Lots must be paid in-full prior to release of genetic material, and/or transfer of registration. If invoiced, payment is expected within 30 days. Anything past 60 days from the invoicing date, and the sale may be forfeited at the seller’s discretion. Finance charges will apply after 60 days.

PERFORMANCE WITH BALANCE. MANAGEMENT
After escaping big city life and relocating to the beautiful rolling hills of East Tennessee, John knew he wanted to buy some land and start a small cattle operation. As a child, he spent part of every summer at his cousin’s cattle farm in Virginia and had fond memories of time spent tending the cattle, crops, and fences.
He started with a small commercial cow-calf operation and leveraged this time to get the infrastructure right and re-learn lost skills. He was blessed to have a neighbor in Joe Reid who had the better part of 50 years in the business. He also attended the local Extension Office Master Beef Producer class, twice. As an avid outdoorsman and Eagle Scout, he knew he had to be a steward to both the land and animals under his care. In this time, he worked with the USDA on a number of projects and was selected the Conservation farmer of the year.
Once he had the infrastructure he needed, McGinn Angus moved into the registered Black Angus business. This was another huge learning curve, aided by research and the help of knowledgeable and willing mentors. Eastern Tennessee is blessed to be the home of several well-established breeders. A special thanks to Dr. Alex Williams of Williams Angus for taking a great deal of time sharing his years of breeding knowledge with John.
As he continued to research the industry, attend sales, study sale books and learn about genetics, John realized he wanted to specialize in breeding elite heifers to become the foundation of future herds across the country. With genetic herd improvement year over year, John knew the only way to compete was by carefully selecting donors that would become the foundation of his operation. He spent months evaluating top cows and what made them special. John scrutinized every EPD and developed a weighting system to come up with what he would consider the perfect donor. It was not about single traits, but balance in key performance areas and elite performance in others.
John then took his vision of the perfect donor and did a search on the Angus Association for genetically tested females that met these criteria. There were ONLY seven listed. McGinn Angus purchased three of the seven, with one still remaining at his operation, and two having gone on to be donors for other prolific Angus breeders.
The next step was to build a predictive offspring model, dusting off John’s graduate school statistics classes. John modeled traits that would enhance the current donor’s EPDs, trying to predict what would be required to be elite when the calves hit the ground starting in September of 2020. He then looked for bulls matching the criteria and contacted the owners to get semen. The first call was to Edgewood Angus on EWA Teamwork. They were great to work with, and he was one of the very first to get his semen even before he became available through Select Sires. John also leveraged SS Enforcer and G A R Hometown. Utilizing IVF reverse sort semen for heifers with Oocyte retrieval and embryo work done by Trans Ova, alongside a local certified Embryologist to complete transfers, McGinn Angus was born!
