FACC holds a "Pista sa Nayon"
่ฒๅพ่ณๆฅๅญฃ็พ้ฃ็ฏ
The Filipino American Community of the Carolinas, held a Spring Fling iwith a traditional "Pista sa Nayon" ( or town fiesta) to welcome its new members on April 25, 2015 at the Park on Park Road. The FACC is among the oldest Asian community associations in Charlotte, having been formally organized in 1990 (although the first Filipino Gala was held two years earlier ). It is among the first associations to join the Asian Chamber of Commerce upon its founding in 1999, and has members from both North & South Carolina. Over the years FACC has sponsored many charitable projects for the local community as well as in the Philippines. To further assist the community in raising funds for charity and educational purposes, a 501(c) 3 entity, the Filipino American Spirit was granted approval by the IRS in November 2013. This spring fiesta is the second of seven signature events of the robust Filipino American community in Charlotte, the first being the induction into office of the new set of officers in January. The others are the Mayflower Festival or Santacruzan, on May 9, the participation in the Asian Festival on May 16 ( Miss Asia Carolinas & Dragon Boat Festival), the Independence Day Picnic on June 27, the Annual Gala Night on November 14, the Christmas Party & Annual Election on December 5. The current members of the FACC Board are very dedicated & enthusiastic if newbies, dubbed as the "Seven Wonders." Some are of the "sandwich" generation, who are taking care of their young kids, and at the same time, looking
ํ๋ฆฌํ ๋ฏธ๊ตญํํ ๋ด ์์์์น
after their ageing parents. Earlier, the FACC held a Birthday Party for all January & February celebrants at the home of President Escobal in Waxhaw, where most of the FACC volunteers attended and enjoyed the camaraderie, good food and the fun filled night of singing and dancing, even as they discussed the FACC signature events for the year. The old & new members were warmly welcomed by the officers, with Treas. Margie Clark at the Registration Desk. FACC Secretary Aurea Barbee & Jessica Esguerra coordinated the potluck buffet, and the members were requested to bring the following, according to their family names.A-D=adobo(chix or pork),the Filipino national dish.E-H,pancit(noodles) including the popular pancit palabok. I-L=spaghetti (for the kids)...M-P= fried chicken wings, everybody's fave ...Q-T= desserts,& all kinds of Pinoy "kakanins" ( eg, leche flan, maja blanca,etc.)...U-Z=veggie dishes ( pinakbet/bulanglang), The piece de resistance were the three lechons, the famous Philippine spit-roasted pig, slowly cooked by turning over live coals and basted to give that special crunch to the skin. These Cebu style lechons ( so called since they are done in Cebu in this style, stuffed with plenty of herbs and so tasty that they do not need the customary pebre or liver sauce ) were donated by FACC, one by the well known lechonero himself, Prexy Robert. The 1st VP Nerie Estes organized the games for the children which included some traditional Filipino games, like the "pabitin" to introduce to the young Filipino Americans who were born and raised here, the
games their parents played in the Philippines before the advent of video games & iPads, etc.. Do you still remember those games, such as pantintero, piko, luksong tinik, taguan, sungkaan, siklot, tumbang preso, etc. ? For the young at heart, 2nd VP Cecile Perry conducted some fun and games - bingo & raffle, with prizes donated by some members and by FACC. She and Auditor Liezel Bell decorated the pavilion with a barrio fiesta theme. Raymond Barbee provided the music. PRO Ram Cabanero handled the early bird sale of the tickets to the FACC Gala to be held on Nov 14 from 6 pm to 12 midnight at the Embassy Suites in Concord. There were also beautiful T shirts with the FACC logo for sale. You are cordially invited to the Mayflower Festival /Flores de Mayo/Santacruzan (potluck) be held on May 9 from 3 to 10 pm at St. Matthews Gym,8015 Ballantyne Commons. The Philippine Independence will be celebrated at a Picnic onSaturday, June 27 , from 11 to 4 pm at the William Davie Park on 4635 Pineville-Matthews Road. Other events announced were the Invitational Showing of the Manny Pacquio vs Floyd Mayweather Fight on May 2,2015 from 8 pm at the Asian Library , proceeds to go to the charity projects in the GK Village of the Carolinas, Nagtipunan, Quirino.. the Eric Hugo Tennis Tournament on May 30, proceeds to go to the scholarship fund, the Eskuwelahang Munti Summer Fun Days and school opening on Sunday, Sept 6,2015 from 2 to 5, Asian Libraryโ

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty five years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.โ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

events for many years = the Asian Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, etc. Other newcomers admitted that they do not know CAHA nor the CAACC as yet. 2) Kind of partnership/ support you'd like to see between Asian communities & CAHA/CAACC. There was a plea to have an Asian representative(like the Latinos) in the state agencies which are giving out grants. 3).What do you know about the entire Asian community as a whole. What's your perception? From the issues of concern brought out, it seems that the Asian community remains under-served by government services & agencies. The lively discussion brought out the need to request for social services, legal resources, mental health support to some Asian minority groups. 4)Thoughts on how to bring awareness of the Asian community to the entire Char-Meck community?. While many Asians have distinguished themselves in their particular fields, thru the many mainstream recognition awards, there are not enough collective recognition of Asians, for their contributions to the economic prosperity, cultural enhancement, educational achievements in the community. The group was eager to continue with this type of dialogue and interconnections and wanted to meet more often. 5) Thoughts on having a centralized Calendar of Events from the Asian Community?. Are you willing to provide info?An off shoot of the project of the Charlotte Chamber, the Asian leaders endorsed the idea as a great info resource, and requested the Asian Herald to publish such a calendar. Other projects were discussed aside from the Asian Festival/ Dragon Boat Festival/MAC on May 16th, like the Essay writing contest for high school students on the topic "I am Asian" , the winners of which will be awarded with cash prizes at the Gandhi Unity Fall Festival on Sat Oct 10, 2015 from 3 to 7 pm. โ
CAHA/CAACC Spark Collaboration among Asians The Charlotte Asian Heritage Association or CAHA was formally organized in February 7,2006 by then CAACC Founder & Chairman Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun, CAACC President Dr. Nini RB Bautista and Vice President Dr. John Chen,as an important arm of the CAACC, for the cultural activities, to complement the Asian Chamber's mission in education and business development. The first President was the well known Indian businessman & philantrophist, Gobind "Garry" Bhojwan, Founder & Chairman, BINACO Group of Companies, named after his wife Bina ( Real Estate/Ivey minimall on Tryon, Mortgage, Construction). The first CAHA project was the Gandhi Peace Park featuring the statue of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the universal Champion of "satyagraha", or non -violent civil disobedience, which led to the independence of India. Gandhi influenced the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King in the US, and other parts of the world. Garry, who underwrote the $32 T cost of the statue, as a gift to the city of Charlotte, formed a 501(c)3 entity to insure the continuity of the Gandhi Park & Monument, a bronze statue, 8"3" in height. It was the work of a woman sculptor, Mrs Gunvant Vaghsia. She was present during the Unveiling & Dedication ceremony on February 10,2009, at the old County Courthouse garden on Trade & Alexander. On the Advisory Board were County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts, Dr. J.Chen, Dr. J. Zhang, Dr. Maha Gingrich, Roger Wyer , Nimish Bhatt & Dr. Nini. Some years earlier, current CAACC President Nimish Bhatt led a group of Indian businessman in bringing to
Charlotte a similar statue of Gandhi in the classic pose of his famous 320 km/200mi march to the sea, in protest of the salt tax levied by the British in colonial India. Nimish also continued the tradition of celebrating the Unity Fall Festival & Vigil on Gandhi's"jayanti" or birthday, October 2, which was started by Garry, Bina, & their children Jaya and Vijay Bhojwani. CAHA President now is Ms. Phin Xaypangna, Diversity Manager/Organizational Development & Learning consultant, Mecklenburg County Govt, Founder & President of Phin Consulting, an active community volunteer
16 countries/ethnic groups, many were first time participants :Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, China, Hmong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand & Vietnam.. Dr. Chun was presented with a rare copy of "Tragic Mountain", The Hmongs, the Americans, the Secret War for Laos (1942-1992) by Dr. Jane H. Merritt, Nobel-nominated scholar & photo journalist. It was given by a Hmong, Avonne Yang, UNCC Col. of Nursing. Dr. Chun also reiterated his full support of the Asian Festival especially the MAC. He stressed that education is of paramount importance as he
with ASC, Levine Museum, Y Metro, Meck Ministries, MAC and the national ASPA. Husband Kris, an Employment Consultant with the NC Dept of Commerce also volunteers at the Asian Festivals./Dragon Boat Races. Her first initiative was to gather the Asian Leaders for a meeting on March 21,2015 at Wan Fu Restaurant, for a more in depth networking. It was to gather some feedback on the perceptions of CAHA./ CAACC by Asians, to find out ways and means on how these organizations can better serve the community, and to increase collaboration among the different groups. The goal was for unity, harmony, common purpose & mutual benefit. The enthusiastic group of some 45 attendees represented
informed the group about Chun University which will open Sept 2015. Dr.John spoke about the infinite value of family unity as the glue that keeps the Asian immigrant communities whole. Nimish reminded everyone of the power of politics, and our sacred duty to vote & be engaged. He also asked for support of CAHA, and the Senior Center, to give our elders dignity in their old age & to die with dignity. Sunu encouraged everyone to sign up & become members of CAACC to support its mission. Five questions were posed & here are some responses 1) What's your perception of CAHA/CAACC?. Some said that CAACC is the most well known association of Asians in Charlotte, & they have been participating in its signature

Unity Classical Charter School
We are getting closer to the prospect of being approved by the State Board of Education to open Unity Classical Charter School on Scaleybark Road, August of 2016. While the Charter School Advisory Board has recommended to the State Board of Education that our application be approved, we still must await a final hearing in the next months. We hope that all our work will be validated by the State Board, and thereby we will then be able to start preparing for the day of opening. A charter school is a public school that differs from traditional public schools mainly in that it is directly accountable to a board of citizens that must ultimately account for academic excellence to the State Board of Education. A charter school is not a private school. The budget for the school is provided mostly by the State through the gathering of tax dollars. But since a charter school is a 501c3, a charitable entity, we can and will raise dollars to make the school as strong as donors will allow us to become. In fact, the legislature that allows for charter schools expects us to raise funds to make the school stronger. Charter schools are a growing option around the country, not only in Mecklenburg County. This phenomenon of charter school growth comes as a legislatively created force of competition hoping to gain improvement in education for all students. We will offer a classical approach to education that has produced outstanding results in charter schools of this type over the last fifteen to twenty years. To gain
further understanding of what we mean about classical charter schools, reference the web site that tells the story of the Great Hearts Academies in Arizona (www.greatheartsaz.org). They model the classical approach, they are charter, and they outperform the traditional public model of education by a wide margin. They are not simply one good school that might be dismissed by detractors as benefitting from an excellent principal, or
understanding. The student drills on math tables so that they build the foundation of number fluency. Then, as students move along in their natural development, the focus of teaching adapts to their mental changes, and in the middle school years we focus on teaching a child the rules of logic. Think of it this way, since children in these years are beginning to think more conceptually (and less concretely, as they did in grammar years) we adjust the learning. Now,
an unusual demographic of very able students. They are in fact a network (or system) of more than 16 schools that all perform extremely well. Charter school admission is gained through the lottery if more students want to enter the school than the school has seats available. Great Hearts Academies now serve more than 6,000 students, and have a waiting list that is about twice that number. Classical education moves a child through three distinct phases of learning that roughly correspond to the natural development of the mind. The elementary school years are known as the grammar phase, middle school is the logic phase, and high school is the rhetoric phase. In the grammar phase of learning the schoolโs curriculum focuses on the rules of subject matter (such as the math tables, or the rules of grammar). In this phase a student drills on phonics so that they understand how the language is structured and thereby they gain the foundation for reading and
since a typical middle school child wants to argue with almost everything, we teach them how to argue logically and defensibly. In short we begin to teach them to think for themselves. After all the goal of education is to teach a child how to think, not what to think. Then in high school years when children become focused on self expression, we teach them how to present their subject winsomely, logically and substantially. This process of education recognizes that every subject has its own rules, logic and rhetoric. By developing studentsโ understanding this way
we work naturally with their brain development, while making them stronger thinkers. It is also noteworthy that in classical schools students spend more time reading original texts written by the author, and less time reading text books. In classical schools you will almost always find a heavy focus on languages and the arts as well. For example, the typical classical school will feature Latin as a primary language requirement. Why? Because it is foundational to understanding all romance languages (which includes English). The value of this is evidenced by a study done in the 1990โs. At that time the average verbal S.A.T. score in America was 505, yet for students that had taken Latin it was 657. Unity will also feature Mandarin language at a certain point in the curriculum. We do this because we think Mandarin may become one of the next power languages in the world. There is much more to say about the value of a classical approach to education. It might be a little sweeping to say it this way, but Americaโs first two hundred years benefitted from the classical education model that governed the Western world for two thousand years. Then more than 60 years ago we started sliding away from classical education and our academic rating now has Americans in the bottom third of the developed world. Should the State Board grant our application in the next few months we will work diligently to bring a school of quality to the community.

Lucia Back Stage with stars Intrigue, love, and death -the classic Sir Walter Scott tale of young love caught between feuding Scottish families is brought back to life in Opera Carolina's updated rendition of Lucia di Lammermoor. Lucia Ashton (Kathryn Lewek), the sister of Enrico (Hyung Yun), is the delicate daughter
performances of sacred music. Opera Lively (official reviewer of Opera Carolinaโs performances) gave Lucia an overall grade of A+. Opera Lively summaries the event in their online review: โMs. Lewek didn't simply repeat the usual notes that the most recent sopranos in this role have been singing, but indeed
of the house of Lammermoor, overcome by love for her rescuer, Edgardo (Zach Borichevsky), the last of the Ravenswood family. A secret engagement and a forced marriage follow to produce a mad and murderous Lucia. The Mad Scene, as it is known, is not only given to dramatic acting but also to some of the most difficult bel canto vocals of the opera world. Kathryn Lewekโs role in this scene was recently described in a review by Opera Lively as โout of this worldโ with acting equal to that of Natalie Dessay and Anna Netrebko. Lewek has earned international renown for her brilliant coloratura in the role of Queen of the Night in Mozartโs The Magic Flute (Royal Danish Opera, 2015) as well as numerous other roles and
presented quite different lines that surprised and enchanted me. Mr. Stewart is one to be watched, with a fierce and assertive Arturo (no wimp, as we see in some productions). Also to be noticed is that both Ms. Lewek and Ms. Miller are very beautiful ladies (and Mr. Borichevsky is a handsome lad), so the realistic effect was enhanced, and we got a charming couple in the principal roles. โConducting and orchestral playing were phenomenal. Those who follow my North Carolina reviews know very well that James Meena is a great operatic conductor. I thought that tonight he was even better than in previous shows, as hard as it is to improve from his already very high level. As he explained to me, he wanted the Charlotte Symphony to play with

delicacy: "This is no Turandot," he said. Mission accomplished, because the orchestra was extremely elegant. The sound quality coming from the pit was a pleasure to hear. In terms of aural beauty, the orchestra tonight sounded as good as the Met's! โSome other touches were compelling. When Edgardo throws to the ground the necklace he had given Lucia, in a fit of jealous rage, she dives after it and crawls through the
stage to grab it. Lucia had these sudden bursts of odd behavior that added to the psychological characterization of the role. Lucia stabs herself at the end of the Mad Scene instead of just
collapse in exhaustion, which Ms. Lewek explained as a moment of lucidity at the end of her nervous breakdown, when she realizes that there is no way out for her. Unconventional, but effective, and blocking in that moment was nice, with virtually everybody rushing to her.โ Hyung Yun gave a strong, passionate performance as Enrico, both in vocals and acting, demonstrating a controlling brother and a fierce hatred of his enemy. Opera Lively noted the power of Enricoโs acting during the moment when he was told of Luciaโs love for Edgardo, you could almost hear his teeth grinding in anger. The Asian Herald looks forward
to Opera Carolinaโs next thrilling season including a third presentation of Art Music Poetry, Beethovenโs Fidelo, and Gounodโs Romeo and Juliet.โ

Charlotte Asian Basketball League The Charlotte Asian Basketball League came out of a more than 10 year hiatus in July of 2014. Inspired by the vision and support of Rev. Fr. Patrick Winslow, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church
and request of his faithful friend, Ferdie Espiritu, who asked Ed. Onia, league commissioner to form an Asian basketball league in Charlotte that would allow his son, Dru Espiritu, and his friends from many countries in SE Asia to play in a league of their own, a new Charlotte Asian Basketball League was formed. Inspired to reverse the racial self segregation that he felt plague many societies and communities, including the Charlotte Asian community, Ed. Onia, set out to create a league for ALL Asians throughout the Carolinas. The young basketball players and enthusiasts in Charlotte would have to drive to cities such as Greensboro and Raleigh to play in an Asian basketball league prior to the Charlotte Asian Basketball Leagueโs formation. Though inexperienced at running or forming a basketball league, Charlotte Asian Basketball League commissioner , Ed. Onia, assisted by his 17 year old daughter and deputy commissioner, Tiffany Onia, took on the
challenge of starting this new basketball league. Utilizing his experience in sales & marketing, management and business development, as well as his new found Catholic faith, he made changes after the first league season to incorporate a professionally designed league logo allowing him to create league banners and T-shirts to market the league. His daughter provided valuable insights into todayโs youth that began the creation of a very popular league Facebook page that showcases her newly developed sports photography skills and the start of music during games to create an NBA style atmosphere to engage players and fans alike. They began their community outreach effort that would develop ties with his church, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the various Asian community organizations, educational institutions
such as UNC Charlotte, the Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte community, as well as city and state government. VIP speakers including UNC Charlotte Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Arthur Jackson, have come to speak to league players with a virtual whoโs who of Charlotte community leaders lined up to speak this upcoming league season. Their vision was not only to create a
league for Asian basketball players that would live on well beyond their tenure as
commissioners but to also develop an atmosphere and culture that would welcome and feature players from all Asian countries. In keeping with the traditions and teachings of the church and the Asian cultures, the league has sought to create not only a league where Asian players can play basketball but also an event where entire families can enjoy a Saturday afternoon. The league began selling Asian food and will introduce a league mascot and live vocal perfomances this year to engage the players, spectators and fans, the Charlotte Asian community and perhaps most importantly, the young children and parents/ grandparents. The Charlotte Asian Basketball League will also feature an appearance by members of the Charlotte Hornets cheerleading squad, the Honey Bees during this upcoming league season. The league currently features players from the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, China, Guam, Cambodia, Thailand and of Hmong ancestry with the formation of a Korean and Indian team in the works. The league rosters contain some of the finest Asian basketball players and teams in all of the Carolinas. The leagueโs teams are perennial
champions at most of the Asian basketball tournaments held in the Carolinas. With the notoriety of the excellent teams and players in the league and itโs recent feature in the Charlotte Observer, basketball players throughout the region have begun to take notice of this newly formed league. Players now come from Greensboro, Lexington, Hickory, Conover, WinstonSalem, Kings Mountain and Statesville to play in the league. As part of the leagueโs growth strategy, the development of a free agent team placement/ creation program is being created to allow players that would like to play but currently do not have a team to come together to form a team. With the assistance and guidance of Vietnam native and prominent Charlotte physician, Dr. Vu Nguyen, the league commissioner and deputy commissioner are developing a player mentoring
program to help players to fulfill their educational and career goals, as well as community outreach efforts that will see league members working with local charitable organizations. The league begins its fourth league season on April 25th at 1:30PM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church gym. For more details regarding the Charlotte Asian Basketball League, please contact Ed. Onia at 704 604 7852 or simply come out and watch a game.โ Edga Onia

may 15, 2015 at 4:30 pm great commission assembly hall, room 122
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (GCTS) will be dedicating the David M. Rogers Hall of Mission on May 15. The Hall reflects the vision of the seminary to โadvance Christโs kingdom in every sphere of life by equipping Church leaders to think theologically, engage globally and live biblically.โ To express our vision in our highly interactive new space, the seminary community is inviting its constituents to listen to a thoughtful discussion on โFaith in Public Life.โ At GCTS we understand Christian belief to have a meaningful bearing on our involvement in every sector of society โ from religion and philanthropy to business, government and education, and to health, the justice system, sports and entertainment, and media and technology. Several thoughtful leaders will discuss the challenges and opportunities of living faithfully in their given sphere of public life. Our forum will begin with the personal story of Mart Green and the journey of faith for the Greenโs family owned company, Hobby Lobby. Each panelist will then give a five minute introductory statement regarding their own expression of faith in a particular aspect of public life. This will be followed by a moderated discussion between them. The final half hour of the forum will be open to questions from guests attending in person or online.

are enduring poverty, racism, physical and emotional abuse and no familial support, Adam had to survive on his own. Despite the many hardships he has faced, he has built a family of his own that includes three young children and a baby due in May. In January 2015, Adamโs past criminal record and immigration status as a lawful permanent resident caused him to receive notification from Homeland Security to appear for a deportation hearing in April of 2015 and now faces a second court appearance in front of an immigration judge in June. Lori Walls, Attorney representing
Adam was born in South Korea and adopted by American citizens when he was three years old. As a child, he faced unspeakable physical and emotional abuse from his first adoptive family, was separated from his biological sister, and later โrehomedโ into another appallingly abusive placement. On top of all these crimes committed against him as a child, neither of Adamโs adoptive families completed the process for him to receive United States citizenship. Adam is now 40 years old and facing deportation for past convictions for which he had already served his time. More information about Adamโs story can be found in a recent New York Times article. Like many young people who
Adam Crapser, shared the following quote: โMr. Crapser's deportation proceedings are based on offenses that were committed 18 and 20 years ago, and he has served his time. Punishing him further with deportation would be a terrible injustice. It would separate him from the only family he has ever known. It would devastate not only him but his wife and children.โ Over 300,000 transnational adoptees currently live in the United States; approximately one-third of these are of Korean descent. It is currently unknown how many adult Asian American adoptees are living without finalized naturalization paperwork; however, it is understood to be in the thousands. Since its inception,

NAKASEC and its affiliates have been fighting to change the unjust immigration system in the United States and have repeatedly called to stop the inhumane deportations and separation of families. We again uplift this demand in the name of Korean American Adam Crapser and his family and other intercountry adoptees in his situation. Policy changes that can begin to addresses these challenges include an amendment to the Child Citizenship Act (CCA) of 2000, which established automatic citizenship for all children under the age of 18 born or legally adopted outside of the United States beginning in 2001. Currently, CCA does not apply to older adoptees such as Adam or intercountry adoptees whose adoptions were never finalized, have expired green cards, may have emancipated themselves from abusive adoptive families, or have criminal backgrounds. The amendment to CCA, introduced in 2013 would expand coverage to include ALL intercountry adoptees, including Adam Crapser, regardless of their age, immigration status, whether their adoptions were finalized or criminal backgrounds. NAKASEC also demands that the United States and South Korea stop the placement of children into abusive households. NAKASEC and its affiliates recognizes that the story of Adam Crapser and other intercountry adult adoptees brings to light the complex intersection of adoptee rights and immigrant rights and is co-sponsoring a Needs Survey for adult adoptees who have fallen into intersecting status areas between adoption finalization, immigration and citizenship. The survey results will help inform efforts to identify and coordinate immediate postadoption resources and services. It will assist adoptees like Adam who need help navigating adoption finalization as adults, who are going
further underground because of expired green card statuses, and who may be in criminal and immigration court proceedings, and require support nowโ
