Internships Internship 501 is an unpaid, credit-baring academic course required for all ASCTE seniors. (All 28 ASCTE course credits must be earned prior to internship placement.) Who will intern? All ASCTE Seniors will take Internship 501 - an academic course earning a grade and course credit. Where will I intern? ASCTE will assign internship 501 placement to one of our Educational Partners, such as DEVCOM, Deloitte, Raytheon, and others. The list of partners who will host ASCTE interns will vary each academic year. When will my internship begin? If you started ASCTE as a Sophomore, your Internship 501 placement would be in the Spring Semester upon completing the 400-level courses in the Fall Semester. These 15-week internships will begin in mid-January and end in April of each year. If you started ASCTE as a Freshman, the Internship 501 placement would be 24 weeks assigned by ASCTE, covering Fall, Winter, and Spring Terms. Year-long placements will begin in September and end in April of each year. Do I have to come to school at the beginning of the school year if my internship doesn't start until September? Yes. All students are required to be present at school when they are not attending their internship for any reason other than illness. May I change my internship host agency once it is assigned? No. Only ASCTE can change your placement.
Will ASCTE know what I am working on during my internship? ASCTE Internship 501 Supervisors (school employees) will visit and meet with students and their assigned industry site supervisor weekly. *May I find my own internship host agency? No, all students will be assigned to a participating agency. Note: Students may not be assigned to intern at a host agency where immediate family members are employed. How many internship placements will I have? Students will have one placement; however, the host agencies may provide students the opportunity to work in different areas during that placement. Will I be required to attend Internship 501 through school breaks and holidays? No, students will not have to work through breaks and holidays. They will adhere to ASCTE's scheduled school holidays and vacations. What should I wear to my internship assignment? What to Wear: Business Casual ( daily), no jeans Boys: Collared Shirts Slacks Girls Collared Shirts Slacks or Skirts Dresses If I complete a summer internship, do I still have to do the academic Internship 501? Yes. Summer internships cannot replace the required academic internship. * There is a company I would really like to complete my internship with; may I contact them directly? No, all academic internships will be assigned to one of the participating agencies. However, students are encouraged to reach out and apply for summer internships independent of ASCTE. How can I find out about summer work/internships? Several companies will send ASCTE information for students to apply for summer jobs. These
can be found on students' field experience CANVAS under summer opportunities. Keep in mind most companies require students to be at least 16 years of age. Will ASCTE help me with a summer internship? ASCTE does not provide summer internship assistance beyond postings in the "ASCTE WEEKLY" and CANVAS. Students desiring a summer internship must apply independently. How will colleges view the internship? The internship is a required course for ASCTE. Many colleges and universities require an internship for many majors and are acquainted with its value. Keep in mind that ASCTE students will have all required high school credits for admissions into college. Am I expected to work from 9-5 Monday through Friday? No. Internships are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. -to 2:00 p.m. Students will come to school each morning and depart for their internships at 8:45 a.m. Students are required to return to campus by 2:15 daily. Will I have school on Friday? All students are required to come to school on Fridays. How will I get to my internship? Students will be allowed to drive to their internships from ASCTE; students without cars will be provided transportation by ASCTE. How will I eat my meals during an internship? ASCTE will provide the students with meals during an internship. Students will pick up their boxed lunch each morning from the cafe. The meal fee remains the same. Will I be able to take AP courses during internship? Yes. seniors will be able to take offered AP courses during the first block or sixth block. May I enroll in early college or dual enrollment during my internship term? Yes. If you enroll in a dual enrollment class, you will be provided time to work on that coursework during the Friday school day. If you enroll for a land-based course for early college at a local university, you must register for either online or land-based classes that begin at 3:00 or later. Procedures for dual enrollment or early college may be found in the Office of Student Services. May I miss internship due to a college visit? Interns should schedule college visits for Fridays. Two (2) excused absences are permitted during the internship assignment; students should make every effort to schedule Friday visits.
Mentorships What should I expect from the ASCTE Field Experience Course? As part of the ASCTE Field Experience course, your student will have weekly chats with an industry mentor who works for one of ASCTE's education partners. Who are the Industry Education Partners? Partners include, but are not limited to, governmental agencies, industry, and higher education institutions that support the ASCTE mission, vision, and strategic plan. What can students expect in this course? During this course, students will develop their professional portfolio under the supervision of the Field Experience Coordinator with weekly guidance and support from the assigned mentor. How are class sessions conducted? All sessions are virtual and will include an ASCTE instructor with the ability to view all computer screens and the ability to pop in and out of the sessions.
What kind of Platform will be used? Government installations will use the "TEAMS" platform. Other agencies will use ZOOM on Google Meet. Once you are in the course, the instructor will inform you of your assigned Platform.
