Thank you for supporting artworxLA and for celebrating 23 years of engaging arts education for our county’s most vulnerable teenagers.

We work to link our county’s considerable resources to our students who do not have access to all that our county has to offer. We work with students at highest risk of dropping out of high school and reengage them in their education through the arts.

Our students have struggled in their young lives and have dropped out of school because of boredom, lack of support structures, are pregnant and parenting, are on probation, or have been expelled. Yet, they are full of potential and the arts are a powerful way to re-engage their curiosities, to re-boot their imaginations, and re-connect them to a more expansive community of resources.

Through artworxLA, our students who dropped out are now presenting their artwork this year at UCLA, the Chinese American Museum with The Confucius Institute, and the LA River. They are participating in summer scholarships for high school students at our partner institutions Otis, Art Center and UCLA. They are graduating and launching into productive adult lives.

This work takes a community of supporters, and we are grateful to you for walking with us to support our teenagers.

Moby HONOREE honorees

Singer, songwriter, DJ and photographer Moby has been making music since he was 9 years old. He started out playing classical guitar and then went on to play with seminal Connecticut hardcore punk group ‘the vatican commandoes’ when he was 13. He started dj’ing after leaving college, and was a fixture in the late 80’s new york house and hip-hop scenes.

He released his first single, ‘go’ in 1991(listed as one of rolling stones best records of all time), and has been making albums ever since. His own records have sold over 20,000,000 copies worldwide, and he’s also produced and remixed scores of other artists, including David Bowie, Metallica, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, among others.

He has toured tirelessly, playing well over 3,000 concerts in his career, and has also had his music used in hundreds of different films, including ‘Heat’, ‘Any Given Sunday’, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, and ‘The Beach’, among others.

Moby works closely with a variety of different charities, including the humane society and the institute for music and neurologic function, and in 2007 he launched ‘mobygratis’, which provides free music for independent filmmakers.

Moby’s latest album ‘innocents’, his most collaborative project to date, featuring Wayne Coyne, Cold Specks, Damien Jurado, Mark Lanegan, and Skylar Grey, was released in October 2013.

Moby is internationally respected for his groundbreaking music, his insightful photography, and his support of independent filmmakers via his mobygratis.com website. artworxLA celebrates his creative spirit and his support of our students as they voice their own creativity.

Raymond Leon Roker HONOREE Executive Producer, Goldenvoice | Founder, URB.com

Roker’s lifestyle marketing firm Rebel Organization successfully oversaw youth and multicultural activations around the launch and rollout of Toyota’s pioneering Scion line of cars. More recently, as a content strategist and consultant, he worked for Red Bull Media House managing the US launch of The Red Bulletin magazine and tablet app. He currently heads up content strategy and development for Goldenvoice, a top festival and concert promoter and producer of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

Roker’s interest as a storyteller also touches photography, design and writing. He is currently producing and directing his first documentary pilot. Roker is also a longtime board member of artworxLA.

While California’s graduation rate reached 80% for the first time in 2014, the fact remains that Graduation rates for Los Angeles’ continuation high school students can be as low as 10%* in some communities. These students are disengaged and struggling with overwhelming life circumstances that push school attendance far down their priority lists. Without a diploma, they will earn $500,000 less over a lifetime and are six times more likely to go to jail—82% of U.S. inmates are dropouts. The negative effects extend well beyond these students and their families, as the state loses $1 billion in lost tax revenues and incurs $1 billion in incarceration costs. artworxLA is having a transformative impact on the L.A. community, as more and more students are reversing course from dropping out to achieving graduation and imagining a stable future where their creative talents are valued. *SOURCE “LA Unified Reports Big Rise in its Graduation Rate” LA Times October 2014

A Ladder to Climb Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of artsbased dropout prevention programs to approximately 650 students enrolled at 25 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, arts venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

Hollywood Media Arts Academy A Partnership between artworxLA and the Los Angeles County Office of Education Established in 2010, The Hollywood Media Arts Academy is about to complete its fifth academic year.

As artworxLA’s programmatic and administrative hub, HMAA continues to grow and evolve as a model for intensive arts education in the alternative high school setting. HMAA’s arts program follows Career Technical Education standards in the Media, Arts, and Technology strand. Students participate weekly in artworxLA’s ladder of programs as well as an additional eight hours of arts programming where they are studying: Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Video Production and Editing, Music Performance and Production, and Animation.

A dedicated part-time media arts instructor focuses on digital content so that students have practical knowledge and experience with 21st-century creative skills. In 2014, HMAA was selected by LACOE to be the focus of the State of California’s Linked Learning initiative. Guest speakers from creative industry inspire students to seek out creative careers and expose them to the range of jobs in the arts in Los Angeles.

artworxLA provides weekly art workshops in 25 alternative high school classrooms from Arleta to Lynwood, Monterey Park to Mar Vista. Inspired by the programs and exhibitions at cultural partner institutions such as The Chinese American Museum and The Fowler Museum at UCLA, our students work with professional artists to create new art, then present or perform their final works at these world-renowned cultural partner institutions.

We are proud to serve the alternative education students of Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD), Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), and Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD).

Company employees attend our annual career day in the spring at the artworxLA office in Hollywood. Employees will join a panel of representatives from creative careers in Los Angeles including fashion, architecture, toy design, filmmaking, music production, game design, marketing, visual arts to share with the students their personal career paths and details of their profession.

Offer the opportunity for an advanced student(s) to go on set and observe first-hand the workings of a production.

Guest speakers Company employees come to artworxLA’s Hollywood Media Arts Academy and talk to the students about their career pathway. This is a more in-depth presentation, as the employee(s) is the featured speaker during a class session.

Internships Provide paid or unpaid internships for artworxLA students who are ready to succeed in the workplace.

Internships offer an invaluable opportunity for our students to gain access the creative industries and a look into the actual jobs that exist within the sector.

artworxLA produces four public events throughout the year. artworxLA works within Los Angeles’ alternative education system to exclusively serve teens (ages 14-18) at highest risk of dropping out of high school. Given a second chance, they come to alternative schools because of failing grades, behavioral issues, a history of incarceration, or expulsion.

Working through the arts empowers them to achieve new positive identities – high school graduate, artist, college student, employee, community member, leader.

artworxLA works with this population because they are the most vulnerable. Art is a powerful tool to re-engage our students’ curiosity and their link to school and community.

Our art program increases student retention, graduation rates, and inspires them to envision creative and productive futures.

Jasmine Diaz graduated from Angelus Plaza College Preparatory High School in 2007, during which time she was also a MOCA Apprentice. She has been a student at Merced College, and is transferring to California State University, Stanislaus to study biology and environmental sciences to focus on soil and/or water treatment. She has merged her interests in art, science and social justice through her involvement as an arts and community advocate, facilitating workshops at the Merced LGBT Center and Merced College Community Services — College for Kids.

Idonis Frutos graduated high school from Destiny Girls Academy in 2013. As a long-term participant of artworxLA programming, she completed a fashion residency at Otis College of Art and Design, which inspired her to pursue further studies in fashion. Idonis is currently in her fourth quarter at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Downtown Los Angeles.

Jasmine Guevara graduated from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy in 2014, and is completing her first year at Pasadena City College. She plans to transfer to California State University to continue her focus in photography, an art form that she developed enthusiasm for and skills in while at artworxLA, and which she also pursued at Art Center Saturday High. She completed a fashion residency through artworxLA Advanced Programs, as well as contributed to painting a jazz-themed mural with the artist Asylm in Councilman Curren Price’s district in summer 2014.

Abraham Lizama will graduate in 2015 from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy. As an aspiring musician, he has developed his skills in artworxLA workshops, Street Poets, and the CalArts Summer Art Program. Abraham composes, writes lyrics, plays guitar, and uses Ableton to mix music. He and his fellow band mates, who attend the same school, regularly take advantage of the HMAA studio space to practice their music during breaks and after school. Abraham plans on attending Fullerton Community College before transferring to CalArts.

His experience with artworxLA has been broad-ranging, covering all four levels of programming and multiple disciplines including theater at the Bootleg; dance with Contra-Tiempo Urban Latin Dance Theatre; and photography and graphic design through Art Center. Armed with his first DSLR camera as a teenager, Daniel has actively pursued his dream of becoming a professional photographer and filmmaker, displaying his work at Contact LA at the Brewery Arts Complex and Mercado La Paloma.

Alexis Raygoza graduated in 2014 from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy, where her interest in music and the performing arts rapidly developed through classes at artworxLA and other cultural partners.

She has performed at the Central Library, UCLA, and the Skirball Cultural Center as part of Level 1 Public Presentations. Alex participated in a residency with Street Poets, attended Grammy Camp, and has interned at the Center Theater Group. In 2014, she was a featured student speaker at the artworxLA Annual Evening of Art, and is an active participant in the Alumni-Mentorship Program.

Jazmin Robles

who graduated high school in 2009, is pursuing a career in culinary arts, and is currently a student at Le Cordon Bleu. With a family background in special events and parties, Jazmin enjoys celebrations with delicious food. One of her best memories of being involved with artworxLA was the opportunity to attend the Summer of Art at Otis College of Art and Design. She states, “artworxLA helped me to improve as a person, and to guide me in many ways to progress in life. The program motivated me, and now I won’t ever stop.”

Erick Rojas will graduate from Central High School-Cypress Branch in 2015. He participated in a residency with the Street Poets, and also completed the CalArts Summer Art Program in creative writing in 2014. He has interned throughout the academic year at the Center Theater Group, learning behind-the-scenes the roles and responsibilities in theater. Passionate about art and activism, Erick joined artworxLA’s Board as the Student Representative in 2014.
