

Senior Pastors, Missionaries, Church Officials, and Educators to impact millions to be true disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Through life and discovery, Rev. Miles came to understand the purpose of Christian Education to be to equip workers for the Kingdom of God to impact millions as able ambassadors for the Lord. Our third and final panelist, Dr. Barbara Peacock, (DMin in Spiritual Formation, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) expressed the nature of Spiritual Formation in Christian Education: “There are different theories that discuss the similarities and commonalities as well as the distinctiveness between Spiritual Formation, Christian Education and Discipleship. A biblical passage that supports the inclusiveness of [these areas] is

faith community.” Noting the basis of the idea of spiritual formation, Dr. Peacock took the audience to the first chapter of Genesis, that man was formed in the image of God. Quoting Dallas Willard’s work, Renovations of the Heart, she further defined spiritual formation through three categories: making disciples, understanding the

Trinitarian relationship between God and man, and the process of becoming like Christ. Dr. Peacock drew attention to Galatians 4:19, that Paul’s desire was to disciple believers until Christ was formed in them. Christ-likeness is then the goal of the process of discipleship where followers of Christ are being transformed into the image of Christ and become Kingdom citizens in this world, joining God where He is working. The audience had the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists. Some of the responses were as follows. Dr. Phillips: We teach in a non-Christian environment following the example of Christ – teaching by giving types and examples; we ask students questions regarding imperfections until they come to mastery; “what affect does disharmony in music have on your soul?” These bring them to ask the deeper questions. Dr. Peacock: We prepare ourselves spiritually before entering the classroom; thus we honor and welcome the Holy Spirit and the students will feel the difference. Dr. Phillips: How do we teach students to see that education is the cultivation of the soul? By expressing to them that we are more concerned about who they are when they go to college than where they go. Chun University’s mission is to prepare students for the work of the Kingdom through a Christian Education that takes as its heart these principles: Christ at the center, Christ as the goal of discipleship, and Christ as the means of discipleship. With Christ at the center of both biblical and musical studies, our mission will bring Him glory. Join us in 2016, and see what God has in store for you! by Nicole Minford

FACC Mayflower Festival One of the nobler goals of the Filipino Asian American Community of the Carolinas(FACC) is something beyond being the social glue that holds the community together. It is the preservation of the culture for the next generations yet to come.. Reme Grefalda, ( Filipina Curator /Founder of the Library of Congress Asian

American Collection who is also a historical archivist/ activist, playwright, author) has said at the Charlotte showing of her movie ," I Wanna Babysit Lola "... "The young Asian Americans are NOT their parents, since they have been born at a different time & place, and have been raised in a different milieu/environment. The only way you can inspire them to love their cultural heritage is to expose them to your history, traditions, literature, music & performing arts, and yes even cuisine." And that was what the FACC did at the traditional "Flores de Mayo " or Mayflower Festival last month at St Matthews Catholic Church Gym.. It is also known as the "Santacruzan" to commemorate the finding of the True Cross of Jesus, by Queen Helene ( Reyna Elena), mother of Emperor Constantine ( Rey Constantino), the first Roman emperor who allowed the

practice of Christianity without fear of persecution. The children of all ages of the FACC members came dressed in their Sunday best, some in gowns, as" sagalas" in the procession in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The procession follows an order...1) first, there are biblical characters like Santa Veronica with her veil with 3

Rebollo,( daughter of Analinda Rebollo, an active member of HOLD) who recently won as Miss Asia Carolinas 2015, and Reyna de las Flores, Sofia Escobal, (daughter of Robert Escobal) who was last year's Reyna Elena. Members of the eleven different Rosary Groups of Charlotte led by Paul & Nena Amigo, Mercy Hugo, Dan & Flor Manglicot, Cynthia & Marcial del Mundo etc. prayed the Rosary during the procession. The group of Edna Mager, Brenda Ferguson, Elsa Bounds, etc. led the community singing of Marian hymns in between the five decades of the Rosary. The rosary groups also miraculous imprints of Jesus brought the potluck dishes for instead of one, Santa Maria the community buffet supper Magdalena, etc.and 2) the enjoyed by all. Thanks to the traditional personification of Christian virtues like Reyna Fe ( Faith) Reyna Esperanza(Hope) & Reyna Caridad (Charity), etc. and 3) young ladies who represent the Marian titles of the Virgin Mary like Reyna del Santisimo Rosario( Queen of the Most Holy Rosary), Reyna de la Paz (Queen of Peace), Reyna de los Apostoles ( Queen of Apostles) etc. The statue of the Virgin Mary was led around the hall in procession, on members of the FACC Board, a carroza decorated with aka the "Seven Wonders" i,e, flowers, accompanied by the Prexy Robert Escobal, 1st important characters in the VP Nerissa Estes, 2nd VP procession ...the Reyna Elena= Cecille Perry, Sec Aurea Noelle Escobal, daughter of Barbee, Treas. Margie Clark, Gary & Emy Escobal ( both Auditor Liezel Bell, PRO work as nurses in a Rockhill Ram Cabanero, ExOfficio Dr. hospital), escorted by the Malette Oliveros, Rep. Gary Rey Constantino = Thomas Escobal, & Jessica Esguerra, Clarke( son of Craig & FACC who organized this important Treas. Margie Clark)... Reyna event along the cultural/ Emperatriz= Frances Clare religious traditions of the only

Catholic country in Asia, the Philippines of more than 90 million people. The next FACC event is the Independence Day Picnic on Saturday June 27, 2015, from 11 to 4 pm at the Indoor Shelter # 7003, William Davie Park, 4635 Pineville Matthews Road, Charlotte 28216. Independence from over 300 years of the Spanish colonial rule was earned after a bloody revolution. The first President of the first republic in Asia, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed independence on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite. Independence from the 50 years of US "protectorate government" was granted on July 4, 1946, after millions of Filipinos fought alongside the Americans in World War II.. The date is now celebrated as US-Philippine Friendship Day. We hope that most of the graduates of FACC members can attend and be recognized, especially those who graduated with honors. or have an

outstanding achievement. We can encourage our young to greatness by recognizing their early efforts and accomplishments!. The picnic will be a potluck event,( beef, pork and veggie dishes requested) with three lechons, two donated by FACC and one donated by Prexy Robert. For more info: www. Paris Forum for Korean Missionary Community of the French Speaking in Africa T h e 2015 Paris Forum (the 7th) has been held at GordonConwell Seminary, Charlotte NC, during May 5-8 through the support of KIMNET (Kingdom Inter-Missions Network). Paris Forum is the Korean Missionary Community of the French-speaking areas in Africa, established in 2006. The main topic of this Forum was “the oneness in mission and the strategy for collaboration in the mission field”. For this purpose all attendants grabbed the key word, John 20:21, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

and from 12 Mission Institutes in Africa. All of them have their own mission strategies and different denomination backgrounds, but gave their differences up and unified together. Missionary Chang-Ho Ahn, chief leader of the Paris Forum from Mali, said that this Paris Forum was a great leap for the unity of the West Africa mission and for the evangelization of Islam nations in Africa. Main speakers in this Forum were Pastor Kang-SuK So (New Eden Church, Korea), Pastor Dong-Whi Lee (Antioch Church, Korea), Pastor Jacob Lee (UBF,

On the basis of this purpose, at every meeting all the missionaries cried out before God to unify themselves in the mission field and to advance God’s Kingdom in West Africa. The 2015 Paris Forum has some historic weight in the history of the African mission. First, all missionaries who attended this Forum overcame the severe sufferings and maintained their identity as the African missionaries. Most nations of West Africa such as Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Moritania, and Mali have been classified into the most poor in the world (so-called “Yellow Windows”). Further, in recent times severe Ebola erupted in these nations of West Africa, resulting in many missionaries leaving their mission fields. However, these missionaries sustained their mission in West Africa to the end and attended this Forum by faith. Second, they have attempted to unify themselves for the glory of God and to establish the team mission for the advance of God’s Kingdom in West Africa. In total, 33 missionaries attended the Paris Forum from 13 nations

USA), and Pastor Sung-Ki Ho (PGM, USA). Among them, Pastor Dong-Whi Lee emphasized the oneness in love and encouraged the missionaries with the message of “10-elements of Antioch Church”, saying, “Prayer is not the ministry, but our breath.” Pastor Sung-Ki Ho offered the challenging model for the world mission, that is, “The Fourth Wave of Mission”. He challenged all the attendants to have the sense of the world mission, “here and now”. Pastor Jacob Lee suggested the healthy self-supporting laymen mission of UBF (University Bible Fellowship) for the next step in the world mission. At the meeting hall of GordonConwell, there was a big fresco (by Gerald Steinmeyer) to depict Jesus sowing the seeds of the gospel for the world, with the background of Jerusalem, the burning TwinTowers in New York, and the harvesting workers in the field. This vivid picture clearly teaches us who the missionary is and how Jesus advances his kingdom in the world. Thank God for blessing the 2015 Paris Forum and advancing his Kingdom in West Africa. by Ezra Cho (UBF, PHD)

Obama's Immigration Policy & by Okyere Bonna Future of the GOP Both republicans and democrats acknowledge that US immigration system is currently broken. It is no secret to every American politician republican or democratthat finding a permanent and comprehensive solution to the immigration problem is in the interest of the country. Many had banked their hopes on President Obama to be the very one to help fix this with urgency (especially as the first minority president). He had promised the immigrant community to get this situated and behind us during his presidential bid in 2008. Did he? Unfortunately Obama would rather like to do this together with congress. Yet he was so preoccupied with the nuances of the Obamacare that by the time he was aware he had lost his majority. Giving that US immigration reform is so important and long overdue, who would ever think that even a republican House (or congress) would not work cordially with a determined democratic president as the democrats had done in the past? Now President Obama has had to dance to the republican music, and it’s not been an easy road. Notwithstanding anytime he tried he had faced heavy republican opposition. He has tried bending at every measure to pass a unified immigration reform act without success. Consequently after waiting over 500 days into his second term in office for the House to take action on legislative solutions to no avail, President Obama was compelled to use his executive authority to protect millions of immigrants from deportation. President Obama argues he acted in good faith to help boost the economy and make America better for all. But you know what, the House republicans care less. On February 17, 2015 a federal judge in Texas temporarily

blocked President Obama's executive action on immigration. This had drawn a lot of support from many republican quarters across the nation and they are hoping this kills Obama’s initiative. The Obama ‘naysayers’ spearheaded by Texas republicans have replied saying Obama has acted unconstitutionally; they say he is turning US into a monarchy by his action. Really? This is not the first time a sitting US president has used executive order to protect immigrants. Interestingly two presidents have acted unilaterally on immigration and both were Republican. In

so critical of President Obama to the extent of calling him a dictator? The answer is perhaps simple: Republicans don’t want President Obama and the Democratic Party to get the glory and the votes of the immigrant/ minority population. In the November 8, 1988 election, Bush won a majority of the popular vote and a lopsided majority (40) of states in the Electoral College. Bush's percentage of votes in rural counties, in contrast to the suburbs, was significantly below the support they gave Reagan in 1980 and 1984. Although his victory was not a landslide in the popular vote

1986 President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) signed a full-blown amnesty law and his successor George H.W. Bush (1989-1993) extended amnesty to family members who were not covered by the last major overhaul of immigration law in 1986 in 1990. However none of the Republican presidents faced any political uproar. According to analysis by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), the President Obama’s executive actions on immigration would boost economic output by an estimated 0.4 to 0.9 percent over ten years, corresponding to increases in GDP of $90 billion to $210 billion in 2024. So why are the republicans

it was substantial. It is worthy of note that Bush in 1988 was the last Republican to date to carry certain states which have not voted for a Republican since, such as Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, and California. Neither his victory percentage (53.4%) nor his total electoral votes (426) have been surpassed in any subsequent presidential election. These states constitute a substantial immigrant population in the US. There is no way republicans are going to do any better in the impending 2016 general/ presidential elections if they hang on to the lack of cooperation with President Obama (and for

that matter, delaying on the immigration order). At the same time if they do allow Democrat under President Obama to pass the said reform without some form of ownership they stand to lose big in 2016. How does a republican majority (i,e,, House) redeem the time? Republicans would have to find a way of dealing with Obama’s immigration executive order, regardless before 2016 general elections. The immigration issue is not going to go away. It will soon come back as one of the hot issues in the 2016 general elections. With the soaring popularity of Obama due to a good economy and a goodwill message to the immigrant community via his executive action, any serious republican (presidential) candidate would have to barge. For any republican presidential candidate to make any traction, he /she would have to come out with a solution for the congress, at least to work with the president to some extent to appease the immigrant community. America needs to know that something substantial is going to be done on the issue when (or if) a republican president is elected. My prediction is that the republicans would only agree to an adhoc solution that will make them sit pretty with minority voters. Yet on the campaign trail, they would advertise their strong support for a comprehensive immigration law while demonizing President Obama for not going through congress. Since Obama is not seeking any re-election, no matter how you dice it, he would have prevailed. One thing I can bet on is that as soon as the 2016 elections is over, no matter the results the Republican Party will seize the moment to reconcile with the immigrant community by passing or endorsing a sweeping immigration reform law that will appease the immigrant community and use it as a starting point to wooing this minority to their side, hoping to undo the damage since Bush.

Charlotte Asian Basketball League Week # 3 of the Charlotte Asian Basketball League with an incredible list of featured guest appearances did not disappoint. The league event started with the customary "moment of silence to honor our God” that begins each week of league play. With the various Asian countries comes various religions. The league opted for a universal prayer/meditational approach. UNC Charlotte sophomore honor student, The Star Spangled Banner was sung by UNC Charlotte student, Melissa Chrischel Olarte. Ms. Olarte is a member of Delta Phi Lambda, an Asian interest sorority, who will partner with Pi Alpha Phi, UNC Charlotte Asian interest fraternity , Asian Student Association and the Charlotte Asian Basketball League to participate in local charity and community events. Pi Alpha Phi and the Asian Student Association was represented by it’s vice president and philanthropic chair, Joseph Tong. The talented songstress got the crowd on it’s feet, including Senator Malcolm Graham who now serves as the

special assistant to the president in charge of community relations and government affairs at Johnson C. Smith University. He addressed the large crowd and thanked the Asian community for their economic, social and cultural impact in Mecklenburg county and NC and stated that the best was yet to come as the Asian population is the second fastest growing in NC. He encouraged the young men of the Asian community to vote to select leaders that represented their community. Dr. Arthur Jackson ,who was pried away by the commissioner, Ed. Onia, from UNC

Charlotte graduation ceremonies, followed with a speech stressing the importance of higher education and perhaps, the most important message of all- THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE. The crowd was electrified as the Charlotte Hornets cheerleaders, the Honey Bees, performed and posed for pictures with the crowd. Children, players and grandparents could be seen eagerly awaiting the arrival of league mascot, Dani

the Dragon. The mascot idea came to the commissioner as he pondered and prayed for a solution to the public relations drama of having cheerleaders and NO Hugo (Hornets team mascot). He jokingly told his daughter, Tiffany Onia, who serves as the league’s deputy commissioner ,that she would finally get an opportunity to repay him for all those years of dance and ballet classes, she would be the league mascot. The visits of these two community leaders, along with the upcoming visits of CMPD Deputy Chief, Vicki Foster, future HS basketball hall of fame coach, Will Robinson, YMCA Sr. VP, Michael DeVaul and NBA Charlotte Hornets GM, Rich Cho, was designed to connect the league to and build relationships with the institutions throughout the area. These institutional pillars would be needed to build his vision of and enduring basketball league and one supported by the various institutions throughout the community. The commissioner, Ed. Onia, and deputy commissioner, Tiffany Onia, invited all the Asian community organization presidents to attend the event

but ZERO attended or responded to the invitation. Excited at the discovery that he had the oddest but perhaps the most effective vehicle by which to unite the Asian community, albeit just by running the Charlotte Asian Basketball League. He witnessed for himself what the Asian community should hold as an ideal, Asians from all the different countries and religions working together as a team towards common goals. He realized that the 18- 45 year old male demographic was almost a negligible part of any Asian organization’s active membership. He knew that if that trend continued, eventually ALL the Asian organizations would die. The problem was the Asian community leaders clinging on to customs, traditions and beliefs, thus wanting to preserve heritage and culture, were ignoring the plight of the young Asian in America facing the challenges of cultural identity and balancing them with the pressures to assimilate into mainstream American culture that is portrayed in the media and in the schools and neighborhoods in which they live. He has set to forth to create an Asian community organization that, albeit through basketball, would mentor the young and talented Asian-American minds that had an

affinity to lead and to have real life examples and mentors (politicians, police chiefs, chancellors, NBA executives, CEOs) that would guide them to non traditional, highly visible leadership roles that they’ve not been previously exposed to. Cultural events, as well as speakers, would be injected between games to blend the old and the new.

The games featuring some of the areas most talented players and most decorated Asian-American teams went on with the senator, vice chancellor along with Hornets representatives marveling at the talent of the Asian-American basketball league players and mascot and the excitement of the fans, children, parents and grandparents coming together as a true community. They marveled at a league not even a year old with the leadership and vision to assemble all the pieces for a league supported by all the institutions of the community. They witnessed what clearly could be seen as a preview of the power a unified Asian community could wield not only in the upcoming elections but in the future. They saw the joy of the Asian faces young and old enjoying a day and event made

special not by the guests but by the unification of an entire Asian community-albeit through basketball. What they did not see was what was clearly evident in the league commissioner’s eyes, the noted absence of the Asian community leaders who ignored invitations to support the young Asian community.Thank you to Malette Aquino Oliveros, Bert Rodriguez, MJ and Kay Antone, all past officers of the FilipinoAmerican Community of the Carolinas for hearing the pleas of the commissioner and AsianAmerican youth and making time to attend this milestone in the Charlotte Asian-American community. I sincerely thank you for supporting this effort to awaken, uplift and unite not only the young men of the Charlotte Asian community but the entire Asian community. UPDATE: The Charlotte Asian Basketball League was invited to join the Charlotte Hornets Foundation Non-Profit Partner Community Corner program on May 13th.

Honor and Pride as an Asian American As a Korean American growing up in a fairly urban area, you come across a number of people from very rich ethnic backgrounds. Usually, when you ask someone from an immigrant background, they can paint a story of trial and tribulation and also one of perseverance and triumph. As a daughter of parents who emigrated from South Korea, I have heard countless stories and have had the opportunity to take pride in my vibrant cultural background. I see my parents working at their independentlyowned business to give my family a home and I am reminded of how far they must have come. Then I see the community that my family is a part of and the generations of Asian Americans that live around me and I am reminded of the measure of depth that the Asian presence has reached in the United States. I am

most reminded of all of this in May, which marks the beginning of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is not just

in the United States, but also to embrace the richness that the Asian culture contributes to the melting pot of America. Over 14 million Asians live in the United States today, which amounts to hundreds, if not thousands, of languages, dances, songs and traditions that date back thousands of years. So, why not share them? At the Asian Festival in Charlotte, a myriad of Asian cultures are on display every year. Between the performances, food and competitions, there is so much that catches your eye. What’s the difference between taekwondo and karate? Instead of Googling the answer, you can see for yourself through skillful performances of each at the festival. This is also one of the few places where

there is a plethora of global street food at arm’s reach. Although I have attended for many years, this year was the first time that I had the chance to play a part by dressing in traditional Korean garb to represent my country in the Miss Asia Carolinas event, one of many events held during the festival. Although on the surface it may seem like a typical beauty pageant, beyond that, it is an event that promotes diversity and inclusion, while instilling pride in our own unique cultures. Each of the women that participated, including myself, came from completely different backgrounds, but were brought together in unity to celebrate our Asian heritage. It was an honor to be a part of something that continues to celebrate the growing diversity in our nation—in our home by Esther Chun
