Thank you for joining us at Gala30 as we celebrated artworxLA’s 30th anniversary! The evening at the Skirball Cultural Center felt magical as we gathered together, reconnected after a two year in-person pause due to the pandemic and recognized the incredible work of our students.

It was truly an honor to have our founder, Cynthia Campoy Brophy, share along with artworxLA alumni, Gabriel Perez, the impact that our community has had on over 15,000 students over the years. It was also a gift to have Rory Pullens, former Executive Director of the Arts Programs at Los Angeles Unified School District, to MC the night and share some inspiring and challenging words.

This being my first Gala as artworxLA’s newest leader, I was most inspired by several things. First, seeing our students making art in our two art installations during the event. It was fun to watch them at work as well as watching them connect with one another and our staff as they made art for our guests to enjoy. Second was watching the two Little Docs of our current student/alumni Board members, Nayven Alcantar and Jasmine Guevara: to hear their stories and see their resilience, passion and drive was truly inspiring.

Lastly, it was such an honor to meet many of you, who have invested in the mission of providing excellent arts education to some of the most overlooked and underserved students in our city. To hear of our passion as a main reason as to why you choose to invest in our students was humbling.

GALA30 PRESENTERS

Cynthia Campoy Brophy | artworxLA Founder Cynthia Campoy Brophy founded artworxLA (then The HeArt Project) in 1992 to address LA teenagers’ lack of arts education programs. The program began at Para Los Niños (a community center in Skid Row). It soon grew into the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Options program, which serves alternative education students. In 2002, The HeArt Project was approached by the Los Angeles County Office of Education to work with its alternative schools, and it expanded to 15 sites. By 2008, the program was in 25 sites, and in 2010 a partnership with LACOE established Los Angeles’ first arts academy for alternative education students, the Hollywood Media Arts Academy. In 2012, we went through a re-branding process to convey who we are and what we do more effectively. Our philosophy and methodology are the same, but we have changed our name from The HeArt Project to artworxLA to describe better the work we do and the beliefs that guide it.

Rory Pullens | Master of Ceremonies Rory Pullens has spent his life engaged in making a positive social impact. For the past five years, Pullens has been an entertainment executive, including Pull & Row, his creative management company that currently produces underserved minority creatives in television, film, and stage projects for studios and streaming platforms. Before that, Pullens was the Senior Executive Director of Arts Education for the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he grew alliances with community arts organizations to support the work of arts education. He involved LAUSD to forge a deeper relationship with artworxLA to help fill the gap in serving alternative school students and help stem the dropout rate.

DESIGN + MEDIA ARTS ACADEMY Central High School - LAUSD artworxLA’s Design and Media Arts Academy is a LAUSD multi-site, district-wide dropout prevention and credit recovery school. The DMAA welcomes all students into a safe and supportive academic environment focused on preparing students for college and career readiness while supporting them in becoming selfmotivated, contributing members of our global community.

The DMAA offers amplified Level 1 programming, preparing students for media arts-based technical careers.

Students earn certificates from Career Technical Education (CTE) classes, with specializations like Production and Managerial Arts, preparing them for careers like: • • • •

Q: Tell me a little bit about your project?

A: I chose the character from Jujutsu Kaisen because he’s a really cool character and I wanted to challenge myself, and I wanted to go beyond my expectations to see what I can do and what I’m capable of.

Q: Earlier you described some of your favorite workshops, please share your favorite parts and any challenges you faced?

A: We did flip and roll animations which was very interesting because it was something I haven’t done before. I realized my project from thoughts to animations and saw that I was able to make some well and others not too well and enjoyed the learning process. And then we also did 3D scenery with paper, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete it but it was cool to learn about it!

Q: Was there anything that you learned about yourself from these projects?

A: Yes, I feel like I am now more vocal, I enjoy doing my work now, it kept me engaged, and it helped me bring my ideas to life.

Q: Do you feel like this has made you want to engage more with art making?

A: YES! It was something I found interesting before, but I never really got to do and this helped me out by allowing me to do that and it is something not I do not regret and I enjoy.

Q: What was your favorite part about your project?

A: My favorite part was mixing the colors together to make newcolors happen. I was able to paint sunsets and environmental landscapes because they look cool to me.

Q: Do you see yourself exploring this medium?

A: Yes, because it adds more to details to paintings in general.

Q: Do you see yourself pursuing this as a career?

A: I want to become a tattoo artist, and studying watercolor painting has allowed me to mix different colors to create new ones, I want to explore how watercolor and tattooing can come together.

Q: What else are you interested in learning about in your workshops?

A: I want to learn more about portraiture and like how to draw eyes, and more human things like faces and noses to help me develop as an artist and tattoo artist.

Q: Do you think that learning about film and animation has inspired you to go into a career in film making or learning it as a hobby?

A: I have thought about it as a career, but more so in terms of car designs and car wrap-pings and I think now I want to create my own designs.

Design and Media Arts Academy

This was my first time working on filmmaking. Experience wise, I learned so much the way we directed our own film in just one day was so crazy! One challenge that I had with this experience is that sometimes I would forget to say action or forget when to say cut. It felt so real and it was fun, the experience that my teacher gave me to actually be able to direct, and write my own film, and meet real actors, and work with a director of photography. be the best I could make it.

I especially appreciated working with a mentor who was really fun as he helped me better organize my story. And over all this experience was very cool and fun. In class we read each other’s scripts and gave one another input and feedback on them and that was nice. Writing the story was one of my biggest challenges and getting it how I wanted it to be. Also when working with people I tend to get shy so I had to overcome that and have some kind of confidence in myself. I can also say the retakes of filming were hard for me because I wanted the finished cut to be the best I could make it.

Design and Media Arts “I felt like the format of the short film was kind of challenging, but my mentors made it easy for me.

We were working on a program called Celtx and it helps you format short films in a better way. That was challenging part, just formatting it. It challenged my thought process more on trying to get my story out. So there were some challenging things but my mentors made it very easy for me.

Writing with somebody else was very helpful, made me think more made me expand my thoughts and visualize the moments of what I was trying to write down or say to her. Yeah, she helped me a lot.

It helped me a lot so next time I do make a short film I know what I’m getting into. The acting is my favorite part because now my story is being displayed.

The acting brings it all out so the acting’s my favorite part. And I like the editing also. To look back at [all the takes and scenes] edit mistakes and just learn from it. You can learn a lot too in the editing. It makes you even think more about [the directing part] because you’d be all like, “Oh you did this, that, yeah next time, I could do this.”

I’m really interested in a job in animation. I would like to be a voice actor. I’m really interested in voice acting. I got influenced in anime and the voices sound so cool behind the character. It’s just really interesting.

I’ve never filmed anything before this. I’ve written stories before but this is a new experience on filming. I like this experience, I like the process of it. And I’m learning from it so I do like it a lot.

I had a whole story already written down, and my mentor like, exceeded the limits that I went to.

She made it even better and made me think about better outcomes, raising the stakes on the story.

Yeah she opened up a lot of ideas for me.

I like what I learned. I liked the process of it and the progress that I made. It was a great experience.

They helped me a lot with it [Michelle Silver, Teaching Artist and Stephen Hardy, Workshop Coordinator] I couldn’t have done this by myself. I really enjoyed every moment of it.

Michelle breaks down complicated parts and make it so simple and just helps you a lot with it. Like you can overthink a situation on your short film and she’ll just give you an idea to help it and diminish the overthinking.

The advice I have is to just be patient. It’s a process on making arts and if you rush it the quality is just going to go down. You gotta be patient with it so you can have that quality high. Where can you go without patience? Everything is time.”
