It’s a magical time at the Arts Center as the lights surrounding the building sparkle, and we get ready for our spirited seasonal production, A Christmas Story: The Musical. This excitement was shared during our community-wide Holiday KickOff Festival held on November 19th, where we rang in the season with entertainment, crafts, and food, with many thanks to the Town of Hilton Head Island for their partnership. This was our most wellattended holiday festival ever!
A meaningful seasonal tradition at the Arts Center is the “Tree of Life” in the Theater Lobby, which was started by our cherished Lee family. Each year, it is dedicated in memory of organ donors and in honor of recipients, represented by each angel ornament on the tree.
It is a season of gratitude. We so greatly value the support of those who attend our productions, presentations, educational programs and festivals; our treasured donors; our wonderful volunteers; and the Arts Center staff who work tirelessly to make it all come together.
As we ring in the New Year, we are thrilled for what the upcoming months will bring to our stage! From Ireland’s “Most Exciting Tenor” Emmet Cahill (March 2 & 3), the extraordinary Linda Ronstadt Experience (March 9 & 10), the innovative dance of Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami (March 24), the sensational Country Music duo Twitty & Lynn (April 11), not to mention our winter production of
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner in February. Also, February 11 is our free Taste of Gullah festival, featuring incredible Gullah food, music, arts and crafts and more! Plus, don’t miss attending our Country & Cocktails benefit featuring a Nashville Party Band, amazing food and drink, and a few surprises (March 18).
There’s so much more to come in 2023 (wow – that sounds like a futuristic date in a sci-fi film but it’s here)! We are extremely blessed to be able to create these enriching events with you, our own family of supporters and our visitors.
In the spirit of the season, it’s my wish for all of us to foster kindness, inclusion, and peace as we celebrate all that makes us unique. My warmest wishes to you during the holidays and in the New Year!
From the songwriting team behind the smash-hit Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen, A Christmas Story: The Musical, brings the classic 1983 movie to life on stage in a fresh new way, transforming the classic narrative into a song-and-dance spectacle full of heart.
The Arts Center's holiday production runs from December 7 – 31, and is directed by NYC's Mark Martino (Newsies, White Christmas, Elf, An American in Paris, Kiss Me Kate, and Forever Plaid).
The musical, based on the film which in turn was based on the stories of radio host Jean Shepard, chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker (Nicholas Reed). In fact, he's the most important character in the show, wanting a BB gun for Christmas – an official Red Ryder CarbineAction 200-Shoot Range Model Air Rifle to be precise. Ralphie is told again and again, "you'll shoot your eye out," but he is dogged in his persistence, thinking superior behavior might lead to superior gifts.
An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish.
Martino said, "What makes this show so special is the story is about family and their connection to one another; not to mention it has an infectious score and hilarious script!"
Following a successful Broadway run garnering three 2013 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Joseph Robinette) and Best Original Score (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) along with six Drama Desk nominations, and two Outer Critics Circle nominations, A Christmas Story: The Musical is the perfect way to get you and your family in the spirit of the season. Filled with tap dancing, humor, and the wonder of Christmas, this show should be on everyone's wish list!
For tickets, call the Arts Center box office at (843) 842-ARTS(2787) or visit artshhi.com.
“YOU’D HAVE TO HAVE A GRINCH-SIZED HEART NOT TO FEEL A SMILE SPREADING ACROSS
Many have fond memories of the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, William Rose's screeplay directed by Stanley Kramer. Nominated for ten Academy Awards, it captured two: one for Katharine Hepburn as Best Actress in a Leading Role, and one for Best Original Screenplay.
It was Hepburn's final film playing opposite her beloved Spencer Tracy, and it, of course, provided a stellar showcase for the inimitable talents of the late, great Sidney Poitier.
A common source for a film is a play, but in this case, it took years before the iconic film was given new life in this stage adaptation, written by Todd Kreidler with its first reading in 2007.
Krider's own resume includes having worked with August Wilson on Broadway to develop the final three plays in Wilson's famed American Century Cycle. Together they conceived How I Learned What I Learned, and Krieder is also a co-founder of the August Wilson Monologue Competition.
On Broadway, Todd worked with director Kenny Leon to develop a musical fable based on the lyrics of Tupac Shakur entitled Holler If Ya Hear Me. Additionally, Todd was the dramaturg on August Wilson's Radio Golf and Gem of the Ocean as well

as Associate Director for the Tony Awardwinning revival of Fences starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
For those unfamiliar with the plot of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, a white couple's proud liberal sensibilities are put to the test when their daughter brings her black fiancé home to meet them.
Blindsided by their daughter's whirlwind romance, Matt and Christina Drayton are faced with the realization that there could be a difference between supporting a mixed-race couple in your newspaper and having one in your own family.
They're surprised to find they aren't the only ones with concerns, and it's not long before a multi-family clash of racial and generational differences sweep across the Draytons' idyllic San Francisco terrace. Fresh, humorous and relevant, this is a reflection on two families, each confronted by their own internalized prejudices.
The Arts Center is excited to produce this witty and insightful work, directed by marcus d. harvey, onstage February 1–19.
For tickets, visit artshhi.com or call the box office at (843) 842-ARTS(2787). Tickets will be on sale to the public January 3 (with subscriber seating on December 27).
If you saw Emmet Cahill in 2019 at the Arts Center, you may already be standing in line at the box office for tickets for his return performances March 2 and 3. Our audiences were astounded by his incredible voice, charismatic stage presence and world-class song selection – regaling us with beloved standards, Irish favorites and Broadway hits.
For those who didn't have enough Luck o' the Irish to snag tickets for his last Arts Center appearance, a little about this international sensation: Emmet hails from Mullingar, Ireland. At age 5, he began learning piano and his vocal training began at age 7. In high school, he received a prestigious music scholarship and at 18, began formal training at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he received a BA in Music Performance.
In 2010, Emmet was awarded the 'John McCormack Bursary' for most promising young tenor and named "Most Promising Young Singer" at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. One year later, Emmet began touring with the international Irish music group, Celtic Thunder. As the group's lead singer, he has toured throughout the United States, Canada and Australia and appeared on PBS numerous times.
Indeed, Emmet's star has been shining brightly, recently making his sold-out debut at New York's Carnegie Hall. His Irish album debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts with Sony Music USA. And recent appearances include: The Today Show, New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral, the United States Pentagon, Atlanta Symphony Hall, and more.
Emmet has a soaringly beautiful Christmas album out, "The Spirit of Christmas," that is the perfect music to fill your home during the holiday season. At the writing of this, he is on his "Christmas in Ireland" tour around the United States.
Needless to say, we are thrilled to welcome him back to the Arts Center stage Thursday March 2 (7:30pm) and Friday, March 3 (4:00 & 7:30pm). Tickets go on sale January 5 and may be obtained by visiting our website at artshhi.com or by calling the box office at (843) 842-ARTS(2787).

The Arts Center's year-round educational offerings were punctuated with an annual Youth ArtsFest, held early each March. But as programs have expanded, so too has our celebration of young people in the arts! Now, what once was a day, is a month-long arts-travaganza!
In celebration of National Youth Arts Month (YAM!), the Arts Center has followed suit with a host of field trips, workshops, in-school arts specials, an art exhibit (details to be announced soon) and a dance master class.

The winds blow, the fireflies glow, and a trickster spider knows just how to get what he wants. But will Anansi stick to his embellished stories of adventure and danger or will he discover that the truth may serve him better? Help the African Savannah come to life in this interactive tale adapted for the stage by LCT's Jeremy Kissing. Based on the traditional Anansi Tales.*
Below are a few highlights to note on your calendar. Schools – and homeschoolers – may reach out to the Arts Center to sign up for the field trips by contacting Senior Director of Education Alana Adams at aadams@artshhi.com or by visiting our website at artshhi.com/fieldtrips *This project is supported by funding provided by the South Carolina Arts Commission from a partnership with the SC Department of Education from American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Funds.
New on the Arts Center's list of offerings for spring is a wonderful, four-day retreat, to be held March 23 - 26. Attendees will have the opportunity to "Reflect, Renourish and Renew" at the Arts ReCenter Retreat. Combining numerous years of experience, instructors Becca Edwards (FemaleIQ), Debi West (WESTpectations Educational Consulting) and Peggy White (Lean Ensemble Theatre) will guide you through a series of interactive and compelling lectures, creative, multi-media workshops and thoughtprovoking breakout sessions.
"Expressing your inner voice using the visual arts has many benefits. Our art is an extension of ourselves, and when we use the arts as an expressive tool, it can be one of the most unique forms of healing," said instructor Debi West. "It has the potential to help convey ideas, feelings and thoughts that could otherwise be difficult to reveal."
Several enhancements to the weekend include the optional add-on events including a performance of Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami (3/24), Rise and Shine Yoga (3/25, morning) with Becca Edwards and "Painting from Within: Exploring Our Emotions" at the Arts Center with abstract artist Brucie Holler (3/25, evening and 3/26, morning).
Of her class, renowned artist Brucie Holler explained, "In order to find one's voice, being able to discern our varying emotions is an important step. Using watercolor and other media, you will explore sometimes subtle differences between emotions as we all have our unique relationship to each." No painting or drawing experience is necessary.
"After completing the retreat, you will have a deeper knowledge of yourself and the visual, writing and performing arts, as well as gain a sense of accomplishment with your final projects," said Alana Adams, Senior Director of Education.

The host team, University of South Carolina, will strive to take home the most coveted trophy in golf, a guitar signed by Darius Rucker. All eyes will be on Wake Forest University as they have their sights set on a "three-peat," after winning both the individual and team trophies in 2020 and 2022 (The 2021 DRI was cancelled due to COVID-19). The 2023 field will also include NCAA runner-up University of Oregon and two individuals from historically Black Colleges and Universities for the first time.
The tournament made history in 2022 after gaining national exposure on the Golf Channel, which was the first exclusively women's college golf tournament ever televised live, showing off Long Cove Club, the island, and the incredible talent of these collegiate golfers. The Arts Center even got an on-air shout-out last year! The Golf Channel is scheduled to return in 2023 with three days of live coverage.
As the event continues to gain popularity, one thing remains the same – the focus on the tournament experience for the
players and coaches. The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate provides each team an ocean-oriented private home, delicious meals at Long Cove Club, and most importantly, front row tickets to the most exclusive event in town – a private concert by Darius Rucker and his band held right here are the Arts Center.
Lindsay Finger, Director of Marketing for Long Cove Club, said "The event couldn't take place without support from our longtime sponsors including Kroger, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Sonesta Resort and over 40 local businesses. Each year, over 150 Long Cove Club members volunteer to make this event a success, and we couldn't be more delighted to host once again."
Darius Rucker, The University of South Carolina and Long Cove Club invite you to witness the next stars of women's golf alongside a worldwide TV audience! For visitor information, including parking and a list of participating teams, please visit LongCoveDRI.com.
