You continue your training in singing, maintaining your skills at a professional level.

Aims

To enable you to sing in musical theatre productions to a professional standard with technical control, safety, confidence, concentration, discipline and energy.

What will I be expected to achieve?

At the conclusion of the module you will be expected to be able to: Skills • demonstrate presentational skills for professional performance • protect and sustain your voice in performance • control singing technique in performance • use a range of singing styles and techniques in performance • perform a range of songs to suit a variety of audition requirements Knowledge and Understanding • study a song in depth by following the printed instructions in a score • demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of a wide variety of vocal writing and styles • work confidently with the techniques and terminology of professional musical theatre Values and Attitudes • work in an effective and disciplined way as a soloist and as a member of a chorus in performance

Singing Technique

Aims

To enable you to maintain and consolidate vocal standards required by the professional musical theatre, particularly: • a sound vocal technique • the ability to sing with confidence and expression, regardless of the size of the voice • the ability to understand how to protect and sustain the voice.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component you will be expected to demonstrate, to a standard required by the professional musical theatre, the ability to:

Skills • use vocal technique with confidence and consistency • follow printed instructions in a score Knowledge and Understanding • an understanding of safe singing

How will I learn?

A sequence of one-to-one singing lessons with continued emphasis on • breath control • posture • vocal placement • diction • intonation

Repertoire

Aims

To enable you to maintain and consolidate your ability, at a level required by the professional musical theatre, to: • perform with confidence a wide range of musical theatre songs • study more complex material in depth • sing with confidence and expression, regardless of the size of the voice • select material which protects and sustains the voice • select material to meet audition requirements for a wide range of musical theatre productions

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component you will be expected to demonstrate to a professional level the ability to: Skills • sing a wide range of songs from the musical theatre repertoire • sing in other styles including jazz, blues, pop and rock • follow printed instructions in a score • attend an audition and to sing, with confidence, to an adequate standard to obtain professional employment Knowledge and Understanding • an understanding of safe singing

Song Workshop

Tutors Various guest directors, singers and musical directors. Tutor led Hours 20 hours

Aims

To enable you to perform a wider variety of songs with increased individuality, clarity, truthfulness and intensity.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component you will be expected to demonstrate, to the level required by professional musical theatre, the ability to: Skills • discover the subtext of a song and make an effective personal response to the lyrics of a song • sustain the narrative of a song effectively and communicate the song clearly • sustain the audience’s interest by increased control of modulation Knowledge andUnderstanding • make appropriate choices of songs for audition

How will I learn?

A sequence of practical classes in which you perform songs to an audience of their tutor group and receive analysis and guidance from the tutors.

Health and Safety

The safe use of the singing voice is central to the individually taught technique and repertoire classes. All rehearsals and performances begin with a vocal warm-up and you are taught how and when to “mark” in rehearsal.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful conclusion of the Singing Module you will be expected to know how to: • prepare and execute suitable vocal warm-up exercises • understand the vocal mechanism • understand how to maintain the condition of the voice and guard and protect it in the future • select repertoire which does not “push” the voice

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on your classwork in the Autumn and Spring terms. Classes will continue in term 3, but will not be included in the assessment scheme.

What do I have to do to pass Year 3 Singing?

You are required to pass all three components.

How and when will I get feedback?

You will receive verbal and written feedback on your achievement in singing for each of the public productions.

You are required to pass all three components. *The overall mark for the module is calculated as an average of the aggregate marks for the three components. The Year 3 Skills module is given a weighting of 20% in the calculation of your overall degree mark.
