The student displays satisfactory commitment and attainment of technical skills and knowledge. Professional behaviour is adequate but may be unpredictable. The tutor often has to repeat the same notes or feedback, and the student is defensive when receiving constructive criticism. Understanding of character, musicality and style is perfunctory, with few moments of creativity and little connection to the material. Application of technical skills, creativity and imagination is basic, characterized by generality and a lack of imagination. The student is unable to focus for long periods in class, rehearsal or assessments. The contribution to the ensemble is at best basic, and the student can demonstrate a lack of sensitivity in their work with others. FAIL 30-39% Students may fail to meet the standard required for a number of reasons, the most common of which are likely to be: The student does not appear to understand the need for a professional attitude. Concentration in class, rehearsal and performance is poor and the student is easily distracted. Evidence suggests that the work lacks planning and research. The student does not implement tutor’s notes or feedback, and tends to block or argue with constructive criticism. The student fails to display a basic application of technical skills, creativity or imagination. The work demonstrates little or no understanding of character, musicality or style, and is unconnected to the material. The student shows no interest in working with or supporting other members of the group. FAIL under 30% Marks awarded in this band will reflect an unacceptable standard of work. The student fails to display a proper understanding of the need for research, and concentration and preparation are both consistently poor. The student ignores tutor’s feedback, and reacts badly to constructive criticism. The student fails to display a basic application of technical skills, creativity or imagination and has no flair, focus or expressiveness in their work. Character, musicality and style are lacking, and there is no discernible connection to the material. The student is insensitive to the needs of other members of the group, and their attitude and behaviour is well below the expected standard.
