Land Acknowledgement

Ashbury College acknowledges its campus is located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Anishinàbe Omàmìwininì Algonquin Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial.

This Land Acknowledgement was developed by Ashbury College in partnership with Ashburians from the Kitigan Zibi Community (MacGregor Family and Misko ’17), the Kitigan Zibi Director of Education (Anita Tenasco) as well as liaison with partners at University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The Kitigan Zibi Band Council approved this acknowledgment for our use in October 2021. The statement and approval will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Message from Norman Southward Head of School

The 2021-22 school year concluded with a sense of optimism in the air as the fuller student experience advanced positively and our school closing events allowed us to come together again in a more traditional way. The Class of 2022 completed IB examinations inperson after a two year hiatus with successful results well ahead of the global average as graduates were placed in an impressive range of university programs and destinations in Canada, the US, the UK and further abroad.

I am proud of the perseverance and support our faculty and staff showed towards our students over the year, and for the general resilience of students as varying levels of pandemic disruption persisted. We are grateful for the cooperation of our community in adhering to various measures, particularly given our unique school composition of junior, senior, and boarding students and staff, studying, working, and living on campus.

Our parent and alumni community remained very supportive of the College with annual giving, 1891 Day and the Ashbury Ball proving to be highly successful. Support for both capital projects and improvements, as well as financial assistance, was evident once again as our campus facilities support teaching and learning and access through FA increased to just over 10% of students.

The Pluralism Circle was established as an advisory

group to inform and monitor the advancement of the pluralism recommendations. This multi-constituent group collaborated with the consultants and community partners such as the Global Centre for Pluralism and community leaders in Kitigan Zibi. Our work in pluralism remains a continuum.

It has been another extraordinary year, managing through the pandemic and global events which seem to each touch our own community in some unique way. Our strategic plan Together Towards – Ensemble vers 2025 remains as relevant as ever as we navigate the challenges and opportunities before our remarkable school community.

Je souhaite addresser mes remerciements à tous nos partenaires pour une autre année scolaire exceptionelle.

Message from Kevin Pidgeon Chair, Board of Governors

As it has been yet another turbulent period in the world and in education due to the lingering effects of the Pandemic, and I would like to express gratitude to the Leadership Team and the entire staff of the College, for their continued tenacity in keeping the school life as normal as possible, given the circumstances. The College has done an exceptional job in continuing to provide a world class experience for our community during very challenging times for all. In addition to strong academic programs, it was great to see the vibrance

of our school displayed with of all of the outdoor activities, including all of the sports teams around the beautiful Ashbury College campus. With a Campus Optimization Review well underway, we are always looking at ways in which we can better use the space on and around the campus, including the sports fields and their surfaces, and managing the high level of demand for families from around our capital and world to attend Ashbury. The Properties and Buildings Committee will continue to provide support in reviewing options for the maintenance and overall betterment of the campus and once again, this year, the Finance Committee and Ashbury’s Finance team have done

a tremendous job of managing the finances of the College despite the uncertain economic conditions. Fundraising efforts have proved successful in supporting school programs including the financial assistance support priorities of the Ashbury College Foundation.

My mandate as Chair of the Ashbury Board of Governors is coming to an end and, as such, I would like to thank the board for their tremendous support and guidance. Although the past two years, as Chair, have been very different, I am truly grateful for the incredible knowledge, experience, conviction, and support that the Board of Governors has provided. The exemplary leadership that our previous Chair, Lori O’Neill, provided was the best example that

I could have received, to form my direction, as I assumed the position. Looking forward, I am truly excited for the next two years, as we welcome Dr. Melissa Forgie, as our incoming Chair.

Message from Hugh Scott ’88 Chair, Foundation Board

Ashbury College is a non-profit organization and a registered Canadian charity, driven by its mission to inspire students in a dynamic learning environment as intellectually curious, compassionate and responsible global citizens. When I see the dedication of Ashbury’s educators, leadership, coaches, and staff, and the remarkable talent and strength of character across alumni of all ages, coupled with the boundless potential of current students, I am firm in my belief that Ashbury is not a needy organization, but indeed a deserving one.

As at June 30, 2022, the Ashbury College Endowment achieved a yearend value of $15.5 million. As the custodian of the Ashbury College Endowment fund, the Foundation Board oversees a diversified

portfolio and seeks to minimize the impact of market fluctuations. Through generous support from Ashbury donors and prudent oversight of the endowment, Ashbury surpassed its goal of providing 10% of current students with needsbased financial assistance at an average of 50% of fees. More than 12% of current students are now benefiting from needs-based financial assistance. This, in turn, benefits the full community.

Donors across the Ashbury community responded to the call to establish a new bursary, the ProbitasVirtus-Comitas Bursary, designated for students from marginalized, underrepresented, or Indigenous communities, launched on Ashbury’s second annual 1891 Day (day of giving). More than $225,000 was raised in a single day to support bursaries and student programs. I am moved by the generosity and thoughtfulness of so many.

Thank you to all who supported Ashbury College Foundation this year.

Pluralism Recommendations

In the summer of 2020, Ashbury’s Pluralism project was started to ensure the inclusive, safe and respectful environment that we seek for all in our community. This has been a collective effort involving over 80 students, staff, alumni, parents and board members working on five design teams focused on various aspects of school life. The design teams were organised into the following groups: People, Programs, Education, Spaces and Culture and each team provided research and suggestions that relate to their focus area.

The project has produced a series of recommendations for near- and long-term suggestions that could be implemented to better encourage a welcoming and inclusive environment at the school. Many of the action items recommended by the Pluralism project are already in motion as we continue to engage meaningfully with pluralism in this academic year. Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who contributed to Ashbury’s Pluralism Recommendations.

The full document, including recommendations and a list of volunteers, is available at ashbury.ca/ diversity-and-inclusion.
