Year 2 Dance

Outline

You will further develop your technical ability, creativity, stamina and musicality in a variety of different dance techniques. Work will become progressively more challenging, focusing on extending your range and strengthening your technique in the core musical theatre dance repertoire of jazz, ballet and tap, supported by pas de deux classes and underpinned by a supervised fitness regime.

Overall Aims

• to further develop your competence and confidence in jazz, ballet, tap and pas de deux • to further develop an understanding of the theory and history of dance in musical theatre • to further develop an understanding of the human body to avoid injuries and develop technique and freedom of expression • to further develop the relationship between acting, singing and dance

What will I be expected to achieve?

Jazz

to enable you to develop, to a standard required by the professional musical theatre, your ability to use: • a wide range of technical and performance dance skills • a technically and stylistically varied dance vocabulary • acting skills through dance • an understanding of Luigi Jazz technique

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component, you will be expected to be able to demonstrate progress in: Skills • technical ability, alignment, placement, balance, co-ordination, flexibility, control and fluidity • the ability to communicate character and motivation, sensitivity, emotion, concentration and energy in a variety of dance styles • the ability to dance at audition to a standard high enough to obtain professional employment

How will I learn?

You will participate in a sequence of practical classes based on body mechanics and conditioning and influenced by classical ballet.

Term 1

Ballet

How will I learn?

You will participate in a sequence of practical classes building on the work in Year 1 Ballet classes.

Term 1

Tap

Pas de Deux

Aims

To enable you to acquire technical and performance skills in Pas de Deux. To enable you to apply taught skills in choreography.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component, you will be expected to be able to demonstrate progress in: Skills • Pas de Deux technique • acquisition and application of performance skills whilst working with a partner • the ability to tell a story through Pas de Deux Knowledge and Understanding • awareness of the subtlety of Pas de Deux lifts and styles • understanding of safety in Pas de Deux to ensure an injury free career

How will I learn?

You will participate in a sequence of technique and workshop classes in a variety of pas de deux styles and techniques, including: Safety in lifting Preparation for lifting Balancing Basic lifts leading to more advanced lifts Grips, support & holds Communication, focus, expression and eye contact Synchronicity and complicity Dance vocabulary and technical terms Variety of musical theatre lifting styles from the 1920’s to the present

Fitness, Health and Safety

The Dance Department continues to emphasise the importance of maintaining fitness, health and safety as a priority.

Jazz

Continuing from Year 1 • The warm up in the jazz class evolves in intensity and difficulty as the year progresses. • You may dance barefoot, wear a foot thong or jazz shoes so that you can feel and use the floor. • Suitable supportive clothing must be worn. • Depending on the tutor’s style, the warm-up may be either gradual and accumulative or may commence with aerobic activity. Warm-ups are monitored and are highly effective at warming up the body in preparation for more vigorous activity. • Great importance is placed on strengthening and warming up areas of potential weakness. These areas include the back, groin, ankles and knees. Particular care is given to warming up the upper back, neck and weaker joints.

Ballet

• The importance of warm up and warm down continues to be emphasised • You are given safety information with your corrections

Pas De Deux

• You are instructed on the technique of lifting and how to avoid injury to yourself or your partner • Emphasis is placed on trust and placement

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of the Dance Module you should have a developed further detailed understanding of how to:

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding • check dance studio floors before class to ensure that they are in a good condition i.e. not slippery, splintered and have an even surface • wear appropriate clothing for dance class e.g. not to wear jewellery or clothing that may be a danger to you or fellow students • warm up before class or performance to enable the body to perform to its full potential with complete safety • take action in the event of pain and or injury • understand your physical limitations and how to work around them • work back after a holiday • work back after an injury

Fitness, Nutrition and Injury Prevention

Aim

To enable you to understand how to acquire strength and fitness so as to achieve a healthy, fit and injury-free career.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this component you will be expected to demonstrate further development in: Skills • The ability to use basic gym equipment Knowledge and Understanding The understanding of: • How to maintain your health, fitness and safety at all times • the action to take in the event of pain or injury • how to work safely within your physical limitations • the benefits of regular exercise through aerobic activity, strength training, muscular endurance and flexibility • the need to achieve strengthening and toning rather than building bulk muscle • the basics of bone structure, heart rates, aerobic/cardiovascular activity and energy systems • the essentials of good nutrition

How will I learn?

With guidance from the tutor, you will take part in fitness classes designed to help you develop a personal fitness regime. You will take part in a series of workshops and seminars on various issues relating to Health, Safety and Injury Prevention. Each week you are given the opportunity to report any health or injury problems to the tutor.

How will I be assessed?

Monitoring of your progress in each of the assessed components of the dance module is continuous. Tutors inform the Head of Dance immediately if they have any concerns about your level of attainment, discipline or attendance. The purpose of assessment is to enable you and teachers to identify your strengths and weaknesses in the key areas of the programme. The main assessment methods are: • Continuous observation in all Technique classes • Mid and End of Year evaluation in Jazz, Ballet and Tap • End of Year assessment in Jazz, Ballet and Tap • Practical assessment in projects and public performances • Observation of written assignments, tests, notebooks and diaries

Mid and End of Year Classwork

Tutors give students indicative grades half way through the year in mid February and classwork is formally assessed at the end of the year in June. Mid and end of year class work grades are awarded on the basis of the student’s response to, and development through, the process. Assessment is made with reference to the component-specific learning outcomes described in the relevant module and the following general criteria relating to Professional Employment skills • commitment, preparedness for work; self-directed study • concentration; application; personal motivation • receptiveness to the process • ability to accept, and act on, notes and corrections • ability to work within group (listening; sensitivity; responsiveness; generosity; co-operation) • progression: growth and development of skills and knowledge • development of flexibility and spontaneity • capacity to experiment and take risks • development of awareness of the working process

End of year Assessments

At the end of the summer term second year students have formal assessments in jazz, ballet and tap before a panel which may include an external assessor. Assessments include both taught and unseen routines.

What do I have to do to pass?

Students are required to achieve a pass mark of 40% or above in Jazz, Ballet and Tap, and to pass each of the other components. Assessment criteria and grade descriptors can be found at the back of this handbook. Pas de Deux and Fitness, nutrition and injury prevention are marked pass/fail and do not carry any weighting in the calculation of the overall mark for the module. The overall mark for the module is calculated according to the following weightings: Jazz 50% Ballet 35% Tap 15%

How and when will I get feedback on my assessments?

You will receive written feedback on all elements of your dance assessment from each of the four assessors on the panel. You will also have an individual tutorial with the Head of Dance, during which you will receive verbal feedback on your assessments and be given targets to work towards.
