FINDING THE WONDER THIS SEASON!
It’s a magical time at the Arts Center as the lights surrounding the building sparkle, and we are busy as Santa’s elves getting ready for our glittering production of 42nd Street!
This excitement was tangibly in the air during the Town’s Official Holiday Kick-Off Festival held on November 16th on the Arts Center grounds where we ushered in the season with entertainment, an art market, crafts, and food … not to mention Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Rudolph! Many thanks to the Town of Hilton Head Island for their sponsorship of this event.
A meaningful seasonal tradition at the Arts Center is the “Tree of Life” in the Theater Lobby, which was started by our cherished Lee family. Each year, it is dedicated in memory of organ donors and in honor of recipients, represented by the angel ornaments on the tree. Read more about this very special tree on page 25.
In this season of gratitude, I want to underscore how much we so greatly appreciate the support of those who attend our productions, presentations, educational programs, and festivals; our treasured donors; our wonderful volunteers; and the Arts Center staff who work tirelessly to make it all come together.
As we usher in a New Year, we are delighted for what will be on our stage in the coming
months! From our winter production of The Cottage (Jan. 29 – Feb. 23) to Burnham Sings Bublé on February 17, and the Grammy Award-winning Ranky Tanky on March 28.
Also, February 8 is our free Voices of Gullah festival, featuring incredible Gullah song, poetry, storytelling, arts and crafts as well as Taste of Gullah. Plus, don’t miss attending our “Night of Broadway” Spring Benefit starring three stunning Broadway Stars. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, March 22 and find out more on page 42.
There’s so much more to come in 2025! We are overjoyed to create and share these enriching events with you, our family of supporters and our visitors.
It’s my wish for all of us to foster kindness, inclusion, and peace as we celebrate all that makes us unique. May we all find the childlike wonder in this -- and every -- season.
Warmly,
Jeffrey S. Reeves President/CEO

THIS THEATRICAL GEM DAZZLES
While this treasured production is not a show about Christmas or the holiday season proper, 42nd Street nevertheless brings all the sparkle that you could want this December to the Arts Center stage!
The origin of this uber fantasy about instant show business stardom may well be the shimmering, song-and-dance-saturated 1933 film 42nd Street, whose huge, innovatively cinematic production numbers were staged and choreographed by the legendary Busby Berkeley. In 1980, the film was turned into a Tony Award-winning (Best Musical and Best Choreography) backstage musical which, in turn, won the Tony Award for Best Revival in 2001. The Arts Center’s own production follows this winning formula of singing, dancing, and glitz!
42nd Street takes us to the height of the Great Depression, where an aspiring and naïve chorus girl named Peggy Sawyer (Maddie Robert) comes to the big city from Allentown, Pa., and lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadwaybound show with the renowned Julian Marsh (Matt Gibson). But just before opening night, the demeaning diva and star Dorothy Brock (Jean McCormick) breaks her ankle.
Peggy is challenged to step in, step up, quickly learn 25 pages of dialogue, six songs, and 10 dance numbers, all to save the show!
Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble's book provides both plot and a panorama of familiar characters, reincarnating the glory days of the Busby Berkeley-era of Hollywood musicals. Meanwhile, the timeless score by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin were culled from not only the 42nd Street film, but from other box-office bonanzas such as Gold Diggers of 1933, Dames and Go Into Your Dance, among others.
This high-energy, sequin-studded production is directed by David Grindrod, who coincidentally, saw 42nd Street for the first time at the Arts Center when he was only 12 years old. “I saw the show with my grandparents, and sat there mesmerized, thinking, wow … I want to do this,” David recalls.
David has performed at the Arts Center in Newsies, Elf, and A Christmas Story He then directed and choreographed our production last season of Holiday Inn. Much like Peggy Sawyer, his 12-year old dreams did indeed come true!

We’ve come to truly love this fine Irish lad at the Arts Center. Emmet Cahill has blessed our stage on two separate occasions, and this third time will be infused with the magic of Christmas.
On December 10, Lowcountry audiences can experience Emmet’s stunning renditions of all your favorite Christmas carols including O’ Holy Night, Adeste Fideles, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and Silent Night sung in German, Irish, and English.
Emmet’s "Christmas in Ireland" will transport us on a journey to Ireland through song, recalling Christmas stories from the Emerald Isle as well as performing a few Irish classics including Danny Boy, An Irish Lullaby, and When Irish Eyes are Smiling.
“Music has the amazing ability to connect us to the most cherished memories. It can transcend time and immediately bring us to a place in our past, a special moment from long ago or even make us feel in the presence of a departed loved one,” explained Emmet.
Emmet Cahill, star of PBS phenomenon Celtic Thunder, has been widely hailed as “Ireland’s Most Exciting Young Tenor.” Hailing from Mullingar, Ireland, he has quickly built a reputation for being the golden voice of this generation. His performances of the Irish classics in particular have likened him to the great Irish Tenor John McCormack.
His Irish album, "Emmet Cahill's Ireland," debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts with Sony Music. Recent appearances include The Today Show, New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the US Pentagon, Atlanta Symphony Hall, and even sold-out performances at Carnegie Hall.
Celebrate the holiday season in unforgettable fashion with Emmet Cahill at the Arts Center, featuring many well-loved holiday favorites from both sides of the Atlantic.
Tickets are going fast for the two shows (4:00pm and 7:30pm) on December 10. To check availability, visit tickets. artshhi.com or call (843) 842-2787.
“A DELICIOUSLY FUNNY ROMANTIC COMEDY!”
What happens at the cottage stays at the cottage. That is, until one woman decides to expose her latest affair to both her husband and her lover’s wife. Thus begins a hilarious tale of sex, betrayal, and desire as fate and faith, identity and infidelity, and love and marriage are all called into question.
Written by Sandy Rustin ( Clue ), The Cottage won 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards for its 2023 Broadway run. Rustin’s sensational, feminist twist on a classic British period drama features melodramatic reveals and outrageous one-liners, and of course, plot twists that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
On Broadway, the production starred Laura Bell Bundy who will be joining us, along with two other Hairspray stars and Broadway buddies, Kerry Butler and Marissa Winokur, for the Arts Center’s Spring Benefit, “Night of Broadway,” on Saturday, March 22! (see p. 42 for more info).
But back to The Cottage ! At the helm of unraveling this web of secrets, Director Blake White says, “There is something liberating about watching people behave
in wonderfully deplorable ways, telling lie upon ridiculous lie, simply to attain shortterm gratification. It's deliciously feral.”
Pulling off the perfect laugh requires a talented ensemble cast who can play off one another and bring their characters to life while fulfilling the playwright’s vision. White says his job is to incorporate the best ideas of the creative team, cast, and crew and, “take the audience on a delightfully fun journey.”
A professional actor and director, White founded Lean Ensemble Theater in 2015 and serves as its Artistic and Executive Director. He has directed and acted locally, regionally, and across the country.
“Lean Ensemble Theater and the Arts Center have been supportive community partners for years, so we’re excited to finally have Blake direct for us,” stated Arts Center’s President/CEO Jeffrey Reeves.
The Cottage runs January 29-February 23, 2025. Tickets go on sale to the public on December 18, and may be purchased by visiting www.artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS (2787).
Featuring a Taste of Gullah
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 08
12:00 – 3:00pm
Gullah culture takes the continuing the 29-year partnership between the Arts Center and the Lowcountry Gullah community.
This year, the Arts Center, in partnership with NIBCAA, is offering a twist on our Gullah-oriented festival, now called the Voices of Gullah, while still prominently featuring the Taste of Gullah. In addition to enjoying the delicious, traditional Gullah cuisine, we are also including the melodies and sounds that make the Gullah culture so incredibly rich and vibrant: the storytelling, the music, the spoken word, the voices .
The festival is still free and fun for the whole family. The February event will be held inside the cozy theater, with performances onstage. Attendees can come and go from the “house,” while also enjoying the rest of the festival ambiance, in and around the theater.
The spotlighted entertainment includes Lowcountry treasure, Voices of El Shaddai, singing their signature gospel and blues music. This award-winning group came together in the early 1990s
when a handful of all-star singers from local churches decided they had more joy to share than a handful of songs in a Sunday service. Other groups and artists will be performing that day as well.
For more than two decades, the annual De Aarts Ob We People exhibit has graced the Walter Greer Gallery during Gullah Celebration Month. The exhibit brings together one of the largest displays of original Gullah art by emerging and acclaimed artists representing the life of Gullah people in the Lowcountry. The Art League of Hilton Head will also be selling Gullah-inspired jewelry, crafts, and interesting handmade creations.
Sweetgrass basketry is a marvelous expression of Lowcountry Gullah culture. Two prominent keepers of this legacy are Michael Smalls and Dino Badger, who will be demonstrating sweetgrass basket weaving during the festival. Dino’s love of history drew him to learn the technique from Michael, a proud seventhgeneration basket-sewer who learned the art from his great-grandmother.
Food, crafts, entertainment, art, and more are the perfect way to celebrate all things Gullah! We look forward to welcoming all of you on Saturday, February 8 from 12 noon to 3pm for this exciting, free festival!
The Most Meaningful Gift of All TREE OF LIFE
Trees have been used as symbols in many cultures and traditions to represent life and growth. Trees grow from a seed into a towering giant, providing food, shelter, and oxygen. This process mirrors the human journey of growth, change, and the spiritual interconnectedness of everything.
This year, the Tree of Life in our Arts Center theater lobby is especially meaningful … the angel ornaments especially poignant.
It is designated a “Tree of Life” as a reminder of the selfless gifts that organ donors and their families have given and of the miracles that, without them, would not have been possible.
Those miracles are what the gifts of organ donors represent to transplant recipients. The tree in our lobby is adorned with angel ornaments, each symbolizing individuals who so generously gave their ultimate gift.
The tradition of the Arts Center’s Tree of Life was arranged by Peggy Lee, mother of our own Board Trustee Emeritus Bob Lee. A lifetime supporter of the arts, Peggy was a professional soprano who moved around the world with a successful corporate-based husband and their two sons. Peggy had an operation in the 1960's, the complications of which led her to slowly lose liver function. Peggy was fortunate to receive a transplant in December 1991.
Elaine, Bob, & Ian Lee
Decorating the Tree of Life, 2013
Following her recovery, Peggy helped to arrange the Arts Center's first “Tree of Life” in 1995 in honor of donors and to raise awareness. The Arts Center then encouraged other theaters across the state to follow suit and have a Tree of Life as well. Now they are located in dozens of South Carolina performing arts centers.
After a wonderfully long life, Peggy died in 2002, but the Tree of Life, and its meaning, lives on. In fact, it means more to the Lee family – and to the Arts Center – than ever. Ian Lee – Peggy’s grandson, Bob and Elaine’s son, and our resident percussionist in the orchestra – passed away in June of 2024.
Ian long ago made the decision to be an organ donor. Because of that unselfish pledge, Ian's kidneys provided the gift of life to two young South Carolina men. Bob said, “Through our sadness, it has been healing for us to know that two lives were saved because of Ian’s gift. Our hope is that more people will make this life-giving decision.”
How can you help? Become a donor and have an organ donation card with you. In South Carolina, it’s signified by a heart on your driver’s license. For more information, call Sharing Hope SC at (800) 462-0755 or visit www. sharinghopesc.org for more details.

One of the Broadway Tenors is Back!
You may have seen (and heard) him on the Arts Center stage in performances as part of the trio of famed Broadway Tenors. Now, he brings a solo concert to our stage that spotlights the incredible songbook of Michael Bublé.
Broadway’s David Burnham celebrates the music of the three-time Grammy Awardwinning singer and entertainer featuring Bublé’s greatest hits including “Cry Me A River,” “I Haven’t Met You Yet,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” “Home,” “Sway,” and so many more!
acclaim when he was chosen to replace Donny Osmond in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. On film, David is the voice of the Prince in the Warner Bros. animated feature The King & I and is featured in Disney’s Home on The Range.
"BURNHAM GIVES A JOYOUSLY ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE."
– the san francisco chronicle
If you haven’t had the good fortune to see David perform live, it’s only because you haven’t met him yet! His Broadway credentials are many. He’s the recipient of the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Best Actor, a Drama-Logue Award, and a Back Stage Garland Award. He’s performed as Fiyero in the Broadway production of Wicked and Fabrizio in the Tony award-winning musical The Light in the Piazza. David first gained critical
As with so many great performers, David Burnham has a wonderfully infectious personality that radiates from the stage, with his amiable and welcoming banter between songs appreciated by everyone who sees him perform.
See his latest show, "Burnham Sings Bublé" at the Arts Center on February 17 at 4:00pm or 7:30pm. These two shows will sell out in record-pace, so sway on over to tickets.artshhi.com or call (843) 842-2787 to get tickets today!

Showcasing Lowcountry rhythms, blues, and jazz, the Grammy-awardwinning band Ranky Tanky comes to the Arts Center stage March 28 at 7:30pm for an exhilarating night of upbeat music you won’t want to miss.
This Charleston-based quintet performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Ranky Tanky, which loosely translates to “get funky,” mixes elements of African music with American gospel and R&B, and the result is pure magic! This band can take tunes from yesterday and make them sound as lively and relevant as 21st-century electronic beats.
Formed in 2016, the South Carolina quintet of Clay Ross, Kevin Hamilton, Quentin Baxter, Charlton Singleton,
“SOULFUL HONEY TO THE EARS” – NPR
and Quiana Parler debuted their eponymous album just a year later and garnered a career-catapulting interview with NPR’s Terry Gross, as well as an appearance on “The Today Show.”
Their album Good Time, which features a mixture of traditional Gullah tunes as well as originals, won a Grammy award in 2020, the first time Gullah music captured this top honor. And if this group’s immense popularity is any indication, it won’t be the last.
Clay Ross, one of Ranky Tanky’s founders, told PBS NewsHour, “You know, this music has called to me. It's inspired me. And it's been a part of my life for over two decades. There's no one out there doing a contemporary expression of our South Carolina roots music, and specifically Gullah music.”
In addition to winning the Grammy, the band’s work has made it to No. 1 in jazz on Billboard, iTunes, and Amazon charts.
Tickets for this highly anticipated musical event, March 28 at 7:30pm, go on sale January 8. Visit www.artshhi.com or call the box office at (843) 842-ARTS (2787).

Monty Jett
Monty Jett, longtime radio personality and generous community member, passed away on the morning of October 17, 2024 at age 76.
Known as the “Voice of the Lowcountry” for his recognizably rich voice, Monty was beloved for his kindness, friendly on-air banter, and prolific charity work. He brought immeasurable joy and warmth to the community, which extended far beyond the airwaves.
Monty passed away at 6 a.m. that October morning after suffering a heart attack. “He left as if starting his final morning show in the sky — right on time,” his daughter wrote on social media.
With more than three decades on the airwaves of Beaufort County, Jett hosted “Mornings with Monty Jett” on the 1130 AM station, weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m.
“Well-known for his work with local non-profits including the Arts Center and a friend to many of us, Monty left an indelible mark on our community,” said Arts Center President/CEO Jeffrey Reeves. “He will be missed.”
