Greetings from artworxLA, We are grateful for your support during Gala29 + Auction, one of our most important campaigns of the year. We celebrated from May 8th through May 14th. On Saturday May 8th, we watched our Level 2 students present music and visual arts projects based on poetry, activism, and personal heroes. We danced together from May 10th through May 13th on Instagram Live with groovy DJ sets by Ale Cohen from dublab, Glenn Red from La Junta, Mamabear from dublab, and degruvme from La Junta. On Friday May 14th, we celebrated the close of Gala29 with artworxLA Executive Director, Shelby Williams-Gonzalez in conversation with artworxLA students, and we honored actress/comedian Michelle Buteau and writer/curator/cultural historian Josh Kun. “Being in the music workshop from artworxLA has been a blast. I enjoyed it so much to the point where I didn’t want to sleep! The special guests, Daniel Soto and Ale Cohen, taught us how to look from new perspectives. Henry Webster taught us different ways to read beats and how to make our own. He also taught us how to explore different styles of music. Now that it’s over we’re leaving with the knowledge of how to make music. Michelle Buteau - Honoree Born in New Jersey to Caribbean parents, actress/comedian Michelle Buteau brings her unique perspective and big personality to stage and screen. Michelle is one of the stars of the TV remake of FIRST WIVES CLUB on BET+. She is also the host of the popular Netflix series THE CIRCLE which returns to Netflix in April. Other film and TV credits include scene-stealing scenes in ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE,AWKWAFINA IS NORA FROM QUEENS, RUSSIAN DOLL, SOMEONE GREAT and the upcoming MARRY ME with Jennifer Lopez. Michelle’s one-hour comedy special WELCOME TO BUTEAUPIA is streaming on Netflix and recently won the Critics’ Choice Award. Simon & Schuster published her autobiographical book of essays SURVIVAL OF THE THICKEST last December.

Josh Kun - Honoree Josh Kun is a writer, curator, and cultural historian. He is an author and editor of several books, including Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America, The Tide Was Always High: The Music of Latin America in Los Angeles, and Double Vision: The Photography of George Rodriguez, as well as a trio of books based on the special collections (sheet music, menus, autographs) of the Los Angeles Public Library. As a curator and artist, he has worked with SFMOMA, The Getty Foundation, California African American Museum, Vincent Price Art Museum, Grammy Museum, ASU Art Museum, among others. He recently completed the series “10 Songs for 12 Sunsets” with the Getty Research Institute and this fall will debut a new project for the Prospect New Orleans art triennial. He chairs the board of Alma Backyard Farms and serves on the boards of Miry’s List and dublab, among others. MISSION artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis by engaging students in a long-term, sequential arts program offering a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals, and flourish as creative adults. We achieve this by: • • •

LADDER AND PROGRAMS Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 800 students enrolled in 26 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, art venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

DESIGN + MEDIA ARTS ACADEMY artworxLA’s Design and Media Arts Academy, located at Central High School, is a LAUSD multisite, district-wide dropout prevention and credit recovery school. We welcome all students into a safe and supportive academic environment. artworxLA believes that all students have the potential to succeed academically and in society if given proper access! Our mission is to prepare students for college and career readiness and to support our youth in becoming self-motivated, contributing members of our global community. At the Design and Media Arts Academy, artworxLA offers amplified Level 1 programming that prepares students for technical careers that center around media arts. Career Technical Education (CTE) classes are taught there and offer a Production and Managerial Arts Pathways for students to pursue. With CTE certificates earned upon graduation, students leave our academy prepared for careers like: • Sound Engineering Technicians • Reporters and Correspondents • Set and Exhibition Designers • Film and Video Editors + creative careers in filmmaking, podcasting, photography, advertising, and more!

A YEAR OF LEARNINGOUR STUDENTS’ STORIES
Santos Santos started taking Level 1 workshops at artworxLA through Central High School - Silverlake two years ago. He has since completed Level 2 residencies in Music Production, Visual Arts, and Fashion Design, as well as Creative Career Skills workshops. He also became an artworxLA student intern and was accepted to receive an ArtCenter Teens summer scholarship for ArtCenter Extension for Teens course in filmmaking last summer. Santos continues to participate in Advanced Programs and he is currently taking a workshop in Poetry+ Design in connection with Southern California Library as well as leadership and life skills classes. He is currently a Senior and is expected to graduate in June.
Gibson Level 1 artworxLA student who participated in the theme, “Our Liberty is Bound Together” said, “The program was a good way to distract from all the catastrophes that are happening right now. An escape and a creative outlet. One thing I learned is that art doesn’t always come out the way you imagine it initially, and often times what the artist sees as a mistake is what gives the piece character.”

Yohara Level 1 artworxLA student, speaks about the positive emotional effects the workshop had on her last fall, “Going to the (virtual) classes, I was like, this is really cool, and then I tried all of the assignments. I can see myself doing this in my free time. I didn’t know art was a mixture of everything, before this class, I just thought it was like perfect painting. At first you might think this class is boring, but it’s actually not. Once you pay attention to it, put your mind into it, I feel art can be very relaxing because like everybody is going through something especially during this pandemic. It’s harder and I feel this can be a good time for you to relax and get “you” time.”

Gieneyra’s Path Her journey as an artworxLA student and current alumnae
Through artworxLA’s multi-level programs, students across L.A. country are provided the necessary access to explore their passions and become re-engaged in academic pursuits. Gieneyra, an artworxLA student who participated in its programs for three years, felt the organization had a real impact on expanding her possible career paths. During the Summer of 2020, through partnerships with the USC School of Architecture, Otis College of Art and Design, and ArtCenter College of Design, Gieneyra and eleven other students were able to participate in a special Comic Book Illustration program with ArtCenter faculty instructor, Steven Weissman. She said this about her involvement, “I loved it. I felt stuck at first but it was very fulfilling to my creative energy. I’m really proud of what I made, and I want to make more comic stuff.” On track to graduate later this year, Gieneyra is looking forward to enrolling at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena to study animation. Of her cumulative artworxLA experience, she says, “[It]’s given me the chance to explore and discover my love for storytelling and animation, and now I’m taking the steps to make those artforms my career”.

Oscar Reyes artworxLA’s student-alumni board representative “I currently go to Central High School Design and Media Arts Academy, and there I have taken many courses in music, podcasting, visual arts, and film. The Design and Media Arts Academy is a unique school because we get artworxLA’s classes twice a week and a CTE pathway. I’m going to be honest, if it wasn’t for this school I probably would have fallen behind or dropped out, and so I’m glad to work with them. They make my learning experience fun and engaging!”

Virtual Wine Tasting Mixer | William Robert Wines Vineyard | March 17, 2021 artworxLA hosted an evening of fun and wine tasting (from a distance) this year and raised funds to support our innovative remote-learning programming. Under the guidance of professional winemaker, Jeff Strekas, and sommelier/ artworxLA board member, Lisa Kring, these guests were introduced to the process of winemaking as they tried a selection of different varieties from William Robert Estate Wines, located in Paso Robles, California. It is with many thanks that we recognize artworxLA board member, Grant Kirkpatrick, and his wife Shaya for organizing this event and donating their wine to make this night of community and learning possible!
